Underwear Football

May 30th, 2014

Joe gets a lot of emails, Twitter messages and just plain ol’ comments on this here corner of the Interwebs asking about “How is [insert name] doing?” It is really hard to tell.

The Bucs, and all NFL teams, are in the underwear football season. Outside of seeing quarterbacks throwing to receivers, there is not much you can glean from underwear football.

There is no hitting, only a modicum of blocking, and zero tackling.

Even Bucs coach Lovie Smith noted there is only so much that can be determined from underwear football.

“I see we have a long ways to go just like on the offensive side of the football,” Lovie said when asked about his defense. “It’s just so much to put in, so many little fine details that you have to get ironed out by practice, but I see improvement each day. They’re getting more and more comfortable in their roles. I’m talking – [defensive tackle] Gerald McCoy is a great player, but he has to get to know our defense, what’s expected of him and in every situation, same thing for [linebacker] Lavonte David and across the board. We have excellent coaches on our staff and I see it coming though, we’re going to be a good football team and in order to be a good football team we have to play great, not good, but great defense and I think we will.”

Right now the Bucs are going through glorified walk-throughs. That’s really all underwear football is. Walk-throughs at full speed.

What the Bucs are doing now is a long, long, long way from what they will be doing in training camp and preseason games, much less what the team will be doing in regular season games. Still, Joe understands why Bucs fans are excited. There’s a lot to get excited about, and NFL fans’ thirst for football is nearly unquenchable.

    _________

    Tell that to Sean Lee.

You can tell a lot about Rachel Watson if she participated in “underwear’ football.
Other than that…its just part of the process….there are still players being cut so evaluations are going on….and there are dreaded injuries that still happen.
This time of year for your team usually no news is good news!!!

Wow. That new advertising banner that keeps popping up isn’t annoying at all.
I love the challenge of chasing it down on every new page, although I’m doing it in my underwear.

Joe’s unfamiliar, but becoming familiar, with this development for some mobile readers. –Joe

Joe, what about our starting kicker?

Since he was injured, would you tell us how he is moving around and how his kicks are looking?

Barth is a bit of a risk this year. Did the time off or the injury throw off his game? He’s a great kicker, but it wouldn’t be the first time one hasn’t been the same after an injury. Martin surely wasn’t.

  5. Tom Says:

Agree with Bonzai, I am quite concerned about Tampa Bay kickers after last season’s disaster.
I remember hearing that Barth had recovered nicely but I’m curious to see how he is performing

Okay. I admit I was one who asked about progress of players. Truth is, there is no REAL news nowadays about who is doing what and who is going to be on our team. And my question was desperate….will they be a cohesive team by opening day?

The fact is, its hard to relate to this all new players team…or almost all new. Who the hell are they wearing Bucs uniforms? And all the pondering in the world will not tell us if Tedford ( sp>) will be any better than Schiano coming from college.

I’m trying to have faith, trying to love the new guys, but face it…..I don’t’ have either….time to go check out Fl college football me thinks…

There’s a x on the pop up just hit it and it closes not that big a deal. You guys are forgetting this is a free website that is the best on the internet for getting multiple new bucs stories everyday even on holidays. Thanks joe for this site hated just having profootball talk to go look at stories one buc story a week. This site is my most visited site and probably everyone else on here. So to sum it up quit your bitching about pop ups and enjoy the free site.

No problem. Joe was simply trying to investigate whether this was some bizarre happening. Thanks for the kind words. –Joe

Underwear football can be important. The decision to go with Glennon as QB of the future was made, in part anyway, of how he performed in the offseason at OBP.

    That was underwear football.

Brett signed and the cut on the basis of underwear football, and Bridgewater dropped in the draft because of his pro day.

I think they use it as an evaluative tool a little more than they care to admit.

I’m familiar with the little X Jeff-O-Genius. It was happening on every page and was very annoying, it seems to be fixed now so thanks Joe.

Hey Joe hv I ever told how much I love chics in tight white pants? Blah blah blah blah blah. Guess u hv to report on something. I’m so fricking ready for training camp then the season. Heck Herm “u play to win the game” Edwards has us in the fricking Super Bowl for crying out loud. I sure hope we set the tone the opening game against the kitty cats. Just remember I’m sure Ron Rivera has some extra motivation being that Lovie fired his ass for Marinelli!!! Go Bucs!!!
