“Fill-In Guys” Are “Absolutely Not” No. 2 WRs

Lavelle Hawkins a Bucs WR?

Lavelle Hawkins and the current receiving corps doesn’t have many jumping with joy

Former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, who now works on the Buccaneers Radio Network, ESPN and for other media, seems to be missing the “true complement” a receiver like Mike Williams offered Vincent Jackson and the Bucs offense.

Replacing Williams has got to be a priority in next month’s draft, Becht explained on the Ron and Ian show today.Becht said Jackson remains a good No. 1 receiver but could benefit from a guy like Williams and/or someone that can offset Jackson’s lack of speed.

The No. 2 receiver is absolutely not Louis Murphy or any other receiver currently on the roster, Becht said, and the Bucs have to dive into the draft head first at that position. He called the crew on the depth chart after Jackson “fill-in guys.”

In the draft, Becht identified Khalil Mack and Sammy Watkins as his first two choices, and if they’re unavailable, then he’d be looking at an offensive lineman and other receivers.

Becht had plenty to say, and you can hear the full audio below. He gives the Bucs an “A+ on paper” for their offseason moves but he remains very skeptical of Jeff Tedford and the offense.

If we don’t draft a first round receiver I don’t know what I’ll do. I don’t think I wanna go all the way to florida to watch Johnny ManBoy scramble every down praying VJax or one of those bums to get open.

  2. B.J. Rassam Says:

Anthony Becht knows what he is talking about – agree with him wholeheartedly.

  3. JerseyBucsFan Says:

Wouldn’t be upset if we if we go WR in the first as long as Jonny isnt on the board or Jimmy garoppolo in the next round. heard he had a visit today

  4. JGM 2.0 Says:

Cody Latimer is the flavor of the week, but if you really read up on this guy he looks legit. He is 6’3 215 and runs 4.40. He averaged 15+ yards per reception for INDIANA!!! in the B1G!!! Pretty impressive. Rumor is this guy is sneaking into the 1st round. I’d bet after the hysteria dies down he could be had with the Bucs 2nd round pick. Let’s go boys.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Could be another reason why Williams became expendable. The Bucs might think Watkins or Evans will be available at 7. I think Watkins will be gone so maybe it’s Evans. or Trade down and pick up a damn good WR late in the first round. I don’t think Evans will make it past the first 10 picks.

What is it now 30 more days until the draft? I can’t wait.

  6. kevin Says:

Id like evans at seven. If hes not there which would suck then Ol and receiver in second. We need at least two wr from this draft unless its so deep that they think there will be undrafted guys with upside but it would be nice to have a couple more 6 2 or taller wrs on the roster

  7. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Evans @7

  8. JGM 2.0 Says:

Cody Latimer. 6’3 215 4.40 15+ ypc for team w/ subpar qb in the B1G!.

  9. JGM 2.0 Says:

Trade down in 1st as much as possible. Try to get Latimer around 25-30. Then get a G and Garoppolo in the 2nd.

  10. deminion Says:

the more i watch evans im kinda leaning more for evans that sammy dude looks like a monster

  11. Northend Says:

We could miss out on Watkins and Evans and still come away with 2 absolute stud receivers in the first 3 rounds.
Adams(IMO top 3 WR in draft)
    Crooks
    Robinson
    Odell Jr
    Landry
    Benjamin
That’s just scratching the depth.Adams was #1 in top WR categories in D1 last year.Watch his highlights,Dude is 100% real deal

  12. Northend Says:

FYI-Carr is dropping dimes on this kid.Dude has great ball placement

  13. Barry Says:

MG8 did it with only 1 WR.

  14. JGM 2.0 Says:

    CODY LATIMER

  15. phattitudes Says:

Is this big news? Of course they going to grab a Starting Receiver. Hopefully they take full advantage of the draft depth and also get a Slot Receiver. The one position that needs attention before the draft is Left Guard. We need to grab Wharton in free agency. He was the 6th ranked guard last year. That would solidify the right side of our O-Line. The left side could be OK or could have issues depending on how well Nicks comes back and how Collins holds up. Putting the Line (starters) to bed prior to the draft would enable us to focus on WR(s) and QB in their early round picks. The remaining needs are primarily for depth in the O-Line, D-Line and LB. Picking up Wharton is key. So far so good.

  16. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I really enjoy Anthony Becht’s analysis. But really.

“Replacing Williams has got to be a priority in next month’s draft,”

Isn’t that stating the obvious? Didn’t the Bucs really NEED a good WR even if they kept MW? Has anybody given any thought to what a torn hamstring on an already slow WR means?

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BTW Here’s an interesting thought. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a receiver who could actually get a little separation?

We haven’t had once since Joey Galloway. I’d just once like to see an OPEN receiver. These back shoulder fades are nice…IF the Q.B. is spot on.

I miss the old days when rubber armed Jeff Garcia was under throwing wide open receivers down the field. No not Jeff’s rubber band arm..but a receiver who actually got open!

  18. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

trade down and get as many picks as you can then draft c.j. Mosley, Martavias Bryant, A.j. McCarron, Coleman at WR, the 6″8 OT, and a guard in any order. I’m a wannabe G.M. and I can see all of these picks being available if we draft well.

  19. oldfart44 Says:

Not worried; cuts will be available. I would rather have a proven, experienced player than a draft choice. In the draft my preferences are still linemen on either side of the ball.

I would be surprised if we made the playoffs, but anything will be better than the past year with that loser college coach.

We need a QB for the future; not Glennon.

  20. Hawk Says:

Since Joe has left ‘the dark side’ and embraced Glennon (TWO recent positive articles for Glennon to ZERO Johnny Gazelle articles), I’ll have to take up the slack by giving ya’ll the pluses to taking #2 (Don’t worry, things will get back to normal so I can go back to being ‘one with the G-force’).
#1. We won’t need any receivers. With Johnny-Boy in the backfield, he can just run around until the defenders are too tired to stand. Then Johnny-Boy, or one of the RBs can, at their leisure, take the ball down the field.
    OR…
#2. During the preseason, the first time an opposing DC sends his boys after McCown/Glennon, Tedord sends Johnny-Boy in to run them ragged. With that game film in mind, any time, during the regular season, the defensive rush gets too heavy, Tedford can strike fear into the opponents’ DC by just having Johnny-Boy start warm up in plain sight of the opposing bench.

  21. Bucfan#37 Says:

@Northend… Adams did look like a real good receiver on that youtube video. I like him.

  22. Ep bucfan Says:

    Santonio Holmes???

  23. Joe Says:

    ZERO Johnny Gazelle articles

The week of May 4, beware. That will be Johnny Football Week. Buckle up, cowboy.

  24. Owlykat Says:

Williams can be replaced with Tim Wright as WR. Our Giants’ TE has great hands too. For deep speed put Murphy, Page, or Demps at slot receiver. Demps can also do everything that Sproles did for Saints. We are already set on Offense; just need OL backups and a Future Franchise QB. On Defense need a MLB and a backup three technique DL. We already have two FBs that can block and run in short yardage. We have a Veteran QB already to carry us. Licht can get us the talent we need in the draft. We are this year’s Chiefs!!!

  25. Bucsfanamongstthebirds Says:

i dont know about evans…feel like we need someone with some speed opposite the big fella (V Jax).

  26. Bucsfanamongstthebirds Says:

but i will say, if Kelvin Benjamin slides to the 3rd or past….thats a BEAST!!!! 6’5 240!?! We could turn him into a tackle if he packed on some weight. Jimminy Christmas!

  27. BucNasty!!! Says:

I’ll go 1 better Evans n the 1st and Kelvin Benjamin n the second double up and we are set at receiver for the foreseeable future and that’s after v jax looses a step shifts y o the sk an is eventually released 4 years from now. If we put that kinda help around him he can easily still remain productive n his later years similar to Steve smith. Make it happen Licht
