“In The Third Round… “

May 5th, 2014

Versatile USC OL Marcus Martin might be a nice pick-up in the third round.

The weakest link on the Bucs is the offensive line. Yeah, really. Joe knows others will argue wide receiver, and that is a fair point. But at least the Bucs have a Pro Bowler at wide receiver. Can’t say that about the O-line.

Shoot, the best player on the offensive line, left tackle Anthony Collins, has never started a half season in any given year. That doesn’t help Joe rest at night.

In this seven-round mock draft, Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski of WHFS-FM 98.7 has Bucs general manager Jason Licht addressing the need on the offensive line by picking up monster Marcus Martin of USC, who can play both center and guard.

Of course, the Bucs have a new center, but it’s very possible the Bucs may have holes to fill at both guard positions. So Martin would have ample opportunity to get a lot of playing time, if not start.

Below is what the WalterFootball.com crowd had to say about Martin, who started two years at guard before moving to center this past season.

Martin was a surprise entry for the 2014 NFL Draft. He probably should have returned for his senior season to improve before going pro. Martin started his career at left guard and was the starter there for the Trojans in 2011 and 2012. The junior moved to center for 2013 and had a quality season. He has some athleticism and versatility.

Martin has good strength to open holes in the ground game with surprising quickness and agility to hit blocks on the second level. He has the size to match up on heavy nose tackles and shouldn’t get pushed around. Martin could use more development in his pass blocking when faced with a one-on-one, especially against smaller defensive tackles who are speed rushers. There are a few areas Martin could stand to improve – such as his ability to sustain blocks.

    “But at least the Bucs have a Pro Bowler at wide receiver. Can’t say that about the O-line.” Correction, we do have a Pro Bowler under contract with a big nasty looking toe, the question is whether or not he will ever see the field again. At this point I wouldn’t bet on it.

    OG David Yankey might be a good choice in the 3rd round as well.

    @Diehard_Bob

    I suspect we’ll find out for sure within a week or so.

    btw, Martin is coming into the league as a center, so I doubt he will be in Tampa.

    Neither is Joe, which is why he wrote what he did.

    Why no optimism on Nicks Joe? You saud u saw his toe and it looked normal, so if they shoot his toe up with cortisone and painkillers me might be able to play sundays and even practice once in awhile. Gruden gave older players relief from practice maybe we can do it with Nicks and get a couple years outta him before he’s fleeced us for all that money.
