Not Quite A “Clean Slate” For Mike Williams

March 26th, 2014

mike williams 0208While dining on breakfast fare this morning with Lovie Smith, a reporter asked Lovie whether Mike Williams would basically get a “clean slate” along with the rest of the Buccaneers that will (should) be there when the team reports back to One Buc Palace on April 7.

“Clean slate?” Well, Lovie won’t go that far.

Yes, Lovie told Joe and other media that Williams wasn’t about to be skewered by his new regime for his past actions.

But Lovie cautioned that Williams the rest of the Bucs each have their own histories, and their past deeds carry weight with him, though not necessarily too much weight before he gets a chance to address the team and talk about football and team rules.

To date, by league rules, Lovie hasn’t been able to do that. Lovie said he’s talked to Williams and looks forward to starting the season with him.

Joe thought about typing up Lovie’s various quotes from this morning on the subject; he was peppered with questions, but Joe’s not going to invest the time.

The message was clear: Williams will have every chance to prove himself worthy of playing for his new head coach.

Nice use of the word “skewered”

  2. Nate_tweetz Says:

I know Mike has been quite a distraction as of late. BUT, he is a good #2 WR. We have zero WR depth and if we don’t draft Sammy Watkins with the 7th overall pick, and WR we pick up could possibly be more of a slot/speed type guy. When it’s all said and done, L&L very well may rid themselves of Mike Williams, but not before the draft. They also would not want to completely throw the guy under the bus just for the fact that they can keep a slim chance of trading him for something later. It does them no good to go and bash him publicly in March. If L&L are able to replace him by the start of the season they will. If not, he will be playing for us on Sundays.

  3. SteveK (MGM) Says:

    Mike Williams,

Shut up, be smart about your entourage , and give us Buc fans 1,000 yards and 10+TDs.

Let your play do the talking.

It would be a damn shame for you to have more 911 calls to your house than Touchdowns next season. 6 calls to 911, let’s hope you can score at least 6 touchdowns.

I hope you aren’t being a moron because you finally got paid. I hope you really want to win. If not , we will trade your azz.

And to think of all the people on here that want to throw Mike Williams under the bus, it’s a damn shame. Mike Williams hasn’t done one thing that warrants him being cut. Too many uptight, panties in a bunch, rush to judgement people around these parts. If we didn’t have Williams on this team you could say good bye to next year as we would be in horrible shape at WR or we would have to WASTE extra picks in the draft at WR. Currently, we only need to use one pick at WR, let’s not make it anymore you clowns.

  5. Chef Paul Says:

Damn proud to have Lovie as the coach.

He is handling this perfectly, and certainly better than I would have.

Lovie is a GREAT human being.

  6. Harry Says:

    @SteveK,
I find myself in full agreement with every word you wrote.

MW, quit being stupid and recognize the huge blessing that has been laid at your feet. What a gift – take advantage of it.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

So, there it is. Can we move on from this sillyness, PLEASE?!

Do the Bucs plan to start Jamon Meredith at RG?

  8. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Mike (house-party) Williams will not be on the opening day roster of the 2015 Bucs.

  9. BUCSLEGENDS Says:

Bucs add Louis Murphy ! GO BUCS !!!!!!!

    LOL

  11. buccochris Says:

Bucs just signed Louis Murphy to 1 year deal. 3rd receiver / depth move?

  12. Mumbles Says:

Leave Mike alone. He can take care of himself. Right?

  13. Daffy Buc Says:

All you Mikettes can support #19 tomorrow!! He has a hearing involving the woman’s door he kicked in!! The woman who was terrified and scared for life. No wonder she wanted no part of him in her life. Wear your jersey and support him. Maybe get a autograph.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

Nice declaration Realist! Can you tell me who wins the Kentucky Derby too?!
Bucco-return man too, if memory serves.

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

Way to take it to the next level Daffy! Should we take anything you say seriously with that handle?!

  16. Buc the Haters Says:

Louis murphy signing gives us a legitimate sub-4.4 target to add to Vjax, MW19, TWright, & sub-4.3 potential slot guy (percy harvin-type) Jeff Demps…. We’re starting to shape up in the weapons dept. One more stud WR in the draft and a couple OL and we are in BEAST MODE (/championship mode).

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

Haters- Murphy and Demps are intriguing but unproven(Demps more so). I’d like for both to live up to the hype, but right now, they’re just hype.
At least Murphy has some experience. I am not in the Demps camp yet.

  18. Patrick McV Says:

Murphy is a proven player but you can’t cut Williams at this point . WHAT no .

  19. stevek Says:

Big Darrell 620 and the Joes are saying “shame on the MW19 haters”.

I say, “Shame on wasting six 911 calls for STUPID STUFF”.

How about we make the playoffs, or win a super bowl, before totally falling off track.

No one is cheering this kind of stuff.

  20. Bucfan#37 Says:

I’ll say it again, NO to moving or trading Williams. That it is being mentioned is pure speculation on those minds who want him gone.

  21. Warren Says:

Mike Williams was sub par last year. While VJax and Wright were busy being beasts (well as beastly as you can be in that offense), Williams routinely disappeared. Almost anything on the personal side (apart from hurting someone else) is forgiveable once you produce. He honestly did almost nothing to distinguish himself as a #2 last year…unless we’re using the term as a euphemism for something else…then yeah…he was a #2 alright

  22. Warren Says:

Ok granted it was only 6 games (had to look that up…seemed like more)…but he wasn’t much of a factor in those if memory serves..prior to being injured. Still, historically a solid player for us…hopes he gets his head out of his ass and has a monster year.

  23. Chef Paul Says:

It would be a damn shame for you to have more 911 calls to your house than Touchdowns next season. 6 calls to 911, let’s hope you can score at least 6 touchdowns.”

“Ok granted it was only 6 games (had to look that up…seemed like more)”

TD’s verses 911 calls seems a little far fetched. Maybe we should be shooting for Games verses 911 calls. Which means he would’ve gotten a par.

  24. Mike10 Says:

As much as I like to hear that Williams wasn’t going to be released, I really can’t hold Lovie at his word. Revis was gone after we were to believe Lovie couldn’t wait to have a playmaker of his ability in his scheme. So until Williams’ first snap of the 2014 year, I’ll wait cautiously!……

  25. Mike10 Says:

This is great to hear Joe. It drove me crazy hearing at first that McCown was going to be anointed the starting gig just by signing on the dotted line. Let’s take something out of Maddon’s playbook when it comes to naming a closer, to be the starting QB: earn it!

  26. kh Says:

How many times have we heard this story before (Talib, Wright, etc.)? There’s no doubt in my mind that MW will do something stupid before too long and will get cut before the season starts. It’s a fait accompli.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    Warren Says:

“Mike Williams was sub par last year. While VJax and Wright were busy being beasts (well as beastly as you can be in that offense), Williams routinely disappeared.”

Thank you for stating this. People seem to forget before his hammy he was basically non-existent in the first 6 games. That’s the point I was trying to make the other day. He (possibly) was non-existent in the first 6 games, because of too much partying. That’s why I say if he stays with the team and I still don’t think he will, everyone will see what I’m talking about in 2014. His production dropped off big time last season and I FULLY expect it to continue in 2014. But hey he’s the best #2 they can find ya know. Don’t get rid of Mike. Whatever, you’ll see.

  28. Ghost Says:

I understand mike Williams is a great super guy but what’s up with the mattresses in the front yard? Inquiring minds want to know joe?

  29. BoJim Says:

There is no doubt in my mind that Mike will screw up again. Or that he will have a great year. There, covered all my bases.
