Chris Owusu Gets Singled Out

Bucs wide receiver Chris Owusu has turned into a bit of a practice phenom the past couple of years.
The guy runs crisp routes, catches everything, has plenty of speed, and he looks the part.
But then it seems to fall apart for him when the lights come on. Last year, Owusu was a training camp superstar but fumbled a punt, dropped a kickoff, dropped two passes, and seriously injured his ankle on a first-half-ending reception during the preseason opener.
Owusu wasn’t heard from much again, despite major changes in the Bucs’ receiving corps.
But Owusu is back, and today Lovie Smith singled him out — without being asked. The head coach said Owusu has “been pretty good since Day 1” and “caught my attention.”
Those who have followed Joe’s practice notes this spring would know Joe has been impressed by Owusu, too. He runs very crisp routes and seems to have a strong “catch radius,” to use the popular scouting term.
As Lovie would say, “this is underwear football.” It doesn’t mean a lot, but it is something.
Lovie also has referenced the 4.3, 40-yard-dash speed Owusu had in college on more than one occasion.
Owusu has a shot to make the roster. Not much, but it’s there.

Owusu can just be good at camp and be bad on the field during game day. I don’t think he can be an offensive weapon, he just never flashed during the preseason and the regular season last year only at practice. Let’s see if he can keep it up, however there is more doubt than confidence.

With him I think it’s all mental. Bright lights scares him or something.

@Sneedy: Or may be he is very limited as a player and is not capable beyond what we have seen. In practice a lot of players look good going against scrubs and slackers.

Unfortunately that’s the way some are, great in practice but when it’s game time they fold from the pressure to perform when it counts. Hopefully he can put that behind him this year.

Owusu comes from an athletic familly and perhaps a very smart one….Sister….basketball @ Columbia….Brother football @ Harvard & another brother football at Stanford. Owusu stayed injured all through college and appears to continue to be injury prone….no doubt he can fly.
The Bucs have a great basketball team and a track 4/100 relay team….I hope he makes it but we have a slew of WRs & RBs….

I have always debated how we use our weapons and our ability to put them in situations to utilize their skills.
For example, Sean Payton almost always uses his WRs for what they are good at, he doesn’t square peg in a circle his weapons. We have had quicker and speedy guys in the offense in the past but outside of Galloway before A Bryant arrival we struggled with creating favorable matchups.
I hope Tedford can do that for the offense.

Chris Owusu is afraid of getting hit.
Some players focus on making play. Other try to brace themselves for hits and sacrifice focus. Chris Owusu is the later.

Pat Y. had the following info on the undrafted free agent signings. Joe usually does go into these numbers, so here thay are:
I just got a look at the list of signing bonuses the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave to their undrafted rookie free agents, and it’s pretty enlightening.
Apparently, the Bucs think defensive end Chaz Sutton, offensive tackle Matt Patchan and defensive tackle Euclid Cummings have the best chance of making the roster. Those three rookies received the highest signing bonuses from the Bucs.
Sutton led the way with a $15,000 signing bonus. Patchan was next at $14,850 and Cummings was third with a $10,000 bonus.
The rest of the signing bonuses are as follows: receiver Solomon Patton $9,000, linebacker Nate Askew $7,500, offensive lineman Josh Allen $5,000, receiver Aaron Burks $5,000, guard Andrew Miller $5,000, cornerback Keith Lewis $3,000, and safety Mycal Swaim $3,000.
Quarterback Brett Smith, who already has been released, received a $3,000 signing bonus.

Osuwu got his stats last year in junk time when the games were over and the opponents defenses were in prevent. He stinks.
