Next Week’s Practices Can Alter The Draft

April 19th, 2014

johnthan banks 0828What if Lovie Smith is unimpressed by Johnthan Banks when he finally sees him on the practice fields of One Buc Palace next week?

Suppose coaches are wowed in drills by healthy, hungry returns of DaQuan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn?

And if Eric Page has the dropsies?

The Lovie regime finally gets on the practice field Tuesday after two weeks of classroom work with players. League labor rules prohibited anything but film study and conditioning since players arrived April 7 for the 2014 season.

Yes, “practices” next week are basically touch football in underwear, but there’s still plenty to see, especially from certain positions. These long sessions can surely impact a team’s direction on Day 3, if not Day 2, of the NFL Draft.

For example, Joe and fans can speculate all day long about the Bucs drafting two receivers, but the urgency (and rounds) of those potential moves could change based on what is seen in Lovie’s “voluntary minicamp,” April 22-24. A new regime will scrutinize the roster in April far more than a returning one.

Heck, even Mike Glennon could be flawless and fluid, and run Jeff Tedford’s mysterious offense like a seasoned veteran Pro Bowler.

Of course, Joe will be watching every minute of practice and will keep you informed.

Joe your site is making it impossible for me to use my iphone . Redirects every 10 seconds

Intermittent, annoying, persistent issue for only some mobile readers. Joe is working on this problem. Joe does not make money off this harmless glitch. –Joe

I doubt that you (press) will see any of Tedfords’ offense. They will just run basic plays to see if receivers/RBs can run correct patterns and catch easy throws (no defender knocking their lights out). The O-linemen will be expected to block the correct man and pick up blitzes, based on the play/D-formation.
It will still be a chance for camp-fodder players to get noticed and new FAs to make the staff feel better about signing them.

    WRONGO!

Smith and Tedford would be complete fools if they didn’t utilize every second possible to be able to install and run their schemes with players that desperately need to learn them ASAP.

Candy blast mania again sure wish I could read the gmc story this morning. Guess I will play candy blast or dragon city instead thanks joe

The complaints won’t change anything, men. Joe is working on this intermittent issue for some mobile-only users. Joe doesn’t make money on any of these redirect glitches. Thanks for your patronage. –Joe

Get rid of ur iPhone. Get android never any issues. HTC one

  6. biff barker Says:

Joe, doesn’t the CBA allow the Bucs a little extra practice time given the new coach? I hope so. Last year’s 0-8 start pushed brewing companies stock higher.

Yes, an extra two weeks is given. –Joe

  7. Lou. Says:

Look, Joe is not going to go insane and overreact to a problem he is working on. And, frankly, please don’t accuse Joe of misrepresentation.

Joe knows exactly how many of his readers are mobile, tablet or desktop/laptop. And Joe knows how intermittent this issue is for some mobile users, down to the day and hour it most often occurs. Based on your comments, you’d be very surprised by that data. Thanks for your patronage as Joe works on the issue. –Joe

  8. Jeffobrien Says:

Dude, this isn’t your personal complaint department. Understand this is an intermittent issue for some mobile readers, deal, or go to Pewter Report as you said you were doing earlier. Joe would refund your money, but you aren’t paying anything.-Joe

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No matter what practice shows and for whom…..we need at least one/possibly two WRs……

  10. Macabee Says:

    Biff,

The Bucs are allowed to conduct this extra, pre-draft mini-camp because they hired a new head coach this offseason. The pre-draft mini-camp is mostly meant to allow Lovie Smith and his coordinators to install their schemes and familiarize themselves with players on the practice field.

Because of CBA restrictions, there isn’t much that can be determined that they don’t already know physically about most players. And as you know, there is no Mike Williams replacement there, so no miraculous discoveries are going to be made.

Nevertheless, it is a 3 day opportunity to get an extra looksee that most other teams will not get!

Joe forgot to add the complaint department phone number 1-888-WAH-WAHH.

Great retort Joe. Found out years ago that if you give people something for nothing, too often that’s the value they place on it.

Good article joe, never really put it in that perspective, I guess it’s a good thing to have some workouts before the draft, so we can really identify our needs, still hope we go receiver and a qb in the first two rounds, in no particular order because I think there will be quality players at each position in both rounds

Thanks. Not exactly the dreaded Ray Perkins 3 a day camps, but any extra time is a bonus. We simply were not ready last year.

  15. brandonbucfan Says:

The one thing I am sure L&L will surely be keeping an eye on in Tim Wright. IF Tedford can figure out how to use him it may negate our need for a high ranking 2nd WR and maybe use it instead as a backup at LB..still not convinced Foster can handle the drops necessary to handle the TB2 NO MATTER WHO is LB coach is. IMO

  16. Buc1987 Says:

brandonbucfan ….but but but Wright is from ( all together now ) Rutgers. Surely he can’t be any good.

I agree… for the time they spend in the classroom, but Lovie, et al, have gone to great lengths to keep the offense a secret. I doubt seriously, if they are going to just whip it out at an unimportant mini-camp that won’t even have all the players/starters (draft picks). I’m guessing (because that is what we are ALL doing) that there will be plenty of classroom time to get the attending players all information they need.
BTW, if Tedfords’ playbook is anything like Grudens’, a three day mini-camp will be just enough time for them to count how many plays they need to learn. :^)
I don’t know if we still disagree, but we should find out soon what’s going to be on the agenda.

For those experiencing redirects try clearing your cache and histories. The point about android vs iphone is interesting. I use android and I only experience the problem maybe twice a month. But I also clear my cache and history twice per week.

Lighten up on joe. The Dragon issue will be fixed. Great article joe.

  21. Fritz50 Says:

Off topic, but not fully an iPhone issue either. Only issue I have is the occasional video starting & running , while I read the article. Good luck with your issues, whatever side of the fence you’re on.

  22. TNBucsFan Says:

On the redirect issue use opera browser “it’s free”. It never redirects and while safari redirects me opera does not.

  23. Kalind Says:

Joe, I’ve noticed the problem as well w my phone. I’d just like to say thank for acknowledging it, and for working on it. A lot of people on here take this site for granted. Thanks for all you’re doing, man. Keep up the good work. And hopefully this annoying but ultimately harmless problem will get fixed.

  24. Sweets Willie Says:

The mystery offense can be seen on you tube. You can watch a weeks worth of Cal Tedford offense highlights. Chip Kelly is running the same plays from Oregon, Tedford will do the same. That is why Lovie hired him. Tedford explained all this after he was hired at his press conference.

  25. Trox Says:

I was hoping to see Page have more opportunities out of the slot last season. He was pretty effective in that role in college and got a few reps at the position before the QB change.

  26. MARK Says:

Hi Joe, just wanted to say “thanks” for providing lots of information on my favorite team.

  27. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

i don’t care what the bucs do in the first three rounds, just as long as they pick up logan thomas/ 6″6 coleman and another linebacker in the later rounds. I don’t think a tight end or qb is necessary in this draft except fore the a fore mentioned logan thomas.

If they could trade down and go cb, O-line, DE (from stanford preferably) in the first three rounds I would be cool with that. As a new fan I can say that I am not sold on your starting runningback and would trade him, glennon, and vincent jackson for future high draft picks along with picks this year. let the team learn the systems and build a solid foundation and next years class will just fall in line with the seasoned group. NO window is closed, ATL will be a joke (bad o-line and no defense/running game), and carolina will have fired their coach cut their runningbacks leaving tampa bay to own the division for 3 to 4 years.
