“His Opportunity To Be Kurt Warner”

July 23rd, 2014

shaun kingA former teammate of Tampa Bay starting quarterback Josh McCown, and a man quite popular among Bucs fans, says the Bucs’ new QB has all the skills — on and off the field — to become an epic success story.

With training camp just two days away, optimism is everywhere.

Of course, Joe’s referring to Shaun King, one of three quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game.

Speaking on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620 today, King, who played with McCown in Arizona, assured fans there’s nothing McCown can’t do.

However, in a tip of the cap to the Mike Glennon Mob, King said Glennon would be a fine fill-in and the real X-factor is the offensive coordinator.

“I think, Josh, the sky’s the limit. I mean this is his opportunity to be Kurt Warner,” King said. “This is his opportunity to, at the tail end of his career, to change, you know, his whole legacy. I know the talent is there. I know the intangibles are there. You know, now it’s just about going out and producing. I think Mike Glennon if forced to play in a situation, we’ll be ok. You know the one unknown about all this, and I keep saying it, is Jeff Tedford.

“I’m a Buc fan. I’m pulling for Jeff Tedford, but anybody that tells you they know exactly what the Bucs are going to do offensively, how they’re going to able to make adjustments in game to what teams do to them, they’re guessing. Because Tedford has never called plays at the NFL level.

“So this is something that we have to just wait and we’ll find out.”

Hey, Joe’s all in favor of McCown playing like Kurt Warner. It can’t hurt that McCown, who’s on his 11th NFL offensive coordinator, actually was a teammate of Warners and McCown has credited some of his recent success to Warner’s influence.

While hope is all over town, Joe can’t get too caught up in the dream of McCown turning in a miracle season at 35 years old behind a suspect offensive line in a brand new offense. But stranger things have happened.

You can enjoy King’s full interview below. King touches on how Lovie should accelerate the learning curve for a team trying to jell with a lot of free agents, and he talks about homosexuality, Father Dungy and how Josh Freeman’s career is over.

    Great… NOW McCown is doomed.

  2. Louis Friend Says:

Hard to find fault in what’s said about McCown. For a guy as old as he is to have this much hope being built up about him is unusual. I think some of it is fantasy based on 5 games of work. But we don’t need him to be Kurt Warner, we just need him to be a guy to move chains, not turn it over and excel in the two minute offense. That’s not elite but with a good defense it should be enough.

  3. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Yet there are fans who exclaim McCown has all the traits necessary to run Tedford’s offense as if they’ve had some personal invite to watch it or have had access to the playbook! All I am sure of is that the coaches will start the QB that they feel gives them the best chance to win. I believe that will end up being MG8 but also freely admit I am no football insider. I will trust the coach’s decision once preseason wraps up

  4. Couch Fan Says:

    ^^ Agreed

  5. BoJim Says:

Josh is going to get more reps in practice. He’ll start, then if he gets hurt or sucks then we’ll be fine with MG8.

  6. INDYbucsfan Says:

Well shit there goes our season!

  7. INDYbucsfan Says:

I feel like we should resign freeman now

  8. nate Says:

  9. Bawlmerbucfan Says:

As a newly turned 40-year old, seeing the picture of my man Dough Boy reaffirms my belief that growing old just sucks!

  10. PRBucFan Says:

If you honestly think Tedford’s offense won’t resemble the offenses he’s put out on the field continually in al his years of work than well, just watch 😉

  11. Kevin Says:

I have heard from a lot of people that Tedfrod was known for adding things to the playbook on a regular bases, and removing them. MY strong opinion has always been that an offense has to be creative to be successful.

What I would like to know is who were ALL of McCowns previous offensive coordinators?

Are they guys that are still in the League?

How many opportunities did he receive to start?

Tedford is new and may not end up to be this offensive Guru we are all hoping for….but if he is I think McCown or ANY QB he put’s out on the field will be successful.

  12. Solinor Says:

I wonder if Shaun King will get all sorts of hate from the media now that he’s said he doesn’t agree with homosexuality!

  13. Bendiesel Says:

I’m glad to hear someone like Shaun King not be intimidated by the likes of sander philipse at (bucsnation) smearing someone for expressing their opinion. I like Mr. King don’t agree with the homosexual lifestyle but I don’t hate on anybody, and don’t care what you do in you private life, I don’t agree with libtards, but I don’t hate on them either. Sander Philips needs to stick to sports, he is out gunned when he takes on father Dungy as far as character!
