McCown Talks About Johnny Football

March 28th, 2014

josh mccown 0317Lovie Smith said Wednesday to Joe and other media that he’ll exhaust all connections and learning opportunities to make a decision about potential Bucs draft pick.

For Johnny Football, Lovie won’t have to go far to find a little insight.

Yes, Bucs starting quarterback Josh McCown has had more than just a passing interest in Johnny Football. McCown’s older brother Randy was a Texas A&M starting quarterback (1997-1999) just like Johnny Football and has gotten to know him.

Speaking on the Listen Closely podcast on ESPN, hosted by Linda Cohn, Josh McCown said the off-the-field drama surrounding his fellow Texan, Johnny Football, was understandable and is seemingly in the past.

McCown said being a successful college quarterback in Texas, let alone at College Station, is “a huge deal” with tremendous pressure and scrutiny, something his brother experienced on a smaller scale.

“Couple that with a Heisman and the success that they had [with Johnny Football], so I can understand how that could become overwhelming,” Josh McCown said.

McCown said his brother came away from his time with Johnny Football with the impression that Johnny’s “got a lot going on” but is heading in the right direction.

“Once he gets to the NFL and he gets around older people and he gets around the right guys in the locker room and he’ll be able to function and hopefully help a football team. The on-field stuff, how that translates to the NFL, will be interesting to see,” McCown said. “My brother enjoyed the time he spent around [Johnny Football] and thought he was a good guy, really, you know, was impressed with him. It seems like all the other hoopla and mess has kind of passed him.”

McCown didn’t talk about Johnny Football and the Buccaneers, but he did say any QB chosen in top-10 overall must be prepared for an “instant bulls-eye on your chest, and you’re the man and you’ve got to lead a franchise.”

Regardless of what QB the Bucs may draft, the more Joe listens to McCown speak, the more Joe realizes what a fantastic mentor this guy will be for Mike Glennon and a rookie quarterback. It’s too bad sleepy, leaky Josh Freeman wasn’t given a guy like McCown to lean on during his formative years.

So, there’s 3 McCown brother QBs? That’s pretty impressive. Lot’s of competition at the Thanksgiving table.

  2. lightningbuc Says:

    ODB,

Yeah, Luke and Josh hold clipboards at the table to make sure all the potatoes, turkey, gravy, etc make it to the table.

  3. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    HA!

  4. Chef Paul Says:

ODB and lightning, lol Yous guys make a great team. I love reading your jokes back and forth. Always one guy settin em up and the other knockin em down.

  5. Nate_tweetz Says:

Shoot… We’d all dream to hold a clip board on the sideline and get paid what they’re getting paid for a living. Lol. McCown seems like a cool dude. L&L are smart for bringing him in regardless if he starts or not. If/when we draft a QB it will be important to have good guys around him. Like Joe mentioned… Freeman was anointed the “Franchise” before proving anything to anybody and had no type of leadership to lean on as a 20 year old kid out of college.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

    Joe,

I know you guys say this isn’t a question and answer board, but hopefully you guys can answer me on this one.

Do both the Joes feel so strongly about Johnny, or is one much more excited about him than the other? Just curious. Inquiring minds want to know.

  7. Fishfries Says:

People that hate Jonny football are jealous or clueless. The guys a winner point blank. Joe, you should post what Jerry Rice(top 5 football player ever IMO) take on him. He’s gonna be a star.

  8. zam Says:

    He’s Doug Flutie 2014. Sorry.

And don’t say Russell Wilson, he ran a 4.55, Manziel ran a 4.68.

  9. Eric Says:

If only JF were .13 seconds faster in the 40.

    Hilarious.

JOHNNY WILL VISIT WITH THE BUCS

  12. passthebuc Says:

    @Joe
I think the frequenters of your posts owe you enough that they start a Tampa chapter of JFA, That would be Johnny Football Anonymous. Trauma and withdraw will be catastrophic and without overwhelming support you will crash. Maybe someone in the Buc’s organization could appoint Rachel as chapter president.

  14. Manzielski Says:

After yesterday’s Pro Day, the only way JF would visit OBP, is if the Bucs are trading up closer to the #1 overall pick.

No way he falls to the #7. No way his agent would let him visit.

    That would be admitting defeat.

One little factoid about JF that will please Joe, he wear a size 15 shoe.

You know what they say about big feet.

  15. biff barker Says:

I’m warming up to the idea of drafting JFootball.

The Glazers want fans in the stands.

  16. Left_Coast_Bucs_Fan Says:

OMG, the JF withdrawal pains created once Houston, Cleveland, Jacksonville or Oakland picks Manziel ahead of the Bucs will be devastating to this website’s ratings. Lovie wants a QB who plays under control within a system, doesn’t make mistakes and makes safe decisions at the line, that’s not Manziel. Besides, there’ s nothing about Tedford’s past that would indicate Manziel fits his mold of a franchise type QB. Bortles, Bridgewater, Garoppolo, McCarron, or even Murray yes, Manziel, no.

Yes, I would love to see the Bucs take a chance on him if he’s available because he’s got a higher upside then most of the others, but I just don’t see it happening in Tampa-town. In 41 days it’s a lot more likely one of those other guys will be our future franchise QB, so guys, let’s start talking more about some of them so the withdrawal pains won’t be so hard to overcome.

  17. Patrick Says:

If the Bucs really want Manziel, they can TRADE UP and get him. If you really want something, you can get it.

  18. Lev Says:

Lovie is playing this perfect. Since stating that McCown is the starter, no one is expecting the Bucs to draft a QB at 7.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    atrick Says
“JOHNNY WILL VISIT WITH THE BUCS”

That is NOT what Breer said. They met with him there at his Pro Day for private interviews.

“If the Bucs really want Manziel, they can TRADE UP and get him. If you really want something, you can get it.”

I want him or Bortles, but I am very much against trading up. The way I see it, one of the top 3 QBs will fall to 7. If it is not Bridgewater, the Bucs need to take a QB.

I’ve believed all along that Bridgewater will be a bust.

  21. Maze Says:

Silly Joe. You forgot Bust In Waiting. Got to give it to you, Joebucsfan had josh perfectly called the moment the warden called that quitters name at the poduim. So with your eagle eye for QB talent, Johnny Manziel just might have a chance at success in the NFL yet. Touchdown McCown. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Great #2…where’s our starting QB? Didn’t we go through enough of this crap with Gruden?
Bring in young high quality talent. Why is everyone so content with this guy?
