Gruden: Coaching Will Make Johnny Football

Father Dungy, longtime mentor and friend of Lovie Smith, already has expressed his faith in Johnny Football.
Now Bucs icon Chucky is taking his Johnny Football love a step further than his usual I-love-everybody rhetoric. Chucky, as chronicled by NFL.com, is all but guaranteeing Johnny Football’s success if he gets strong coaching.
That came on the heels of Chucky drooling over Johnny Football’s risk-taking, as well as Chucky’s glowing impressions when he spent time with Johnny Football for his made-for-TV quarterbacks camp on BSPN.
“If you get him with a quarterback coach or anybody that aspires to be a quarterback coach and spend the time teaching this kid NFL defenses and your system, I can’t imagine Johnny not being successful,” Gruden said.
Those are strong words even for Chucky, who always must be taken with a big grain of salt — or earplugs when he’s doing a live game broadcast.)
If fans want to buy in to Chucky’s mindset, the Bucs are in perfect position to groom Johnny Football, given the presence of quarterbacks guru Jeff Tedford and his trusty sidekick, QB coach Marcus Arroyo. Both of them are former quarterbacks and obsessed with the position.
Joe doubts the Bucs will have a shot to draft Johnny Football, but Joe believes the position still needs to be addressed in a big way. The fantasy of Mike Glennon or Josh McCown hoisting the Lombardi trophy is too great a fantasy for Joe to wrap his head around.

You know the answer, but Joe will answer it anyway. “Doubt” and “no chance” are two different animals. Joe writes about Johnny Football because the Bucs are seriously in need of a quarterback with “franchise” potential, and Joe would like to see the Bucs draft him.. Don’t blame Joe for the Bucs’ need. At least a dozen other NFC teams are very confident in their QB stable. Joe has written about other preferred QB targets, as well. –Joe

The draft needs to be in early February to cut out all this nonsense, and have articles about actual team players. Drafted players would also have more time with their respective playbooks, so that they would be ready (hopefully) when they report to camp.

Funny because Manziel reminds me of Jeff Garcia, whom Gruden coveted for years. Both can excite, win games, and possibly get into the playoffs. The problem is, all that running around and improvising every down won’t beat playoff defenses. Sorry Joe and other Manziel lovers, I just don’t see it working out.

Hawk, Gruden “made” Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson. Both were journey men before Gruden turned them into super bowl qbs. And if by “made,” you mean drafted, then you weren’t paying attention to Chris Simms who was well on his way to success if not for a freak injury. Hell, even Bruce Gradkowski is still in the league’.

I agree with Gruden and Duemig on Freeman. Any small problems Josh had with confidence and time management were exaggerated and exasperated by Schiano trying to trade him in the off season and wanting to bring in his own QB. If he was on our roster today we would not need to draft a QB at all. Josh has never had a drinking or drug problem that is all BS.

Look out for Charles Sims. I think hed fit into the offense like a glove. Tedford always used two backs, usually with one specifically used to catch passes. Sims does this and draws comparisons to Forte on da Bears. He and JF would make for some damn fun football to watch.

Joe…..I know Manziel is possible and that your opinion is that we need a “franchise” QB and that the current stable of QBs is inadequate…..but…..your persistant lobbying for JF is at the least over-the-top and at the most obsessive.
Even the most avid JF supporter would have to agree that the attention given to one “possible” draftee is excessive.

Gruden could never develop a young qb. Hence why he always had a revolving door. He took vets and made them better but forget about the younger guys.
The joes don’t wanna hear what Johnny lacks to succeed as an nfl qb. They see the exciting plays of him running around dogging tacklers when it’s all unnecessary when he fails to see open reads. If you think Manziel can play like that in the nfl when guys are much bigger and stronger, you’re mistaken.
Jimmy Garoppolo is the qb that fits this offense. He’s a stud that no one talks about yet os the most accurate, good arm, and he sees the field exceptionally well. Quick decision maker. Has that Drew Brees “quick twitch” ability trait to see and process reads and coverages at a rapid pace. That release is the best in the draft. But he played at a small school. He lifted the level of play of his wrs and absolutely dominated.

Seriously….Gru loves every single qb he watches….for that matter he loves every player….have you watched Monday Night Football “This guy is an absolute stud, I once saw him walk into a stadium and throw the ball through the uprights from the opposite goal line” – Gru is embarrassing in his gushing over QB’s

I don’t see how Tedford can be considered a “guru”. You say you can’t hold the NFL failures against him because once they left he had no control over them.
Well, the same could be said of the successes. Once they left he shouldn’t get credit for what they succeeded in.
Especially when they attend annual QB camps because they needed to get better.

It would be interesting if Joe could actually spend a little more time talking about other players/positions that could help this team. This Manziel/QB obsession was old a few months ago. Can the Joes spend a little more time on WR and OL? Maybe a little more in depth on players we could see them draft over the course of 7 rounds? Would give you a little credibility as opposed to your dishing the daily bullsh1t.

Connor Shaw was benched his first 3 seasons at South Carolina and only completed his Senior season without getting benched for a game or two… Not injury but actually BENCHED… Mediocre QB’s in College don’t normally transfer well into the NFL… No thanks

My slant is ,if you dont take chances on players ( Calvin Johnson ) who by the way the number 1 and two number 2s that Gruden wanted to give up to move up to draft Johnson are all gone from the team. So nothing ventured nothing gained. So take a chance on a player like Manziel ,we might hit the jack pot !!!!!!!

The guy makes a valid point. Johnny, hell any QB, needs strong coaching to be successful.
@Chris- I don’t understand how you can say that Garropolo will be any more successful than Johnny and neither one of them have played snap #1 in the NFL. I’m not arguing for drafting Manziel but your argument doesn’t hold a lot of weight when you look at the schools and conferences and level of competition each played.
I think too many people here are taking this “Manziel fatigue” to heart. They’re just opinions guys, lighten up.

But yes I agree with upgrading the QB position because we are in a position to do so this year… People have become spoiled thinking we should only take a QB in the 1st round if he’s comparable to Andrew Luck when most years there isn’t and almost all other 1st round QB’s have some major flaw that needed to be addressed… If we wait till next year that means we will have to trade more to move up because I don’t expect us to be drafting in the top 10…
List of successful starting QB’s in the NFL
Rivers, Cutler, Roethlisberger, Stafford, Ryan, Smith, RGIII, Luck, Newton, Manning, Manning, Palmer, Tannehill, Flacco, and Rodgers were ALL 1st round picks compared to the non first round picks…
Brady(6th) Romo(UDFA) Brees(1st pick in the 2nd round) Wilson(First round grade 3rd round height) Kap(4th pick in the 2nd round) Dalton(3rd pick in the 2nd round) Foles(3rd)
Ya there are duds in the first but there are plenty more duds in the 2nd-5th rounds… I’ll take my chances with an elite prospect any day over the mediocre prospect…

You have to understand to be a true Bucs fan you have to hate Jon Gruden and be glad he was run out of town in favor of Raheem Morris.
It’s a mental disorder of sorts.
I’d hate to see how Bucs “fans” would react to Jon if he hadn’t delivered the Championship to Tampa (yeah, yeah he had nothing to do with it).
In this instance, as usual, Chucky is spot on.
Let our QB Guru have a QB for goodness sake. Otherwise, why bother with a QB guru?

I don’t believe that anyone can call him a ‘Guru’ because of the QBs in the NFL. But, while he was a COLLEGE coach he was turning out an impressive string of outstanding COLLEGE QBs. So, he does seem to fit the description of a COLLEGE QB Guru. Let’s hope he can duplicate the process in the NFL since he is now an NFL coach.
