“Every Great Chance In The World For Mike Glennon To Be The Starter On Opening Day”

June 16th, 2014

GlennonPennCue the Mike Glennon Mob!

Champagne for everyone. Break out the “19 & 9″ bumper stickers.

Tampa Tribune Bucs beat writer Roy Cummings, speaking last week on the Press Box show on Bright House Sports Network, emphatically declared that No. 8 could be No. 1 by opening day.

“All you got to know is take a look at Josh McCown’s track record to know that, yeah, there’s every great chance in the world for Mike Glennon to be the starter on opening day, and certainly five, six weeks into the season,” Cummings said. “And not just because Mike Glennon has more upside, not because he’s got more upside, which clearly he does, a big part of it is the fact that Lovie Smith and Jason Licht believe this team can win now. They are not planning to go through any kind of a rebuilding process here. They want to win right now. They expect to win right now. If Josh McCown isn’t getting that job done, Mike Glennon’s going to get the ball folks.”

Joe’s already is on record saying Glennon has no shot to start on opening day, barring an injury to McCown.

This is McCown’s team. Not only is he the named starter, but he’s the leader of the offense and has commanded the respect of the coaching staff in a huge way. Hell, McCown is even shaping the playbook.

However, Joe agrees with Cummings that Lovie Smith will not tolerate much if any learning curve at quarterback. If McCown is struggling and the team is losing, then that Week 7 bye could prove to be a significant time in Bucs history. (You can watch Cummings’ full take below.)

  1. Buccfan37 Says:

Just like Freeman started last year and melted down giving way to MG, history could repeat itself. I’ll be happy with McCown starting things off and want him to light it up. Glennon is the teams capable backup if needed. While I am a Glennon fan, I can agree with some of the stated positions pointing out his weaknesses.

  2. Mitch Says:

Bucfan37 You’re way off base believing McCown situation is anything like Freeman’s was. Apples to Oranges.

  3. stevek Says:

Thankful to have the guy for today (McCown) as well as the QB of the future (Glennon).

Lord knows the starting QB of the Bucs WILL BE ABLE TO AUDIBILE. We haven’t had a QB able to do so since before #5 started.

  4. Buc Neckid Says:

If this Offensive Line does not do a good job
McCown May be on IR after Week 1
    Besides,
All Bucs Fans should hope that Glennon would be ready to step in/up from the very first day of the season

  5. 1bucfan88 Says:

I’m less concerned with McCown struggling than I am having Oneil Cousins play a prominent role on the OL.

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

The one thing that Joe cannot comprehend is that if Glennon did beat out McCown it will be better for the Bucs in the long run. To have a third rounder at a low salary playing at a high level is a huge competitive advantage for an NFL team. If we would like this team to have sustain success we need a lot of the younger guys to play at a high level for years to come.

The sad part is, that there is a lot of local media that would rather be “right” and see Glennon fail and be out of the league next year than the team be ” right ” with Glennon and make the playoffs with Glennon.

  7. Netwalker Says:

McCown is not a head case. He will not melt down. This team will be relevant this year, and the only way Glennon starts is if McCown gets injured. Glennon has skills, and his day will come, but this is the McCown era of Bucs football. Glennon, and the Bucs will be much better for it.

  8. Dick2111 Says:

@Buc Neckid: “If this Offensive Line does not do a good job,
McCown may be on IR after Week 1″.

If Josh McCown ends up on IR after Week 1 because of poor OLine play, why would you think Mike Glennon wouldn’t be on IR after Week 2?

If the OLine isn’t at least adequate, it won’t matter who the QB is.

Besides, I’ll take Josh’s mobility and athleticism any day over Mike’s. Oh ya, and quicker decision-making.

  9. INDYbucsfan Says:

Pre season is going to be fun to watch. Our starting/backup QB against 2,3,4 stringers haha. Let’s hope for an undefeated preseason at the very least!

  10. joe$ucfan Says:

In order for Joe and the Dog to be right about MG he has to fail. I wonder what is more important to them. MG succeeds and the team wins or they are right. I don’t think I have read where Joe would be happy if MG did succeed and be the QB of the future. It seems Joes that you have alot invested in being right!

Thoroughly inaccurate. The reality is Glennon already has succeeded in being a good (and betting better) backup quarterback. He’s done well for his third-round draft status. Bucs fans should embrace what he’s done and his ability as a No. 2 QB. –Joe

  11. Bob Says:

Zero chance Glennon starts week 1.

  12. SteveK Says:

    Glennon has an effing cannon!

  13. biff barker Says:

McCown is a lock to play the entire season barring injury or a total collapse.
There is no competition other than to push each other.
I do agree that Glennon will be ready and capable if called upon.

  14. blind melon Says:

    no ones job is guaranteed.

  15. lightningbuc Says:

This is news? Most of us have known this – just some who still have a bad case of “butt hurt” from not drafting John are the only ones ignoring the obvious.

  16. brandonbucsfan.com Says:

Can’t see any way Josh is not the starter WK1…but if our OL is not any better than it looks on paper…afraid we may struggle against the DL’s of the Stinkin’ Panthers and Rams. f we lose those and go on the road for three WHOOPS…could be a switch after the BYE.. Hope not…Hope we win the two at home and at least one of the three on the road…then we can be relevant the rest of the season.

    Glennon goes 19-9 in pre-season

  21. Harry Says:

    Predictions:
    1) No way The Cannon starts the season (barring injury to McCown);

    2) CAR finishes last in the NFC South, Cam does not play all 16 games due to poor Oline blocking;

    3) ATL has a sub par year with 7 to 8 wins, finishes 3rd in NFC South;

    4) NO wins division

    5) Bucs finish with 8-9 wins, 2nd in division, strong finish at end of year (due to Evans, ASL and Sims beginning to figure it out) with great promise for ’15

    @PanthersSuck! Says:
    “…Glennon goes 19-9 in pre-season…”

    LOL, and wins Preseason MVP

  23. Max Says:

    LOL @ “19 & 9″ bumper stickers.

  24. Bucnjim Says:

Glennon would have to dominate the QB position from here on out to really have a chance at starting. Don’t really have a problem with either one of them starting. Like Glennon, but all I was looking for is giving the kid a chance with this team to see what he can do with a real coach and a few weapons. If McCown is a better QB then I’m all for starting him. Who knows what is going on behind closed doors. I don’t think anyone who likes Glennon would have a problem if McCown won and started the season. I’ll be rooting for both of them.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Roy Cummings is full of spit.

The only chance Mike Glennon has of being the “opening day starter” is thru injury.

If he had a chance of being starter that soon, he would be getting a lot more attention from the coaches, he would be getting first team reps out the nose (like last year).

MGM accept it…Mike Glennon is going to be the backup on opening day.

After that? Well now, that depends on how McCown does. He may suck. He may get injured during the season.

Personally, I hope either McCown is top notch (unlikely) or we get to see a lot of Glennon. Otherwise we won’t draft a QB next year (if Glennon blows) and we’re looking at two more years without a good QB.

Some of you may be okay shelling out money for that. I’m not.

  26. lightningbuc Says:

Joe’s already is on record saying Glennon has no shot to start on opening day, barring an injury to McCown.

    ____________________

Man, with Joe’s stellar track record of predicting anything QB related as it pertains to the Bucs, it’s hard to resist booking the first flight to Vegas to bet on such great insider information.

    JOE KNOWS QBs!

  27. robert8 Says:

all the people in the know know Mike, The Cannon, Glennon will be the opening day starter. I give it 75% chance.

McCown could very well be that guy, but I think he is here more to set the tone, install the offense, work with MG*, give MG some motivation and be the starter IF needed.

IF being the keyword. When Preseason is over and MG is 90% as ready as McCown, they’re gonna roll with Glennon because he is the future.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    The_Buc_Realist Says
“The one thing that Joe cannot comprehend is that if Glennon did beat out McCown it will be better for the Bucs in the long run.”

Joe isn’t an idiot. Seeing ANY QB excel is good for the Bucs and the fans. I really doubt Joe or any Bucs fan is “hoping” a QB fails here.

For calling yourself Realist, you sure are out of touch with reality.

There is NO chance Glennon “beats out” McCown for the starting role by game one. None.

Later, if McCown does poorly or gets injured, Glennon will get his chance. But not opening day.

And, another shot of reality. The worse thing that could happen is for Glennon to do average but acceptable. That would mean wasting time on a QB at the cost of not getting the real deal in here.

So, either he does very well when he gets his shot, or he should get high level competition for the job.

  29. robert8 Says:

funny thing is manzier would be Glennon backup even had they drafted him. LOL

going to vegas during training. what an a$$ clown

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    robert8 Says
“all the people in the know know Mike, The Cannon, Glennon will be the opening day starter. I give it 75% chance.”

    wow, lol.

Have you people even been paying attention this off season?

You are so interested in being right that you are ignoring the common sense. Take a good look at the off season each QB has had. Look at the differences in the coaching, the respect given to each.

Which QB is HELPING to mold the offense and being given approval priviledges on every play?

McCown is. If glennon had any hope of starting do you really think that would be the case? Wake up, people.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    And, btw…the nickname “The Cannon”?

Not really any good if he isn’t connecting on those cannons, which he isn’t.

  32. Bucfever40 Says:

The_Buc_Realist- I couldn’t agree more, I’ve been saying the same thing over and over, I am a Glennon supporter and hope we hit the jackpot with this kid, however I DO think McCown should start and see where he leads us, in the meantime we have Glennon waiting in the wings, ready to go if McCown falters and becomes injured. But no doubt, there are some here locally that would rather see the kid fail so they can say they were right the whole time, all at the teams expense…..SMH!

  33. Harry Says:

    @robert8
    75% chance, huh? LOL

NO chance. Don’t get me wrong, if MG8 is successful in outright winning the starting spot, that is great for Bucs fans (as long as it is not due to injury). But I will bet you that no way The Cannon starts the season, NONE.

  34. joe$ucfan Says:

Thank you for responding Joe. I can’t write MG off based on last year. Now, if he could not make plays with this offense and these new players then im with you. If he was a good QB with bad offense and players then he might be more than a backup QB with some actual weapons and a professional offense. He won’t run around and make plays but neither does Brady. In time you might be right but lets give him a chance. Did you think Foles would be this good or is it the system.

  35. clafollett Says:

    @Bonzai,

It depends on which “Cannon” you refer to. If you are referring the likeness of a revolutionary war “Cannon”, well then, I would expect him to not connect very often. Those old “Cannons” weren’t very accurate.

Now, if you are referring to a 140mm Howitzer like what is attached to an AC-130-H gunship, then yes, they better get the targeting mechanism in for repairs.

My take is, I hope they are both great and play at a high level and there is no drop off in play between them. I’d like to the the 140mm Howitzer on both but only if our WRs can catch those projectiles without breaking fingers.

LONG LIVE THE GINGER ‘HOWITZER’ CANNON AND FRIENDS!

  36. Louis Friend Says:

I don’t care about who starts. I only care about making sure who is starting wins games. I’m confounded that there’s any argument about it since that’s the only thing that matters. Cannon for an arm? Loved by his team? Great leader? Future QB? Those things mean nothing compared to wins. I want the guy under center – ginger or geezer – who will bring those.

  37. robert8 Says:

people said I was crazy when I called freeman and nicks last year as well.

someone has to be the leader :-)

  38. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

2015 or 2016 are the possible starting dates for all together now:

    “The Cannon”

Baring injury to McCown. I like Glennon and wish him the best. Whenever he starts playing as the starter I will support him 100%. But I really think he can benefit from McCown’s experience in the NFL. With a weak o-line there is no doubt (look at last year’s stats) McCown is more mobile and accurate when pressured than Glennon.

I understand the MGM is ready to stone Joe for all the hype for Johnny football before the draft. But lets be a real fan now. Is about winning games for us now. The Schiano-nightmare is over and we are about to enjoy some real football. Look for the o-line to be solidify next year in preparation for “The Cannon.” Mike Glennon Mob just shake hands with Joe and enjoy the up coming season. 2014 is the year of The Clipboard for “The Cannon.” Our o-line is not ready for Glennon…

  39. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

I am eager to see “The Cannon” in preseason. Having Arroyo to work on his mechanics and the position in general should bring us a different MG8 this preseason. And don’t forget Tedford’s knowledge with QBs too. In addition to the freedom to be himself (Schiano’s chains are off) unlike last year the preseason should be interesting…

  40. BoJim Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Said:

    “And, btw…the nickname “The Cannon”?

Not really any good if he isn’t connecting on those cannons, which he isn’t.”
    _________________________________________________________

So you think he’s not improving? You seen him lately? Me neither.

McCown will start unless he gets hurt or sucks. Lovie is more comfortable with him. I am too. I hope he is playing great all year. “The Cannon” would really benefit by learning from Josh. After a year or two it will be his team.

  41. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Joe people are forgetting there is a possibility of us drafting a QB next year. If next year our pressing need is the o-line, I could see us going after a more mobile QB than Glennon. Of course , if that QB is available. I don’t mean to destroy MGM’s dream. I’m just keeping it real…

  42. Bobby Says:

@Bonzai… “Not really any good if he isn’t connecting on those cannons, which he isn’t.”

You need to go other places and read about QB performance so far in mini camp. Glennon is connecting every bit as much if not more than McCown. I think McCown is the opening day starter but on a VERY short leash.

  43. robert8 Says:

Denver 2.0 and MG8 is the new Peyton Manning

  44. Hawk Says:

McCown should be the opening day starter, unless injured. Even if Glennon out performs him (and it couldn’t be by much unless McCown has a major meltdown), McCown is still the guy to start, for MANY reasons.
Lovie asked McCown to come in and be the leader of this offense. McCown has done that in an exemplary fashion.
McCown has seen every kind of defense and will react quicker than Glennon.
Being a part of the building of the offensive playbook, McCown will have an edge (however slight) over Glennon in understanding what the offense will be expected to do.
Right this minute, Glennon is not ready to start for a team that expects to “win now”. Hopefully, he will be by the end of preseason, but not right now.
It would be nice if McCown and Glennon got equal snaps in the preseason, but because of new players/coaches/playbook, that isn’t realistic.
*I* hope that by the end of preseason, Glennon gives Lovie several sleepless nights before he makes the final decision as who will start against Carolina. I still hope that Lovie starts McCown, but with the comfort of knowing that his ‘backup’ can step in without missing a beat.

    http://www.joebucsfan.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php#
Sorry Joe, but those are the stats he put up last year. Which are pretty damn good for a rookie. Such a smart ass.

What are you “sorry” about. Joe doesn’t hide from Glennon’s stats, neither does The Mob. –Joe

  46. thomas 2.2 Says:

    Joe says:
“Thoroughly inaccurate. The reality is Glennon already has succeeded in being a good (and betting better) backup quarterback. He’s done well for his third-round draft status. Bucs fans should embrace what he’s done and his ability as a No. 2 QB. –Joe”

That applies perfectly to 34 yo journeyman, 3rd round pick Josh McCown. McCown has never started 16 games in a season. He started 14 once until Arizona realized that he was a backup, and 9 games twice. 5 prior teams & regimes, including the Bears, deemed McCown a career-backup.

Despite McCown’s improved play last year – they retained Cutler a mid-level starter over him. I guess the Bears didn’t think much of the 5 game sample.

You have a competition between a young QB with experience not deemed by the league yet as a career-backup QB, and one CLEARLY labeled as a backup by the league at large.

McCown gets the first snaps as starter. But anyone predicting that he will be better than a journeyman backup is purely guessing & hoping.

  47. Joe Says:

Welcome back Thomas! Don’t be a stranger dude.

  48. owlykat Says:

The reason the Bears kept Cutler is a starter should not be permanently replaced when he was just injured and got well. Now as to Cumming’s comment there is a statistical chance the Rays will win the World Series–but those odds are better than the chance the Sack Magnet is the starter. There is a good reason the Bucs had one of the lowest 3rd down completion rates in the NFL under Glennon last year and that is because Glennon was the worst QB under pressure in the NFL last year according to Pro Football Focus, while they rated Josh the best under pressure. The cream will rise to the top when we play the Carolina double digit sackers, and the Rams have even better sackers coming from all directions. So the Glennon Fans better hope he doesn’t start because he will be cut after about three meltdowns in a row by the Sack Magnet and he will be out of football because nobody wants a loser. Licht better trade him to the Giants now while we can get a good pick for him!!! Then we can trade up with that pick next year for a Franchise QB of the Future, which Lovie has never called Glennon.

  49. williethewonder Says:

I can’t believe the stupidity of those who call him the cannon. From 2011 until now, Glennon finished DEAD LAST in velocity of the 54 QBs who threw at the combine. Most threw in the mid to high 50s mph range. Glennon was 54th out of 54 at 49 mph and the only one who threw in the 40s. If you think that’s a cannon, I guess you think Josh Johnson had a cannon, too, because he also threw 49 mph back in 2008. Yeah, you gotta go back to 2008 to find another “cannon” like Glennon. Difference is, at least Johnson had “wheels,” if not a “cannon.” Glennon has neither.

I really wish people would shut their mouths about the 19/9 stat. does not mean a thing when you are 4-12 as a starting qb

    ——————————————————————————–
I’m presuming you’re a Freemanite, because everyone knows that JF5 went
0-3 as the starter for the first three games, “leading” the offense to 34 points total=11.3 ppg. BTW, the MG8 offense scored 254 points = 19.5 ppg.

So, MG8 went 4-9 for the year, but fully FIVE of those losses were against teams whose defenses were ranked in the TOP FOUR in the entire league in 2013. So Mike Glennon went 4-4 against all the other teams that were not in the top 4 defensively.

    tickrdr

Please note that I did not include the 19-9 stat anywhere in this post.

  51. Bobby Says:

Fans really are an ignorant group as a whole. So quick to write off players after one year and act like they’ve seen all they need to see. Same thing happened with McCoy and he turned out to be just a bit better than a lot of you predicted huh? Sure, it can work both ways and players can look good after one season and then be busts after that but no one, I mean NO ONE can
evaluate a QB after his rookie season, and especially when it was a damn good rookie season, and deem him not worthy of starting. Then some of you comment on how hard he threw at the combine…as if that is an indicator of his ability to throw with velocity. Forget about film. Forget about all his college throws. Forget about what Gruden or anyone else says about him. Let’s go with his combine stats. If it wasn’t so comical it would be pathetic.

  52. PRBucFan Says:

“Joe’s already is on record saying Glennon has no shot to start on opening day, barring an injury to McCown.

    This is McCown’s team.”

    Nothing else left to say.

  53. PRBucFan Says:

Not writing off Glennon, just acknowledging McCown’s transformation from journeyman to legitimate starter.

  54. Buc the Haters Says:

Why would Mike ‘the 16th strongest cannon in the league’ Glennon start over our team leader and extremely polished McCown? Guaranteed it’s not happening (barring injury).. McCown is taking us all the way this year.

  55. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Love how people are giving Glennon ZERO chance of starting the season (barring injury to McCown). While as of now McCown is taking the majority if 1st team reps in OTA’s that doesn’t make him a 100% lock come opening day. Keep making blanket predictions like that (I still remember the near 100% Glennon will be traded stuff), and the MGM will keep laughing at the doubters. If McCown plays better so be it, but I’ll hold decision until seeing them both in preseason.

  56. SteveK Says:

    Haters gonna hate.

A lot of panties in wads over Glennon not being traded.

Maybe the Freemanites should take their “My former QB was a pro bowl alternate (once)” license plates down and get on the “19-9″ band wagon?

  57. PRBucFan Says:

You realize your going to be waiting a good while for Glennon to get his “chance” right?

And I am one of the leaders of the anti-Freeman rebellion lol

  58. PRBucFan Says:

I can’t wait till I’m right about this prediction too, people always get real quite in these here parts during those times.

  59. Barry Says:

Mike Cannon is young, better, and the future. McCown is old,a career back-up, and not the future. There’s only 1 option here.

  60. PRBucFan Says:

Again, your about to be proven incorrect Barry dear sir.

  61. Eric Says:

McCown is four years younger than Manning, without the bad neck.

I see him having four years left.

Not like he’s worn himself out or taken a lot of hits.

    Go Josh!

  62. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

    @Barry

You are absolutely right. Start McCown for 2 years while “The Cannon” learns how to be an NFL qb. The Cannon expected to start Sept. 2016 until then Clipboard Baby!

  63. Aaron Says:

I really don’t care who starts at QB. I just want to win…if it is Glennon he has to be 100% better then he was last year for us to contend for the playoffs.

    Go Bucs!
