NFL players voted McCoy the best defensive tackle in the league

Little-Mermaid-loving, quarterback-hunting, charity-focused Gerald McCoy was delivered a huge honor by his NFL brethren this evening. McCoy was voted the 28th best player in the league by his fellow NFL Players.

The news broke tonight on NFL Network.

McCoy, of course, had his breakthrough season last year with 9 1/2 sacks, a monumental feat considering McCoy had little help on the Bucs’ defensive line. For example, look at the game film and you’ll see the Panthers triple-teaming No. 93 repeatedly.

The big question now is how much McCoy might improve in Lovie Smith’s defense under the tutelage of Rod Marinelli disciple Joe Cullen, the Buccaneers’ new defensive line coach. McCoy finally has big-time young talent sandwiching him on the D-line in Michael Johnson and Clinton McDonald.

McCoy is truly a great player. NFL Network announced McCoy is the highest ranking defensive tackle in their annual Top-100. But can he make those around him better? That’s the next step for No. 93, if he’s legitimately to be in the “next-Warren-Sapp” conversation.

I don’t agree but oh well

  2. Vincente Says:

Great news. Love it. But I would love to see him get the defense powered up and destroy anyone who goes to Tampa. I can’t wait to hear them say don’t nobody want to play against this buccaneer defense!

  3. Ep bucsfan Says:

How did i knw you were going to end the story with a “but”. such a downer lately joe. Lets celebrate him and get excited about what the immdediate future holds. Its almost here and this defense is definitely something to be pumped about.

C’mon. Joe is hardly a downer. But you know what? Things do trend that way when you’re team has one winning season in the last five. –Joe

  4. SAMCRO Says:

I don’t understand why they pigeon hole him in the 3-tech position. If my best defensive lineman is constantly being triple-covered while playing the 3-tech, then I would move him around. I don’t get these coaches sometimes. Put your best weapons in the right positions to succeed, instead they have him run into a wall on every down. They’re either incapable of making in-game adjustments or just plain stubbornness.

  5. Louis Friend Says:

You can’t make Filet Mignon from ground chuck, Joe. To make people around him better, they’ve got to be capable of actually being better.

I think McCoy has around a 20 sack season this year!

  9. Chris Says:

@Kyle don’t agree w what? Where he’s placed or that’s he’s considered best DT in league per popular vote?

I was hoping he’d break in the top 25, I believe he’s truly taking the spot as our leagues top DT/3 and dam proud he and David our gonna put back to the late 90’s! Go Bucs! #firethecannons

  10. Kyle Says:

I don’t agree with him being that low, if he’s the best at his position then he’s top 25, it’s an opinion and look there, I have one.

  11. getaclue Says:

he was right next to freaking patrick willis relax

  12. Back, from Davie Jones Locker Says:

    Shoulda been top 15.

  13. Nick H Says:

Maybe now he won’t get washed out for 85% of the snaps he plays with some edge help

How did I know someone like you would pick apart Joe’s comments? such a downer lately, Ep bucsfan.

What is wrong with the truth????

Joe is right in everything he said above. You are picking apart his one comment about the next step iin GMC’s growth???

Think about that. You are guilty of the very thing you troll Joe over.

  15. SeanyMac in SC Says:

I like the read. This picture of Revis at the Pro Bowl sort of ticks me off as I feel Revis was “gifted” this position. LVD was much more deserving! I feel better now.

  16. Theodore Says:

Hi Joe – Instead of using a “but” to end stories, here are some synonyms you can use:

although, however, nevertheless, on the other hand, still, though, yet

Glad I can be of help.
