Dungy: McCown Will Improve Those Around Him

Dungy weighs in on Mike Glennon, too.

A little known piece of Bucs history was revealed today on WDAE-AM 620;  Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford could have (and maybe should have) been a Buccaneer in 1996.

Father Dungy said on the Ron and Ian show that he tried to hire Tedford for his inaugural staff in ’96, but he couldn’t convince him to reunite in Tampa with one of his prized college students, Trent Dilfer.

Dungy called Tedford “very creative, but he wanted to stay and [become] a college head coach.” And that’s what happened, when Tedford eventually grabbed the reigns of “Cal” in 2002.

Dungy clearly has immense respect for Tedford and said he expects all the Bucs quarterbacks to blossom, but he envisions Josh McCown stability and ability to raise the game of those around him will be difference-maker.

“I like Mike Glennon. I think there’s some things that Glennon did very well that I saw last year. Lovie Smith has had some experience with McCown. We saw what he did a limited role. Now, can he do that in a new offense in a situation where he’s got new players to learn?” Dungy wonder aloud.  “But the thing about Josh is that I think he’s going to be stable. He’s going to be solid. He’s going to help his guys play better.

“I like his demeanor. I like the way he approaches the game. I think he’s going to bring a lot to the Bucs. And I’m looking forward to watching this offense and how they incorporate Doug Martin and Vincent Jackson and some of the talent that they have.”

Joe can’t emphasize enough that Tedford’s offense is one giant mystery. Aside from his lack of NFL experience, Tedford was diverse in college and was known for his guru-like creativity. McCown is referencing “Chip Kelly.” New center Evan Dietrich-Smith is talking “up tempo.” And there’s the double tight end Patriots connection.

And, of course, there’s the likely edition of a promising rookie quarterback.

Buccaneers sign Mike Jenkins per Bleacher Report

  2. bucrightoff Says:

No I’m pretty sure Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey (and Marc Trestman) improved McCown a lot more than he improved them. And that we’ll know that by about week 6.

  3. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

When will the media be able to see something close to scrimmaging to get a better idea of the O? OTAs?

  4. Barry Says:

When it comes to QBs Lovie and Dungy are Laurel & Hardy of the NFL. “This is another fine mess you’ve gotten me into”.

  5. cmurda Says:

HELLS YEAH! Mike Jenkins in the hizzy!

  6. Orca Says:

edition? I think you mean “addition”, Joe.

  7. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

A likely New Edition at QB? Will it be Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky or Mike?

  8. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Well if Tedford was smart enough not to follow Dillweed Dilfer to the NFL then he has my vote.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Big question. Should they sign Mark Sanchez when he is released? I think they should. It will add true competition and I’m not sold on McCown in the slightest.

Yes, Lovie knows him. Enough to cut him because he wasn’t good enough last time.

I think signing McCown is a smokescreen.

  10. biff barker Says:

Sanchez? Sanchez? We don’t need no stinkin’ Sanchez!

  11. Chris Says:

Brett smith round 3. Qb. Mark it down bucs fans.

If Josh and Mike are the same quarterback who’s more likely to pick up a new offense and lead us to more wins the seasoned veteran or captain checkdown? Mike Glennon hasn’t lead a comeback yet 13 games plus an entire preseason and training camp he was getting 1st team reps as a back up….forget all the stats we haven’t won one single game because of Glennon…..atleast lovie was man enough to come out and say Glennon isn’t our guy and went out in free agency and got someone, Glennon trade bait once we draft a qb, he’s like Kirk cousins now

And how many years in the league did Josh have opposed the ROOKIE?

  14. Trox Says:

Also, the Chip Kelly offense ran a lot of 2 TE sets and didn’t really use a true FB. Lorig is now with the Saints, I think the Bucs are going to use a lot of the same offensive principle of the Eagles in stretching the field horizontally as well as vertically.

  15. Eric Says:

Walter football has us having the choice between Teddy and JF at seven, and taking Teddy.

    ++++++++++++++++

Not sure what you’re saying there…but Joshie led the Bucs to a comeback win against an eventual playoff team in the Packers and showed his potential that day…potential Glennon has yet to ever show.

  17. Bucfan#37 Says:

Sour grapes on Freeman. I was against that pick from day one. Even when he looked good, you knew it was’nt going to last. Another reach, another dud.

  18. Charles Says:

Years of nothing and 5 games of great… By the way also replaced LOL ! Named Bucs starter, REAllLY !!!!

  19. brandonbucfan Says:

I like where we are headed. Still
don’t want to go bananas about this year. Check our opponents home and away and (be realistic) to where we will be at years end…but we will be a MUCH improved team!

  20. louden Says:

if its gonna ge a pro style up tempo offense with chipkelly priciples, Connor Shaw might make even more sense? also picking up a great speed in space/option weapon in DeAnthony Thomas (imagine Thomas with a C.Kaepernick like QB in option offense with a V-jack and high motor (B)MW to stretch the field) – and top it of with another great recieving option in a TE like Ebron..
could only dream about that – yet it could very well get real – but i doubt the bucs have the balls to wait for their QB so long and to pick DeAnthony with their 2nd.. and maybe ChipKelly just wont be able to hold himself back picking him in the all way in the 1st… and drafting Mariota next year – to complety show the NFL what football is about and to shove old-shool QB and systems down his as you know what i want to say..

  21. BFFL Says:

I have read a lot of quotes from Licht that suggest the BUCs are very content with Glennon as the QB that can take over for josh when that time comes. Of course Joe will not post any of those quotes here.

  22. owlykat Says:

Licht will pick a QB in the draft and if he is wrong it will hang around his neck like the Freeman pick cost DOM his job. It is the most important position on getting us to the SB.
Licht will not take the risk with a lower pick unless all four top QBs are gone at 7, and then he will use the 2d pick on that position. The smart move would be a top QB at 7. Then grab the 6’8″ MLB from Michigan State in the second round (think Urlacher and you know Lovie will salivate at this pick), and in the third round get a slotback with good speed, great hands, and runs good routes to get open, or if you believe Page has the talent to be that guy (as I do) then pick the Guard Tedder likes the best. Since Foster is star material if moved to SLB,
with the rest of the picks get the best player available as long as they will also be outstanding playing Special Teams. I trust Licht to pick them with Lovie. With these 11 Free Agents too, all holes will be filled and I see a very exciting season ahead!!!
