Bucs OLB Jonathan Casillas describes Lovie Smith’s defense.

The Jeff Tedford Mystery is one thing that keeps Bucs fans awake at night. Will the Bucs run the ball? Pass the ball? Keep it about 50/50? Will they pass the ball downfield or go Chucky dink-and-dunk?

Fans won’t know until the regular season starts. But Joe and other Bucs fans do know what the defense will look like. Per Alterraun Verner, the Bucs under coach Lovie Smith will run a Tampa-2 defense only a fraction of the time.

Recently, outside linebacker Jonathan Casillas did an interview with Pro Football Zone where he talked about Lovie’s defense.

Casillas likes to refer to Lovie’s defense as “Run-and-Hit.”

“I think it will be very different,” Casillas said. “Knowing [Lovie] from Chicago, it is a run-and-hit defense where you have to have quick linebackers like Lavonte David and myself and good defensive linemen. Gerald McCoy, DaQuan Bowers, Adrian Clayborn and Will Gholston. I think we have the roster to play this defense. The rocks of our defense [are] there. We are just trying to figure out how defenses fit in. our roster if full of guys that will flourish in this defense. Wow, I think we can be a dominant defense. We have the guys to do it.”

Obviously, this interview was conducted before the Bucs splurged in free agency. If Casillas liked the Bucs defensive linemen before, then imagine now.

Also, in this interview, Casillas described what was going on inside the walls of One Buc Palace the morning former Bucs commander Greg Schiano and his staff was jettisoned. Just click the orange button below.

So our defensive players will be required to run and hit. Genius.

  2. brandonbucfan Says:

Guess he wasn’t watching the film of the players we saw last year WITH #24. All our new FA’s have never been TRUE starters before. IMO the words “value”
“potential” and “maybe” can all be found under the same word in the dictionary under “HOPE”

  3. biff barker Says:

Speaking of run and hit, I’d recommend they start with the opposing QB. It’s been years now….

  4. Theodore Says:

Whew. I was afraid we were going to Jog-And-Tag.

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

Genius! Who would’ve thought it could be so easy?!
All kidding aside though, I do like our corps group. We’ve got the thumpers, we just need to play smarter, and oh, rush the passer.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Right….thumpers we do have…..

  7. McBuc Says:

    Verner was a starter…

  8. biff barker Says:

Let’s start by thumping Brees, Newton and Ryan.

Best way to get the 3rd best QB in the division?

What is your definition of true starter? Cause, off the top of my head, i know for a fact that Varner, Johnson and Jenkins were all starters before they came here. And that is w/o doing any research cause i’m at work…

  10. Jonny 2.3 Says:

So Casillas is the self proclaimed rock of this defense.

  11. zam Says:

thanks for summarizing that interview Joe… i don’t mean to be mean but it was sooooo boring

  12. GlenninGrad Says:

I can’t wait to be proud of my Bucs for once. I’m one of the three kids in a town where if you don’t like the Redskins you get beat up in football season

  13. GlenninGrad Says:

three kids who are bucs fans

  14. Tim Says:

Run and hit… That’s My type of game!

    Signed,
    Ray Rice

  15. Mumbles Says:

The Bucs are still looking for depth at WR. They brought in Dolphin WR Marlon Moore for a tryout today. No stone unturned!

  16. Cmurda Says:

The guy interviewing Casillas. Is that Ben Stein from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Anyone, anyone?

  17. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Didn’t Schiano coach his defense to run and hit?

Then the players complained about running while the refs flagged for the hitting.

    Hmmmm de ja vu.

  18. Owlykat Says:

Casillas is a Special Teams Ace that we need, but he was nothing special at SLB last year. Foster will have to be moved there, however, because he can’t cover deep down the middle for Tampa Two, but he will play Super there like he did in college. We still need a great MLB in the draft but the good news there is one in the draft the size and skill of Urlacher out Michigan State who we can get in the 2d round.

  19. bigpoppabuc Says:

Just because it won’t be predictable doesn’t mean it’s much of a mystery, Joe. Keep egging it on though.
