Interesting Nuggets On Depth Chart

August 5th, 2014

depth chart

The Bucs released the first depth chart of the 2014 preseason, even though kickoff is a few days away. Joe knows depth charts released before the preseason schedule starts have about as much relevance as Punxsutawney Phil, but they are still fun to pick apart.

Here are highlights:

*Mike Jenkins is listed as a starting cornerback with Alterraun Verner. Johnthan Banks shows as a backup. (Keep in mind Jenkins has a leg injury)

*Chris Owusu and Vincent Jackson are your starting receivers. Mike Evans and Louis Murphy are behind them.

*Bobby Rainey is your No. 2 running back, with Charles Sims at No. 3

*Eric Page is the top kick and punt returner

*Brandon Myers is your No. 1 tight end.

* Greg Schiano infected Da’Quan Bowers’ head so bad he is now a defensive tackle.

*  Jeff Demps is at the bottom of the five-deep running back depth chart.

* Luke Stocker is the No. 3 tight end, above rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

* Oneil Cousins and Jamon Meredith are atop of your depth chart for guards.

* Quinton Pointer is your No. 2 nickel corner behind starter Leonard Johnson.

Again, it’s largely meaningless, though Lovie Smith surely will be asked about it after practice this evening.

  1. Brandon Says:

    * Chris Owusu is listed as a starting wide receiver opposite of Vincent Jackson and first round pick Mike Jenkins backs up Owusu.

    —-Fix this, Joe.

  2. Jim Walker Says:

Good to see Tommy Streeter’s hard work being rewarded.

  3. buccslove Says:

Do you mean Mike Evans behind Chris Owusu

  4. DB55 Says:

    Preposterous.

  5. pablo Says:

Pablo thinks luke stocker will finally be what we thought he would be

  6. Dooley Says:

Is the 1st and 2nd year guys chilling at the back of the depth means they play more once the reserves hit the field?

  7. Picked Off Says:

Maybe I’m not remembering this correctly, but didn’t Michael Koenen get that giant contract because he did kickoffs as well as punting?

  8. blind melon Says:

If you look at the 1st team and 2nd team independently, it surprising that the second team actually may be pretty decent. JMHO. Good enough for Preseason game 1.

  9. The_Buc_Realist Says:

How did adrian slowborn crack the starting line up at LDE??? I heard that Dotson has been manhandling him.

  10. The Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

Richie Incognito is still available, isn’t he worth a shot at an O line spot. We could put him at guard or move someone over and let him play tackle. He’s a pro bowl caliber player that we could use.

  11. Mort Says:

I think they’re probably just making rookies earn any sort of starting recognition (Mike Evans, for example) but the fact that Banks ins’t listed as a starting corner is absurd.

  12. Skyline Crew Says:

Stocker and Demps will not make the final roster. Other than that it is just a play and see how they handle it type thing. Other reports have said that they are trying out different people at returner so expect a different returner each week if not each half.

  13. hamilton Says:

Joe, the bucs must think more of mike Jenkins than you, he has been hurt an still on first team.

  14. Bucs Fan #237 Says:

Ur picture is really old Joe. Keyshawn and Jaqueze Green?

  15. OAR Says:

This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.

  16. KCK7489 Says:

It’s obvious to me that Lovie isn’t going to show a rookie starting in the first depth chart released. As a coach you have to make them think that they have plenty of improvements to make.

  17. Bucs Says:

Iteams that the people that are listed as starters will have more playing time. That’s all.

  18. BFFL Says:

Finally a coach that understands that you never anoint a rookie as the starter. He has to earn it.

  19. Hawk Says:

This is how the first ‘depth chart’ is formulated, folks.
Un-paid assistant intern:(Holding a blank form he was given as ‘busy work’) Hey! Someone give me a RBs’ name.
    Unknown voice: Martin!
Un-paid assistant intern: Thanks. Now another name for the second team. Hey! Wait a minute. We have TWO teams?

  20. Owlykat Says:

Owusu looked super in practice last year but bombed on the field, and likely Lovie knows that and what better way to see what we can expect then to match him up with Jax’s top defense! Lovie may want to use Stocker as a blocker, which is OK if he stays healthy, which he likely won’t. By now Lovie should know that he should not have signed Cousins who even the Browns didn’t want because of his poor production, and he has been no better for us, yet he makes him a starting Guard!?! What angers me is Cousins will not protect Josh, which could result in his being hurt, which could ruin our season. I have no doubt Cousins won’t be the starter when the season starts, however, and thank goodness Josh is a great athlete and was the best QB against the blitz last year in the NFL, and hopefully he will survive this blunder.

  21. biff barker Says:

    Senority rules…. and that’s OK.

    Because it’s meaningless.

Hell, one year the Hooded One resisted the NFL’s demands for a preseason depth chart citing it was preposterous exercise.

He finally acquiesced and submitted a chart in alphabetical order.

  22. Bucnnole Says:

Cousins wouldn’t start on the Storm. He is pure garbage and in no way should he even be on this team.

  23. Harry Says:

Joe(s), your not funny. I opened up the depth chart pic you have here and saw Sapp and Simeon Rice on it and had to take a deep breath. lol

  24. Harry Says:

    @pablo Says:
“…Pablo thinks luke stocker will finally be what we thought he would be…”

Harry thinks Luke “IR” Stoker will be cut, so lets hope Stoker will be what “we thought he would be…”

  25. Bill Says:

This is going to be a club that is very active on the waiver wire.

  26. pick6 Says:

gamesmanship by the coaching staff….it sounds like every rookie and second-year player has been placed as far down the depth chart as the coaching staff can put them without their credibility called into serious question. i think we will see guys like evans, tim wright, and banks move up the depth chart with ease in the coming weeks

  27. ToesOnTheLine Says:

I think Hawk is spot on, I wouldn’t try reading too many tea leaves with any of this first team stuff just yet. Some guys will obviously be starting come regular season, but to quote the phrase “it’s a fluid situation”

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

This chart means nothing at all. 2nd stringers will get the most playing time. THATS why you see some guys listed as #2 backups.

The starter will only play 1 series in the first pre season game.

  29. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    KCK7489 Says
“It’s obvious to me that Lovie isn’t going to show a rookie starting in the first depth chart released. As a coach you have to make them think that they have plenty of improvements to make.”

    It isn’t that. Not really.

He wants guys like Banks to get more playing time. The more game experience for the rookies, the better. Veterans need less preseason experience.
