Bucs Sign Major Wright, Hope To Revive Him

April 4th, 2014

Now, per Joe’s unofficial count, that’s 15 new free agents the Bucs have signed since the ringing of the free agency dinner bell in March.

The latest, though, won’t have Joe dreaming of Super Bowls tonight.

This evening, per NFL Network, the Bucs added veteran Bears safety Major Wright, the 25-year-old former Gator who spent four years with the Bears. His best season, 2012, was under the tutelage came under Lovie Smith.

However, Wright was bad last season. Here’s a summary of Joe’s research into Wright. It’s not pretty. And that wasn’t even all of Joe’s research.

But Wright is re-united with Lovie, and he’s surely solid depth for training camp. Maybe much more. Joe’s not going to quibble with the judgment of Lovie when it comes to his ex-Bears.

So Joe will smile tonight, even if Wright conjures thoughts of Sabby The Goat.

Amazing how fans raise no fuss over a bunch of Bears players, but raised plenty if Schiano signed a Rutgers player.

  2. gatrbuc17 Says:

Love havin another Gator on the team. Only 25 yrs old. Lots to learn

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Bonzi bears are an nfl team Rutgers a mid level college team in a weak conference with a weak schedule I can’t understand how that can be compared. Are you saying bear players are equivalent to mid level college team. Please enlighten us how you evaluate the 2. Very curious

  4. biff barker Says:

Lovie know’s CB’s but I’m more concerned about WR for now.

  5. Patrickbucs Says:

Was a very good safety for a few years under Lovie via UF. In terms if value to the Bucs IMO: 1 excellent depth at position, 2:Goldson time to reduce your salary my friend. He’s not a plug in guy for an All Pro though.

  6. Eric Says:

    Hmmmm Chicago Bears……Rutgers…..Chicago Bears…..Rutgers.

Oh what could possibly be the difference.

  7. WalkdaPlank Says:

I like the signing. If Lovie can re-coach him up, that light a huge fire under the Hawk.

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @tmaxcon

    I agree

  9. Macabee Says:

Go Lovie! Go Licht! For anybody that is uncomfortable with all the changes that are being made, you are not witnessing a rebuild. you are witnessing a total re-make of a football team real time. They have looked at this 4-12 team and decided that they do not want it. Are they right? Time will tell. This I do know. This is not a re-hab. This is a whole new House from the ground up! I’m with you til I quit you!

  10. WalkdaPlank Says:

I would take Bears South over the Rutgerneers. Bears are a playoff team.

  11. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Very good signing depth signing

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Macabee

Yeah, they’ve ripped this baby to studs. Can’t wait to see the finish product hit the field

  13. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

I dont think he is there to “to light a fire under the hawk”I think he’s there to motivate mark barron.I have heard no one mention how many times baron was out of position last year, how jimmy graham had an open long td run in the area that barron was supposed to be in but ran up for run support.he would get eat over the top constantly.this is depth, but i feel barron is on notice.

  14. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

    Beat*not eat

  15. Buc1987 Says:

There’s that hope word again Joe.

  16. Kevin Says:

    Lovie will coach him up….

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Very good depth signing-No one’s on notice

  18. Maze Says:

Yeah Damn It! Where the hell are all our Rutgers free agent signings? This is very troubling

  19. WalkdaPlank Says:

I disagree. Goldson is the liability with his contract and his being on Warden Goodell’s Gestapo Wanted List. If Goldson can’t adjust to the new rules he’s gone, which is a shame because I like his “hawk” playstyle but that is outlawed in today’s game. Barron was drafted for good run support, he isn’t known for being a great ballhawk. That’s on Sheridan for misusing terrible zone coverage, which also affected Revis. You just don’t stick a safety like Barron on a guy like Jimmy Graham or Tony Gonzales.

  20. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

I def see where you are coming from,However,I feel you made my arguement for me.Goldson is on warden goodells radar, and his dedication cannot be questioned when he brings in outsiders to retool his tackling.
I also concur that the defense was totally defensive, with stunts that allowed o linemen to get to the linebackers on running plays. They used a cover one pretty much on the back end or a soft zone, and when they did Barron was exposed.
Now in a lovie smith defense,at least from my understanding he uses two deep safeties, with the bend dont break rule to eliminate big plays. But by your own admission,Barron is a run stuffer not a ball hawk,so what use is he in a zone defense if he cannot cover?

  21. 1Gr8Buc Says:

Bonzi……. Just wondering if you have a mad troll with a nasty uti pissing in your Cheerios everyday.

  22. Chris Says:

Joe wright is nothing like Sabby piscatelli. I swear sometimes I think you have zero credibility to write any articles in terms of football opinions. I bet you got po’d when we dealt that scum mike Williams.

  23. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    ^^^ shots fired??

  24. snook Says:

He’s a backup. It’s called depth. No one has a roster with 53 Pro Bowlers.

  25. lurker Says:

dang joe. I need me some manziel articles to offset these defense heavy and/or puzzling moves by the front office.

  26. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

    defense was offensive*

  27. lurker Says:

chris is the scum expert, I see. I thought your kind was supposed to let the lord do the judging?

  28. tmaxcon Says:

Wright looked adequate under Lovie but man did he fall off cliff last year. Having not watched many bears games can anyone tell me how much different of a scheme the regime in Chicago played last year. Was wright asked to things outside his skill set ala the entire bucs didn’t under schiano.

Well Chicagoa defense as a whole was bad. No pressure up front. CBS hurt. LB core struggled. Tillman was out. Wright played through injuries and it was a new staff and d cord.

Wright balled out under lovie. To call him “Sabby jr” is the most uneducated thing joe could say. When has Sabby ever even played well?

Dude, Joe never called Wright “Sabby jr.” There’s really no reason to fabricate stuff. Wright has taken legitimate heat for his angles to the football and ballcarriers. Those were huge flaws in Sabby’s game. –Joe

  30. tmaxcon Says:

Thanks Chris sounds like it’s worth a shot to see what wright can do low risk. I never thought shabby ever played well.

  31. Martinii Says:

Keep up the good work Jason and Lovie. I agree with macabee 100 percent. This is what you do to a 4-12 team. We are not talking Rutgers college players, we are talking professional football players that Lovie has coached on a professional level, apples and oranges. This time next year there may be room for criticism, but for now I’m pumped……

  32. kh Says:

    Mr. Bonzai,

What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your comparison of the Bears and Rutgers were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in the comment section is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    Kh too funny…

  34. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

comparing wright to sabby is like comparing dion sanders to pac man jones…it isnt even in the same field of play.not that wright is close to sanders’ level, but hes head and shoulders above freelancing sabby

  35. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

    Deion*

  36. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    Kh… ON POINT!!!!

  37. Drew Says:

Bonzai… I thought you committed Hari Kari.

  38. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

***YOu see kh with the Billy Madison reference lol….rutgers is not the bears or even UF.

  39. unbelievable Says:

@kh, LMFAO. Nice to end my day at JBF with a laugh

  40. TheMan Says:

We need some more Lovie offensive Bears players, where are they all? Is Rex available, oh I forgot we got Josh, the savior that will bring Tampa the Lombardi.

  41. Ou812 Says:

McClown is going to set the record books on fire, can’t wait till the boos echo through the empty Ray Jay, then lets see what our man Lovie has in store. Would he then go after Mr. Bear himself, the gunslinger, Cutler? I sure hope this doesn’t continue with the pipeline of average Bears coming south.

  42. Mike10 Says:

Cool….. Hey Lovie, how bout you just have your defense play both sides of the ball

  43. Glenningrad Says:

Maybe the journeyman can lob the ball to himself. Or maybe we’ll leave the to Manziel. Either way I am scared about how god awful we will be soon. We can just pray for the miracle that Vjax can get the ball. Im all for releasing players without value, but why were in such a hurry to dump all our players is a mystery to me. Unless we are about to make a big move with that 1.5 mil I think this was an incredibly inane thing to do.

  44. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

    @ JOE

Any news on Lavelle Hawkins ?

  45. Maze Says:

Can’t wait for the boo’s… best fans ever

  46. DCBUCFAN Says:

Clearly “joe” with Sabby comparison and Bonzo with his Rutgers assumptions deserved all the backlash..lol By the way Bonzo, may I remind you the former 1 st rounder of Bears Carmini whom was acquired last year for this yr Bucs 6 round pick was released by Lovie. that should tell you something!

  47. Dreambig Says:

15 free agents now. Wow! That’s a lot of change. We certainly seem to have added depth to the defense and you can see some battles brewing for playing time. Unfortunately on offense we have cut, replaced and awarded starting positions without competition. I know It’s still early, and we haven’t had the Draft but with the amount of rebuilding going on, it’s hard to see us being very good this year. The defense should be better. The offense has been swapped out, but for now its hard to say it’s been significantly improved. We are counting on a lot of players to step up to levels they have not been before, and that includes the OC. I can’t wait to see what happens.

  48. Shawnbucfan Says:

Coach we have Rex Grossman holding on line 2.

  49. Jon Says:

    Wasteful spending.

  50. Oingo Boingo Says:

Another Gator bust joins the Bucs….Walker,
    Anthony, Green et al.

  51. $acbuc$ Says:

Yes goood pickup Lovie… Major Wright

Joe go watch some film on Major before you judge this kids he’s a thumper. Better then any safety we had in the past.

  52. Owlykat Says:

You can’t judge Wright by what he did in a new system last year. Go back and see his stats playing Tampa Two when he played under Lovie. He had a lot of tackles, passes broken up, and interceptions, and knocked out some fumbles. He will put real pressure on Barron to produce at a first round pick level, because if Barron doesn’t Wright will be starting in his place. And if Goldson does not tackle properly he will be traded and Wright will take over his job. Tandy can back up both positions too. I was not pleased with the Safety starters last year
So I am thrilled Wright is now a Buc.
