Alterraun Verner: No. 93

The stat nerds are quite high on Bucs CB Alterraun Verner.

Stat nerds are quite high on Bucs CB Alterraun Verner.

From now until the end of July, all sorts of NFL media will roll out filler material to pass the time until training camps open, in between news from various team minicamps and OTAs.

So, get ready for a whole bunch of episodes of Top-100s, America’s Game, A Football Life and the 8,653rd rerun of “Top 10” on NFL Network, not to mention the dozens of daily assaults from that damned ice cream company and its friggin’ waffle cones. Joe is so absolutely sick of those commercials, you don’t know how badly he wants to drop a No. 2 in that woman’s waffle cone.

The spreadsheeters over at Pro Football Focus are busy counting down, too. Worn down from annoying Bill Belicheat and studying for the draft, the stat nerds have decided to take a page from NFL Network and have a Top-100 players list of their own. In its first installment, Khaled Elsayed has Bucs cornerback Alterraun Verner ranked No. 93.

93. Alterraun Verner, CB, Tennessee Titans

Verner was on his way to a higher ranking with some excellent work in his first 10 games of the year that saw him earn just the one negative grade (and a -0.3 at that). But he fell off some as the season closed, unable to make the kind of plays that saw him catch the eye of everyone initially. Still, all told, it was a fine year for Verner who allowed just one reception for every 15 snaps in coverage (fifth-best in the league).

Yes, Joe knows Verner plays in Tampa now. The spreadsheeters seem to be too busy trying to fix their corrupted Excel programs to notice.

Verner may have been a steal for the Bucs and good evidence of the selling power of coach Lovie Smith. Joe has no issue with Verner in any way shape or form. But whenever Joe sees him or reads his name, he remembers Darrelle Revis.

No, Joe can’t get over Revis’ loss easily, sorry.

We won’t miss Revis much…Sure he is probably better than Verner…but I think our D will be better front to back that the loss will be minimal.

Joe, sick of commercials, oh ye of candy crush fame, sick of commercials. I’m going to get a waffle cone and ponder the thought! lol

Joe’s sick of the candy crush, too, though that’s far less of an issue now. But those aren’t commercials, since Joe doesn’t make money off that glitch. –Joe

I too still pine over the loss of Revis and cannot fathom a way the team could have found a way to absorb his contract even with the FA and rookie signings, but it’s spilled milk at this point. Obviously L&L have a plan and are sticking to it.

    Joe,

My feeble attempt at humor. I”m all over the Interwebs as you call them on a daily basis. My opinion, you have the most sucessful interactive sports blog (your online participation) in the country. Enjoy your success! Commercials (though some are annoying) are the marrow of all media. They pay the bills – necessary inconvenience! Goes without saying. Have a good day!

Joe I feel the same thing when I hear Verner. I just tell myself he’s the best in zone this past FA and will thrive in Lovie smith….I do that while eating doughnuts and crying….not really but it is sad to lose Revis :'(

I, too, am of the butthurt. I was so pissed I couldn’t even think of Lovie Smith in a positive, homer light. But then I remembered they don’t cut my checks (sadly) and I have nothing to do with the team (also sadly) so I was left to wallow in my sadness til the FA haul started to pour in.

I feel really good about Alterraun though, all things considered. Not a Revis but maybe he’s the Revis of zone coverage for our sake.

The good thing about adding Verner is #1 he’s a top 5 corner in this league, #2 he’s just 25 and hasn’t even hit his prime yet, and #3 we gott’em for 1/2 the price of Revis…

For the record, I never wanted Revis here; with the 1st round pick we used to get a banged up, overrated, greedy Darrell Revis we could have selected Lotulelei or Richardson and still got Banks in the 2nd rd…That was a bad trade for this franchise all the way round…

As for Revis personally, I lost respect for him as a gamer…Imo he left the NFC South because he was scared…He saw 1st hand that There’s real QB’s in this divison…Trust and Believe that Revis would much rather take less money to face E.J. Manuel, Gino Smith, and Matt Tanahill twice a year than face Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Cam Newton twice a year…

Hmmmm. Never thought of it that way.
