Two Or Three?

June 2nd, 2014

two or three

So, will it be two or three? That’s what Joe’s bartender often asks (the answer, depending on who is driving, is often woefully under-calculated.).

But when it comes to Bucs quarterbacks, the question is more relevant. Will Bucs coach Lovie Smith keep three quarterbacks on the regular season-53, or is he more apt to keep but two? Depends who you ask.

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune seems to believe Lovie will only carry two, so he Twittered.

And we all know who those two will be, barring injury: knighted starting quarterback Josh McCown and the quarterback of the future, Mike Glennon.

(Column intermission: Doesn’t “quarterback of the future” label seem like some appliance advertisement out of the 1960s? You know, car of the future, oven of the future, iron of the future, washing machine of the future.)

Now the question is, which of the Bucs’ camp meat quarterbacks will find their way on the Tampa Bay practice squad, the pride of Northwestern Mike Kafka or video star Alex Tanney? Joe has a hunch Tanney, as some other NFL team may lap up Kafka on the open market come September. He also may not be eligible for the practice squad. .

I don’t see Lovie keeping three unless one of the ‘camp-fodder’ QBs REALLY makes an impression (and I doubt it). But, the fact that Lovie has been more prone to keeping two in the past, and has stated recently, that he plans on keeping only two, does not necessarily make it a done deal. Remember, Lovie, before this year, had never picked a WR in the first round.
However, the problem Lovie will have with keeping three QBs is that he could use that space for an extra O-lineman or D-lineman (whom he can’t get enough of). With the talent level (or lack thereof) of the O-line, it wouldn’t hurt to have a young, unknown, hopefully diamond-in-the-rough kind of player to groom for the future without the risk of losing on the practice squad.

If it’s Sam Adams, I’d go with three.

  4. Eric Says:

Alex could put on a hell of a halftime show.

  5. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I don’t see much sense in having three, unless you really believe you have a future starter at #3. If you have to go to your third QB due to injury, you aren’t going to win anyway. No sense waste a roster spot on a guy that isn’t going to help you win.

  6. Mr Magoo Says:

Ahhh…looks like Killians Red to me. Great choice! Not so sure about our QBs.

  7. Dougy balls Says:

Pablo says keep 4 ( just because that’s the stupid answer he would give ) louden says keep … ( never mind what an a hole would say that stands on a bible and talks out of his a$$ )

  8. Dougy balls Says:

But like joe says 2 is where they go . Not for sure if they waste a practice squad spot there when there trying to groom some young talent to provide depth

  9. Macabee Says:

With the caliber of people at both RB and WR, roster spots are going to be at a premium. They will carry two QBs with one hidden away on the PS if needed.

  10. Bucfan#37 Says:

I’ll go with winning season of the future.

  11. buc4lyfe Says:

Worst off-season ever, it’s supposed to get better with time but ok I guess thanks Roy. Most often than not two dress and one’s inactive, on a team with a new coach that hasn’t established their identity yet I would hope they kept the especially since it’s one of our weaknesses

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If they eventually have to keep 3, then why on earth would they not bring in someone who is serious competition for Glennon?????

  13. buc4lyfe Says:

Haha because glennon is the future of the franchise haha did you not see the quick feet and cannon arm

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

How much do guys earn for playing on the practice squad? Let’s assume they never get called up and have to live on practice squad money.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    “Worst off-season ever, ”

    ——-

Really? So dramatic! So you consider this offseason worse than the one where we gutted the team (namely Derrick Brooks, the greatest player we’ve ever had), fired our Super Bowl Winning coach, and hired Raheem Morris???? Wow, what a stupid statement!

  16. finishers Says:

    off topic
but when does this year’s training camp start?

  17. NY Buc Says:

Put me in the 2 QB + 1 practice squad guy camp. Most likely if a team loses both its first and second string QB’s the season is already shot and the team is playing for pride (and job security for next season). A lot of other positions that take a beating (RB, linemen, etc) are better served with the extra roster spot.

Try to keep up….I should have said Roy cummings to make it clear that my comment sarcasm to this tweet….just for you, I meant there is a lot of useless information floating around. Damn Joe i know you post things like this just to sit back and laugh….seriously Hawaiian Buc at a glance this is obviously the best off-season we’vE had since dungy was here.

Hawaiian Buc so my baby can read doesn’t work well enough for adults

  19. Harry Says:

If its Peroni, I go for four, especially if there might be wings involved.

The Cannon is trade bait. I go for 3 QBs; 2 after they cut a deal for to trade The Cannon

    @ Hawaiian Buc

Just arrived Hapuna….beat…..woke up 3:30 am eastern….will be on your time for posts for 15 nights…..

As for the two or three…..I think it makes more sense to keep two unless one can be on the practice squad….or one is tradeable early in the season…..

  23. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF…are you out of you’re mind? You are in Hawaii. Architek is right you silly Bucs fan. We like you here and all, but it’s time to chill out. Enjoy that place. Unless you’re missing N.C. or something. You can’t be bored.

Either way do what you must. If you need that much Bucs news 24-7 you know where to go.

Enjoy the vacation you lucky mofo. Mine is June 30th thru July 9th. Going to a resort outside of Orlando with the kids for 5 days of Disney and Sea World. Then headed to West Palm for about 3-4 days by the beach.

Those of you that are annoyed with my posts will get a break for about 12 days at the beginning of next month. I’m not TBBF.

TBBF you’re in Hawaii though. Ahhhh enjoy it.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Oh and as far as QB is concerned. I say they only need one QB and that’s the Ginger Cannon.

“Mike Glennon is the future” – Lovie Smith

  25. gatrbuc17 Says:

    LOL Joe……………..LOL

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @buc4lyfe,

My bad, didn’t get the sarcasm. There’s so many people on this board that actually believe we’ve had the worst off-season ever, I just took your statement at its word.

But I’ve read this statement of yours about 10 times, and have yet to understand what the hell it means: “Hawaiian Buc so my baby can read doesn’t work well enough for adults”. If that’s a nice statement, thanks. If it’s not, up yours, lol.

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @TBBF,

Glad you got here safely. That flight is a mofo!!! It’s a lot worse going back too. Usually takes me about 2 or 3 days to adjust.

And for those telling him to stay off JBF, you obviously have never been to the Big Island. That place pretty much shuts down at 8pm. That’s definitely JBF time!!!

  28. louden Says:

@Dougy balls: wow, but sorry i am not impressed about what kind of beautifull outlined arguments you have. that kind of “thinking” can get you nowhere – someone has to care. you are running on emotions, which is good, but sometimes its better to use coommon sense aka brain.

get some dosis of johnn lennons imagine, kid.

on point of topic: also favoring taking 2 into season. But like somedoby already said – i would also love to see some real compitition for Glenno.

But thinking about the overall roster, it might be a good idea watching Glennon in the new offense and his effectiveness in it – then deciding about bringing in compi.
But good to give him full confidence letting him ball; then deciding on which positions need an upgrade the most and with which resorces.

personaly i think glennon has a chance to be an good enough QB – i am more of an Glennon doubter.
    @dougy balls:
as for standing on bilbe. I believe in god – but not exactly in religions . therefore bible too.
    i was just saying(as a whole stating an german writer), that the bible says “the earth once was an paradise”- adding: anything could be;
adding: the earth can be a paradise again – (because) everything is possible.
and i am questioning your ability, dougy balls, to be a person, that people want to hang around with, because the way of you talking/writing with people , that you dont even know aand by showing no real knowledge about what is going on in the world, but acting like a chump here, little boy (no offense to chumps).
wana make the world a better place? start with things that you can change. YOU CAN CHANGE. how about just trying being a good one? or are you to lazy, and you would rather stay on course, because its easier?
    - get a clue – make sth happen.
still wishing a good day to everyone – GoBucs!
