The Return Of Anthony Gaitor

July 28th, 2014

Recently, the Bucs let go of defensive back D.J. Moore who seemed perfect for the new defense under Lovie Smith because he played for Lovie in Chicago. Alas, he was waved goodbye to hours before training camp.

So it seemed there was some clarity in the secondary for the Bucs. Apparently not. Per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, the Bucs are bringing back a familiar face: Anthony Gaitor.

This seems odd to Joe at many levels. First, Gaitor was unemployed. What can you say about a football player who was playing Madden rather than practicing when training camps are open and underway?

Second, Gaitor missed most of spring workouts because he was dropped by the Bucs. So learning Lovie’s defense in a handful of weeks might be a helluva challenge for the 2011 seventh-round pick.

Why not…..easy go, easy come….dime a dozen…..camp meat, at least knows how to get to 1 Buc….

  2. Hawk Says:

Lovie isn’t hurting Gaitors’ chances of making it on another team. He is camp meat. Moore has the potential to make the 53 on another team. Lovie must have felt he was just below the ‘bubble’ here, and wanted to give him a chance to earn a living elsewhere.
I do not, at all, read into this that Lovie believes Gaitor is a better player than Moore.
Of course, I’ve been wrong before. Back in ’63…

i don’t think they’re pinnin much hope on him to make the team. he was a hard working former buc who they can now offer a chance to put out some tape in some preseason games and find a job in another city that has more of an opening at CB. and if he does play his way into the final 53, good for lovie and good for us

  4. JT Says:

Must be something else going on with Moore, injury maybe? Why else would he be supplanted with someone so seemingly ill-prepared?

  5. Harry Says:

Camp fodder? Seems they could have at least brought in a player they would learn something about vs one they have plenty of (bad) game tape on.

Mark Barron is the senior ranking Buccaneer in the secondary while entering just his third season. Food for thought kids….

That said, the only surviving Buc staffer with anyone’s ear is Shelton Quarles. Interesting linkage IMO. Gaitor is worth a look because Melvin may be injury prone and I believe Gorrer is slotted for the Nickel.

My recollection is that he could not stay healthy.

    I like Anthony

  8. Oahubuc Says:

Good pickup. He’s a good, cheap, hard working, fairly smart guy with NFL game experience to have on the practice squad to challenge guys.

  9. Macabee Says:

If Gaitor’s camp meat, then add potatoes because he’s stepped in first day and just got a pick! lol

  10. Stanglassman Says:

    A. Gaitor is not eligible for the practice squad.

I think he is a good player that people have counted out before and he always managed to make the team. That said I think this is a much better team and he will be less likely than before to make it but I wish him luck.

  11. Dex Says:

Always liked gaitor, never heard of him before the Buc’s drafted him but after watching his highlight tape I was impressed, hard worker from a small school.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I always thought Anthony Gaitor was decent for deep depth. Deep, deep depth.

He’ll never be a full time starter, but in a pinch because of injury? He would do okay.

But I think he is camp meat as well.

I think folk judge a player based on college (big named) they’ve attended, tv airtime they received and draft round.

    Seen many 1st rounders FLOP!

Gaitor is a great humbled underrated CB…who will display that talent as he remains healthy.
