Training Camp Notes & Observations — Day 1

July 25th, 2014
Evans Day1

There was at least a little action during this lightning-abbreviated practice, and some rookies feeling a little heat.

It’s Joe’s daily practice notes and observations. Joe’s your eyes and ears at practice.

After stretching, players get into about five minutes of drills before practice is halted for nearly two hours for lightning. But the players got back on the field for about 30 minutes of work.

*In the little bit of pass-play installation work seen against defense (but no linemen) Chris Owusu and Vincent Jackson are the receivers with the first team. Rookie Mike Evans is waiting his turn. A handful of two-tight-end looks with Tim Wright and Brandon Myers.

*Evans jumped in with the second team, which means he was seeing balls come from the hand of the quarterback of the future, Mike Glennon. No. 8 throws behind Evans and short. They’re out of sync.

*Glennon then overthrows Eric Page deep.

*Glennon completes short to fullback Lonnie Pryoer

*Rookie WR Robert Herron snatches a Glennon ball over the middle and flashes his crazy wheels to the end zone.

*Josh McCown threading needle with quick outs to right sideline to Tim Wright.

*Fans cheer for a complete McCown long ball complete on the right flank.

*Bad hands by Solomon Patton during drill work.

*Eric Page is the No. 1 kick returner in the rotation.

*Gosh, Luke Stocker looks slow compared to his Bucs brethren at the position.

*Lavonte David seems to be playing lower to the ground at the snap of the ball.

*eye-RAH! Kaufman, of The Tampa Tribune, is spotted having a long private chat with Joel Glazer.

*AAANNNDDD there’s the second lightning alarm of practice. Players quickly scatter back to locker room. It sounded like the D-Day landings there was so much thunder over South Tampa.

*In the locker room, Carl Nicks’ jersey was hanging in his locker, a tribute to the departed Buccaneer.

Quick Lovie news conference nuggets:

Lovie admits he is biased, but GMC the best defensive inside player in the NFL. Untradeable.

Lovie: “Weight most overrated thing there is. Strength and speed is what counts.”

Lovie said he spent too much time on Redington Beach to watch what Michael Johnson did in Cincinnati. #sarcasm

Lovie is no Jim Bates. He said team as a whole needed to drop weight. He is pleased they have heeded his words.

Lovie said he didn’t need an alarm clock recently he was so excited about leading another team into training camp.

Lovie on shortened practice: just another lesson in dealing with adversity.

Hopefully the weather isn’t a bad omen for our season.

Also, every time I open an article (mobile) I’m getting a popup asking me to download a Kim Kardashian game lol. Of all the ads on an NFL website.

Good notes from the little time there was, thanks Joe(s).

Hopefully the afternoon rain starts coming in a bit earlier, or they adjust practice times. It is Florida in the summertime right?

  3. Pawel Says:

Hey Joe, you said Evans throws behind Glennon and short. Is Glennon our next tall WR?

  4. chickster Says:

seems glennon might make a better wr than qb…
    cause he sucks at qb.

  8. berserker Says:

    Glennon was horrible today

  9. Jimbo Says:

Thanks for the update Joe! Breakdowns of practices are probably my favorite articles. Hoping that McCown continues to progress!

-Lol, #88 IS slow compared to the other TEs. For him, it’s going to be a steep climb on a fine line.

  11. JBuc Says:

In all seriousness, Lovie should consider changing practice times. He should know that afternoon thunderstorms are the norm here which means a lot of wasted time. This is not ideal for a young team with a lot of new players.

  12. OB Says:

    Joe

I guess Lovie listened to all the troops that wanted an earlier practice time, I believe it is 1 PM for Saturday and Sunday.

Stayed the whole time through the lightning delay and the brief session. Couldn’t get too much out of it. Cheerleaders looked a little beefier this year. Guess they didn’t get the word about Lovie’s mandate to slim down.

  15. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

“A handful of two-tight-end looks with Tim Wright and Brandon Myers.”

This is music to my ears! Come on Tedford lets have the Patriot Tight End attack at the stadium by Dale Mabry. Love it!
