Guess Who Can’t Wait To Hit People?

July 26th, 2014

hardy nickersonJoe realizes plenty of Bucs fans reading here weren’t Tampa Bay faithful during the Tony Dungy era. So Joe knows references to that era don’t always stir passions — good and bad — in every member of Joe’s studio audience.

But Joe was a fan back then, a season-ticket holder, so what Joe heard in the Bucs’ locker room last night really got him jacked up.

Sunday is the day the Bucs will sport their pads for the first time in training camp and starting battling like men for jobs.

Hitting, what makes football what it is, begins.

Lavonte David (whose personality has now opened up now that the strict Schiano regime is gone) chatted enthusiastically about how every day linebackers coach Hardy Nickerson talks about how fired up he is for Sunday. “Day in and day out all day,” David said of Nickerson’s obsession.

Nickerson, of course, was one of the most violent Buccaneers in history. The man was out for blood, “every blade of grass,” was the mentality Derrick Brooks has described.

Check out this excellent video of David, via SportsTalkFlorida.com. David talks about various topics, including Nickerson, what happened during yesterday’s delayed practice and much more.

    I loves me some LVD.

His face says it all. The Schiano era is gone. Bring on the Lovie!

  2. Buccinfan Says:

He seems more comfortable and confident. Been following Lvd since he came in the league. This season might be his breakout one even though a season like last is tough to follow up for any linebacker

I’ll never forget back in the mid ’90’s…..the Bucs had just got blown out to finish another horrendous 5-11 season…in the locker room right after the game, Chip Carter from Channel 13 had a TV camera and microphone right in Hardy Nickerson’s face. Chip asked Hardy, “it’s been another rough season, what are you going to do first now that the offseason is here?” Hardy calmly replied, “I’ll be hittin the gym in the morning to get stronger and better for next year.” Welcome back Hardy!

    My favorite Buc EVER!!!!

Can’t see this video, but sure would like to. Only Youtube videos here and I know I’ve missed some good ones here on this site. I’m thankful for what I do get. Good job Joe, from one happy and info needy Buc fan.

What a solid, nice guy (OFF the field) LD is, but to think he hasn’t reached his peak yet is downright scary! He’s about to take this league by storm!

  7. Bobby Says:

He and GMC are the class of the NFL. Great to have them on our team. Like soft spoken assassins.

Yeah, the Lovie edict of no cussing isn’t strict at all is it?

  10. Dylan Says:

haha joe thinks he is the only one who was a bucs faithful during the tony dungy era… chill with the ego bruh. Was a starting Linebacker for river view during that era I’m assuming you were just drinking beer like always dreaming about the girls you post pics of hahah

  11. Joe Says:

@LightningBucs — How is cursing related to personality? C’mon.

  12. Joe Says:

@Dylan — Why the attitude. Joe was trying to be respectful to new Bucs fans, transplants, converts, teenagers, etc.

  13. T-DUB Says:

And that’s why i LOVE defense!! I know you need points to win, but hot dog..

    nothing like punishing some offense!

    Joe,

My comment was about your dig at Schiano being so strict, yet Lovie doesn’t let grown men cuss.

I heard that Gregory used to go so far as to personally monitor all of the player radio shows to make sure nobody was saying anything that he didn’t approve of. Such a great use of prep time!

    @lightningbuc,

He’s trying to build a team of professionals. I’m not sure what you do for a living but I wouldn’t go around cussing my my line of work. Some say cussing is a sign of low intelligence or vocabulary. I tend to agree.

I don’t mind the occasional F bomb. Heck, I used to throw them left and right years ago when I was in the military or around my close friends. I’ve since grown up and realized there is more to being a “grown” man than cussing.

To each his own I guess.

  18. lightningbuc Says:

    clafollett,

Couldn’t agree more! I have no problem with Lovie saying no cussing. My beef is with everybody, Joe included, getting their panties wadded up about how strict Schiano was, when I think every coach, especially the top ones, have a bit of strictness to them – just in different ways.

  19. clafollett Says:

    @lightningbuc

Thanks for clarifying! Yeah, I tend to think all HC’s have a little drill instructor in them. Look at Coughlin. He’s a prime example. But he’s got two rings so I guess its OK. 😉

I think Schiano was probably as strict as many others but his strictness tended to be about the unimportant things such as room temps and pasta consistency. I just don’t get that.

How about being strict about stupid penalties? He was brought in to clean up not just the lackadaisical attitudes but lapses in on field discipline. He may have succeeded in the former but I think he may have went backward on the later.

  20. Rob Says:

When I saw a headline asking who can’t wait to hit people, I figured Joe had expanded into reporting on Ray Rice.

Cuss words don’t bother me if used in conversation for stress emphasis. The words are used so widely that the shock factor is nil. Those words should be in the dictionary. And no, use of them has nothing to do with intellect.

  22. Westsidebucsfan Says:

I can’t wait until the BUCS can give this kid the fat contract he deserves and make him a longtime buc!!!

Yeah, about that. Have you ever looked in a dictionary? Cuss words are in there unless it’s a children’s dictionary.
