Signs Point To Johnny Football

May 4th, 2014

johnny football 0114bJoe has stated before he would be very surprised if at some point this weekend the Bucs do not draft a quarterback. First round, second round, third round, third day. It really would be a stunner if the Bucs meet for rookie minicamp next week and there is no drafted quarterback on the roster with his last name taped to the front of his helmet.

The fellows over at PewterReport.com believe the same thing. In fact, the chieftain of Pewter Report, Scott Reynolds, believes there is a 50/50 chance your newest Bucs quarterback could be Johnny Football if not Derek Carr.

The way PewterReport.com sees it, the Bucs very well could be taking a quarterback in the first round, and it will either be Manziel or Carr – perhaps the two best-suited quarterbacks for Tampa Bay head coach Lovie Smith himself and for offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, whose system caters to strong-armed, accurate passers with mobility. The first case we’ll state is for who we believe to be the highest-rated quarterback in the draft – Manziel.

Smith loves players from the state of Texas. As PewterReport.com pointed out in its Bucs’ Pre-Draft Press Conference Observations story earlier this week, Smith, a native of Big Sandy, Texas, had a hand in drafting seven players from Texas schools while in Chicago. And a couple of key free agent signings – quarterback Josh McCown and left tackle Anthony Collins – were both raised in the state of Texas.

That, and the reality that the Bucs need a quarterback for the future as McCown turns 35 on July 4, coupled with the fact that Smith hired former Texas A&M strength and conditioning coach Dave Kennedy, puts Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner in play for Tampa Bay. And not just with the seventh overall pick.

Reynolds also notes that if indeed the Bucs are enamored with Johnny Football, then they won’t roll the dice he is still on the board at No. 7; they would trade up to get him.

Now Joe knows all about the connection between Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford and Carr. The two have known each other since Carr was a youngster as Carr’s older brother, David, played for Tedford at Fresno State. The two are on a first-name basis and damned near pseudo-family members.

But knowing a guy so well doesn’t always mean Tedford wants Carr. Since he knows Carr so much, Tedford also knows both his traits and drawbacks as well. It’s a two-way street.

No quarterback impressed Joe from a speaking standpoint more than Carr. Being polished and having a strong story to speak about doesn’t necessarily translate into completions.

Would be slightly disappointed with carr at 7. But if manziel is gone and tedford feels like he is perfect for what he’s trying to do, then I will be ok with it. If carr is the target tho I’d rather us trade back in the first, take somebody like beckham or cooks, then trade back into the first sigh our 2nd and new picks for carr

If there’s a God out there, please don’t let this happen. I’m pleading to the universe, tea leaves, stars, everything that would not make that happen. I will be visiting Louisiana this week. Go deep down in the bayou to find that lady that Doug Williams visited when he left Tampa. I personally will put a stop to this. And if we draft Johnny, I will make her to shrink Joe’s package. Lol!

    Smokescrren…………..

  5. MR.T Says:

I would much prefer the Bucs trade back if anything and get more picks and most certainly not trade up especially for one of these QB’s. I will be most happy when Thursday is over and we can put this JF crap behind us, it is getting so tiresome.

  6. JBFstalkingjohnnyfootBALLS Says:

Sorry Joe, too much Johnny talk. I believe the Bucs could trade down and get Carr. The ties of Jeff Tedford and the Carr family is big. Maybe thats why the Bucs looking to trade Glennon. So they can bring David in along with Derek. Thats the rumor out that some teams looking to bring him in with his brother. But they would have to pick before the Cards and the Browns. The Cards might be in the market for a replacement for Carlson Palmer. And try to trade up from the 2nd round to get Odell Beckham. That’s my dream first day draft. Derek Carr and Odell Beckham. And with the second pick we draft OG Gabe Jackson.

  7. passthebuc Says:

@Joe. I am curious. are you going to pine for years about JF like you do about RW

  8. Joe Says:

@Joe. I am curious. are you going to pine for years about JF like you do about RW

    RW??? Ricky Williams???

  9. Zach Says:

No matter how great our defense might be, we still need to put points on the board and Manziel does that. Sure he will do things that will make you scratch your head but he does more things that make you go ‘wow’. Lovie’s lackluster offence got him fired in Chicago, so I think he’s ready to be explosive on that side of the ball. We can get starting caliber receivers and linemen in the second and third rounds.

  10. Maze Says:

Please Lord let Manziel fall to the Buccaneers

  11. Posey99 Says:

    Rachael Watson =rw?

  12. JohnnyNo Says:

“Pride comes before a fall”. Joe, are you going to commit hari kari if you don’t get your man child “Johnny F Football” come draft day. I see a bruising sotty drunk when you get mighty disappointed. Unless Glennon is traded like you have promoted before Thursday, be ready to accept a 4th round pick for another quarterback ,at best, if L&L reside to add a quarter back. Jason Licht proclaimed this weekend that they were not going to draft a certain player at “7” but best player available. (check the tape) I personally would bet that would be a receiver or defensive line player. Either way, I for one will just be glad when it is over. Side note, I could even be tempted to dance naked down Del Mabry if Johnny F boy got to stay in Texas. I will try not to say I don’t want Johnny Party Football, but I don’t. I believe we would be better served with help on Offensive line, Wide receiver and another tight end. All in all I am ready for L&L to step up and draft bold. Hope they hit the jackpot, or in 4 years this year’s draft choice’s will bight them in the ass. Ask Dominik.

  13. PRBucFan Says:

So… which signs are talking about? lol

  14. Eric Says:

    Now the browns want a tackle…..the raiders don’t want a QB……

    Looking good.

Only three more rank speculation days left!

  15. BucsQcCity Says:

They all lie. 2 QB will be taken before us. When JF or tB will come off the board teams will go into panic mode

  16. phil Says:

We should do everything we can to get Johnny Football. I wouldn’t use a first round pick on Carr. I would rather have Garoppolo than Carr.

  17. Dreambig Says:

I am all for JF, but he will be gone before we pick.

  18. Agatha Weed Says:

JBF….there is nothing there to begin with.

  19. Bobby M. Says:

Aaron Murray is telling people close to him in Tampa the Bucs have been privately communicating with him on multiple occasions and he believes they snag him in the 2nd or 3rd round…..Look for the Bucs to trade down to snag an extra 2nd round pick and Glennon to be shipped out for a 4th

  20. BoJim Says:

Smokescreens. Smokescreens everywhere. Up until the Bucs first pick.

  21. rayray1 Says:

L & L will draft someone that can help from the get go. Which would not be a QB. O line or receiver @ 7 or trade back for more picks. Plus the Tedford offense sounds like a run oriented check down passing attack. Not JM’s fashion @ A&M.

  22. dan Says:

-whose system caters to strong-armed, accurate passers with mobility.

This sounds a whole lot like Bortles actually….I’m surprised none of the Bucs websites/blogs are talking about him. Is that because they don’t think he’ll make it to #7? I’ve seen a few mocks were he and Bridgewater fall.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As you all might recall, they’ve already stated that the QB they have rated at the top of their board is NOT the one everyone else has rated there.

    It won’t be Manziel then.

Carr is the best suited for the Bucs.

  24. Rob Says:

All the signs pointing to Johnny Football is the best evidence available that they’re not that interested in Johnny Football.

My bet is they’re DYING to trade down so they can pick up some extra picks and take Carr.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bobby M. Says
“Aaron Murray is telling people close to him in Tampa the Bucs have been privately communicating with him on multiple occasions and he believes they snag him in the 2nd or 3rd round…”

We better hope not. Because he will not succeed in the NFL as more than a backup, if he’s lucky.

But that is the case for all of the QBs outside of the top 4 this year.

It is going to be Carr. It has to be. And it won’t be reaching at 7. Yes, people will claim so at first, but when looking back people will say he should have been the top QB in this draft.

  26. Eric Says:

Imagine what Johnny has planned for Cinco de Mayo.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Here is how on top of things Pewter Report is…they think Josh McCown started 8 games last year.

    NOT TRUE.

He started 5 games only. And of those 5 games? He lost 2 of them.

He PLAYED in three other games, in which he had 20, 9, and 4 passing attempts consecutively. And all three were losses.

So, if Pewter Report wants to include those three non starts, then Josh McCown went 5-3 in games he played in last year. A losing record.

They point to his interceptions in those games as 1, which is true. The thing they brush over is his 11 SACKS from holding the ball too long…or his 3 FUMBLES, 2 of which happened in games he started.

Ironically, the most games he ever started in a season is 13…waaaaay back in 2004. In the remaining 10 of his seasons in the NFL, he only started more than 6 games once. 5 Years ago.

I really do not see how anyone could think this guy can be a starter.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    dan Says
“This sounds a whole lot like Bortles actually….I’m surprised none of the Bucs websites/blogs are talking about him.”

I actually would not mind Bortles. The fans would have to accept that he is similar to Jake Plummer though. High in INTs, but also high in TDs.

  29. Broy3434 Says:

And Bonzai strikes again with his Patented stupidity. Do you even realize you just said he went 5-3 with a LOSING RECORD. I can’t wait for draft day because if I hear one more time that Lovie coming out stating he likes Manziel is a smoke screen you’re crazy. NEWSFLASH- 30/32 TEAMS LOVE MANZIEL. By him saying that, ESPN stillll has the Bucs taking Evans because a coax saying they like the only freshman heisman is just obvious. Ya it’s possibly a smoke screen but stop actin like you know for sure. I’ve heard way too many people say “L and L will do this and that” if anything, you saying that makes it wen more unlikely cuz there’s no way these stupid opinions expressed in here are the same as ones expressed by real GMs

  30. Broy3434 Says:

And JohnnyNo didn’t u just call me “mean” on an older post and then proceed to ask Joe if he’s gonna “commit Hari Kari” if L and L doesn’t draft Johnny. For the record I want to know why you and Bonzai would do if Clowney goes first overall. Please , entertain me with what exactly you would do if GM

  31. Broy3434 Says:

    A coach saying*^

  32. Bucamania Says:

All for JFF but the Brownies won’t pass him up. Detroit and Cleveland love to crush our draft dreams.

  33. Justin Says:

Carr at 7 is a massive reach, and I don’t think Lovie hiring the former Texas A&M strength coach is direct foreshadowing they will draft Manziel. Before the 2012, Raheem hired LSU’s former cornerback coach to work in Tampa while Morris Claiborne was projected to come to the bay, and they passed on him for Barron.

  34. Maze Says:

All signs point to L&L loving them some Johnny Football. This team desperately need the juice Manziel would provide to uplift this floundering franchise

  35. Broy3434 Says:

In what way has Cleveland ruined Bucs dreams. I’ll give you the Lions despite the fact id officially rather have GMAC but did CLE ruin our dreams by drafting Trent…who did we end up getting? Oh ya Lavonte Doug and Barron

  36. Broy3434 Says:

Maze^^good point. That’s going to be exactly why they do it. All of a sudden the Bucs become a team ESPN doesn’t stop talking about. That leads to McCoy becoming a household name

  37. BucsDraft Says:

Would be the dumbest thing to trade up to get a QB that isn’t worth a top 10 pick. That is all the QBs.

  38. Ernest T. Bass Says:

If the Browns take Johnny, there will be an article with Johnny in a Browns uniform. The article will state not going after Johnny was the biggest mistake since the invasion of Iraq.

  39. PRBucFan Says:

He can be a starter he proved it just last year 😉

And 5-3 is a winning record buddy ahahaha

  40. PRBucFan Says:

And again, please what are these legitimate signs?
