Rookies Got Private Study Session

August 6th, 2014

CharlesSimsChatting with Bucs rookie wide receiver Robert Herron yesterday, Joe heard a pretty cool story.

Herron is roommates with fellow rookie Charles Sims. They’ve been together since they were drafted, and they’ve been studying — and struggling — together with the Tampa Bay playbook.

When they met Josh McCown, the Bucs’ starting quarterback gave the rookies his cell phone number and told them to call him if they needed anything. Of course, the rookies were a little intimidated and didn’t start burning up McCown’s phone with questions.

But during the OTA practice period at their hotel one evening, Herron and Sims decided to reach out to McCown for help. And he came over in person.

“It was an educational session for about an hour,” Herron said. “There was no joking around. He didn’t treat us like rookies, and he’s not like that.”

You get the gist.

McCown may not be able to produce on the field and ever become a good starting quarterback; Bucs fans are pulling and yearning for his success. But McCown surely is everything the Bucs could want in every other area. He’s a fantastic plus for a new regime.

Glad we signed McCown, and imagine the effect he’s having on Glennon. Our young players have a leader to learn from. When was the last time we had that at the QB position? 2010?

One more wooden stake straight into the heart of Freepology!

  3. biff barker Says:

Thought I’d put this out there. Maybe Sims can help Herron with some hand to eye coordination drills?

  4. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I just don’t see how that Greatest Quarterback (off the field) is going to play all 16 games for whatever reason.

  5. Captain Morgan Says:

McCown is a mobile, low mileage QB. He has just as good a chance to play all 16 as anyone else.

Thank you ‘good Josh’. While I an far from sold on the PMM (short for Pineapple McCown Mob) I do appreciate Lovie bringing you here even if it only ends up being for your efforts to pass on valuable tips and tricks learned from your many years of NFL experience. The Glazer’s however May feel differently as it’s their $5M, so feel free to live up to the PMM’s hype 🙂

  7. Alex2013 Says:

Maybe he will be a coach when his career is over…

  8. Dooley Says:

The only thing that would make this story more awesome, is if Coach McCown got Glennon to drive him to meet up with the rookies and partake in the collective dissection of the playbook.

This is what you love to see from your leader. Call me crazy, but I feel this team really believes in this guy and that goes a long way when you are talking about chemistry within a team. That belief/chemistry usually translate into wins. You better believe McCown is reading all of the naysayers and that has to motivate him so much. I can’t wait for this season to start.

  10. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Hey if my naysayer McCown comments somehow motivate the guy to play lights out Bradyball and helps the team win a SB this season then all my awesome posts here on JBF will have meant something 🙂 🙂

    Joe

One thing that is the same with all great leaders, they get more from their troops than anyone else can and it does matter what they are doing. It is the ultimate intangible that cannot be rated before hand.

  12. Jim Walker Says:

I would say you have to go back to Jeff Garcia for the last professional QB we had.

  13. Tnew Says:

It is a shame tho that freeman didn’t have a guy like this at any level….all the way to the head coach to help him. Circumstances

  14. Seattle Buc Says:

Watch yesterday’s video of his TD to Evans. Sure its not live fire, I get it. Was looking Left, checked his first read, wasn t there so he just flipped his hips and ripped it to the right sideline in like half a second, right on the money. I’m no football expert, just a Bucs fan, but I think we might have something with PM12.

  15. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

That’s the way to spread the Pineapple. McCown will assist others to join the Bucs Pineapple Club. The best is yet to come. I read this article and can’t help but to be real.

    Is it Friday yet???!

  16. Owlykat Says:

After Josh leads us to a SB and educates the Franchise QB we draft next year and decides to retire, Love would be smart to hire Josh as our QB Coach, and then replace Tedford when he takes a Head Coaching position. Remember Josh coached a High School team and is a born leader. He has learned more offensive playbooks than almost anyone and is very bright and knows how to analyze defenses and what plays will exploit their weaknesses. He should be great at calling audibles on the field this year. Can’t wait til Friday!

  17. Owlykat Says:

Josh needs to be our next QB Coach and be a replacement for Tedford when he accepts a HC position elsewhere. Josh has learned more playbooks than almost anyone, knows how to read defenses and what play will exploit them, has been HC of a high school, is very bright, and a born leader. He will be great at audibles this year, and will teach our first round QB next year. Don’t be surprised if he wins a SB for us before he retires, and replaces Love when he retires to continue our Dynasty.

Another positive sign coming out of Training Camp….I know we haven’t even seen the first snap of pre-season, but it’s hard not to think that (other than our OL, which I am not terribly concerned about “yet”) everything seems to be rocking along smoothly and in some instances, much better than expected.

  19. Seattle Buc Says:

Lol Owlykat, I thought I was fired up! That was pretty funny.

  20. Carls Toe Says:

They did call Glennon! Cannon was playing with Freeman’s snake!
