Reflecting On The Decision

Uniformnumbersshot

Joe must admit he has come around to the Bucs’ new uniforms. They’ve got sizzle in person, and they just might be a made-for-TV sensation.

The photo above is not a bunch of bizarre, jersey-clad robots. These are Buccaneers players shot at the team’s wildly successfully uniform unveiling for season ticket holders Friday. The lighting was staged to highlight the reflective numbers on the new jerseys.

This really got Joe thinking about what the jerseys will look like in HD under the usual bright lights of an NFL game — day or night. It could be a huge hit with the legions of people who apparently care deeply about jerseys, gear and cool looks. Imagine the sweet sight of a glowing Michael Johnson chasing down Drew Brees on Monday Night Football, or a sparkling Johnny Football slicing past Greg Hardy to move the chains?

Joe also can imagine a bunch of college-age Bucs fans sitting around wearing their jerseys in a dark room with a black light on, smoking pot, listening to Three Days Grace and thinking about the recent tough times of Bucs fans.

Joe’s got a good feelings about these jerseys.

“college-age Bucs fans”…. nice try Joes, we see right through that one.

  2. biff barker Says:

It’s all well and fine long as the new uni’s are stuffed with winners.

  3. meh Says:

    They’re monstrosities.

  4. Patrick in VA Says:

Your comment about Michael Johnson got me thinking, would the reflective numbers and chrome masks under the lights perhaps make it easier for opposing QBs to see our players coming in their periphery and react better than they normally would? Maybe not but it could be an issue

  5. brandonbucfan Says:

The new uni’s may look great under the lights ….too bad we probably will only get one chance again this year to see them. Shame Nike couldn’t figure out a way to put a portable AC unit in them for the hot Sept and Oct Sundays

  6. biff barker Says:

@ Brandon, agree, but being cool is more important than keeping cool. SMH.

  7. pablo Says:

    Joe, who is #14 ???

  8. Oregon Buc Says:

#14 made GMac look short!! Sign him for training camp!!

  9. bucrightoff Says:

Sorry but they still look very amateurish. Add in the fact there was nothing, at all, wrong with the previous set up and this is a pathetic cash grab. Hopefully they tank badly and the pewter and red is back. Or just go back to the creamsicles if you want something that looks awful. At least those are awesome in a over the top bad way.

  10. BucsfaninChina Says:

    Three Days Grace lol

  11. ColiBUC Says:

Nice try Joe, but they still suck. At minimum you have to agree that they are not an improvement over the old ones.

  12. Eric Says:

I am warming up to them. They look pretty darn good on the billboards around town.

Now if number 2 runs out on the field as starter on opening day we really got something going.

  13. Bucfan#37 Says:

No, but I can imagine older guys sitting around watching the Bucs while smoking “pot” with the tv muted, while listening to the greatest rock and roll from the 60’s and 70’s.

  14. BirdDoggers Says:

It seems that the jersey numbers glow under perfect lighting conditions. The stadium lights are designed to light up the field as if it were daytime. I don’t think the reflective numbers will have the effect during games as they did at the uniform unveiling.

  15. bucrightoff Says:

Wow I totally missed the Three Days Grace reference. If you want to use a terrible Canadian band to slander young people’s taste in music, use Nickelback next time. If you wanna give Canadian music some actual love, a Rush, Neil Young or Guess Who reference would have been appreciated.

  16. Shawnbucfan Says:

I have to hold off my vomit..

  17. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

Joe I hate to break it to you but Johnny football is not on the Tampa bay buccaneers roster. Would love for him to be though

  18. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

And isn’t that a disadvantage for night games when drew brees looks downfield and sees the jerseys of the opponents glowing? It’s hard enough to fool him, even harder to do it when he can easily spot you out.

  19. jb Says:

I understand exactly where #37 is coming from. lol

  20. BoJim Says:

Guess what? The Glazers don’t care what you think. Of course it’s cash grab. All owners are in it for the money. They are here for a long while. Get over it.

  21. ElioT Says:

Who the f**k listens to 3 Days Grace? Is that your idea of good stoner music Joe? LMAO…

    Go Bucs!

  22. JoeMan(Ziel)CrushFan Says:

I should preface this saying that I love change. I hated the new uniforms at first with that black background, now that I’ve seen them without I think they are a welcome change. When I go back and look at last years uniform, although good, they look aged. These new ones look good and I for one, one of the few it seems, can’t wait to go out and buy a new one. I think that white one is all me, just have to figure out who.

  23. Mike Says:

They really dropped the ball Joe.

  24. Chef Paul Says:

I cant wait until these uniforms grow on me. I’m getting tired of working so hard to hold in my sammich every time I look at them.

My dear sweet, yet naive mother used to get me some tacky ass generic football jerseys at Wal-Mart for Christmas. I wish these new unis looked half as good as those atrocious unis that a scarecrow wouldn’t wear.

  25. Patrick Says:

Three Days Grace?? If I want to get stoned, Jefferson Airplane or something from the Beatles ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ is the choice for me!!

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think the new uni’s are very strategic. Tacklers will be so busy turning their heads in disgust that we’ll have TD after TD!

    lol, well said!

  28. Orca Says:

“listening to Three Days Grace” ?????????????????????

  29. Orca Says:

    Joe has never smoked weed.

  30. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Last year’s Bucs were enough to make anybody head for the bong, not just college guys.

  31. Kevin Says:

Still hate the font they used for the numbers. I’m ok with the rest of it. They could wear pink (well maybe not) as long as they win us a championship.

  32. Bronze Badger Says:

If they ever wear those white pants, I’ll just listen on the radio to Mean Gene.

  33. ShutTheBucUp Says:

“a sparkling Johnny Football slicing past Greg Hardy…”

put the lubricating oils away Joe. lol

  34. Buc1987 Says:

    The jerseys suck.

  35. Tristan Berry Says:

After the helmet unveiling (which I love) I was guardedly optimistic about seeing what the new uniform would look like. But once I saw it, I felt betrayed. Seriously. Betrayed. I very nearly cried. Now, I MIGHT be able to come around to not hating the new jersey IF they get rid of the HORRENDOUS font they’re using for the numbers. I’ll even shut up about the dirt-stupid day-glo effect if they just please, for the sake of all that’s masculine, PLEASE change that AWFUL font!

  36. Tristan Berry Says:

(retching sounds suppressed to protect the public)

  37. chef paul Says:

These jerseys have a good purpose. My son accidently got into the cleaning products cabinet. I freaked out and called the doctor. He said to induce vomiting. I showed him the new jerseys. He’s healthy as horse now. Much appreciated team Glazer!!!

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

Maybe the reflective properties of the jerseys will blind the opposing QBs thus causing them to throw pick after pick!
See, it can’t be all bad!

  39. Northern Buc Says:

Tristan Berry – I agree about the font – I could live with the rest.

Disagree about the helmet — When Sapp unveiled it on NFL Network I actually thought it was a joke . . . and that he was going to reach down below the podium and pull up the “real new helmet” design while saying “I was just screwing with y’all”

Same first impression of the uni — at first glance I thought it was another bogus fkae design from the interwebs. I was sadly wrong. I can live with the uni design and the reflective elements (which should have been put into the piping etc. but the numbers are ridiculous.

  40. WalkdaPlank Says:

@BoJim – of course the Glazers care what we think. We as fans are what makes this team and league go and are highly encouraged to pay lots of hard earned to go to games, buy merchandise and of course watch the game. If the majority of this fanbase refuses to buy one of these Arena Football/CFL jerseys or other merchandise that will mean loads of money wasted.

Personally, I think it was stupid of them to try and fix something that wasn’t broken. The chrome and “BUCS” on the sleeve as well as the reflective numbers are pretty cool. But that’s it.

What is with the alarm clock numbers? And you can tell they did that intentionally rather than coincidentally because not only do they have the same font as an alarm clock, but they even put the lines on the corners of the numbers to make them look more digital.

What is with all the black? Not so much on the away uniforms but the home ones. They do know the Bucs play in south Florida right? Yeah, all that black combined with the Florida heat is going to do wonders for keeping players hydrated. And to top it off their opponents will most likely be in their white away uniforms. Awesome.

And what the hell is with the orange? The red and black go together but mixed with the orange it makes them look like the Bengals. Especially on the away uniforms. Where did it come from?

I know everyone has their own opinions, some will like them and some won’t, and that’s fine. You can’t make everyone happy. But take a look at the old uniforms and new ones side by side and try to tell me the new ones are better.

  41. WalkdaPlank Says:

    *money

  42. lion Says:

Have to be 100% honest here, I was at the unveiling ceremony and Johnny Manziel would look great wearing the new Bucs uni.

  43. Oahubuc Says:

They actually look worse than many of the mock-ups I saw dreamed up by internet hacks. I really don’t see myself buying one.

  44. Ryan Says:

I’m a college-age Bucs fan. I’ve literally met about 4 other college-aged Bucs fans in my 4 years at UCF. We’re not a very hip team.
