The Rotten 2013 Season

June 20th, 2014
Yes, when the highlight of your season is when you changed uniforms, you had a bad season.

Yes, when the highlight of your season is changed uniforms, you had a bad season.

There was this thing in Tampa the other night called “Sneaker Soiree” that Joe isn’t quite sure what it is all about. On face value, it seems its only purpose is for folks involved in local sports to backslap each other over a scotch on the rocks.

What Joe does like about the event is that his good friends at WDAE-AM 620 broadcast this black tie/sneakers-required affair, which always includes a live interview with some Bucs big shot.

Then, there are crafted categories up for grabs with the winners getting some sort of plaque while the audience orders another scotch on the rocks. Each local team gets an award for best moment of the year.

Apparently, whoever is behind the voting (?) had to think long and hard what was the best moment of 2013 for the Bucs. For the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, that moment demonstrated how miserable of a season the Bucs had.

Yeah. New uniforms, which are not universally welcomed, was the “moment” of the year. Let the record show those new uniforms debuted long after former Bucs commander Greg Schiano cleaned out his office.

But when a team is wracked by the MRSA, has a franchise quarterback melted down worse than an ice cream cone on a Florida summer afternoon, and an offense so impotent Connie Chung would hide her face in shame, it goes to show why Team Glazer cleaned house only hours after the 2013 season came to a close.

The day JFro was jettisoned is numero uno for me!

  2. Snook Says:

New uniforms are a part of the 2014 season.

The number 1 moment of 2013 season was firing of Schiano.

  3. Mike Says:

I’m with lightning on this one. I never cared for Freeman….. Hated the pick, the play, and all things Freeman! Yes even after the one good year

  4. Mumbles Says:

I’m with Snook on this one! Schiano bought destroyed this team and brought disrespect on our Lombardi Trophy!!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Best moment for me was appx….7:35pm EST on 12/29….the time the whistle blew on our last game!!!

  6. SAMCRO Says:

The best moment of the year last year was tied with our first half blowout of Seattle, and our first win. Take the high road. Last year is over.

  7. Mumbles Says:

My post regarding Schiano was over the top. It implies intent and I don’t think he’s a bad man, I’m referring to all the articles that Joe has written about how people are excited to be here now. How we are ridiculed in the national media. I’m not looking back again, it’s a brand new day.

My apologies for my first post!

  8. The_Buc_Realist Says:

as bad as 2013 was. 2011 was way worst!

  9. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

NO. 1 moment – Whatever Schiano did to make the Glazers call LOVIE!

    I would guess after the 8th game…

  10. Espo Says:

Best moment as Clayborn knocking Brees into another time zone. It was a legal hit, by the way.

  11. Biff Barker Says:

The 2013 Buccaneer season is dead to me.

    Eyes forward.

  12. Orca Says:

I don’t get the Connie Chung reference.

  13. Couch Fan Says:

Best moment for me was watching Freewee stink it up for another team. Now on to 2014!

  14. kh Says:

Disagree, Schiano was the best thing to happen to the Bucs last year, he weeded out what otherwise could have been a disaster of epic proportions in making Josh Freeman a franchise QB.

  15. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    ^^^

Ditto as Couch. I had no ill will towards Freeman until he went out of his way to tank the season team, his coaches, and his fellow teammates with the interview making himself appear like a hapless victim of a tyrannical coach out to destroy Josh’s career. Josh earned his bad karma, still waiting for the NFLPA findings to become public (but I have a feeling insiders know the truth and it’s part of why Josh has been bounced off 3 NFL teams in under 8 months)

  16. WalkdaPlank Says:

But those uniforms are monstrosities compared with the pewter and red. 🙁

No.1 moment is the either the dumping of Free or Mr. Small Man Syndrome and his puppet.

  17. Jim Walker Says:

My number one moment was when I decided not to take a baseball bat to my Bucs memorabilia.

  18. Louis Friend Says:

Best moment, really aside from Schiano being terminated, was the Atlanta game. Only time all year the Bucs really controlled a game from start to finish. Felt good beating down the Falcons. A brief respite from the season of agony.

  19. The_Buc_Realist Says:

The Firing of the Bucs worst GM in Bucs history! Just knowing that the pop-star will not be able to make mistake after mistake, that is the biggest moment!!!!

  20. Joe Says:

My number one moment was when I decided not to take a baseball bat to my Bucs memorabilia.

    Whoa!!!

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Lavonte David had such a good year. Interceptions, fumbles, tackles, you name it. He was a one man wrecking crew and he was the highlight of the 2013 season. GMC and a few of his sacks were great too, but LD takes the cake.

  22. MadMax Says:

And cue the frustration of a fan (and fans) who have witnessed the demise of certain gm’s/coaches/players while the gluttony of proof has been there through its entirety…..just failed to see by those in power because of their blinders.

My highlight was being right in almost every aspect of opinions I made here. I’ll admit when Im wrong, and my optimism gets ahead of me at times when calling for us to win 8 or more games and I was wrong the last 3 years. But when I see bs going on with players and coaches and gm’s, I’ll say it.

One thing I want to point out though is look at the close games from last year and the way we were quickly on top of seattle! Play calling lost some of those games. We also need to mind the penalty rules….those cost a few too!

  23. Atlbuc40 Says:

My best moment last year was when .. My wife said… well look at the bright side.. your Buccaneers DTV remote still works and you still have enough room on the best buy credit card to get another tv. Yes I AM an idiot.

  24. Bucfever40 Says:

I have 2, first one was Lavonte David’s textbook tackle on a Miami RB for a non contested safety! The other was out other LB Mason Foster with a great interception followed by one of the best run backs for an amazing effort, scoring a TD against the Saints.

  25. DallasBuc Says:

I’m with Espo…that legal (flagged) smashing of Brees by Clayborn wins it for me! I’m a fan of Clayborn and hope he can earn his stripes on this defense and get resigned.

  26. nate_tweetz Says:

Man, those uniforms are ugly! I can’t get used to them. I saw them in person at the store thinking ‘maybe they’ll look better in person’. WRONG. If that’s the best thing that happened to the Bucs this year that’s really bad.

  27. Buccfan37 Says:

The best thing about the 2013 season is that it is over. Time is flying by, and now the Bucs are on the doorstep of their 2014 upgraded expectations.

  28. Kevin Says:

I’m with couch fan….best moment was watching Josh Freeman put on one of the worst performances I have ever seen. Although he never should have been starting that game in the first place it was fun to watch him do it wearing purple and not pewter. By the way I am 100% on board with the new uniforms. They kick ass!!!

  29. Jon Says:

Best moment. Hearing that the_buc_realist had to leave his parents basement and find an actual job. Would love to know what you try to do for a living and why you are so negative. I can already guess you’ll start bashing Jason (GM) because he was fired by two previous club or bash lovie for one firing. Please move on.

  30. Chef Paul Says:

I can think of a few.

First half of the Seahawks game.
Those up tempo drives against the 9ers.
The pick at the end of the Lions game against Megatron himself.
Two sacks in a row against the Dolphins(?)

Those were short bursts, but the best little moments for me.

And a personal one: Watching the Pats game in Foxboro for my first ever NFL game.

Uniforms (for me) would be somewhere between the MRSA and the 0-8 start

  31. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

That uniform, other than the helmet, is God awful.

  32. scubog Says:

Getting a Ravens fan tossed in pre-season. Hysterical watching him get escorted to the exit. Pretty much downhill after that other than a few moments already noted herein.

I don’t get the Connie Chung reference.

    ———————————–

Connie Chung’s story of wanting to get pregnant by fellow media (?) member husband Maury Povich were fairly well-known in the late 80’s early 90’s. As it turned out, Povich was impotent and that’s when the story became news.

  34. Brandon Says:

My best moment was at the Carolina Thursday game when I continually started up a chant of “Fire Schiano!” and by halftime most people around would join in.

  35. BoJim Says:

    When The Cannon stepped in.

  36. Biff Barker Says:

The new uni’s signal a positive change to me just like when we left the creamsicles for pewter.
I really like the new look but the numbers are freeking terrible.

  37. Harry Says:

I am also going with Couch. Watching Free continue to crash and burn was redemption. Imagine if he caught fire. THAT would definitely had been the WORST moment.

  38. Destinjohnny Says:

New Uni’s are growing on me

  39. jodi sportcoat Says:

Uniforms are great. The league will copy.Pewter pants were hideous and are so far from pewter it’s funny. What is so hideous about the same colors with reflective chrome outlines?I think Nike knows what their doing.Go out and get your jersey today and quit being a hater.I have my David home jersey and it’s no contest how much better it is than just…red
