Bucs Have New Front Office Man

May 14th, 2014
New Bucs front office type Jon Robinson.

New Bucs front office type Jon Robinson.

Now that the draft is over, suits in the football offices of NFL teams begin sweating, especialy when there is a new sheriff in town. In other words, a general manager often likes to bring in his guys.

That is happening now with the Bucs. Today it was learned by Mike Reiss and Field Yates, both of ESPNBoston, that current Patriots director of college scouting Jon Robinson is leaving the team to join forces with Bucs general manager Jason Licht as his player personnel director.

And no, Robinson did not coach the Rams and USC in a previous life. Different guy.

Robinson essentially fills the void left when Dennis Hickey left the Bucs to take the general manager gig with the Dolphins. Per Reiss and Yates, it was Licht who played a big role in the Patriots hiring of Robinson when he was a lowly scout, and Robinson rose through the ranks within Bill Belicheat’s organization.

Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano always wanted to emulate his hero, Belicheat. Seems the Bucs, with Licht and Robinson both disciples of Belicheat, are moving in that direction.

    “With Robinson headed to Tampa Bay, Buccaneers director of college scouting Eric Stokes will head to Miami as an assistant to GM Dennis Hickey, according to sources. Hickey and Stokes previously worked together in Tampa Bay.”

    Had hopes for Stokes-O well

    The head of Scouting and his scouts to me are key in SPORT muchless football. Hate to lose Eric Stokes. I hope Robinson and Light bring in a strong staff. I think we were lucky in our draft (still remains to be seen) that Tedford and Lovie had the year off to watch football 24/7 and have a good idea of who they wanted. That won’t be true next year as they will have to rely heavily on their scouting system. Let’s hope the new scouts are on the same page with what L&L as well as Tedford and Frazier are looking for.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    How tall is he & what is his wingspan?….

  7. Buc1987 Says:

    TBBF..lol if he’s under 6’4 we don’t need him.

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Joe

    I think that’s a pick of Personnel Director Nick Caserio.

    Set Down w/ Jon Robinson

    -Robinson spent the last 12 seasons in the Patriots scouting department, the last five as the team’s director of college scouting.

  11. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    Well if Stokes was the sole reason the Bucs drafted so well in 2012 & 2013 as a couple people here will argue until the beer is warm and flat, then I guess Miami will have some awesome drafts next year.

  12. INDYbucsfan Says:

    Hopefully we can emulate they’re 10+years of playoffs too

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 87…

    You’re too young to be retired….you’re on here day & night…you get laid off?….independently wealth?….home sick?…online at work?…..
    or….TBBF…”none of your business”

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @INDYbucsfan

    Hopefully

  15. Mort Says:

    yeah the equally big news is Eric Stokes is going to Miami for Dennis Hickey. That’s a huge loss as drafting with him has been very good. He was very highly regarded when we snatched him away from Seattle a few years ago.

  16. tiny tim Says:

    Stokes will be a GM real soon. He has an eye for talent. Just look at his success in Seattle. Now he is the assistant to Hickey. The next step is GM.

  17. Destinjohnny Says:

    stokes was sharp

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Yeah-Stokes is definitely on the way up-Robinson on the other hand, sounds like a solid dude though-We can only hope for the best

  19. Phillip Says:

    @Toes

    I know your comment was directed towards me.. Fact is MULTIPLE people go into drafting a person not just your strange love affair for Schiano… But let me guess all of our free agents success was due to Schiano as well?

    I for one wish we could have kept Stokes but he will be a GM soon enough

    @Phillip

    Thank you for the Link

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I could care less that they guy left. He did not help much with this draft if at all, and according to every Bucs fan on the planet, we had a great draft.

    I can’t argue with that claim.

    Jason Licht lost me with his trades and spending, but he swayed me a little with this draft (excusing the lack of a QB pick).

    Although, I do question his wisdom of passing on several good QBs when he could have taken one and traded Glennon for “multiple picks.” Still, everything else about this draft seemed good.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Of course, we’ll have to wait a couple years to see if he really knows talent.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

    I don’t care who they hire or who they fire. The last regime was so far off that it doesn’t matter to me. I just want to win. They obviously want to win and are making many moves to try and do that. The end justifies the means, but if results don’t come then someone else will take over. At least Lovie has garnered much respect around the league and hopefully the zebras will finally stop picking on the Bucs. All I ask is for a level playing field and maximum sustained effort from the players.

  24. CocoaBchBuc Says:

    I am with BigMacAttack on his post. Lovie will continue to upgrade, as he should. If the zebras were consistent on their calls with every team then that is acceptable. I am a Buc’s homer, but spent too much time in sports bars with friends who were rooting for their team not the Bucs. Tired of hearing them say we got screwed on a call and then laugh about it…

  25. RastaMon Says:

    dead men walking…must have sucked pre draft not cc on all the memo’s or privy to all that they “understood” they were not being included in…

  26. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ Phillip

    At least I was kind enough to not call you out by name 🙂

    Never said Stokes didn’t play a part in the good Bucs drafts in 2012&2013, I just find it comical that you want to try to give the guy full credit when he doesn’t make any final decisions

    Doesn’t matter at this point, hopefully this year’s Bucs draft is as good as the two prior ones so the team can rebound from the nightmare that with 2 or 3 exceptions was the Rah and Dom show

  27. Colin Says:

    Thats a pic of Nick Casario.
