Measuring Issues For Allen Robinson

Joe would do cartwheels if the Bucs landed high-flying All-American Allen Robinson

Weird stuff is going on with Penn State wide receiver Allen Robinson. Does he have a twin or a body double helping him get through the pre-draft process?

Before Joe explains, Joe wants to remind readers he’s been on board the Robinson bandwagon for many months. Joe watches plenty of Big Ten football, and Robinson is a true standout wideout who surely would be first-round material if not for the incredible receiver depth of this year’s draft.

Heck, Joe wouldn’t be shocked at all if Robinson produces in the NFL like a good first-rounder should, even though many project him as a third-round pick.

But there are odd measurements surrounding Robinson. Per the reputable Patriot-News, Robinson claims his 6-2, 220-pound size measured at the NFL Scouting combine was inaccurate. Robinson said he was really measured at 208 pounds. Then yesterday on Jay Mohr Sports, heard locally on WDAE-AM 620, Robinson claimed combine officials were pushing down on his head a lot during measurements, and he really stands “6-3 7/8.”

Then there’s the 40-yard dash time. Per reports out of Penn State, Robinson shaved his 40-yard dash time down from 4.6 at the combine to the 4.45 range at his Pro Day.  “I think it was real important,” he said of the better 40, via Patriot-News. “Just trying to get the technique, because a lot of factors factor into the 40 besides true speed. It’s a lot that goes into it, and after the combine I went back down to my training facility and that’s where we really worked on it.”

Well, the sprint time makes a little sense. Some NFL hopefuls don’t consult with track coaches as much as others, and they pay for it with imperfect form in their sprints. But put helmets and pads on them, and they’ve got the necessary “football” speed.

Regardless, Joe would be downright giddy if the Bucs landed Robinson on Friday. The guy’s a playmaker and an outstanding athlete, the Big Ten receptions leader each of the past two seasons, and he’s just 20 years old. (You can listen to the interview of Robinson below via 620wdae.com)

No complaints about drafting Robinson in the 3rd round. Just not high in the 2nd round. Regardless of his complaints he’s just not a top 50 player in this deep draft. Although, again, he’d be a nice addition in the 3rd.

Martavis Bryant in round 2 is a nice option. Not many talk about the OTHER Clemson WR. He’s pretty good.

Martavis Bryant can be a stud imo he underrated

I meant to say top 40, not top 50. Allen is right in that range on most big boards, but I think there are better players at the very top of the 2nd round where we pick. Now if we move back in the 2nd through a trade, then yes, Allen might be a nice option.

My only concern is that he seems to be making excuses for such minor things. I’m sure teams that bring him in weigh and measure him again so the combine numbers really don’t mean anything. What will he do when he has a bad game or two? Minor red flag but red none the less. If he’s not a diva head-case, I’d be fine with him in the 3rd but nothing earlier.

When I was going thru MEPS on my first day of my military career, the little bastard who was measuring my height and weight, literally hung off the thing on top of my head trying to get my height under 6’0″, also he helped on the scales, as he weighed me in at 147lbs, my actual height weight going in that day was 6’1 1/2″ 139lbs. But that didn’t fit the militaries paradigm fro height/weight.

Some names that no one is talking about to the Bucs in Round 1 but which could end up being the surprise pick: Taylor Lewan, Justin Gilbert, Ryan Shazier, Derek Carr (yes a handful of folks are talking about him to the Bucs but not many), Odell Beckham, Eric Ebron.

Don’t be surprised if we get surprised.

A 3rd or 4th rounder that I would love to see wearing the new uni is Abbrederis from Wisconsin. Dude flat out knows how to play the WR position. His size and speed don’t necessarily match up with the ‘standard receiver’, but his production as a badger and the way he attacks the field on game day is huge!

FLBoy I wouldn’t be surprised if you are right, about the pick being someone we haven’t been talking about. Seemed to be the case with the prior regime. It was always someone no one here was discussing. Don’t know anything about L&L might do.

FLBoy & Thomas – I have thought that as well. That is why a name like Mosley keeps popping into my head. That guy is like a Kuechly with more athletic ability. Mosley/David would be a sick combo. They might even be able to move down a few spots and get him (like they did with the whole clayborn – barron deal)

I thought I was the only one who noticed Allen Robinson, Joe I’m glad you did your intelligence a favor and wrote about something other than Manziel. Robinson has been knocked because of his speed at the combine. But I think he will be one of the better receivers in this draft. If you watch his game tape his his explosive in his cuts and breaks and is tremendous after the catch…and oh he ran a 4.45 at his pro day with a 39″ vertical. I’d love it if we traded down in the second. He won’t make it to the 3rd.

he’s a third round projection because of his speed and ceiling as a player. He has talent but we’ll see what happens
