Jeff Tedford’s Offense: “Pro Style”

Bucs rookie RB Brendan Bigelow, who played for offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford at Cal, talked about the strong connection the two have.

Later today, we likely will learn which undrafted rookie free agents and tryout players will stick around for OTAs beginning this week, and likely return for training camp in July. Sadly, the odds are against a lot of the tryouts.

The Bucs have 90 on their roster now, the training camp maximum. So maybe a few tryout guys return to replace undrafted free agents and become camp meat. Yeah, it sounds crude, but that’s about the extent of it.

One guy Joe has a hunch will stick is Brendan Bigelow, a running back from Cal, who joined the Bucs as an undrafted free agent. You see, he was recruited and played for Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford when he was at Cal.

During the rookie minicamp, Begelow told Joe that Tedford’s offense was like riding a bike after not climbing on said bike for a couple of years.

“He has some stuff, man,” Bigelow said. During drills, “It was like, it is starting to come back to me. Flashbacks from my time at Cal. I’m pretty excited. There is a lot of the stuff I’m trying to get familar with but as far as the offense, it is coming back. It is pretty cool.”

Of course, Joe asked Bigelow to let Joe take a sneak peak behind the curtain of Tedford’s offense, but he wasn’t biting, other than to say it is a “pro style” offense, which is what attracted him to Tedford when he was in high school.

“I have always been a fan of the pro style offense,” Bigelow said. “Me and Tedford had a connection already. The first time we talked we had a connection. I haven’t connected with a coach like that before. Instantly, I knew [Cal] was my place.”

So close are the two, that it was Tedford who called Bigelow after the draft to recruit him to the Bucs with a simple sentence.

“Come join me one more time.”

    Another running back?

  2. brandonbucfan Says:

Didn’t Tedford have any OL’s at Cal?

  3. Josh P Says:

Rainy or James is going to be the odd man out when you look at the roster week one. Love James and Rainy did a good job filling in. But neither one is Tedfords guy. He they drafted Sims for a reason.

  4. Lou. Says:

Is Joe –or the commentariat — ready top mock the camp survivor pool?

  5. Architek Says:

RB corps is gonna be steep and competitive! Looks like a run heavy offense with wrinkles for passing!

This is gonna be a journey.

I mentioned Bigelow on JBF when he was the 13th UDFA signed before the mini-camp as one to keep an eye on. Tedford likes big backs – really fast big backs. Bigelow is a former California track star aka speed merchant and he can also catch. I don’t see him moving anybody on the roster, but some of these guys are going to be warehoused on the PS.

Contrary to what many of us think, maybe Tedford doesn’t like our group of RBs as much as we do… We should stop acting like we know what is what in this offense.

  8. Jim Walker Says:

Do the buccaneers realize that a right guard in needed in the NFL?

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Jim Walker…probably not, maybe you better call someone at One Buc.

-That’s funny, man! Thanks for a laugh this morning!

The real question is: WHAT TYPE of O-Linemen did he have at Cal? The answer to that question likely will tell us much about the Bucs new offense.

  11. Brandon Says:

The fact is that the Bucs HAVE to have another RB. The few that we have aren’t enough for TC and preseason.

  12. b.Bruce Says:

he’s here to teach the other running backs the offense.plain and simple.

  13. John McKillop Says:

@couchfan, you hit the nail on the head. None of us knows what Tedfords offense will look like, therefore none of us knows for sure what he values in his running backs. Personally I like James a lot, Tedford might not feel he is a fit for what he wants to do, I’m ok with that. Get guys who are a fit for the system he wants to run, can’t pound a round peg in a square hole.

  14. OB Says:

Joe can a big fast RB that can catch be made into a slot receiver either full time or part time?

  15. Kevin Says:

I am going to be PISSED if they get rid of James. Rainey better be on his way out cuz the dude just didn’t have it. Sorry Rainey but it’s the truth.

  16. PRBucFan Says:

Rainey and James will remain Bucs unless a trade offer occurs they cannot refuse.

Mike can be a main back in this league.

  17. Matt B Says:

I love this kid Bigelow. He is a homerun hitter. Every time I watched Cal play I was puzzled as to why they didn’t give him the ball on every down. It seemed like he made a big play on every touch he got. Too bad for him that our backfield is so crowded already.

  18. Vico Says:

Kid’s equilibrium and speed are amazing. Don’t know if that’s enough to make the roster though.
