Johnny Football Vs. Jameis Winston

Johnny Football's numbers against Jameis Winston's common opponents may surprise.

Johnny Football’s numbers against Jameis Winston’s common opponents may surprise.

Yes, Joe knows the Bucs need a quarterback for the near future. Starting quarterback Josh McCown is 34 and only signed to a two-year pact. Backup quarterback Mike Glennon could be gone depending on how he practices this week, says a local morning sports radio personality.

Joe is awfully confident at some point in the three-day draft next month the Bucs will draft a quarterback. Whether it is Johnny Football in the first round, Derek Carr in the second round, Jimmy Garoppolo in the third round or Aaron Murray on the third day, Joe isn’t sure but he’s willing to lay cash the Bucs have a new signal-caller on the roster after the second weekend in May.

Of course, Joe is pleading with Bucs general manager Jason Licht to do right by Bucs fans and be bold and nab Johnny Football.

Yes, Johnny Football has his legion of haters, and Joe frankly just cannot grasp why. And people trying to link him with Tim Tebow is outrageous. Tebow couldn’t throw the ball; Johnny Football can. The only common theme between Johnny Football and Tebow is that both won a Heisman Trophy.

Last week the New York Times rehashed the sordid Jameis Winston details about an alleged rape in Jan. 2013. Prosecutors couldn’t dig up enough evidence to charge Winston. Out of curiosity, Joe decided to listen to a podcast of “The Jeff Cameron Show,” heard on WTSM-FM 97.9 in Tallahassee, to listen to Cameron’s take on the new story with old facts.

Unlike most big shots in a college town, Cameron is not a hack. In fact, the guy is damned good. The Lakewood High School football product has carved out a helluva gig in the panhandle and Joe very much respects his research and attention to detail. He has a very good show.

Now after the Winston discussion, Cameron’s sidekick brought up the possibility of Johnny Football playing for the Bucs. Let it be known Cameron and his sidekick are avowed Johnny Football haters. They reacted to the notion of Johnny Football being drafted by the Bucs (both are Bucs fans) the way Yosemite Sam reacted whenever he was outwitted by Bugs Bunny; head shaking wildly back and forth, jumping up and down, yelling, “EEEEEEWWWWWW!” and firing off pistols.

One thing Cameron said about Johnny Football stuck with Joe; he dismissed Johnny Football’s carving of Nick Saban’s defenses claiming Saban always has trouble with spread offenses. Sounds like a bit of a reach of an excuse to Joe (remember, Saban had an entire offseason to craft a defense to stop Johnny Football in Round 2, and he still got torched by Johnny Football), but OK, fair point. Joe respects Cameron. Joe just wishes he had the chance to ask Cameron if he had a reason/dismissal why Bob Stoops’ defense was dismantled by Johnny Football as he racked up 516 yards of offense on the Sooners, but OK.

Now last year, even Joe will admit the best quarterback in college football was Winston. Joe suspects Cameron would agree. Winston is damned near the complete package: Big, can move, can take a hit, has a cannon for an arm, is lethally accurate and the dude simply does not get rattled. If Winston were eligible, Joe would be wearing out rosaries in an effort for the Bucs to some how, some way trade up and grab Winston.

Thanks to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s saving of college football, Winston is not eligible for the draft for at least another year.

So this got Joe to thinking…

Last year, Texas A&M and Florida State had two common opponents: Auburn and Duke. So Joe decided to see how Johnny Football fared compared to the best college quarterback in the land, Winston.

Against Auburn, Johnny Football completed 28 of 38 passes for 454 yards, four touchdowns and two picks. Winston completed 20 of 35 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns without a pick in the national championship win. Advantage: Johnny Football (and yes, Joe knows Auburn was stealing offensive signals from Florida State).

Against Duke, Johnny Football had one of his signature games, putting the Aggies square on his shoulders and carrying the team, rallying from a 28-point deficit in the second half to win the Chicken Bowl. Johnny Football completed 30 of 38 passes for 382 yards and four touchdowns without a pick. Winston, facing Duke in the ACC Championship, completed 19 passes in 32 attempts for 330 yards with three touchdowns and two picks. Advantage: Johnny Football.

So facing common opponents when stacked up against who Joe believes was the best quarterback in college football, Johnny Football put up better numbers.

Cue the Johnny Football haters in three… two… go!

Joe I respect and appreciate what you do but…. ENOUGH WITH THE JF STUFF ALREADY!!!! It’s actually pathetic and I am beginning to think you really don’t have a life outside of the articles you write.

  2. bucrightoff Says:

2 more weeks and the Johnny articles are (God willing) dead forever. Joe will need some tissues when its over (to wipe his nose this time rather than…well…)

  3. RastaMon Says:

Johnny doesn’t have to drug/date rape his women….that is one diffence

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    Let the rape comments begin.

  5. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Here come the rape trolls

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Keep them coming about Manziel, Joe. I like seeing people complain that you are exercising your right as the owner of this website.

  7. deminion Says:

    Winston is a surgeon

  8. lightningbuc Says:

I like how Joe gives John Manziel the advantage in the Auburn game, despite John “leading” (similar to how Glennon led the Bucs offense) A&M to defeat.

  9. phil Says:

We need to draft Johnny Football this year unless we are planning on going 0-16 this year so we can get Winston next year but we have to get a quarterback soon.

  10. Nick H Says:

Please just… neither of them for the love of god

  11. Joe Says:

    lightningbuc:

The Bucs had a halfway decent defense last year (look it up).

Texas A&M defense was a flat-out embarrassment. Oh, and losing to the No. 2 team by four points in the nation isn’t exactly a crime.

  12. Joe Says:

so we can get Winston next year but we have to get a quarterback soon

Winston swears he is staying for his junior year. Not sure Joe believes that but if he does it is clear he is going to leverage NFL owners with the threat of playing baseball, which is smart. He may just be better off playing baseball. More cash and you don’t get beat up. There are garbage pitchers making as much as Aaron Rodgers.

  13. SAMCRO Says:

That’s the kind of sh|t that really pisses me off. You don’t speak for all of us. I’m so sick of the media controlling how our team operates. The media is why we don’t have Gruden anymore. The media is the reason why we keep going through regime changes becauses people like JOE try to run things, and if they don’t like it they will create controversy until they get it there way. Stay out of Licht’s ear …you don’t speak for the rest of us.

  14. Nick H Says:

Winston is a surgeon? Oh god this is absolute football hell.

Hype trains die fast and hard when the NFL defenses come around. I can’t wait for these 2 trains to come crashing to a halt when reality strikes.

  15. Theodore Says:

And in the end the Bucs are going to draft an O lineman. Because Lovie got enough toys on defense during FA and Lovie doesn’t draft QBs high and McCown has no arm for a new, fast 1st round WR anyways.

We’ve been told that Glennon can’t use excuses and close calls. He’s supposed to lead to victory. Same with John.

    LOL

First, Joe writes for Joe, and no one else.

Second, Joe has never heard of the Bucs consulting Woody Cummings, Rick Stroud, Steve Duemig, Paul Porter or Heather Van Nest on personnel moves.

Third, Chucky greased his own wheels out of Tampa with crap draft picks and clashing with Team Glazer. No, the Bucs have never recovered from his departure but it sure as hell wasn’t “the media” who ran him off.

  19. deminion Says:

    @Nick H do u watch football?

  20. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I was at FSU when Chollie was there. I have watched a crap ton of highly ranked and recruited QBs come and go since then. Some excelled but most tanked. But, I can’t think of one QB who has blown my doors off like Winston. He really can do it all, and, he is STILL improving.

I know the writers here have a fixation with the kid from A&M, and I can admit I didn’t watch him nearly as closely as Winston. But, one thing that the Joe’s would be remiss not to mention is how they played within the offense. Winston played in a pro style set, and stuck to it. When a play broke down, he rarely took off to run, but, instead continued looking down field.

To me, that’s the difference (besides size/arm), I think a pro OC (who spends the season sleeping in his office), will be more comfortable with a guy who sticks with the play, even when it breaks down. Manziel is more of a sandlot guy.

If Winston were going pro now, he is the one guy I would say “TRADE UP” for. And I NEVER say that.

  21. SAMCRO Says:

    @Oil Derrick Brooks

Exactly, if Winston comes out next year he will be next years Andrew Luck. We can then bet the farm and trade up (assuming we’re not the first pick) on a bonafide 1st round top 10 selection.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

If Winston declares himself for the draft. He goes number 1 overall. That is of course after he leads his team to back to back championships and wins back to back Heisman’s. He’s not a “project” QB. He’s a slam dunk.

  23. Theodore Says:

Joe – Must be nice to know that fans of the site think you have enough pull to influence Team Glazer, Licht and Lovie :)

I can see them now in the war room, on the clock, frantically refreshing their browser, waiting for you to comment on who they should pick…

  24. Joe Says:

    Theodore:

    LOL :)

If Winston declares himself for the draft. He goes number 1 overall. That is of course after he leads his team to back to back championships and wins back to back Heisman’s. He’s not a “project” QB. He’s a slam dunk.

Only thing Joe has heard negatively about Winston’s football skills is he has a Leftwich-like delivery.

  26. mpmalloy Says:

    EEEEWWW I hates Johnny Football!

  27. deminion Says:

@Joe yes i have heard his delivery is super slow ima have to look at the tape

  28. Buc1987 Says:

LOL@Theodore…if this team listened to the media, they’d really be even more screwed than they are now.lol

  29. bucrightoff Says:

If the Bucs listened to the media Josh Freeman would just be starting year 1 of his 5 year extension….jesus we’d be effed beyond belief.

  30. lightningbuc Says:

    bucrightoff,

In Joe’s defense, the contract he wanted the Bucs to give JFro was a “team friendly” one – whatever that means.

    Joe Knows QBs

  31. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Team friendly would have been, what, 8-9 million a year, right?

  32. Couch Fan Says:

But yet we over spent on McCown’s 5mil.

  33. WalkdaPlank Says:

    lol screw Auburn Joe.

  34. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

@theodore. well played sir!! love it

As far as Winston goes. He would be crazy to turn down guaranteed contracts and not getting hit by 275 lb freaks of nature. Baseball is his best option. That said, I would be so stoked to get him as our QB. He is the truth. But we would have to trade atleast 2 1st, a 2nd, and atleast another 3rd minimum to have a chance to get him. I would much rather have Carr this year and all those other draft picks.

  35. WalkdaPlank Says:

Careful @1987. Joe was spouting the same stuff about back to back Heisman’s for Mancrush. We all know how that turned out. ;)

  36. lightningbuc Says:

    @ODB,

I think “team friendly” would have been about 6 million/year, but loaded with incentives such as $500K if Josh could muster the strength to get out of bed and make it to the team photo on time.

  37. tiny tim Says:

And this is another reason why some of you need to stop taking Joe seriously because he obviously has very little clue of what he is talking about. There is not one scout in America that would put JF and Jameis in the same catagory. By all accounts, if winston came out this year, he would be the bonafide #1 pick (over clowney and whoever). Its not even close and you have this author who is obviously in love with JF comparing the two. Absolutely hillarious and a shame all at the same time.

  38. Kalind Says:

Hahah Joe, that’s red meat for your readers there hahah. You even said Winston is a sure thing. A lock. ESP to go no.1 Johnny could slip past the Bucs at 7.

I’m all for drafting J.Football, but that’s advantage Winston. He’s just better. Don’t compare Guys to Jameis. It’s not fair to other QBs.

  39. Joe Says:

    Kalind:

Never wrote Winston is a lock. Wrote that he is the best quarterback in college with rare skills. Why not compare? If Johnny Football is the antiChrist as some would have you believe, how come he put up better numbers than Winston against common opponents? Perhaps Johnny Football isn’t Lucifer as the haters want people to believe?

A rotten quarterback wouldn’t have better numbers than the best quarterback in college, would he?

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    WalkdaPlank…lol barring injury….

  41. Buc1987 Says:

“A rotten quarterback wouldn’t have better numbers than the best quarterback in college, would he?”

Damn good point Joe. I can’t argue with ya there. The SEC is a bear and many predicted when A&M joined them that they would get rolled over. Johnny was the equalizer. Damn I love college football more than the pros.

  42. lightningbuc Says:

how come he put up better numbers than Winston against common opponents?

    _________

Comparing the Duke games is like comparing apples to oranges – silly. FSU was ahead 38-0 after 3 quarters, hence they didn’t throw the ball in the 4th. John had to overcome a huge deficit and was throwing on every down, so of course his numbers are bigger than Winston’s. Winston “led” his team to victory over both common opponents, something John was unable to do.

  43. WalkdaPlank Says:

@lightning – wins don’t matter unless we are talking about Glennon. ;)

  44. hjbashus Says:

I say we take Mariota next year…if we don’t have a high enough pick to get him then we move up. Kid is a stud.

  45. lightningbuc Says:

    walkdaplank,

    You got that right!

  46. Joe Says:

John had to overcome a huge deficit and was throwing on every down, so of course his numbers are bigger than Winston’s. Winston “led” his team to victory over both common opponents, something John was unable to do.

Um, Johnny beat Duke. And overcoming that 28-point deficit is nothing? Lost by four to the No. 2 team in the nation. SOB ought to be horsewhipped!

If FSU had the sieve of a defense Texas A&M had, they wouldn’t have won the ACC. But, a quarterback overcoming that far more often than not, he’s a maggot?

For every hater line you have about Johnny Football, Joe has a comeback. :)

  47. Harry Says:

    @Lightning;

What game was it that Glennon had 454 yards passing, I think I missed it. If you add two back-to-back games of Glennon’s together, he had about that many yards ONCE if you add up the two scores of DET then ATL.

  48. lightningbuc Says:

    Joe,

I don’t hate John Manziel. I think he’ll make a fine NFL backup.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

@lightningbuc…lmao and think you could be right. Doug Flutie rode the pine a lot in his career too.

  50. lightningbuc Says:

What game was it that Glennon had 454 yards passing, I think I missed it.

    _____

    Harry,

Since we are talking about college football, Glennon actually had games of 440 and 467 yards passing his final year of college. So, there you have it since you missed it.

  51. tiny tim Says:

Again I say show me a scout in America that would put Johnny and Jameis in the same sentence and I will bet that said scout is the author of his own website. This is getting even more hillarious as the comments keep coming in. And some of you actually think that Johnny is in the same catagory as Jameis. I don’t know if you are brown nosing Joe or if you are just as clueless on this matter. Unbelievable.

  55. Phillip Says:

    @Joe

I am all for getting Johnny to the Bucs… but I don’t think I want to be around this site if/when we draft him and no not because of the articles you could do(I enjoy every article about the BUCS except for the Pro Schiano one lol) but because of the hot garbage some people on here would be spewing.. I mean imagine it now…

Joe you influenced the Bucs to pick Johnny you are expletive expletive!
Joe I’m never coming back to your site again blah blah blah…
Joe Glennon is still better and will be the starter come week 1!!
    Joe hates Glennon
Joe atleast we got rid of MW19

You know it actually wouldn’t be any different than it is now lol

    ______________________________________________________

So let me get this straight. Not believing Johnny is going to be great is akin to believing he is the anti-Christ? Or Lucifer? Perhaps its time to ease up a bit on the hyperbole there Joe. There have been tons of legitimate arguments against Manziel. Few, if any, have gone after him personally. But if you don’t like him, it’s cause you think he’s the anti-Christ?

    Only two more weeks thankfully…

  58. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

“For every hater line you have about Johnny Football, Joe has a comeback. :)”

And, if he tanks in the NFL, I know you will take your medicine like a man.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

I guarantee that we have not heard the last from Robert6. He’s come and gone a few times. Even under names like Sharon. Poor Robert he’s been a Glennon supporter since the day he was drafted. The Freemanites (me being one of them) we’re very rough on him last summer.

I remember him getting very upset with me over bashing Glennon and him talking about not even wanting to come to the site because of it.

He’ll be back, if he’s not already.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

LOL the anti-christ and lucifer. Joe really IS in love with this guy. Perhaps infatuated at the very least. It’s not healthy Joe. Oh draft please get here quickly.

  61. Buc the Haters Says:

Fyi: Winston already said that he is absolutely not coming out after next season. NFL teams are going to have to wait til the 2016 to draft him. Sucks, but that’s his decision.

  62. Bfal921 Says:

If we don’t draft Manziel this year it will haunt this team for years to come. He is a rare talent that doesn’t come around that often. And if he does suck then we will be in perfect position to draft Winston or Mariota. Win win

  63. Larry Says:

    Joe,

Love the JF articles. Keep em coming!!

Count me in for JF in round one if available. If not, Mack would be second choice and if neither is available, trade back for extra picks.

  64. Joe Says:

I don’t hate John Manziel. I think he’ll make a fine NFL backup.

    LOL :)

  65. zam Says:

no one will argue JF wasn’t a great college football player. (So was Doug Flutie.)

    Here’s the case against:
    - Poor throwing mechanics
    - inability to strike 10-15yd middle balls well
    - undersize
    - propensity to run but w/o Wilson/Kaepernick let alone Vick speed

His off-the-field celeb status, while not necessarily hurtful, is certainly not helpful.

  66. Adrian Says:

    Draft Manziel Bucs!!

  67. Bucsfanman Says:

Joe- I’m glad you clarified on the comparisons. In all this draft talk, people forget that football is a team sport. I don’t think there are many who think that A&M had a better team than FSU.

  68. Espo Says:

Can we stop arguing about this in a month? No I told you sos. No shoulda coulda woulda. And always remember the 11th commandment,Thou shall not covet thy opponent’s quarterback, since hopefully he goes to ruin some other franchise.

Maybe decide by which one we’ll have a remote chance at in the draft ???!!!! (Not the baseball player, I guess).

  81. WalkdaPlank Says:

@Eric – I don’t know about you, but I would take Mike Evans over Kelvin Benjamin any day. A&M’s O-line was not too shabby either, especially with the services of Jake Matthews. The only standout advantage in Winston’s offense was James Wilder Jr. Not to say FSU’s offense or Benjamin were bad, they won a title. But IMO Johnny Boy had a better supporting cast, at least on offense.

Put him on the Noles and he probably scores less lol.

  82. Buc1987 Says:

I figured it out. Joe is infatuated with Manziel and Eric is in love.

HA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha……..ha.

    Ha!

  83. PRBucFan Says:

  84. SeanyMac in SC Says:

  85. Buc1987 Says:

I think I might have pissed my pants.

  86. Buc1987 Says:

SeanyMac in SC …be careful with that we might still get updates, only now he will be called the QB the Bucs should have drafted in his articles. I sure his mind is already churning about it.

  87. Ghost Says:

Comparing JF to Winston is like comparing a Kia to a Ferrari.

  88. Buc1987 Says:

It’s really not fair for me to judge though. Me being a fan of the National Champion Florida State Semi-NOLES! That’s right Go Noles beotchs, and by beotchs I mean you Gator fans. See ya next year for another Famous Jameis beat down. Canes too, oh yes Canes too. You’ll be placed on the tee and driven like fricken golf ball. The way Jameis has been talking he might be there for another 2 more seasons. Oh oh oh it’s great to be a Seminoh!

But na na na there is no bias in me. Ghost you nailed it on the money.

I’ll just go with it’s like comparing Popov vodka to Grey Goose.

    We Doin’ It Big!

  89. Eric Says:

I wasn’t trying to be funny, but glad to oblige.

I’m a Nole fan and Alum but Winston didn’t face the defenses JF did, and when it got to Auburn he struggled mightily.

Against ACC competition with the Noles offense they might very well come close to 100 with JF.

    Quicker release, faster, better scrambler.

Let me put it this way, put Winston on A&M against that schedule I don’t see a Heisman.

All that said I’d love Winston in Pewter too. But I think Johnny will be a better pro.

    @Eric,
    Love it!

  91. Harry Says:

    @Lightning,
Thank you. I feel the same way. You are always respectful and I appreciate it. Busting ball is expected, lol

“Let me put it this way, put Winston on A&M against that schedule I don’t see a Heisman.”

Eric…Well then once again we disagree, because I say he would win it. If you’re lil midget can win it at A&M Winston most definitely could win it as well.

  93. Buc1987 Says:

He might not score 100 points a game though…

  94. Joe Says:

he will be called the QB the Bucs should have drafted in his articles. I sure his mind is already churning about it.

    Good idea!

  95. Joe Says:

The only standout advantage in Winston’s offense was James Wilder Jr. Not to say FSU’s offense or Benjamin were bad, they won a title. But IMO Johnny Boy had a better supporting cast, at least on offense.

The Aggies had little to no run game to speak of. So the only element defenses had to worry about was Johnny, and he still racked up crazy numbers (see: Saban, Nick (twice); Stoops, Bob., etc.

FSU had a far better running game than aTm and frankly, better receivers. Yeah, Evans is a beast but FSU’s top three receivers will be collecting checks to play before they are finished.

aTm had a slightly better o-line.

  96. WalkdaPlank Says:

Aaron Murray threw for 415 yards, 4 total TD’s (2 passing 2 rushing), over 65% comp. and only one pick against the same Auburn defense. Does that make him better than the 2 Heisman winners? No. Not all offenses are the same. It’s practically apples and oranges unless they all worked with the same offense.

  97. PRBucFan Says:

Again Johnny couldn’t hold Winston’s Jockstrap

And I hate the noles lol

  98. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

“FSU had a far better running game than aTm and frankly, better receivers.”

This. Wilder jr was the third best running back on that team. And I will give you Evans overall, but, Joe is right about all three WRs playing in the league. I know aTm has lineman, but, the entire FSU linemen will be drafted eventually. So will TE O’Leary.

As far as the Auburn game goes , it’s a little easier to defend Winston when you know what play is coming. It was a much different game after the towels came out (to mask the play calls from getting stolen by Craig).
