Sims, Seferian-Jenkins Will Learn To Be Special

May 17th, 2014

Bucs rookie RB Charles Sims

Joe wrote earlier this week about how the Bucs’ special teams have more question marks than The Riddler’s house.

So what about the Bucs’ new rookies? Do they have special teams experience?

Rookie running back Charles Sims told Joe he worked with the punt team yesterday for the first time in his career. “Just going with the flow, man,” Sims said of his desire to help the Bucs in any way.

Sims has experience as a gunner and safety on kickoff teams in college, but didn’t play defense or special teams in high school.

Gargantuan tight end and second-round pick Austin Seferian-Jenkins only worked in college on field goal block teams. “That’s about it,” he told Joe yesterday. “But I’m down to play special teams.

Of course,  a top pick and potential super star like Mike Evans wont be put at risk on special teams.

Joe will learn more about the experience of the Bucs’ fifth-round offensive linemen and sixth-round pick Robert Herron at rookie minicamp, though Herron struggled mightily to catch punts in the wind at One Buc Palace yesterday.

It’ll be interesting to see where the Bucs’ special teams pieces emerge. Joe could see a scenario in which the Bucs hold on to a fourth tight end like Tom Crabtree, who’s versatile and is a standout special teamer. His shot could be enhanced by unknown timetable for the healing of Seferian-Jenkins’ surgically repaired foot fracture.

Joe how big are mike and austin? Are they as tall as there advertised size?

  2. Brandon Says:

Destin- They were officially measured at 6’4 7/8 and 6’5″1/2 at the Combine, it is what it is.

  3. The don Says:

They are tall . Like Mutumbo

  4. Destinjohnny Says:

I hear that on the measurement thanks but was wondering In person if they were as physically imposing as advertised

    Brandon,

The Bucs have another tall WR that isn’t being talked about now, but has a reasonably good chance of making the team and that is Tommy Streeter from the U. At the 2012 combine, he measured 6-4 and 7/8 and clocked a 4.37/40 (official 4.40). They’ve got lots of length and speed!

As I said, hope L&L with all their purging and changing of the roster have thought about special teams. Hester should have been a lock to come here. and who right now now would you have returning KOs and punts much less the rest of the team? Keep an unnecessary 4th TE Crabtree just for ST’s. We’ve made some great moves but ST’s are still 1/3 of the game.

  7. Ur Mom Says:

Destin- much bigger in person, like 7′ tall. I think they grew since the combine.

  8. biff barker Says:

Never have seen Streeter play but he does have the measurables!
