McCown Not Sure If He Is Starting

March 26th, 2014

Some very interesting timing at One Buc Palace these days. Yesterday, Bucs general manager Jason Licht, in a pre-recorded interview from the NFL Owners Meetings in Orlando, told SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Alex Marvez that the starting quarterback gig for the regular season is very much still in competition.

On the very same day Licht told Marvez the starting QB gig is an open competition (Licht only mentioned Josh McCown and did not mention incumbent starter Mike Glennon), McCown took to the national airwaves as well to state nearly the same thing.

While appearing on the “Doug Gottlieb Show,” heard on CBS Sports Radio Network, locally tapped into via WQYK-AM 1010, McCown confessed he doesn’t know who the Bucs starting quarterback is.

“Essentially, I’m coming [to Tampa Bay] to compete but they brought me here because they want me to play,” McCown said. “They are bringing me here to do a job, obviously, and that is to make [the quarterback] position better. Out of the gate am I a starter? We’ll see.

“I will be ready to take the snaps when they are given to me. My plan is to be the starter.“

Now Joe is not suggesting he has gone J. Edgar Hoover or Richard Nixon and has listening devices planted at One Buc Palace to learn the Bucs’ draft plans. But the more Joe hears Licht talk, and Lovie Smith talk, Joe is more and more convinced L&L are going to draft a signal-caller at some point in May’s draft.

Whether that is Johnny Football at No. 7, Derek Carr in the second round, Jimmy Garoppolo in the third round or Aaron Murray on the third day of the draft, Joe isn’t quite sure.

One of thos QB projections is late, Joe. Garoppolo is going in the second. And Murray could go in the fourth though. But I agree they’ll take one. No way Carr gets past the Browns second first round pick. Let alone their second round pick. No way we see him if we wait that long. Word on the street is that people like him better than Bridgewater

  2. Orca Says:

Fruitball is not being drafted by the Bucs at #7. Maybe they’ll consider him when their second round pick comes around. Yeah, he’s gonna drop. Carr will be drafted in the first round.

  3. Joe Says:

And Murray could go in the fourth though.

    That’s a third-day draft.

  4. Rob Says:

Again… Lovie Smith never promised that McCown would start, just that he would start training camp at #1 on the depth chart. This idea that Lovie named McCown the starter was untrue from the first minute.

  5. Cannon Fire! Says:

Wow, the G.M. and the QB are already back peddling? I thought that this at least take until the middle of training camp. Did they just get around to watching Glennon’s performance last year?

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Lovie said it correctly, just some in the media jumped at the chance to place Glennon as third string, or will be traded in order to show that they were right.

  7. Bucfan77. Says:

One thing No one can ever blame the Joe’s of is missing the chance of minimizing, making light of or trying to dissuade others (L & included) of giving Glennon any credit for any of his accomplishments. The comment about 4th best quarterback is going to come back to bite someone.

  8. PRBucFan Says:

    Not a hard concept

He’s the starter now because there has to a number 1 going out there first rep wise.

There will be competition but it’s McCown’s job to lose.

  9. Patrick McV Says:

I agree Joe but I don’t tink we are picking a QB at 7 Remember what GM said …… not who you are thinking of . I am thinking MURRAY

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ PR

I agree…It makes no sense to bring in McCown for $10 mil/2yrs if you don’t plan to start him year 1 (at least). He is there to develop Glennon or a draft pick or both.
I doubt they keep three QBs, so if they draft a QB they will trade Glennon. I think we could get a mid-round pick for him because he has at least proven to be a suitable, inexpensive, young backup…..

  11. ClassieFreddieBlassie Says:

The only reason Lovie announced McCown as the starter was to get the media off his back on the subject. They will draft a QB and it will be an open competition at camp. Being named the starter in March means nothing, just ask Matt Flynn. He got beat out by a third round pick when playing for Seattle. And yes Glennon Mob, that means your boy has a chance to win the job, and if he wins, I will have no problems getting behind him. He just better be working his tail off this off-season and putting some girth on that man-boy frame of his.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @PR

Sun should be shining in Gamecock Country today…finally!!!

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Training camp QB’s: McCown, Glennon, and Kafka. Atleast that’s what my tea leaf is saying right now.

  14. lightningbuc Says:

I’m not sure anyone can believe a thing the head coach says. He said he wanted Revis – he’s now gone. He said McCown was the starter – the GM says no. He said Mike Williams won’t be jettisoned – UH-OH!

It appears the demise of Mike Glennon may have been greatly exaggerated!

  15. kevin Says:

    Joe,

It is Teddy at 7 if avail, or Garoppolo at 38. Take it to the bank. Holding Glennon to not completely give our hand away prior to draft. We will deal glennon for a 4th on day 2 of the draft.

  16. BFFL Says:

The Bucs are set at QB. I assure you Glennon is worth a 2nd round pick but I still think the Bucs like what they have in Glennon. Why risk loosing Glennon for an unknown rookie QB when most of the experts agree that Glennon has tremendous potential. There are still too many holes that must be addressed in the draft. There will always be next year to bring in more QBs if needed.

  17. Chris Says:

Cam newton is the 3rd best qb in the division. Nick foles is the 4th best in the east. Andy dalton is the 3rd best in the north.

I don’t care if we have the 4tj best qb the division. As long as they can score points and move the offense to win ball games. It’s a team game joe.

  18. FloridaGirl Says:

As the best Rookie QB in the league last year, the Bucs know they already have a steal. Glennon was tossed into a crapstorm last year because of the Freeman freakout – they didn’t intend for him to start when they drafted him. He did about what you’d expect a rookie QB to do from a mistake standpoint, but also managed to set club records along the way and outpace the highly touted QBs drafted much earlier. That the Bucs dumped almost the entire O-line tells you how porous that thing was. No wonder the kid didn’t have time. Bucs are going to have McCown primed to compete as a veteran head to head with Glennon and whoever else they bring in. Glennon will have to compete for the job just like anyone else. I won’t be surprised to see him start again at some point again next year, and then McCown will slide into the mentor role.

  19. Tut Says:

    Murray please

  20. NY Buc Says:

as it should be, camp competition may the best (Glennon) QB (Glennon) win (Glennon)

  21. Hawk Says:

I can’t believe people are serious when they talk of ‘trading’ Glennon. HE IS UN-TRADEABLE! Lovie is on record (and backed up by his history), that he will start the season with TWO (2) QBs. That means, if the Bucs draft a QB in the first or second round, 31 teams can just wait for the axe to fall on Glennon(like with Revis, et al).

  22. Kevin Says:

Chris I wish more people looked at it like that. It is a complete team sport. There are so many things that go into winning a game and it always goes on the QB. Yes there are elite QB’s out there that can get they’re team to a championship, but with a solid defense and putting up some points you don’t always need the best QB…you need the best team overall. Last two years in a row Flacco and Wilson. Neither is an elite QB…NEITHER!!!!!!!!!!! They both have rings though.

  23. NY Buc Says:

I hated the Revis move this year, but at least there was the silver lining of freeing up 16M. Cutting Glennon at his low salary would be a pretty dumb move for Lovie & Licht. Teams usually don’t dump potential franchise QB’s or even trade them away for late round picks after one season. Heck nobody is really sure if Jake Locker, Ryan Tannehill, or Andy Dalton are the franchise QB’s of their respective teams, but you didn’t see any of them being traded away for late round picks or being cut after their rookie seasons (and I don’t think any of them played statistically better than Mike).

  24. bucrightoff Says:

People like Hawk get it. If Glennon is being dumped, he will be traded before the draft. But once the Bucs draft a QB the chance to trade Glennon is gone, teams will simply be patient and get him for free (or the Bucs will have to accept a low ball offer of a conditional 6th round pick).

  25. David Says:

Uh Floridagirl, Glennon had something to do with those sacks..anybody watching who knows anything about football could tell u he held the ball wayyyy too long sometimes. But, i like the kid, and i hope he or whoever the qb is succeeds. Im tired of not rooting for a team when the playoffs come around!

  26. JWBucs Says:

I don’t think the Bucs take a QB at #7 but if they did it prob wouldn’t be Johnny even if he is still on the board. In all of Tedford’s years he never recruited a scrambling QB. He always had pocket pass first guys.

  27. owlykat Says:

I believe Licht was talking about Carr when he believed there was a QB for the Bucs but we would be surprised who. At that time many thought Carr would go in the second round. He has a rocket for an arm and played from the pocket but could keep plays alive with his feet and Tedford is partial to Carr from teaching his brother. Well now that Carr has shown he is fast as Johnny Football at the combine and he is an outstanding athlete too, his stock has shot up. If the Bucs pass on him in the 7th pick they will lose him and he won’t make it to the second round, so we have to grab him at 7. Minnesota also needs a QB and will grab Carr likely if we pass on him.

  28. Drew Thomas Says:

Man some people really love a get sacked can’t complete a deep ball Glennon. You guys know football like nobody else. His accomplishments are so so so so greaaaaaa, wait sorry you all had me going Glennon mob, average in college average in NFL.

  29. bucsfan85 Says:

lmao best rookie QB last year !!!? wow that’s saying a lot glennon beat out smith, Manuel. Wow what an accomplishment ! not. Oh yea they both won more games then him and lead better offenses ! learn the game. nopolioan dynamites days are numbered only reason the average QB even got a shot was because a douchebag college coach had a hard on for him.. oh yea and that douchbag is doin what now ? nothing he really had an eye for talent. glennon sucks end of story his days are done go hang your #8 jerseys up! lol wonder why you can’t find his jersey on our site???? oh because the team and nike put a hold on that losers Jersey! nuff said

  30. bucsfan85 Says:

name a average QB that has been in the playoffs in the past 3 years? exactly QBs like glennon will never cut it! get over it some of you people are beyond pathetic it’s unreal. Go watch NASCAR

  31. feelthepewterpower Says:

Sounds like a nice smokescreen. Smart of the Buccs to let a little doubt linger nationally as to who their starter will be. I doubt the buccs draft Manziel if he is there, and personallu I would not take him. again, i go defense, or line with the first pick, and even trade down since its a deep class.

  32. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Tell us how you really feel Bucsfan85 lol
We all will have different opinions on what an average QB is so instead I will offer a list of non elite QB’s that have been to the playoffs in the past 3 seasons (since you issued the challenge)
    1. Andy Dalton
    2. Colin Kaepernick
    3. Nick Foles
    4. Matt Shaub
    5. Alex Smith
    6. Tim Tebow
    7. Christian Ponder

In fact a lot of those teams got into the playoffs by having stout defenses and solid/average you might say QB play. Do you see the pattern and realize the head coach the Bucs have? Glennon and McCown absolutely can fit the bill

  33. Patrick Says:

If we get Carr it’s only going to be because he and Tedford know each other……not because he’s a great prospect.

  34. BoJim Says:

    bucsfan85 Said:

Yeah we get it. You don’t like Glennon.
