Bucs Tied For Sixth-Best Draft

May 12th, 2014
Now it's Tedford time

Now it’s Tedford time

Legions of BSPN lovers and Bucs fans care what helmet hair draft guru Mel Kiper has to say in his ever-changing mock drafts.

But do they care what Kiper thinks post-draft? Apparently they do.

Kiper has brought out his professorial grading pen and has tagged each team’s draft marks behind a paywall at BSPN.com. Kiper likes what the Bucs did, but he says it only works if the Bucs’ questionable quarterbacks come through.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: B+

Top needs: WR, OG, OLB, DE

Needs: B+
Value: B+

Summary: How we feel about this draft in a year or two has a lot to do with a pair of players who weren’t in the draft, and yet were the focus of it.Josh McCown is the presumed starter at QB, and Mike Glennonmay still have a future in Tampa. And now with Mike Evans and Austin Seferian-Jenkins in town to go with Vincent Jackson, the Bucs have a bunch of small forwards at wide receiver. But if McCown doesn’t cut it, and Glennon isn’t the answer, does Johnny Manziel succeed in Cleveland and leave this front office wondering? I don’t dislike the Evans pick at all, and ASJ’s slot at No. 38 is pretty much in line with where I have him ranked. It’s just now on the starting QB to make sure this works.Charles Sims is a solid depth addition in the backfield, and Kadeem Edwards could be a needed guard solution. Robert Herron offers really good speed late in the draft. Lovie Smith and the Bucs clearly feel good about the defense. They effectively targeted the offense, and didn’t make mistakes on value. Now it’s up to a QB to live up.

Hey, those B+ grades put the Bucs tied for sixth best in the NFL among Kiper’s grades! Wow!

If Joe were forced under threat of torture to give the Bucs a draft grade – which is almost ludicrous even a full year after the draft – Joe would probably give the Bucs a C+. Tampa Bay surely didn’t blow Joe’s doors off, and Joe believes the team should have addressed the quarterback position and drafted higher at offensive line.

Now it falls on Jeff Tedord. Is he up to the task of crafting a dynamic offense with just about zero familiarity among his players and serious potential holes on his offensive line?

Couldn’t agree more. I disagree with you “grade” but what the hell do any of is know. We have to see them play first lol.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Considering other teams had higher/more picks….I think we did pretty well.
Of course, if you think we should have drafted a QB….any QB and in particular if you expressed that you were quite sure that would happen…then you would be thoroughly disappointed.
    Too bad…..so sad!!!

I have been a Buc fan from the beginning and I haven’t been this excited since the Leroy Selmon pick. All offense….
For years I have been watching “run, run, pass, punt”…..maybe this year will be different!!!

  3. Gusjackson Says:

    Is=us damn auto correct

  4. Buc1987 Says:

That’s what I say as far as grading goes. Who knows how any of these players will turn out? That’s when you grade that draft. For the time being though. I’m giving them just a straight B. O-line did need to be addressed earlier rather than later, that’s why I moved down to B from B+.

  5. Orca Says:

The thought of torturing Joe is intriguing. He’s tortured us for months with all the Johnny Football crap.

  6. gatrbuc17 Says:

    Amen Orca

  7. Josh P Says:

Anybody ever think maybe they didn’t really get wowed by any of these QB’s. Maybe they’re looking at next year’s class and see their franchise QB there. Draft grades are ridiculous. Clearly teams were not that impressed Johnny Cleveland not even the browns otherwise they would have drafted him with their first pick.

  8. robert7 Says:

I give them a B based on their limited # of picks and would have liked another lineman in the 7th to develop. a good OL/DL/DE/LB in the 4th would have made it higher, but we’ll see what they do before the season kickoff.

  9. William Says:

It really falls on the players to perform and Tedford to create a game plan that support their skills. We have a coaching staff this year. It should be interesting to see our QBs in pre-season. As a fan, I have hope in our coaching staff to get the most out of our QBs.

  10. Bucs fan in NC Says:

This just further proves Kiper is clueless! No way this draft was a B+

  11. Juan Says:

HAHA, Johnny Crap went to Cleveland and he may not even be the starter, according to the Owner. Even if he does starts he will be without his top 2 targets. I see a Gabber 2.0 – We all know Evans made Johnny, and I am super happy he is not here. Next year will be a really good time for us to draft a QB, if we are going to draft one since many teams have drafted one this year and wont have a need next year. Please people, please do not start chanting for Winston.
Overall I think we did good with bringing size, compensation for “speed”. I do agree we should’ve drafted at least a G in the 3rd but hey they are the coaches, not us.

  12. Leonard Scarnesi Says:

Why would anyone even care what Joe’s grade is. I am amazed that Joe gives so many opinions when he obviously has no credentials to make his opinions any more credible or worthwhile than those of an average Fan Boy. The majority of the time, Joe’s opinions are pretty comical. Especially when Joe is trying to cover himself for nonsense he has previously spouted that has been proven to be doubtful or just plain wrong. Or when Joe discovers something like Bucs officials saying they love Glennon on one occasion then saying they only like him on a subsequent occasion. Only to Joe is something like that an example of the Buccaneer’s lack of candor. It forces Joe to do an analysis about what officials really think deep in the darkest parts of their souls. What would we do without you Joe? We’d miss the revelation of all of those hidden meanings and the brilliant analyses you do to prove two plus two really does equal five. I guess you can’t help it since one of your mentors appears to be the always ingenious Steve Duemig. Hilarious!!!!!

  13. BirdDoggers Says:

I would think a QB would’ve been drafted if there was a consensus among Lovie, Licht and Tedford. Instead, they drafted a basketball team. The redzone efficiency should go way up with all the 6’5”+ targets to throw to.

  14. Joe Says:

    Leonard:

If Joe is so appalling to you, no one is forcing you to visit this site. There are plenty of Bucs sites out there that rarely update during the offseason.

  15. robert7 Says:

what is BPSN???? I hear it quoted on here a lot. my only memory of them other than constant quotes on here is they are the clowns who backed and then leaked dirt (probably coordinated with free or his agent) on jfro 6 pack, hence I never had a need to look them up or find them relevant.

  16. JFat Says:

Gonna be funny listening to Deumig back-track when Licht is on the phone with him in a few minutes.

  17. robert7 Says:

yeah leonard. as someone who often rants at joe at least he gives us laughs. I mean who doesn’t root for the guy who couldn’t pull in his youth?

  18. kh Says:

Where do we sign up to torture Joe?

  19. William Says:

    Entertainment purposes only…

    Enjoy!

  20. Leonard Scarnesi Says:

Sir, you don’t get to claim Joe is a thief. If that were Joe, Joe would have been locked up long ago. –Joe

  21. JFat Says:

I will eat the crow, Deumig didn’t back off his stance. Although, I liked Licht’s response basically telling him his staff knows QB’s better than the media.

  22. William Says:

Joe we are having fun too. Don’t let them pull your strings.

  23. Bucky1 Says:

    @ Josh P (sure not Josh F?)
“wait to see what’s available next year in quarterbacks” Surly you don’t believe that Siht! L&L looked at our quarterbacks, listened to other GM’s & coaches (Not local media people who think they are the end all of know all) and made their decision to roll the dice with what we have. To this observer, it’s as simple as that.

  24. Schlomie Nudnik Gentile Says:

Man oh man, could you hear the stammering and stuttering of the radio host when speaking with Jason Licht? He made an attempt to ask a Licht to give a explanation pertaining to the skill set of Glennon and why the Bucs believe in him. He couldn’t get it without stuttering and flailing. He proclaims to have this no nonsense, direct attitude but he was shaking in his boots. He felt so intimidated by Light.

  25. BarberBucFan Says:

Nicks will be there at training camp! My sources say he is in Japan right now getting a bionic toe replacement.

Seriously, all Glennon has to learn is to step up in the pocket when he feels pressure.

Please tell me how you defend Jvax 6’5, Evans 6’5, and 6’5 Jenkins/Wright 6’4 on one side, then you have to put your nickle guy or safety on a speedster like Herron/Simms/Demps????

Pick your poison, jump ball on one side or “catch me if you can can” on the other.

  26. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Joe,

At this point, you have dug yourself in such a hole re: Glennon and Manziel, it’s like a car wreck. Of course everyone will continue to rubberneck. Just like the climatic moments when the L&L ignored your golden boy at 7, I next look forward to Glennon being a successful starter. I’m sure even then you will not admit you were wrong. That’s what makes this so fun.

And kudos to you for it. It’s a good business (I know, I know, Joe writes what he wants blah, blah, blah, but, it certainly didn’t lower daily hits)

  27. Joe Says:

At this point, you have dug yourself in such a hole re: Glennon and Manziel, it’s like a car wreck.

What hole? Joe doesn’t think Glennon will win a Super Bowl. Please give Joe a link where Glennon took one snap in a playoff game? You guys are acting like Joe’s wanting John Elway benched. Geez.

Hope you guys are giving the Pewter fellows a load of crap too. Joe never went on radio and “guaranteed” Glennon would be traded this past weekend. Have you b!tched at them yet? If not, why not?

All Joe is saying is he doesn’t see Glennon doing anything special and the Bucs can do much better for a quarterback. Nothing different than what Phil Simms said. Of course, Simms has no clue what he is talking about, right? You guys are off your rockers. A hole!

If Glennon leads the Bucs to a Super Bowl win, Joe will personally buy a keg of beer for all his readers to guzzle free. That’s right, save this to your computer. Joe promises.

Joe is putting money (and free beer) where his mouth is. How about you? Willing to buy free beer if Glennon doesn’t even get the Bucs to a Super Bowl?

    Step up! Be a man.

  28. JBuc Says:

Interesting that both L&L came from different organizations and now that they have had a chance to work with Glennon and see him stacked up against the prospects they brought in to evaluate, including little JFootball, they believe he is their QB of the future. They have no allegiance to him and could have moved in a different direction very easily like they did with a number of other players. Maybe the kid can play!

Also, heard Big [edited] argue with Jason Licht about whether or not Glennon has a big time arm. Hmmmm, one guy has played and been around football all his life and the other gets paid to act like he knows what he’s talking about on the radio despite a lack of credentials. Wonder who I should agree with?

  29. Schlomie Nudnik Gentile Says:

The Radio Host says he is rarely wrong. Hmmm? Didn’t he proclaim that

    Chris Simms
    Joey Galloway
    Derrick Brooks
    Josh Freeman

Would all go on to accomplish great things after being let go by the Bucs??

He also stated that Ben Zobrist, would never be a decent player. Furthermore, didn’t he proclaim that the Bucs were moving to L.A? These are just a few things off the top of my head. I have to get back to work at my dental office.

  30. tj Says:

lol love the banter, brady was crap his first yr, flaco was crap first couple yrs give l&l a chance

  31. SoonerninTampa Says:

I sure read a lot of what Joe rights as being right in line with Booger on the air…Glennon is just a guy…nothing special.

    I laugh at Booger too

Not one single person knows what Glennon is capable of with proper tutelage under good coaching and some actual weapons to work with…you know, more than just 1 WR (VJ)

So we can all just take a deep breath and watch how this unfolds…I like some of the things Glennon did last…so other things…not so much, but I am willing to give the guy a shot…hell, he beat out Russell Wilson at NCST so he can’t be all that bad…

  32. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I, too, will buy a keg of beer for my readers if Glennon leads the Bucs to the Super Bowl.

    I’m a man! I’m forty (one)!

Why should I bother the Pewter guys when I can’t even get you to acknowledge that terrible 90% prediction re: Glennon went horribly wrong?

I thought Simms knew what he was talking about with Freeman partying, but, you seemed to discount that. So, you know, who knows who to believe, right? ;-)

  33. biff barker Says:

Judging by some of the responses posted by your readers Joe, one can safely surmise they have already found their own beer.

  34. Couch Fan Says:

Who is this host several people are referring to? And what show was Licht on?

  35. biff barker Says:

Not to worry, by October we’ll all be clamoring for the Smith kid to be the starter.

  36. StAugBuc Says:

Those are good odds you give yourself Joe: 97% you are right, 3% you’re wrong! Plus, 1 keg for all of us loyal readers ain’t much! :)

  37. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Schiano knows talent, Lovie and Licht agree with Schiano on Glennon, ToesOnTheLine knows he just read Joe is buying us a keg of beer if Glennon leafds the team to the SB win, I say that should be enough incentive for even the most cynical of the trade Glennon for a 6-pack crowd to root for him to do well this year…Joe’s buying!

  38. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I will also buy all my readers a keg of beer if Joe’s BFF Johnny Manziel leads the Browns to the Super Bowl.

And not schwag beer like Joe drinks.

  39. Joe Says:

    StAugBuc:

All Joe wants is a Super Bowl. Nothing else. Joe wants a quarterback he feels comfortably can take the team deep in the playoffs. Joe is not interested in one-and-dones in the playoffs. What exactly is wrong with that? What is so horrible about that?

But all the a-holes like Oil Derrick Brooks are freaking out acting like Joe wants John Elway benched and that Mike Glennon is the best quarterback since Brett Favre.

So Joe is putting money where his mouth is. If Glennon proves Joe wrong, if Oil Derrick Brooks and the rest of the Joe haters that Glennon is the Messiah and can lead the Bucs to the promised land, that he can actually win a Super Bowl, Joe will happily buy free beer. After all, if Joe is such a dumbarse and so wrong, then Glennon can win a Super Bowl, right???

Joe, I love ya and don’t come here to argue, but you seem to be saying that a QB is only worthwhile if they win a SuperBowl?

  42. Joe Says:

Joe, I love ya and don’t come here to argue, but you seem to be saying that a QB is only worthwhile if they win a SuperBowl?

    Isn’t that the goal?

Loved Dan Marino. LOVED HIM. But Elway got the rings.

  43. Bucfan#37 Says:

All I can do is root for the Bucs to get their fans excited again. I’m fine with the drafted players. The defence is good, the offence will be better. I look for the team to win roughly half of their games. That’s not going too far out on a limb. And Joe, I understand your concern about the QB situation and why it seems lacking. We fans have waited this long for a genuine franchise player at that most important position, a further wait could be likely. I appreciate you effort to keep the fans informed of all things Bucs. Great job!

  44. StAugBuc Says:

    @JOE,

Yes it’s the goal, but only one QB does that every year. This back and forth could go on ad infinitem, so it’s pointless. Luck and Kap, to name 2, have no SB. Are they worthless? Or are there other factors involved?

  45. Josh P Says:

@Bucky1 if you think L&L area going to put their jobs on the line for someone they had nothing to do with being your clueless. I’m a huge Lovie fan but he’s also a coach and is never going to show all his cards.

  46. Tnew Says:

Tired of the “Glennon is only good if he wins the Super Bowl” line. There is so much more into it than that. History is littered on both sides of that fence. Marino doesn’t suck, neither does Fouts. Favre is a pretty good qb and I think he is slightly better than Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Flacco or Russell Wilson.

People love to put Matt Ryan in elite status but he hasn’t one one either and his team was worse than the bucs last year. So does that make him worse than Glennon. By that logic we have the third best qb in the division and he is our backup. If Manziel doesn’t win the Super Bowl did Cleveland mess up?

I understand this is still some anti Schiano backlash. I also was one that put a bunch of stock into Freeman (although I hated the draft pick I gleefully said I was wrong by year 2 to te point I have a 5 jersey), but enough is enough. By accounts I read, McCown looked stellar (like pro bowl good according to pr) in the entire mini camp, and Glennon looked good. We should be rooting for this to work out.

I was on record on this site saying I hope Schiano and Freeman were both back for 2014 because if they were both gone the season would’ve sucked. I’ll say the same thing now. I hope next season we draft everything except a qb, because that will mean the position is solid

  47. joe$ucfan Says:

What’s the matter Joe, Leonard make you want to stop sucking your thumb and take the ball and go home. What an immmature response to his opinion. Think you got your names mixed up. –Joe
Johnson, Flacco, Dilfer all cant’t get out of their own way but won SuperBowls. Even Mannig would have struggled with this offense last year. You cannot make such a definite statement about MG until he has a real chance. Im not saying he’s going to be successful but you don’t know that either. Just like you dont know any of these rookie QB’s are going to be any good. It’s all opinions anyway by us but you should not sound like Dumig that your opinion is the last word.

Again, you seem to be another Bucs fan who doesn’t realize it was Lovie to stripped Glennon of the starting job, not Joe. –Joe

  48. Joe Says:

What an immmature response to his opinion.

Recent history is not kind to quarterbacks who lead a team the worst offense in the league. Unless, of course, you believe Brady Quinn in a Super Bowl quarterback.

Feel free to look it up for yourself. Joe already has. Joe doesn’t like banking on obscure accidents to happen, sorry.

Man, the vitriol people have for Joe to have the gall to suggest a backup quarterback won’t win a Super Bowl. You would have thought Joe punched Chucky or something.

Hope you guys are this outraged at Lovie when McCown starts this fall.

  49. tourman Says:

Way to stick your neck out Joe: “If Glennon takes us to the SB you’ll buy a keg of beer!” So any QB who doesn’t go to the SB is not worthy of being a starting QB, is that what you’re saying?

Remainder deleted. Sir, you don’t get to make up stuff about Joe. Thanks. –Joe

You’ve been an egotistical condescending prick MANY times in the last few months.

Do you not realize this is a third-person blog? Egotistical? Really? LOL –Joe

  51. Joe Says:

Yeah, Oil, Joe tends to call people a-holes who attack him. You are the one having a temper tantrum. Completely losing it about a backup quarterback. Just because Joe doesn’t believe a backup quarterback can win the Bucs a Super Bowl, you are going nuts like Joe took a baseball bat to a priest.

And if Joe is such a “prick,” no need for you to visit the site, right?

  52. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

It’s not like Joe promised Glennon would be traded last weekend by you-know-who.

  56. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

No, you only gave a 90% guarantee he would be gone by today. Remind to not roll with you in Vegas.

  57. joe$ucfan Says:

You keep harping on the worst offense. We know that but he was just a rookie. Aikman I think went 0-15 first year. He needs to hold the clip board for a time and be allowed to develop or not. I dont think Brady started his first year. He made alot of bad plays but he also made alot of good ones. I have faith in Tedford due to his track record until he proves me wrong.

  58. tmaxcon Says:

I don’t criticize you guys often but come on man

If Joe took those comments, then Joe would take hours each week editing misrepresentations, hate speech, etc. Just not worth Joe’s time investment. –Joe

  59. Joe Says:

Good point about Aikman (not a third round pick). Good research. Cowboys were last in the NFL in offense that year.

So we are hoping that a once-in-a-quarter-century fluke happens for the Bucs?

Not a good bet. Hope Joe is dead wrong, but not a good bet.

    Little business lesson for you:

Name any business that allows unfettered negative comments about a business partner. Hint: If that happened, two said businesses would quickly part ways with each other.

Joe doesn’t understand how that is so difficult for people to grasp.

  61. Couch Fan Says:

So its more realistic to hope for a rookie QB to light it up there 1st season? If you look back in history there aren’t many who did that either. All I’m saying is a person needs more than 13 games to determine what they are. Something which few seem to want to give the kid.

Since we are talking fantasy, why no love for Mike Kafka? Isn’t he misunderstood, too? Hasn’t Lovie given him the chance to start?

  68. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I’m sure he didn’t realize you needed to be informed. Players compete in training camp. If one outperforms the other, they’ll play. This can’t be news to you.

Joe asked that exact question directly to Glennon. He told Joe to ask Lovie.

  71. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    That’s cool Joe.

Just like you got reminded how utterly wrong you were about the draft, about the team friendly Freeman extension, about Dominik, you will get reminded about this too.

Not because you’re wrong, but, because you act like an ahole about it (shoes on the other foot)

  72. Joe Says:

Not because you’re wrong, but, because you act like an ahole about it (shoes on the other foot)

Shoe? Well, here comes the boot.

  73. skelly Says:

    Gees Fellas.

Reading this thread is intense. I for one loved the draft. Really hope that Glennon turns out to be a good QB, but like that he gets a chance to learn under a QB whose seen a lot in this league. As for prognostications about who will be successful and who will be a bust, most of you guys are much smarter than me to be so certain in your opinions.

As for the Joes. I come to your site daily for all the updates. We don’t always agree but that is what it’s all about. I think you guys do a great job with the coverage.

That said, I’ll take my medicine if Glennon sucks and credit others who saw it before I did. But boy, a few of you guys, including the host, are really out a limb saying this guy can’t play. Time will tell.

  74. ToesOnTheLine Says:

McCown is currently listed as the starter on the depth chart but it’s not written in stone either. I’d imagine it’s a similar situation as what is going on in Cleveland…Hoyer has been named the starter for now as well. Fluid situations.

None at all. But I dont take that to mean it wont happen or is unlikely to happen. I just think Lovie is keeping everything in house and far away from the media.

  77. Couch Fan Says:

    likely to happen*

  78. Phillip Says:

Having a QB with “POTENTIAL” to put a team on their and win a game is what we ALL should be aiming for… Not a QB that can manage a game and hope for dominating D to bail us out week in and week out… People love to say oh the Ravens did it with Dilfer… Have you see how the game is played now as compared to how it was then? Then comes the Seahawks from this past season.. Pretty sure the Defense didn’t win every game for the Seahawks this year… Ya 13 games isn’t alot to judge someone by.. But giving him excuse after excuse shouldn’t be a response either…

The Panthers drafted Jimmy Clausen thinking he was going to be their “Franchise QB” then saw the opportunity to grab someone they felt like was too good of a talent to pass up in Newton the very NEXT YEAR.. Think the Panthers are regretting that decision now?

  79. skelly Says:

Phillip. I am pretty sure if the bucs land the overall 1st pick next year, god forbid, we’d be drafting Winston or whoever the top QB is. That is not what we were looking at this year.

  80. Schlomie Nudnik Gentile Says:

Interesting how the talk show mouth has proclaimed contempt for Heisman winning quarterbacks, but yet, in this case, he has a mancrush. What a hypocrite. I wonder how he felt about Danny Wuerrfel.

  81. Warthog Says:

Glennon will start before the end of the season. Regime will want to see what they’ve got in him ahead of then 2015 draft.

  82. Brandon Says:

If the Bucs drafted Manziel and then Dexter Jackson, Nance Nimmo, Austin King, Larry Brackins, and Darnell McDonald… he would’ve give the team an “A+”.

I can’t see this draft any worse than a B+, then add in the additions in UDFA in QB Brett Smith, WR Solomon Patton, LB Nate Askew, and OT Matt Patchan, and this rookie class is no worse than an A.

  83. Brandon Says:

Still Joe, stick to your guns, I respect that. I’m no Glennonite for sure, I just wasn’t sold with giving the keys to the franchise to Johnny Man-child.

  84. JBuc Says:

    Joe,

I’ll bet you your favorite six pack that Johnny Football does not put up the same numbers Glennon put up last year. Future Super Bowl wins are difficult to predict when so much depends on the team around he QB. I’d think we would both agree that Glennon did not have much to work with last year. Johnny may not even start this year and he’s already down his #1 receiver.

    Good luck!

  85. Shawnbucfan Says:

We should have a bet who wins the Super Bowl first ? Glennon or Johnny Manziel . Maybe a keg?

  86. Alex2013 Says:

Why are you so against #8?

  87. Joe Says:

Why are you so against #8?

Not against No. 8, but very much for a much better quarterback.

  88. BucsDraft Says:

If you want a much better QB I don’t believe he was in this draft and I guess L&L didn’t either. I do like the nickname for our giants though “the skyline”. Much better than “dunkaneers”.

  89. BoJim Says:

Once again. Glennon needs, no deserves another chance. With the weapons we now have He just might be a much improved QB. Not having an oline will not help any QB. Just ask Peyton.
