Robert Herron May Be Turning Corner

Bucs rookie WR Robert Herron has made few catches like this in training camp. But after a good catch in the first preseason game, and several catches today, maybe Herron has cured himself of the dropsies? Photo courtesy of Buccaneers.com.

This spring, Bucs rookie wideout Robert Herron sure looked like a keeper. The guy was lethal in crossing patterns, catching balls and throwing it into Roadrunner overdrive, leaving defensive backs to eat his cinders.

Yes, that was underwear football. When the big boys decided to put on the pads in training camp, Herron couldn’t catch the measles. Balls bounced off his hands far more often than he could catch a pass.

It got so bad that Joe thought, even though Bucs coach Lovie Smith covets speed like Joe covets the warmth of Rachel Watson’s bosom, Herron might not make the team.

What good is Michael Clayton a wide receiver who can’t catch?

Herron may be turning the corner as the final days of training camp 2014 are here. Herron caught one pass (!) Friday night against the Jags and seems to have been found his form, catching several passes today.

Even Bucs general manager Jason Licht was impressed by Herron, as he told co-hosts Booger McFarland and Zig Fracassi of SiriusXM NFL Radio as they broadcast live from One Buc Palace today.

“Robert Herron had a really nice traffic catch,” Licht said of his Friday night performance.

Up until Friday night, Joe was thinking, at best, Herron was a bubble player. If he can continue to hang on to passes, Herron will do himself a big favor in climbing up the depth chart.

“That’s how he has been — he has shown flashes throughout,” Lovie said. “In the game, one great play, drop another. A lot of that is normal rookie play, if I say so. I try to concentrate on those plays where he has caught the ball. Some of the quirkiness we’ve been able to see throughout. I time, he’s gong to be a pretty good football player.”

Don’t think Herron is a ‘bubble” player…….we spent a 6th round pick on him and odds are good he will make the team.

Remember that 6th round guitar playing punter?

  4. PRBucFan Says:

Yea I was gonna say he dropped two in a row in the game, hope he really is coming around.

  5. Brandon Says:

The stupid network didn’t replay the catch, but didn’t he reach behind himself and grab it one-handed.

  6. Andrew 1 Says:

Might take time for him to adjust after catching passes from noodle arm at Wyoming. He’s not longer getting nice, soft passes thrown at him, there coming in hot and heavy now. I like this kid and really hope he sticks around.

  7. buc4lyfe Says:

OK he’s been dropping passes since he put on the uniform you know that because you reported every drop. Damn Joe he’s off the hook already? First practice without a drop

  8. Seattle Buc Says:

Watch the video of the Charles Sims 27 yard catch, On that play, after Sims caught the ball Herron threw a block on the linebacker that was covering him and knocked him flat on his arse. That was a nice block.

  9. Owlykat Says:

Murphy is a keeper and was our best receiver in the Jax Game. He should be our slot receiver, but Heron should be his backup. Owusu and Streeter should make the team with Patton as our returner.

Vincent Jackson struggled with drops last year and he is not on the bubble… I haven’t been to training camp practices though, how bad has his drops really been?
