Becht: Glennon Could Start Opening Day

May 19th, 2014
"Follow Josh McCown, my son."

“Follow Josh McCown, my son.”

The Josh McCown Deniers, aka veteran members of the Mike Glennon Mob who spend their nights knitting “19 and 9” banners, may have a new leader, former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht.

Nowadays seen and heard on the Buccaneers Radio Network, BSPN and NBC Sports Network, Becht says Glennon could become the opening day starter.

“They’re going to compete this year. I mean listen, we all think ‘Josh McCown’s going to be the starter. So be it.’ But they’re gonna let these guys compete. There’s no reason in my mind to say that Mike Glennon couldn’t come out and win this quarterback race,” Becht told Pat Donovan of WDAE-AM 620 this weekend.

Becht went on to describe what a “huge asset” McCown is for Glennon, a daily veteran teacher Josh Freeman didn’t have early in his development, and that Glennon impressed at times last year with a weak supporting cast.

Becht said Glennon should be able to win the starting job no later than opening day next season, based on Becht’s personal interaction with Glennon and learning of his work ethic.

But Becht reiterated that this season’s starting job is very much on the table for No. 8.

“Josh McCown was brought in to push [Glennon], mentor him and make him better. If he is the best quarterback after training camp, there’s no reason my mind that Lovie and the general manager wouldn’t actually start him this year.”

Joe has a very different view. Joe is 100 percent certain this is McCown’s starting job for opening day, barring injury.

McCown was handpicked after Team Lovie watched every inch of film on Glennon this offseason. McCown also offers a more diverse skill set and experience. If McCown falters during the regular season, then, yes, Joe would hope the Bucs turn to Glennon. But Joe’s confident no real shot exists for Glennon to start opening day.

Joe hates to take the bait of the “19 and 9” crowd, who chirp Glennon’s touchdown-to-interception ratio like a woodpecker methodically drills a tree. But Joe knows numbers can be spun all over the place. For example, what happened in December, during those pesky five games that exposed Glennon after defensive coordinators had more film to study?

And what of Glennon’s historically dreadful performances in the second halves of games?

Again, all the statistical good and bad of Glennon are just numbers. For Joe, Glennon simply didn’t show enough — performance or potential — to call him “quarterback of the future.”

If numbers are everything Josh Freeman who threw 25 and 6 would be considered a great qb…. Not everything is about stats

  2. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    100% aye?

  3. unbelievable Says:

Many people actually were calling Freeman great after that season.

And then the Great Regression started. Some of the TD passes he threw that year were so damn lucky. Mike Williams catching balls that bounced off the DB’s helmets comes to mind..

  4. ToesOnTheLine Says:

No duh? Even the white cane crowd can see the writing on the wall. McCown was brought in as a known commodity because Lovie didn’t know Mike ‘the Cannon’ Glennon at all. After working with him and his staff he obviously had enough faith in him to not draft any QB’s in this draft. Competition is open, let the best QB win

  5. biff barker Says:

Nah, McCown is the guy and has been since Lovie signed on.
Only an injury or Freeman like meltdown could change this.

  6. BoJim Says:

The Cannon. Yessss. But McCown will start.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

L&L wouldn’t have paid $10mil to bring in a backup day one…..I think McCown will start and expect him to do well…..it will do Glennon some good to learn under McCown and sit a while.
As a fan, I root for both situations….McCown to start and do well now & for the next couple of years….then for Glennon to be the QB of the future. Affordable & no draft picks necessary…keep building the weapons for them…coaches…schemes. And…by all means a stout defense is on the horizon.

  8. mike n Says:

I blame dreadful 2nd halves on schiano and sullivan. Our coaching staff never could adjust to anything. Thats why everygame was close at halftime and we were beaten badly in the 2nd half.

  9. eric Says:

as long as it is not Johnny i’m good!

  10. William Says:

I wouldn’t be surprise if Arroyo will teach Glennon in one week more than what he learn all last year. McCown still will help Glennon no matter what but if Glennon show great improvement from last year I can see him getting the start. Preseason should be interesting this year.

We still don’t know how big of a box Schiano had for Glennon. I think any Bucs fan knows is Schiano had control of what Glennon could and couldn’t do. We might see a brand new Glennon this year. If he is the starter come September, Nov 2 agaisnt the Browns will be interesting at joebucsfan.com. May be Joe should change the number on the logo to 2 or 8 according to the QB with the best performance.

For me, I just want to see wins this year with great game plans and game plan adjustments when needed.

    Go Bucs!!!

  11. Bucfan#37 Says:

Joe, you could of left yourself an out giving Glennon a half percent shot at starting day one of the new season, maybe a tenth of one percent.

Sorry, barring injury, McCown is the man. –Joe

  12. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Joe has a hard time not sounding bitter whenever the subject of Mike Glennon is discussed, but at least we are no longer getting negative posts 2-3 times a day anymore… we should count our blessings! Go BUCS!

  13. Captain Stagger Says:

Joe…that 2nd half of games statistic is total BS. We had a coach who didn’t believe in half time adjustments…..what did you expect to happen????

And let’s not forget that 49ers game where Glennon took charged in a no huddle, and not once, but twice marched us down the field against one if the top defenses in the league. Then had the plug pulled on him because “that’s not what we practiced”

Do me a favor Joe, go watch the NC State tape before Schiano got his fingers in him. Watch his roll outs, his accuracy on the move, and his pin point deep balls. Watch him take chances and fit balls in small windows. Schiano was more conservative than the westboro baptist church and Glennon’s high sack rate, and low yards per pass attempt are a direct result.

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

McCown will start because all things are not equal. Glennon simply has too much to overcome.

Lovie is comfortable with McCown. He’s seen McCown do exactly what he want’s the Bucs to do…the “Dunkaneers”.

There is no downside to starting with McCown. If Glennon is actually better then he’ll get in soon enough. The first injury to McCown will be Glennon’s opening. Meanwhile there will be no pressure on Glennon IF he comes in in relief of McCown. If he’s anointed starter for the first game then all the “franchise QB” BS begins. Who needs that kind of pressure.

  15. GoNoles Says:

He did not show enough because he was a rookie working under horrific coaching with very minimal weapons (One, Vincent Jackson) and a scrap heap O-Line. I am not saying he will be the starter but with a new arsenal of weapons, an upgraded O-line, way better coaching staff, and a veteran QB to mentor him I believe he has every opportunity to win the starting gig.

  16. mpmalloy Says:

    19 TD’s and 9 Int’s?
    That’s pretty damn good.

    Charge!!!

  17. Patrick Says:

Joe, you are such a smartass.

  18. Patrick Says:

    Lol

  19. Espo Says:

I think people took that whole “Josh is our starter” like it’s written in stone. That was said to avoid a qb controversy but of course it would be stubborn not to start the best player after they’ve had time to evaluate. I still think Josh wins the job but I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

  20. BamBamBuc Says:

Capt Stagger: 2nd half situational statistics are not BS. His numbers dropped 40 points (QB rating) and every category was worse. You can blame it on coaching or anything else, but he wasn’t much different in college.

In 2012 at NC State, his 1st half rating was 10 points higher than his 2nd half rating. 4th quarter specifically was nearly 20 points lower than his “average” total rating (including 4th quarter stats) and over 30 points lower than his 1st quarter rating.

Additionally, at NC State 2012, most of his long passes (25+) came when the team was ahead 7 or less, tied, or losing (makes sense), except that most of those long passes came in the 1st and 2nd quarter, only 4 were in the 4th quarter. The team was 7-6 in 2012, which means they were losing in the 4th about as often as they were winning in the 4th, yet Glennon didn’t put up the passes needed to win those games, just like he didn’t last year under Schiano. You can blame Schiano, but he wasn’t influencing Glennon at NC State.

  21. lightningbuc Says:

Joe is 100 percent certain this is McCown’s starting job for opening day, barring injury.

    ___________

Keep swinging Joe! Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while. One of these days, one of your QB prognostications might actually come close to fruition.

  22. BucsfaninChina Says:

“For example, what happened in December, during those pesky five games that exposed Glennon after defensive coordinators had more film to study?”

You’re right. Glennon was toast. With Tiquan Underwood, Skye Dawson,Tim Wright, the offensive line who has the collective value of a ham sandwich, a running back plucked off the waiver wire, and a coaching staff that was all about sticking with its guns rather than adapt to what those D coordinators would show, how could this rookie QB NOT succeed?

It is silliness to predict Glennon as a career backup with the bum hand he was dealt last year, Joe. Glennon hasn’t yet started to show what he can do.

  23. biff barker Says:

Didn’t one of the OTA reports say McCown looked very sharp and outplayed Glennon?
Regardless, I do think Lovie is serious about giving him time to develop properly. Starting him last year just games in wasn’t exactly an ideal scenario.

  24. Brandon Says:

McCown was 13-1… doesn’t matter a bit now. New year, new team, last year’s stats are out the window.

  25. QB Talk Says:

Seems like Lovie and his staff decided to play it safe, just as the Jets may do if Vick starts over Geno. Glennon is the future why halt the progress made off of last season? Head scratcher on that one.

  26. BamBamBuc Says:

So sick of all the excuses as to why Glennon is SO good despite (this and that and that…). Glennon had a bad O-line? Andrew Luck led the Colts to the playoffs his rookie year with (according to Football Outsiders) the 26th O-line in the league and (according to Pro Football Focus) the 31st O-line in the league.

Glennon had no WRs? Luck had 34 year old Reggie Wayne, and the 2nd most yards on the team went to rookie TY Hilton as well as most receiving TDs. Journeyman (3 teams in 3 years) Donnie Avery was another option as well as rookie TE Coby Fleener.

Glennon had no run game? Luck had Donald Brown start only 4 games with 1 TD, 5th round rookie Vick Ballard started the other 12 with only 2 TDs. Luck had 5 rushing TDs, more than all the starting RBs combined and nearly half of the 11 rushing TDs the team had that year.

Glennon had Schiano as a head coach, that should be enough to ruin anybody. Well, Luck in his rookie season had Pagano in his first year as a head coach, and when he fell ill the team was taken over by Bruce Arians (also a rookie as a head coach in the NFL). Glennon had a 2nd year NFL head coach, and player off field issues to overcome. Luck had two rookie NFL head coaches with off field “distractions” (illness) to overcome.

So, please, stop with the “Oh, poor Glennon, he had so much to overcome it was impossible to succeed and his 19/9 was incredible considering the circumstances” BS. NO, Incredible would have been turning the team around and being respectable, winning more than 4 of 13 games and possibly having some 4th Qtr comebacks and game winning drives. That’s why you will find many people that “don’t see it” with Glennon. Not because we didn’t like the 4 wins and the 19/9, but because we didn’t see him lead the team when the team needed led “despite” the circumstances.

  27. Yar Says:

Lovie has never proclaimed McCown opening day starter, he has always said someone has to be #1 on the depth chart and that’s McCown. Whether and how long he stays there we will see. Has anyone seen Glennon lately, has he put on any weight/muscle? I think that is what the staff wants to see. The boy needs some groceries.

  28. BamBamBuc Says:

And before anyone goes there… Glennon’s defense was 21st in points allowed, Luck’s rookie year defense was also 21st in points allowed. The Bucs were actually better in yards allowed than Luck’s rookie defense was. The Bucs for Glennon were actually one of the best in the NFL in turnovers, while they were one of the worst in the NFL for Luck in 2012

  29. Nybucsfan Says:

Josh will start cause Glennon sucks you people are unreal. he was the starter they didn’t like him they pulled him and gave the starting job to josh. When was the last time that happend to a good QB ?

  30. SteveK Says:

Mike “cannon” Glennon is the QB of the future.

Hahaha @ Joe! One day, you all will be educated on Glennon’s franchise leading abilities.

  31. SteveK Says:

    BamBam,

Live your insightful knowledge, but who in the hell is comparing Glennon to Luck?

Luck was a #1 pick, highest regarded since Elway, and supplanted Peyton Manning from the Colts.

Mike Glennon can be really good, but he’s no Andrew Luck.

  32. getaclue Says:

Exactly, luck had arians calling plays

  33. Couch Fan Says:

Joe is the same guy who said Glennon would never start last year. Joe’s track records shows his guess is usually wrong and it will be once again.

    – LONG LIVE THE MGM!!

Please don’t fabricate. Joe didn’t say Glennon would never start last year. Joe said if Glennon starts the Bucs are in a world of trouble. Look at archives. It’s there about 100 times. –JOe

  34. Chef Paul Says:

I don’t get it. This “I know” “Guaranteed” “100% sure” BS. How many times does someone have to say that, then look like an idiot because what they KNOW didn’t come to fruition.

I hate to sound like a jerk, but when people say that, I lose respect for them. If you KNOW what is impossible to know, then what the hell else kind of BS are you feeding us?

It’s no different than “Mock drafts aren’t meant to be accurate.”

  35. Kevin Says:

Joe, I think what we saw in Glennon game in game out was exactly what Schiano told him to do. Play by play minute by minute. Be conservative….don’t try to make plays. Remember that game toward the end of the season….I believe against San Fran, and Glennon ran a very good no-huddle offense that led to a td if I remember right….could be wrong though. Then that was the last time we saw Glennon run that up tempo play calling the rest of the season. What’s to say they don’t see Glennon as being a good fit to run Tedfords “up tempo pro style” offense? I agree Glennon did not wow anyone including myself, but I don’t think he was ever really given the chance to do so. It’s like fans at a track meet criticizing an athlete for running a poor 100 yard dash after his coach has strapped 5 lb ankle weights on him. I want to see Glennon with the training wheels off, and that has yet to happen EVER in his NFL career.

  36. Couch Fan Says:

Oh sorry Joe, I guess I have to be more specific seeing how sensitive you are to looking silly. What I meant was you said Glennon would never start over Freeman. That is also in the archives. Look it up sensitive sally.

  37. BamBamBuc Says:

SteveK – not saying Glennon IS Luck.. or even “should be” Luck. Actually, quite the opposite. Showing without a doubt that Glennon is NOT Luck. Luck is an example of what a good rookie QB under difficult circumstances can still accomplish, while Glennon is an example of what an average or below average rookie QB can do under the same (or better) circumstances (better because his defense forced the 3rd most turnovers in the league, while Luck didn’t get much help from his defense). I’ve also shown that Glennon had the same issues late in games in college and couldn’t overcome them. And that’s only statistical analysis. There has been plenty of scouting showing the same issues between college and the pros. Just look at the “cons” of any scouting report and then look at his issues as a rookie and tell me honestly he doesn’t have many (if not all) of the same issues. Cons such as lack of mobility inside and outside the pocket. Holds the ball too long, poor anticipation, etc, etc.

If I wanted to compare average to below average QBs (no matter where taken in the draft) to Glennon, I would have brought up stats of Gabbert (bad QB, bad situation) or Ponder (bad QB, pretty good situation). But I don’t like the idea of comparing him to average/below average QBs, saying he’s the best of the bunch and calling that good enough. I, personally, would like better than that. I’d like a good QB (see Luck) in case we suffer injuries that put is in a bad situation. And if we’re in a good situation, a good QB can be great. This is also why I don’t compare Glennon to EJ Manuel or Geno Smith. Neither are good QBs, they may not be bad, and may be better than Glennon in the long run, but why compare mediocre to mediocre. Our standards should be higher than that.

  38. lightningbuc Says:

    Nostradamus Joe is NOT!

  39. Cobraboy Says:

Joe, those 5 games you harp on show the fecklessness of a crap coaching staff’s inability to adjust far more than Glennon’s ability to play the game at the NFL level…and I am hardly part of the “Glennon Mob.”

  40. deminion Says:

It a open comp if they didnt trust Glennon why didn’t they draft a QB? Mccown was brought in as a starter but he is a insurance policy too

  41. lightningbuc Says:

but why compare mediocre to mediocre.

    ______________

Many of the best QBs, both present and past, suffered through mediocre rookie seasons. Not saying Glennon will ever get to that, but those that believe they know he is destined to being “mediocre” for his entire career based on them witnessing 13 games is giving themselves a bit too much credit for having an eye for QB talent.

  42. Back, from Davie Jones Locker Says:

Prior to last year, McCown was planning to retire. He said so in the Media.
After his production last year, he earned an unexpected big payday.
He signed for two years. I believe the deal was “one as a starter/Mentor, one as a “Backup/mentor”

I fully believe they came in, expecting to Draft a QB this year. Unexpectedly, the discovered Glennons best talent once they got here.
    Intelligence.
The league keeps getting fooled by Athletic idiots.
Intelligence will win games. Ask Manning. Or Brady. Or Rodgers.
They now believe Glennon can become that QB.
McCown starts this year, and Glennon learns.
Next year- it appears it’s Glennins Team.,

All my opinions- but it tracks well with all that has occurred.
I’ll say this for Glennon. He should be named Lazarus
People keep burying him- and he keeps resurrecting himself to the forefront.
At this point, I can’t help but root for him- he must be a fighter!

  43. John McKillop Says:

@captain stagger, agree with you 100%. Schiano is so conservative, I’m sure glennon was told consistently to not make mistakes and lose games. Hard to learn to be a pro quarterback under those circumstances. Schiano’s belief that quarterbacks didn’t need coaching once they got to the nfl is complete bullspit, what an idiot. Glennon didn’t have a chance to succeed with that coaching staff, things look a lot different with this staff.

  44. Atlanta Buc Says:

    Dear Fred,Wilma, Barney and BamBamBuc,

Not a Glennon apologist at all, but lets at least make fair comparisons; Andrew Luck was the #1 pick in the first round of the NFL 2012 draft and is considered by most to be a generational-top QB, Glennon was a 3rd round 2013 pick, probably truly rated by most as a fifth or sixth round talent prior to the draft; the Bucs however, felt the need to grab him earlier in the 3rd Rd, probably knowing more about J.Freeman shortcomings at that time, than us fans and media actually knew. I think a better comparison for your argument long term is probably to compare Glennon’s performance to those QB’s selected in the same 2013 year: M.Manuel RD1,G. Smith RD2, M.Barkley RD4 and T.Wilson RD5. Your argument might have some merit if you did. He does not seem to be doing so badly, when I look at these other QB’s performances to date. Not that I love the kid or anything, but really just to be fair to him and the Rockstar, in regards to judging his value at where he was taken in that draft.
We all really have no basis to gripe yet about Glennon. Hell, there saying even the great Johnny taken in the 1st RD this year, will get a year to prove himself the starter!

  45. phil Says:

Lovie didn’t want Glennon until he found out that other teams did. If the offensive line can keep Glennon upright he has the arm to get the ball down the field

  46. MTM Says:

Mike Glennon Knobs will be sorely disappointed opening day. If the opposing defense rush McCown and Glennon see which one can avoid the rush. Glennon makes McCown look like Mike Vick in comparison. Pocket passing quarterbacks that cannot avoid the rush are fading into the background. Quarterbacks today need to be able to avoid the pass rush and gain time for receivers to get open or rush out of bounds for 5 yds +. The pocket passers may put up great numbers during the regular season but they can’t seem to make it out of the playoffs anymore.

  47. BamBamBuc Says:

Kevin – “don’t try to make plays”? That’s like telling the kid “don’t try to win”, coming from a coach who’s career depends on winning games. I understand the coach telling him to be careful with the ball, but to say “don’t take any risks, even when we’re behind in the game, to hell with winning, just look decent” is completely out of whack. Not even Schiano is that big of an idiot. And what player would actually follow that 100%? Every one of these guys should want to win… period. If the coach is telling them to lose, they should ignore the coach. Win the game. If you’re cut because you’re winning by taking a few risks, other teams will see the ability and “fire” in you and pick you up in a heart beat.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he told Clayborn not to sack the QB, don’t take that risk. Told Revis not to intercept the ball more, just knock it down. I’m sure all the poor performances were the coach telling them to “play it safe” and none of our players have the fire or desire to win enough to go out and fight to win anyway. To a degree, I understand, but I can’t accept a player laying down because the coach says so. If that’s the case, my guess is Schiano and Glennon put a few $100k on the Bucs losing more than 10 games. Take a dive and we’ll rake it in!!!

  48. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Judging by Joe’s standards, Joe would have cut Drew Brees His first 3 years “simply didn’t show enough – performance or potential – to call him “quarterback of the future.”

  49. BamBamBuc Says:

Fine, let’s be fair… compare Glennon situational stats to Wilson. You can see Glennon’s above, but Wilson’s rookie year his 4th quarter was pretty much in line with his 2nd quarter stats. He was best in the 1st quarter, and worst in the 3rd quarter (QB rating-wise). However, when the team was down, he was at his best. When his team was tied or behind, he had some of his best QB ratings. His best rating was when he held the lead by a huge margin. Of course, Wilson had Lynch carrying the ball and a pretty darned good defense (#1 in the NFL). But he didn’t exactly have great WRs and TEs.

Is that a better comparison of a 3rd round good rookie to a 3rd round average rookie? Wilson’s rookie year, Seahawks 11-5, 2nd in the NFL West, 1 playoff win.

Now, shall we say Glennon’s pretty good for a 3rd round rookie? Yeah, sure, compared to other 3rd round QBs, Glennon has done pretty well. Compare to ALL QBs, he’s pretty average or below average. Again, what do you want for your team?

  50. Tristan Berry Says:

    13-1 > 19-9

  51. brandonbucfan Says:

Very simple. Let it play itself out. Honestly, we have a lot of other things to worry about.

  52. Buc Fan #237 Says:

“I can guarantee you with 100 percent certainty that the Bucs will draft a QB in the draft.”

I wonder who said that? Hmmmm

  53. lightningbuc Says:

    buc realist,

You are correct. Brees was benched in his THIRD season in favor of Doug Flutie, yet these goobers know that Glennon ain’t any good cuz he doesn’t pass the “eye test” – whatever that is.

  54. BamBamBuc Says:

Realist – Brees, in his first year as a starter (2nd year in NFL), had the 12th most yards passing. Record wasn’t great (8-8), but better than what Glennon did. That was also before all the rules changed to benefit the QB. Only 4 QBs topped 4000 yards that year. Last year, 9 surpassed 4000 yards and 2 of those topped 5000. The league is different now and the results should be different too. Glennon was 24th in yardage (admittedly in 13 games), which averaged over a full 16 games would still have put him about 15th (not bad) unless he continued his downward spiral like his last 5 games at which point he probably would have ended with a much worse TD/INT ratio and about 20th in yards.

  55. Destinjohnny Says:

Well look @ it this way mike was solid with the worst o line worst WR core worst tight end situation in the nfl last year. So in saying that logically what can we expect with a top 10 reviving and tight end core and a healthy hamster? Just asking….

  56. BamBamBuc Says:

lightning – Brees had already shown promise his first year as a starter. He was benched games 9-13 of the 2003 season and returned as starter games 14-16. At that point, they could have gotten rid of him entirely, as they drafted Rivers, but they kept Brees and went 11-4 the next season.

But we’re looking at something totally different here. A player sits a year, shows promise the second year, drops off the 3rd year… yeah, you may stick with that guy. But a player has a below average year (other than TD/INT ratio) as a rookie, was not a big investment, how long to you stick with that guy?

  57. BamBamBuc Says:

Destin – “mike was solid” is really in question as I’ve pointed out what a “solid” QB would do under exactly the same circumstances. So, what can we expect with better WRs, TEs, RBs? Doesn’t change Glennon, doesn’t change McCown. Gives them more weapons, sure. But the better QB should start, and I’d argue that’s McCown, not Glennon.

  58. Atlanta Buc Says:

    BAMBAM,

It’s not just what you want for your team, it’s what you can get, with the available draft picks you have. Sadly, our first rounder went for the mercenary Revis that year and our second rounder was burned for another despartely needed CB. In the end, Revis draft cost and salary cap eating $ were probably the last straw that broke the Rockstar’s thin roster back. Comparing to all great QB’s is like comparing to needles in the draft haystack, many great QB’s have come in 1st and then much later rounds. If Glennon turns out to be average to good vs. number one QB flops like Leaf or Russell who where paid multi-millions, I would again say you cannot gripe about Glennon. Hey, we all want things, but as Jagger would say, can we just “get what we need”, like Seattle did with Russell and that great defense. Hey didn’t average Glennon almost upset them up there in Seattle? Hmmmm

  59. Nybucsfan Says:

Ok Glennon was 42 in ypa with 6.2 yards. Passed for 200.6 yards a game. 19 td 9 int’s. 7 fumbles. He was sacked seven times in one game. In the combine he had the lowest velocity on his passes in the last five years 49 mph out of all QB there yea big time cannon. He stinks. I know that the MGM blames it on everyone else but there delusional.

  60. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think the only reason Josh McCown did not retire was because he felt he would get to start.

Therefore, I also believe that Licht and Lovie and Tedford committed to have him start the season off as starter.

I don’t believe, barring injury, that Glennon even has a chance to start game one.

Now, if McCown goes on a huge losing streak or puts together a few bad performances, then I think Glennon will get the nod. That way the keep their word to McCown.

  61. delson Says:

But Joe’s confident no real shot exists for Glennon to start opening day.

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I could also see McCown remaining a starter for most of the games just so the Bucs get a shot at a QB next year.

  63. The_Buc_Realist Says:

McCown will play until the O-line starts to play well together. Everyone know that you don’t risk the “Future” until the time right!!!

  64. Destinjohnny Says:

So Bam Bam look the guy isn’t the second coming of Marino but look at Josh last year, after 13 years the light goes on why you ask…… Look at his supporting cast.
Look at ole number 8 Archie Hell I would take him over Peyton but, look at his supporting cast for all those years with NOLA. This is basic basic stuff you are smart you should know that you will never perform up to your potential with zero weapons except for jackson and a crap o line and a 3rd string back.

  65. delson Says:

Joe speaks in loophole. I wonder what he will say IF glennon starts the season.

  66. ecspider33 Says:

Glennon, Josh, Mike, who ever it is let’s just win games and be a contender

  67. Captain Stagger Says:

Never said McCown shouldn’t start, just said that trying to evaluate Glennon based soley on a year under a coach who

    1. Doesn’t believe in adjustments
    2. Does believe that QB’s don’t need coaching
    3. Is on record saying he would rather take a sack then force the ball
    4. Is on record saying “don’t try and make a play, just do your job”
    5. Stopped a well oiled no huddle because “that’s not who we are”

Throw in Sully’s offense that took Eli 3 years to learn, supporting cast, MRSA circus, zero Veteran presence other than Dan-O and it’s a recipe for disaster for a rookie 3rd round pick.

But why don’t you start typing in all caps Bam Bam….then we might hear you.

Not a mobber, just a guy that is kind of happy to let Glennon sit, learn, and see how he progresses under Tedford. Quite telling how Lovie’s tone has changed since the mini camp. Actions speak louder than words, and Johnny isn’t a Buc.

  68. BamBamBuc Says:

Atlanta – exactly, therefore we arrive at the signing of McCown. A temporary solution until the real answer is found.

  69. Hawk Says:

    StPeteBucsFan Says:

“McCown will start because all things are not equal. Glennon simply has too much to overcome.”

I don’t believe it’s so much what Glennon has to “overcome”, as it is the advantages of starting McCown. You make that point in your next sentence.

“Lovie is comfortable with McCown. He’s seen McCown do exactly what he want’s the Bucs to do…the “Dunkaneers”.”

    I agree 100%..

“There is no downside to starting with McCown.

Again, I agree 100%. *I* believe Glennon has the potential to become the QB that Buc fans will speak fondly of for next 10-20 years, but if the season were to start tomorrow, McCown is the better choice to start.

  70. BamBamBuc Says:

Captain – I’m glad Johnny isn’t a Buc. Boom or bust in my eyes. I’m also fine with Glennon sitting, learning for a year. I do hope we address the position next year. Admittedly having only 13 pro games plus college to go on like anyone else, I haven’t seen anything yet at either level that says Glennon will ever be the solution, rather an average, adequate fill in until we find the answer.

  71. Patrick Says:

Glennon will have a much better career than McCown has had.

  72. Buc1987 Says:

“For Joe, Glennon simply didn’t show enough – performance or potential – to call him “quarterback of the future.”

Which explains why you’re not a coach in the NFL, nor is your name Lovie Smith.

  73. Warthog Says:

Joe frequently points out that Lovie went back on his word when it comes to instances like shipping out Mike Williams and Revis. This is brought up as evidence that Glennon isn’t really the qb of the future despite what Lovie said. But at the same time when Lovie anointed McCown as starter, that is taken at face value. Seems inconsistent Joe.

  74. Harry Says:

“…The Josh McCown Deniers, aka veteran members of the Mike Glennon Mob who spend their nights knitting “19 and 9″ banners…”

LMAO! Please Joe, quit picking on “The Cannon”

  75. Kevin Says:

Well I think it’ safe to assume one thing at this point….no matter who starts this season, that we should have an opportunity to see plenty starts from both of these Qb’s in the next two seasons of football. Josh first Glennon second. Is it pre-season yet???!!!!!!!!

  76. Bucfever40 Says:

Joe, I honestly think you’d rather see the Bucs offense run out of the Wildcat formation (exclusively) than to see IF Mike Glennon can do the job. I’m hoping your distaste in Glennon is a way to strum up lively conversations/debates for your fine website, because otherwise, I’ve not ever seen any kind of media here (besides maybe Steve Duemig) who’s opinion on a player is so etched in stone without even the benefit of a SECOND season, under a NEW regime, with a BIG player overhaul and infusion of new talent. In your defense, I know that you’ve stated that if MG does overcome YOUR unattainable odds, that you’d root for him, I’m just hoping that you don’t wish him any failure for the sake of……well you know what I’m saying.

  77. Joe Says:

Joe, I honestly think you’d rather see the Bucs offense run out of the Wildcat formation (exclusively) than to see IF Mike Glennon can do the job.

Ha! And Joe thinks many Bucs fans believe the Bucs could have Mason Foster play quarterback because they believe this nonsense that defense alone can win a title. The Bucs themselves in 1999 proved what a false premise that is.

And before someone brings up the tired reach of Seattle, Russell Wilson is far better than any quarterback on the Bucs roster.

If Glennon starts, more power to Glennon. Joe will root for him as he does any Bucs quarterback. Joe just doesn’t see him doing anything. And if any team has to surround a quarterback with all stars to try to hide him and carry him, doesn’t that speak volumes?

Always remember and never forget that the Bucs won a Super Bowl with a Pro Bowl quarterback. No need to believe Joe if you don’t want to, you can look it up.

No, Joe is not trying to run Glennon out of town. That’s not how Joe rolls.

  78. tickrdr Says:

Completely off topic but helps to make my point.

Riding home from work today, I passed a bunch of first-graders playing tackle football. So naturally, I challenged them to a game. I’ll tell you those little bastards couldn’t tackle me(5’11”, 230 lbs), and I won easily.

My point is: Throw out ALL of the other excuses, throw out rookie status, throw out poor coaching, throw out 3rd string teammates, throw out poor play selection etc., etc.

What matters most is the OPPONENT you play, and how good they are at the time you play them! Many blogs list the strength of schedule based on what the opponent’s record was in the preceding season, which is ludicrous, since teams change dramatically from season to season due to injuries, coaching changes, new players, players maturing, and even luck. For example, the Atlanta Falcons were 13-3 in year 2012, and would have been predicted to be a formidable opponent in 2013, but yet they went 4-12. Even the lowly Bucs led by MG8 were able to beat them once.

A much better estimate of the strength of schedule is to look at the opponent’s record for the year in which you played them, NOT the year before. So let’s look at BamBamBuc’s Mr. Luck. In 2012, the Indianapolis Colts faced teams with an aggregate record of 113-133 (for the year 2012), which was tied for 28th EASIEST in the whole league.

The MG8 led Bucs played the 17th ranked schedule based on the 2012 records of their opponents. But in the actual 2013 season the Bucs beat the 4-12 Falcons once; beat the 6-10 Bills; beat the 7-9 Lions, and beat the 8-8 Dolphins. They also played and lost the remainder to the 4-12 Falcons, 7-9 Rams, the 8-8 Jets, the 10-6 Eagles, the 10-6 Cardinals, the 11-5 Saints twice, the 12-4 49er’s, the 12-4 Patriots, and the 12-4 Panthers twice, as well as once to the 13-3 Seahawks. Several of those teams made the playoffs, and/or were ranked in the top ten defensively. Their aggregate record was 147-109, which is THE Toughest schedule of all the teams in the NFL for 2013!

My last point concerns Josh McCown, and his 13 TDs vs. only 1 INT. Two of those five games were against Minn and Dall, where he threw for 6TDs and 0 INTSthe 31st and 32nd ranked defenses overall for 2013.

  79. MadMax Says:

I love this…I just LOL at the anti MG’s.

Whether its butt hurt for being such a Freeman fan while watching him get supplanted by MG, or butt hurt over the fact we DID NOT DRAFT A QB…The kid has 1 year under his belt…and OF COURSE he’s no Andrew Luck (my god what a crap comparison).

Apparently the L&L regime see what some of us fans see, and you can point to stats and compare all you want…bottom line is he’s had 1 year. Im willing to give the kid a chance and obviously so is the L&L regime!

  80. Barry Says:

MG8 is a better QB then McCown. Period. Odds are he’ll be opening day starter unless Smith tries to save face. That being said; MG8 is the future so let’s do this thing.

  81. Vico Says:

It is amazing how people truly believe in Glennon. What do they see? Is it the game @Seattle? because he couldn’t handle the pressure when a few trick plays and good defense gave the team a considerable lead at half time. You have to say that was the best Buc football last year, against the team that later on would win the SB. Good (not great) first half for Glennon, but that’s it. Against Miami? Defense won that one. Glennon was 11/21 139 yards. Atlanta? Arguably his best game, but again just one good half, second half without Rainey and defense would have been another meltdown. Buffalo? All Rainey, Glennon was 9/25 90 yards. Are you for real people? And I’m only talking about the games we actually won (and one that should have been won), when all those in the “sucky Oline” blamed of Glennon’s lack of opportunity actually performed and let others like Rainey and James shine.

Glennon is a nice fella, hard-working kid, decent potential no doubt about that, but he’s no franchise QB. Please face reality, L&L are sold on McCown, I believe they tried to get quality picks for Glennon, but were not interested in the 5th rd picks offered by other teams. So Glennon stays. They hadn’t even worked with Glennon when McCown was named starter. Why does this need to be discussed over and over again? Half of his TD throws to Vjax, are short on a deep route and Vjax breaks route to come back for them. To use the subject of Mike Glennon’s status at QB is boring, unless it’s as QB of another team in exchange of good players or good future picks, otherwise please stop.

  82. Kingpin Says:

No surprise !!!! Lets just win some games.

  83. Vico Says:

    @Warthog

The big difference is that McCown was brought in, that means money destined to his bank account, and quite some, which is a solidification of commitment by the organisation. While Glennon, not hired by L&L, could increase his value in other team’s eyes if he is being sold like that: a QB project that a Pro franchise is “willing to rely on for the future”, that’s just words, not commitment. Commitment would be to increase MG’s salary, which I believe won’t happen. At all. Ever. SO his words about McCown should not be equally interpreted to his words about Glennon. Ever played poker?

  84. Vico Says:

    @Buc1987

Man, if Lovie was actually running JoeBucsfan.com that would be to mother of all smokescreens.

  85. stanglassman Says:

Once again BamBam great job, I always enjoy reading you thoughtful points. Joe should consider having you write some articles for JBF.
Every time you hear someone say Glennon didn’t play well because of A B or C you and insert Freeman’s name too. Freeman was playing pretty well until Schanio got here what a coincidence. I know it’s all in the past but I think more people should realize they can’t have it both ways.

  86. BamBamBuc Says:

And if any team has to surround a quarterback with all stars to try to hide him and carry him, doesn’t that speak volumes?”

    Bravo, Joe. Bravo.

  87. BamBamBuc Says:

Vico, well said. Anyone that can tell me which games Glennon took over and won, as opposed to “not losing”, be my guest.

tikrdr, 6 TDs and no INTs sounds like a QB that actually went out and won two games, not a QB that sat on his heels and let the team win while he watched and played not to lose.

Don’t get me wrong. A win is a win, and I’ll take any type of win. But sometimes you need a QB that can go out and win it for you. Glennon never did, and that is what many of us saw.

  88. BamBamBuc Says:

Stanglassman, that would be too controversial. I’m at least as, if not more, opinionated than Joe!

  89. SteveK Says:

    Stanglassman and BamBamBuc,

Glennon deserves his spot on the rosters, backup. Glennon earned his seat at the big boy table last year.

    No excuses.

Glennon could develop into our future. Let big bird’s play donte talking.

Kid is no Andrew luck, but he’s better than John Football, Teddy Small Hands and any other QB in this year’s draft. Maybe Bortles, but we never had the chance to pass on him.

Several knowledgable fans continue to doubt Glennon, and think he will never become a franchise QB.

Why can’t he get better, mentally, physically and as a leader? McCown is an awesome mentor, and guy to have in there for a couple of years.

Keep doubting Glennon, that’s fine, he may surprise you.

  90. BamBamBuc Says:

Yes, SteveK, he could and he may. So far, he hasn’t. I haven’t seen anything that says he “deserves” anything. Want to start at QB in the NFL? Go out and win some games for your team. Don’t ride the coattails of your defense or run game, go win it yourself, will your team to victory. He simply allowed 2nd and 3rd string RBs to take charge and win. He let a defense that couldn’t get to the QB take charge, get turnovers, and win.

As of now, Glennon is an overpriced cheerleader. Heck, theyre only making $100/game. Grab some pompoms big bird.

  91. Chef Paul Says:

So giving a QB weapons means they are hiding him? Come on! That’s how it works. Tommy boy is the only QB that can get away with no weapons. Even Peyton was surrounded by weapons almost his entire career.

  92. stanglassman Says:

I like Glennon and never said anything negative about him. I’m looking forward to seeing how he preforms in the preseason. I don’t share the opinion that the coaching staff came in watched Glennon practice a few times and decided they no longer needed to draft a QB. I think they would have drafted Carr in the 3rd but the plan derailed by the Raiders.

  93. MadMax Says:

@bamabam, are u butt hurt over losing Dom and Schiano too?

  94. Bogiedr Says:

Glennon is a back up at best. Is the Glennon Mob the same idiots that wanted Jerry Goldstein starting for the Bucs? Mike Glennon is A remake of Jerry Goldstein … Go look at the video!

  95. tickrdr Says:

    @BamBamBuc:
You’re right McCown did win those two games against the two worst defensive teams in the nfl.

Andrew Luck also played well as a rookie, against the 28th easiest schedule for 2012.

MG8 played against the toughest schedule in the league last year. Can’t wait for the season to start to see how it all plays out.

No, Joe is not trying to run Glennon out of town. That’s not how Joe rolls.
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………

Joe ; you said, you would root for Glennon on the days he played and not during the week . Are you now saying something else? No, of course, Joe roots for every Buccaneer when the whistle blows. –Joe

Joe ; you say, If Glennon starts, more power to Glennon. Why didn’t you do this when you had the chance last season when you and your buddy Steve Duemig were beating him up from the sidelines{it’s in the archives, both print and audio} Sir, Joe always wants the Bucs to win, roots for the team. Critique of the man’s play has nothing to do with that. Joe’s supported players who many fans thought were garbage. (See Blount) –Joe

Joe ; you say, Joe is not trying to run Glennon out of town. That’s not how Joe rolls. If this is the case, why continued call fore Glennon to be traded? why ridicule him with the “cannon” manicure? Joe never called for Glennon to be traded. However, Joe wrote numerous times that getting a third-round pick for Glennon would be a good thing, in the best interest of the Bucs. Not every player is a fit. Joe would have thought an Adrian Clayborn trade for, say, a fourth-round pick, would have been a wise play, too. Joe’s not sure what you’re talking about with the “manicure” but to Joe’s knowledge, Joe is only one to report on the general manager claiming Glennon has a “cannon.” THat’s newsworthy and interesting.–Joe

    Just wondering!

  99. mark2001 Says:

StPeteBucs Fan…agree 100%. Why put the pressure on Glennon when McCown should be able to get the job done? Keep the fire burning in Glennon and make Glennon beat him out…if he can…then he has earned it.

  100. MadMax Says:

Hey Vico, tell that to Bogiedr and a few others around here. Trust me, I share your sentiments in that respect, but sometimes you must stoop to their level 😉 especially while having fun.

  101. The_Buc_Realist Says:

McCown will play until the O-line comes together, then the future will take over. You do not risk the “Cannon” will the O-line is learning to play together.

  102. BamBamBuc Says:

MadMax – I must have said something to offend you. If I did, I won’t apologize, as that is my opinion being stated and I can’t control how others will take it. However, I never have, and never will “stoop” to the level of others including name-calling. I haven’t said any fan here is “too stupid” or a “mental midget”. I have only asked that people look a little closer at things they may not have seen, whether by choice or because they simply missed it.

Some people see only what they choose to see. If a fan really disliked Freeman, they may choose to only see the positives in Glennon, as he has to be better than Freeman or they may be wrong about Freeman. Some choose to only see the negative in Glennon because they thought Freeman was better and there is no way a 3rd round pick could be better than Freeman.

I, personally, don’t care about draft pick status. That’s why I don’t care if Luck is the #1 overall pick or the 254th pick in the draft and will compare them all equally, because once they are on the field, draft pick status goes out the window and production is all that matters. If a 3rd round pick performs at a lesser level than the #1 overall pick, then that 3rd round pick is not as good as the 1st round pick and we should look, at some point, to upgrade. If we find a 3rd round pick that plays as well or better than the 1st round pick, we got a great value and great player. We must compare Glennon to ALL players playing the position, not just those drafted at his pick or lower. That skews vision to the positive falsely. We also can’t pick and choose specific players selected ahead that have failed. In my view, those players were a poor value for their teams (all the better for the Bucs that other teams fail ahead of them).

So, with open mind, view Glennon against ALL QBs in the NFL. View Glennon as a project that started in college and continues to the NFL as a starting QB. What improvements has he made? What did he struggle with before that he is better at now? Are we seeing progress?

Let’s take a scouting report example. From NFL.com: Tends to retreat instead of stepping up to deliver in the face of pressure.

Did he improve upon that last year? Or did he still tend to fade or retreat?

I encourage fans to head to draft breakdown and view the videos of his college games. The watch his pro games again. Tell what you see different. What you see is better?

  103. delson Says:
