The Countdown: Worst 20 Buccaneers Of The Past 10 Years — No. 15

July 15th, 2014

Endless Top-Whatever lists across the Internet got Joe thinking of the Buccaneers’ drought since their Super Bowl glory. Not a playoff victory since! And that motivated Joe to rank the 20 worst Buccaneers of the past 10 years.

Serious deliberations went into this at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Beers bottles were thrown. Game film came out. Arguments ensued. Chants of Sabby from wild interns were quieted by Joe. There was even an all-night screaming session where a top intern stood on a table and repeatedly yelled, “Put the damn Rockstar on the list!!” Joe had to give the poor kid a Hooters Calendar just to distract him.

Primary consideration was given to expectations for a player combined with on-field performance. Off-field behavior was a factor, and players were not punished for injuries.

No. 15 — center/guard Sean Mahan (2003-2006, 2008-2009)

Nicknamed “the human turnstile” and “Sean Mayhem” by Joe in 2009, Sean Mahan turned in some of the worst football in the history of the Buccaneers during that dreadful ’09 season.

Yes, it was that bad. Joe hadn’t seen a steady flow of sewage like that since Joe’s toilet overflowed one morning after a 1989 dinner of six burritos and as many Tecate beers from a food truck on the streets of Tijuana. (Ahh, to be a teenager again.)

Mahan came on for injured starting center Jeff Faine in Week 2 and literally couldn’t play football. The Bucs’ A-gap was like I-275 on a Sunday morning. Nothing got bottled up. Mahan was manhandled repeatedly. He started four games and the Bucs mercifully cut him, which ended his career at 29 years old. Even classy Davin Joseph threw him under the bus in frustration that year.

Literally, Mahan delivered some of the worst offensive line play Joe has ever seen, and it could not be ignored.

During this horrid stretch, Mahan found his way to the Buccaneers Radio Network and talked about keeping his weight and strength up. Perhaps it shed some light on why he sucked so bad.

To remedy the situation he eats all morning and night, Mahan said. Host Scott Ledger asked him about his food choices, and Mahan said he “doesn’t discriminate.”

For breakfast, it’s “four eggs, omelettes, waffles, pancakes …,” Mahan said. “[On the couch at night it's] “steak and ice cream. …Before practice it’s lots of fruit. … I eat all day long.”

No. 16 — Da’Quan Bowers
No. 17 — Daniel Te’o-Nesheim
No. 18 — Kyle Moore
No. 19 - Jeremy Truebood
No. 20 – Michael Clayton

The Countdown: Worst 20 Buccaneers Of The Past 10 Years will run once or twice daily until No. 1 is revealed on Thursday, July 24.

  1. Couch Fan Says:

Wow if Mahan is on this List Larsen dang well better be on it Lol

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

@Couch- If that’s the case, their position in the countdown should be reversed. At least Larsen blocked…and held…and jumped offsides….and…

    You get the point.

  3. Couch Fan Says:

Lol Yea Larsen was trying so hard he even hit after the whistle blew a majority of the time

  4. Jim Walker Says:

I was trying to forget this guy. Thanks.

  5. The Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

Don’t forget about Sammy the GOAT or GOAST in reality. He’s got to be outta the league by now.

  6. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Joes, you keep bringing up players I forgot about. (Mentally blocked) 20 might not be enough slots to fit in all the crap players that deserve public humiliation.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

Sean Mahan must of had a brief Buc career because he escapes my memory bank completely. Poor results are a distraction themselves.

  8. The_Buc_Realist Says:

For a bottom 5th round pic ( was actually “the” last pick of the 5th round discounting compensatory picks.) He actually did have a very decent season on 2005. That was the year the bucs made the playoffs and he played RG the whole season. So I am shocked at where he is compared to some of the other players are ranked due to there expectations.

Is this the 20 most players that irked joe???

  9. mpmalloy Says:

Sabby will be a top 5.
Spa-loving Derrick Ward needs to be on there as well.
    So will Freeman.
    .
Freeman had a couple of good years but the magnitude
of his epic meltdown may win him the #1 spot.
    We’ll see.

  10. Rob Says:

Joe, if you create a category for worst sports talk show host in the history of sports talk, it would have to be Scott Ledger. He was fine playing Cinderella CD’s, be he truly was the Sean Mahan / Sabby Piscatelli of the airwaves.

  11. d-money Says:

What a shock, Joe found a way to spew more pointless snarky negativity. But this time instead of in one article we get to view it over the two weeks prior to the beginning of training camp.

When everyone in Tampa Bay is finally filled with a little bit of excitement and energy about the Bucs, Joe decides to come out with a clever little list piling on players that aren’t even (for the most part, so far) on the team anymore.

Joe, you’ve said before that you write about what you want to write about, and things like this are examples of why more and more the things you want to write about are of no interest to me.

Judging from the comments I’m probably in the minority on this topic. I keep coming back here occasionally to see what’s new with the Bucs, mostly out of habit, and even when you actually post something halfway positive it most likely will end with a backhanded jab at one person or another.

I’d rather focus on the new team and look forward rather than wallow in the filth of the last few seasons. But hey, that’s just me.

So, how come you are commenting on (and reading) a “negative” article?

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Relax d-money, you are overreacting. It’s just a little bit of fun, stop taking everything so serious. It’s been a pretty bad 10 years, but it’s about to get a lot better. Nothing wrong with looking back and having a bit of a laugh.

  14. The_Buc_Realist Says:

D Money, think of this like getting all of the negative energy out of the fans. This is like burning the old jersey as a sacrifice. The fans need this to shed the bad voodoo from the Dominick reign of failure. I for am going to try to turn the page on the past regimes once training camp starts. No more pot shots about the last 5 years as I will try to focus on the whole new franchise of buccaneers.

  15. deminion Says:

Sean mayhem lol Ted Larsen is Garbo lol
