McCown Says Doug Martin Is Embracing RhythmMay 13th, 2014
The Bucs just drafted a running back with incredible hands in the third round of the NFL Draft, Charles Sims out of West Virginia.
And moments ago Josh McCown just raved about how Doug Martin is “really embracing” the fine points of catching passes out of the backfield. Hmmm.
Not that Joe thinks Martin wasn’t committed to his craft before the draft, but the timing of this sure felt like a fire has been lit under Martin.
Joe asked McCown about what he’ll do to accelerate the chemistry with him and four guys just drafted to catch passes this season. McCown said it’s all about time and devotion to the details, and then he brought up the Muscle Hamster.
“Doug Martin and I were just talking about that, man. He is really embracing the understanding of rhythm of the passing game and the checkdowns and how vital that is to a quarterback. And so that’s the key,” McCown said. “The young guys, we’ve added them, and obviously we hope they help us and all those things. But we’re a new offense in general. So it’s not like we have to get those ready; we have to get us all ready. Because there’s a lot of time that we need to spend together and understanding that we got to grow to be where we want to be and reach some of the goals that we have.”
McCown went on to remind reporters that the Bears were able make a fast jump in offense last season (up to the No. 2-ranked offense in the NFL.) The only magic answer is “time, time, time,” McCown said.
“It was time spent. That’s what it was [in Chicago,] McCown said. “You have to study. You have to be together. You have to work together. And if you’re willing to do that, I think that’s the best way to accelerate that curve.”
Look for the McCown-led covert practice sessions to continue.
