McCown Comes Inspired By Sapp

March 13th, 2014

Bucs starting quarterback Josh McCown appears to be the only guy on the roster to have an on-the-field link to iconic Warren Sapp.

Then a six-year veteran in 2007, McCown started nine games for a miserable, 4-12 Oakland team. The Raiders were a brand new club for McCown, but gameday in Oakland was a new experience thanks to No. 99.

Joe asked McCown today if he could share any stories about his time with Sapp or whether Sapp left an impression on him. The question brought what appeared to be McCown’s biggest grin of the day before reporters at One Buc Palace.

“How much time do we have?” McCown replied smiling and laughing. “Here’s what I’ll say about Sapp: One of my favorite gameday experiences is playing with Warren Sapp. And I’ll just leave it at that. What a competitor. I mean, you guys saw him. But I remember the first game [I played with him], and this guy’s like I am now in [his 13th year] or whatever he was in. And I’m watching this guy compete, and you’re drawn to people that have that dog inside of them, that fight. And Warren is one of the greatest ones I’ve been around.

“You saw him and you just felt his juice every, every game. I mean he was getting after it. He was fun to play with.”

McCown seems like a laid back, intelligent guy, but the Bucs brass spoke more today about his strong, intense leadership. And McCown talked about how his high school football coaching days a few years ago made him a better leader/mentor/NFL player.

Joe surely trusts Lovie Smith’s assessment of McCown’s energy and leadership, and the Bucs offense appears to be in good hands. But the big question about McCown is his talent level. The Bucs are banking on McCown to have his best-ever NFL season at 35 years old, if they don’t draft a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft.

  1. Snook Says:

He’s better than having 7 foot tall Beeker at QB. That’s for sure.

Hopefully we still can draft a QB.

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    LOL, Snook.

  3. stratobuc Says:

Its waaaay too early to give up on Glennon. That said, I’m glad McCown is here. He’ll provide leadership and mentor MG. Good signing. Draft receivers.

  4. rdbucfan Says:

Yeah, the 6th best QB in his old division. He is assuredly going to be top 3 in the South. NOT. He may not even be better than the backups for our division foes. Lovie gifting the starting job to what could be the 7th best QB in our division and the Joe’s are excited. Priceless.

  5. Bannor Says:

Beaker…. oh that’s awesome. “Meemeemeeeemeemeemee meemee hike!”

  6. stevek (MGM) Says:

    Snook,

Both QBs on our current roster are better than the starting QB going into the last 5 seasons.

  7. rawr Says:

We will pick a QB in the draft.
Judging by these two days Glennon wont be with us and it seems they are filling or trying to fill all holes they can so in draft they can pick a QB.

  8. rdbucfan Says:

Can’t wait for the 5pm circle-jerk by the Josh McCown Clown Posse.

  9. Joe Dunn Says:

I find it amusing when people blame Glennon’s lack of potential on his being drafted in the 3rd round…..yeah, a 3rd rounder…what do you expect?? He MUST suck !!!

Guess where McCown was originally picked?? YUP, 3rd effin round.

Geez…..so many people smarter than the coaches and GMs…..and so few jobs foe them!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Naw……we need Sammy Watkins!!! Someone who can consistently get open and do something good once he gets the ball….

Amen, stevek. It will be quite refreshing to see someone with a clue actually start the season at QB.

    JOE—

    Any word on Emanuel Sanders?

    Any word on Emanuel Sanders?

If there was you would be reading about it on JoeBucsFan.com. :)

    Joe wants him badly.

  14. d-money Says:

I have to agree with the previous commentors.

All we heard frm JOe the last few months is that the Bucs can’t win with the 4th best QB in the division.

Tell me Joe…exactly which QB in our division is McCown better than? The answer is none. We’re still sitting with the 4th Best QB the only difference is McCown has had 13 seasons to show what he’s got and we all pretty much kow what he’s about.

Glennon got 3 quarters of a season on an awful team and you’re ready to dump him.

Why is it all of a sudden the offense is in good hands even though we still have the 4th best QB?

  15. d-money Says:

    Sorry…9 seasons for McCown.

  16. panhandle buc Says:

    @JOE–

    Touche!!

I don’t think anyone should get their panties in a bunch until after the draft. Of course Lovie said McCown will be in the starting position, McCown would only go somewhere where he felt he had a good chance to start. Doesn’t mean it will be him at the end of preseason. As for Glennon, I would say he’s gone if we draft a qb, otherwise he’ll havae a chance in preseason to win the job.

I too am very skeptical of McCown. How many backups came in played great, only to get traded to another team and be terrible as their starter (or not start at all)? Cassel and Flynn come to mind recently..

Mcclown is a bum sick of trash qbs

    LOVE IT!

  21. MadMax Says:

entertaining to see those such as snook and joe take their cheap shots and name call Glennon (snook on that one)…it speaks more about you than it does for him and he’s done nothing but bust his tale for the team you’re a fan of! Unbelievable, but it is what it is….entertaining!

  22. MadMax Says:

and Im pulling for Josh, with his age and experience, I think we can use him wisely and allow Glennon another year to grow if he has the potential (which I think he does)

  23. lightningbuc Says:

McCown is now with his 8th team. Is there anyone he DOESN’T have an on-the-field link with?

  24. Evan Says:

How ironic is it that his little brother was one of our Qbs a while ago, and now he’s here. lol..We had jordan rodgers too, maybe that means Aaron Rodgers could be in our future lol jk.

  25. Patrick Says:

Hopefully this Josh is better than the previous Josh.

  26. $acbuc$ Says:

I’m starting to think we don’t have a clue about what a good QB looks like in Tampa. Prove me wrong! Brad Johnson was the best we had at quarterback in the last 38 years.. We coming up on 40 years old but we never had a glimpse of a FRANCHISE QUATERBACK. Dumb a$$!

    Dallas- Starbach, White, Aikman
    49ers- Montana, Young, Kap
    Pitt- Bradshaw, Ben
    Greenbay- Favre, Rodgers

    so on and so forth….etc

    COMEDY

  27. Kevin Says:

I will admit glennon had sloppy footwork, but he was accurate and I don’t know where him having a week arm comes from….he made some nice deep throws. It is what it is. McCown is the starter now and that is a better QB we have had in a LOOOOOOOOOONG time. Maybe Glennon wins it back or the QB we draft. Time will tell.

  28. teacherman Says:

Its a two year contract folks.

McCown is evolved. And on fire these days.

Glennon has the same fire and work ethic.

I think we have a win-win here. Glennon has time to beef up, strengthen his arm, study the game like Aaron Rodgers did, and he may get his shot to start in 2 years, as a 4th year vet.

McCown looked better than Cutler last year.

And the Chicago locker room was divided over Cutler vs. McCown.

I would take McCown over Cutler any day. And way cheaper.

We can have a great D. Run the ball. And win every game.

I am sad Revis is gone, but happy for him too. I hope he wins a SuperBowl.

Dom couldve waited til the Jets cut him last year, or we couldve waited for him to finish last season. Dom was impatient, and he cost us Sheldon Richardson, who wouldve perfect next to McCoy.

We also couldve waited a year on Jarius Byrd, instead of overpaying for Goldson, who will get cut next year, with Nicks and V-Jax.

We’re gonna have nice extra cash next year to sign McCoy.

Then, extend LaVonte next season too.

We will save almost 20 mil next season by cutting 3 old guys, Nicks, V-Jax, and Goldson.

We have a bright future boys!!!

  29. Sledd Says:

So much negative stuff on McCown; I watched him play last year and he was impressive; I’m excited to have him and confident he will do very well.

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m not sold on Cam, and Matty Ice hasn’t been taking over games lately. Drew Brees is by far the best in the division but McCown could be second. So I don’t buy 4′th best for him right now. The key as said earlier is that McCown has to turn opportunity and turnovers into TD’s, something Bigbird couldn’t do. If the Bucs can muster the #2 defense in the division and #2 offense, they could win 10 or 11 games and make the playoffs. All QBs in this division have been rattled by good defenses, even Mr Brees. I like all the moves made by the Bucs this week. Draft Defense or OT at 7 if you can’t trade the pick. I hope Manziel or Bridgewater is there and some team will sell the farm to move up to 7. We need more good players and not 5th or later round picks.

  31. tgregs Says:

Well Joe, since the end of the season you’ve been denouncing Glennon as the 4th best QB in the division. Where to you rank our new 35 year old career backup?

  32. Joe Says:

He would check in at No. 4

  33. Eric Says:

If, and it’s a big if, he could piece together an entire season like he played last year, could edge into number 3.

    Maybe.

  34. Bucarama1 Says:

Napoleon Glennon Dynamite is feeling the pressure now.. WE got the right Josh & The correct McCowen …Go Bucs …
