Bratty Jay Cutler Misses Josh McCownMay 7th, 2014
Bucs fans wondered aloud, and in some cases still mutter to themselves like mental patients on corner barstools, why Bucs coach Lovie Smith wanted journeyman quarterback Josh McCown so badly.
(The Mike Glennon Mob asks the same thing, only they don’t try to hide their feelings. They just holler at complete strangers walking down the sidewalk in broad daylight.)
Well, when Joe broke that the Bucs, led by McCown, had the entire offense working out on their own at a local park, it spoke volumes for McCown’s leadership.
But Lovie also admitted one reason he wanted McCown is because he knew what kind of a person and a leader he was from their days in Chicago. It seems McCown is already being missed in the Second City. Per Chicago Tribune Bears beat guy Rich Campbell, Bears quarterback bratty Jay Cutler is already feeling the void left by his former backup.
McCown was awarded, in absentia, the Brian Piccolo Award by the Bears, an award named after the late Bears running back Brian Piccolo, an award given to both a rookie and a veteran player who embodies courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication and a sense of humor.
Cutler accepted the award for McCown, saying, “My only regret is I wish I would have met him earlier in life.”
The award, now in its 45th year, is voted on by Bears players.
For Cutler to say something like that publicly speaks volumes. McCown sent an e-mail message to the Bears explaining why he could not be in Chicago to receive the award, another sign of why Lovie thought so much of McCown, documented Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune.
“I apologize for my absence today. However, I thought it would be out of line with the spirit of the Brian Piccolo Award to leave my current teammates in what is a crucial time of the building process this offseason.”
No one, not one person at One Buc Palace, would have thought anything untoward if McCown would have flown to Chicago for a day to receive an important award from the NFL’s signature franchise. But McCown thought better to stay back with his new teammates.
Kind of backs up everything Lovie has said about McCown.
