Lovie, Licht “Inseparable”

Bucs GM Jason Licht explained to a Phoenix radio station how tight he is with Lovie Smith.

When there is friction between a front office and the football staff, it rarely makes for a good football product. And when there is a good football product with friction (read: Marty Chokenheimer and A.J. Smith with the Chargers), upheaval lurks just around the corner.

So in trying to build a team, it helps when the leaders are on the same page. With Bucs general manager Jason Licht and Bucs coach Lovie Smith, the duo are not just on the same page, but in the same sentence.

So long as that tome is found at One Buc Palace.

Licht appeared on KGME-AM 910 in Phoenix yesterday to talk football and in particular, the Bucs. Licht explained how he and Lovie are two football peas in a pod.

“Lovie is a dream, especially for a rookie GM,” Licht said. “That relationship, that GM-head coach relationship isn’t talked about enough. It has to be good. It has to be solid. We are a lot different in some things. He doesn’t curse. He doesn’t drink. [Laughs]. He rarely misses a church service. But here in the office, we are inseparable.

“[Lovie] can get along with anybody. He is the easiest, most calm person to have as a head coach. When bullets are flying and you are making quick decisions and it appears things are falling apart in contract negotiations and you have a head coach who says, ‘Hey Jason, don’t worry about it. Don’t let them hold you hostage. Let’s go to the next guy.’ That gives you a lot of peace of mind.”

Licht also had a couple of other interesting things to say. He noted that on his third interview with Team Glazer, he decided to relax and to just be himself. If the Bucs didn’t want him for what he is and who he is, oh well. The move proved to be a winning formula for Licht.

Also, Licht admitted one of the teams that was trying to trade for Bucs backup quarterback Mike Glennon was the Arizona Cardinals.

    Yahoo Sports reported that the Vikings also inquired about Glennon. Yes, the same Vikings who passed on John Manziel, wanted Glennon on their team! Things that make you go HMMM!

  2. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Glennon>Manziel

    2014: McCown>Glennon

    2015: Glennon>McCown

    Just like that.

    @lightning,
    Passing on Manziel in the 1st round is a lot different than trading a 4th or 5th or 6th rd pick for Glennon

    Glennon > Manziel???? really? LOL This must be where that saying about “opinions” come into play…

  4. Macabee Says:

    I like both of these guys – as people and as professionals. Sounds like the Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison of the NFL!

  5. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

    You mean the same Vikings that started Freeman as soon as he walked in the door???? That makes sense to me…

  6. SAMCRO Says:

    Bravo Mac,

    Perfect analogy! LMAO ..spot on

    Felix = Glennon

    Madison = Manziel

    Love it! :)

    The Vikings may very well have inquired about the Cannon, he outperformed the entire rookie class last year. He also has nearly year of starting experience under his belt.
    He would’ve been a whole hell of a lot cheaper than Bridgewater and was a possible starter this year.
    Was Licht looking for a second rounder?

    Harry,

    Unless you know for certain they were offering 4th or 5th or 6th rounders, and not 2nd and 3rd rounders, then that, too, is just your “opinion”.

    I wonder if he’s talking about McCoys agents holding him hostage.

    Perfect.

  11. Harry Says:

    @lightning,
    Thats fair. Time will tell. Don’t get the wrong idea either. If The Cannon starts I will be behind him 100%. Believe me, I would love to be wrong about him and see him turn into the next Payton Manning.

    Why did’nt Licht reveal all the teams that tried to make a deal for Glennon and the specifics of the proposed deals? Why the secrecy? Inquiring minds want to know, at least this one.

    We’ll never know. He didn’t even say there was an offer in this case. Talk is talk. It’s just talk.–Joe
