Bucs Add A QB, Cut Noodle Arm Brett Smith

May 21st, 2014

The Bucs signed the “trick shot quarterback”

Apparently, the Bucs’ hierarchy saw what Joe saw over the past five days: Wyoming QB Brett Smith looked like a noodle-armed college quarterback.

Quickly signed by the Bucs as an undrafted free agent, and a guy many fans believed was a “quarterback of the future,” Smith was cut today in a flurry of roster moves.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed tight ends Cameron Brate and Ian Thompson, plus wide receiver Quintin Payton. Also inked was veteran QB Alex Tanney, who has bounced around with the Chiefs, Cowboys and Browns since being undrafted in 2012.

The Bucs cut defensive lineman David Hunter and punter Jacob Schum to make room. Tampa Bay also filled its last open roster spot.

Unfamiliar with Tanney? Well he’s world famous for being the “trick shot quarterback.” Enjoy the video below. It never gets old for football junkies.

Laughing at the handful of uninformed fans who actually thought Brett Smith had a shot. Obviously they never watched film or read the mini camp reports. He’ll never make it in the NFL, either, because an UDFA QB who gets cut this early is being told, “you’re just not NFL material, unfortunately”.

  4. Eric Says:

    Wow!

Now if we can just get the league to allow us to have a truck at wide receiver, we got a new “cannon”.

  5. Jim Says:

Should have taken a shot at Aaron Murray! I still feel ‘cement shoes’ aka Mike Glennon is not the QB of the future. Hope I’m wrong. If Glennon works out to be the man of the future, I will gladly eat crow!!!

The Brett Smith Posse dies before it can even get going.

  7. Bucsalltheway Says:

I wanna see him do the trick of landing a starting qb role I bet he’s never done that trick on point lol

  8. BamBamBuc Says:

Ha, the Brett Smith Posse only existed to infuriate the MGM. Nothing like a good jab to get someone riled up.

  9. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Will we have an Alex Tanney Troupe? A group for the Anti-Glennon Mobsters to join? Will the defunct Brett Smith Posse members join the Josh McCown Society? As the world turns will be back tomorrow with more QB fanboy drama!

It’s like he knew! Team with Haint Mega Recievers + QB who can accurately throw football 10′ high?
= devastation for defenses thru out the land!!!

Wonder how he does with moving goal post?

Damn i really liked Brett Smith. Thought he was a shoe in for sure. Heard Tedford played with his dad. Awwwwwkward.

LUVMYBUCS – Woohoo, somebody found a comeback win by Glennon!!! Back in 2011! Did you watch that game? Glennon throwing a pick 6 is one reason they were down so much. As for the comeback, The D set up two of those TDs with fumble recoveries, giving Glennon a short field, and then the D scored another TD on a pick 6 to put the game away for good. But I’ll give Glennon his due, at least in that game he took advantage of the field position his D gave him, unlike the Bills game last year when the D allowed the team to start inside Bills territory 4 times and we got 2 FGs and threw 2 INTs… but hey, we won that game.

  14. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

mike glennon & doug martin will get reps this season and do well, then will be traded for a 1st round pick next off-season. so that the Bucs can package two 1st round picks too move up in the draft and select a quarterback.

Lovie Smith(all that matters) has spoken. No need for video’s and debate about this never ending Mike Glennon saga. I care what Lovie thinks right now and his critique, not anyone on here anymore when it comes to Glennon.

    Lovie Smith :

“I love Mike Glennon.” “Mike Glennon is the QB of the future”.

Thee end. I wish it was, but it won’t end. Some fans are in such disbelief that they won’t let it sink in or accept it. Maybe by October it will finally sink in.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Newbucsfan!!! …put your crystal ball away for the next 6 months. That’s a ludicrous prediction being made up in May. I guess whatever works for you.

I was a member of the Brett Smith Posse. It is a dark day. The posse has disbanded and gone their separate ways. Some are headed to Jersey to join the Freemanites, some headed to Cleveland to join the Johnny’s and the rest will stay local and smoke weed with the Rasta Seferians. I am staying local.

  22. Mike Says:

I’m gonna have to agree with Buc1987 here. Fans still crying about a QB that is not coming here. Put your seatbelts on and just enjoy the ride for once

  23. BamBamBuc Says:

Just responding to LUVMYBUCS, 1987. Fans want to bring it up, I’m willing to point out the truth, the facts. I wouldn’t want anyone to be swayed by skewed or even false information. Like you, I have my doubts this conversation will stop any time soon. Personally, I don’t think there’s much more to truly add other than minute details, historical data, and such. This year is pretty well set, like it or not. Now we must wait and let time tell if L&L made the right call or wrong one. I trust them to do what’s best for the team, and maybe this year was the “wrong time” for the “right thing” for them.

  24. ToesOnTheLine Says:

But…but did Lovie not watch the YouTube highlights of Brett Smith!? Surely he would have seen the athleticism that Tedford demands for his speed in space read option offense that Brett Smorh would excel at! How can this be…Glennon sucks, yada yada

This MGM’er will continue to gloat if for no other reason than to laugh at all the eyeball testers who couldn’t tell an NFL quality QB from their UPS guy. The sooner the ‘in denial’ crowd can accept that Lovie is moving forward with Glennon and McCown (for now) the happier your livers will be

  25. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Make that Brett Smith…the MGM giddiness got the best of me 🙂

Ain’t that the truth! I’ve loved the last two weeks since the draft.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

BamBam…it’s all good man. I don’t see “the future” when I see Glennon play either. I see a possibility of “the future”. Only because I’m going on what Lovie and many others have said. There has been much more positive press about this kid than negative. I know, because I’ve scoured the net.

Lovie says he’s the future. So I have to believe him. I’m not going to try and conspire some cockamamie read between the lines theory like some other fans try and do all the time. It’s like they make these crazy assed predictions and expect people to say. Yeah you’ve got a point there. Wanting to be right. (not saying you’re one of those people either)

I’m trying my best to not even talk about the kid for a few months. Give it a rest. Then again I tried that with Manziel too and that lasted about a day.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

    ToesOnTheLine…true dat!

  29. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ lightning

Me too, let’s face it none of us can be certain in Glennon will be the answer but to listen to all the 90% gone, Glennon sucks, Lovie brought in McCown because Glennon will be traded nonsense deserves some good natured ball bustin’ backlash. We gave the last boob almost 5 years to flame out as the franchise QB, so what’s the problem giving MG8 another season hopefully under better circumstances to see what he can do?

  30. BamBamBuc Says:

1987, you can refrain from commenting on this, but I have to say something. I’ve watched that game against FSU over and over. That game right there is exactly what I see in Glennon. The video you linked is showing Glennon’s plays only, so we can’t see the INT by NC St or the blocked punt that assisted in that comeback, but it is a great example of what Glennon did well, and what he didn’t do well in college and give a good comparison to last year. FSU is a good team, they did get pressure in Glennon’s face a lot. Watch him retreat, watch his mechanics break down and instead of stepping up when pressure comes from the side, he fades back, throws off the back foot. That almost led to INTs multiple times in that game alone. He still does that in the NFL. Then watch the ball placement on his throws. Some are very good, others are way off. Again, some could have led to INTs, others were simply uncatchable, and others (the good) led to great YAC. Then lastly is his decision making. Throwing into double coverage when there wasn’t pressure, throwing underneath when the game is on the line (great bit by announcers on the next to last drive of that video) and failing to attempt to win the game. That underneath throw on 4th & 10 that gained about 5 yards could have lost the game and FSU would have won. Your team has a shot to win, all you have to do is take it. If you succeed, you’re a hero, if not… at least you did everything you could. They got lucky to get another shot and win the game (and even then almost gave it away again throwing into two defenders hands before the ball hit the ground).

Want to see that game again? Watch any Bucs game last year, but substitute the last play and the final score of the FSU game. That about sums it up.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

BamBam…the only comment I can make on it is I saw the poor decision making in the video too. I also saw a lot of those FSU defenders go on to be drafted after that season. It was a tough, tough D. Pretty much what carried FSU throughout the season. I watched the original game from start to finish, so I did remember the 4th qtr. Which is why I posted that game. Some are saying(MGM) he is NFL starter ready to go. I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying perhaps his game can be polished under McCown and Tedford. If that happens. Who knows?

  32. Mike Says:

You Know BamBamBuc…… I agree to a point. I watched the whole game. They may have only showed bits and pieces, but the kid loves the game. Much like our team last year, injuries, no really talent to catch but VJAX, I’m not excluding Wright who seems to be a gem, but the young man throw over 30 TDs each of his seasons with NC State with little help. I believe with the system and weapons we’ve added, that this young man can grow. Just don’t watch the NCS vs FSU game….. Watch them all. This guy can throw it rather well. And it’s obvious L&L see the same thing. I’m not MGM, but I support Glennon because a lot of throw out minor tidbits and haven’t watched every game the guy played in NCSt

  33. lightningbuc Says:

    Buc87,

I know you’re a huge Seminoles fan, so I’m surprised you didn’t link to the video of the athletic and crafty Winston eluding pressure from the Publix baker manager, and then using his speed to burst up the aisle, out the front door with the crab legs, and take it to the house….literally, to HIS house!

  34. Mike Says:

Lol! I’m a FSU fan myself! Not funny!

  35. Couch Fan Says:

    @Lightning

I got to say if Winston can avoid NFL Defenders like he avoided security on the way out of Publix… the guy has a bright future. I am still waiting to hear exactly how you walk into a grocery store and “forget” to pay. Lol, Gotta get my shots in on the Criminols

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Ha ha ha ha. That kid’s father is right. He does need a chaperone around him 24-7.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

LOL Couch get in all the shots you want. Allow me to counter with.
Thee National Champion Florida State Seminoles. Nuff said and that is all.

  38. Couch Fan Says:

Lol Hey Im not hating. Congrats. How does it feel to be relevant again? Don’t get use to it though, my Gators are going to be back on the upswing!!

  39. BamBamBuc Says:

Mike – I haven’t watched every game, only the ones I have had access to (about 7) from NC State, and every game from last year (have them all recorded). Again, I didn’t say he was absolutely horrible. You can see when he really hits everything well. When he anticipates the break, throws on time and hits a location with good mechanics and some zip. He can do it. What I haven’t seen change in any of his years as a QB is how and when his mechanics break down. When he fails to read blitz, or when protection breaks down too quickly, his initial reaction is to “fade” or drift backwards. That puts him in a horrible position “mechanically” (throwing off the back foot, all arm-strength throws) and affects his velocity and accuracy. The rare occasion he steps up, everything works. But he didn’t correct that issue his senior year, didn’t correct it last year with NFL (or at least kind of NFL) coaches. He’s still making the same mistakes. Which either means that he is not learning from the coaching or it is an “automatic reaction” that trumps training when those circumstances kick in. If it’s the reaction, he won’t improve.

It’s kind of like this. A big guy throws a punch that stops just short of hitting someone. Many people have an automatic reaction, flinch, cringe, duck, run… but fighters have a different reaction, counter, dodge, move in, attack, defend. Maybe they can train that out of him, but from my personal experiences, that’s not an easy thing to do. Many professional fighters still back straight up when under attack instead of moving sideways then counter attacking.

Yeah, usually after forgetting that I need to pay for my stuff, I’m reminded as I get to the front of the store and see all those cash registers and people waiting in line. That’s when a light bulb goes on, and I remember that I need to pay before I head out with my goods.

For all you ex Smith Fans who cannot stomach watching Glennon wreck another season, welcome to the Kafka Mob! Did you notice when Glennon was throwing interceptions this week, Kafka didn’t throw any. When Glennon was once again inaccurate in his throws to the point his receivers were having to lay out to catch his passes, they didn’t have to do that for Kafka’s passes. Remember when Kafka put Northwestern on the football map? He didn’t have just one lucky game like Glennon’s FSU victory. Kafka was the real deal and he still is. The difference is if Glennon improves Lovie can get a draft pick for him, and know he will have a better backup for Josh–KAFKA, but with Kafka out of football and forgotten for a year, Lovie can’t get a pick for him. Note that Lovie never said Glennon is the Buc’s Franchise QB, only the QB for the future. Wonder which team he saw as Glennon’s future?

  43. Couch Fan Says:

Thats a nice fantasy Owl. Keep coming up with ridiculous situations that will never happen. If nothing else they are entertaining!
