Backup Glennon Has No Job Security

March 12th, 2014

GlennonsackPanthersBuccaneers backup quarterback Mike Glennon’s Tampa Bay career will be in jeopardy if the Bucs draft a quarterback this spring.

Lovie Smith made it clear to Joe today that he’s not a three-quarterbacks kind of guy.

In fact, Lovie himself released Bucs new starter Josh McCown in Chicago in 2010. Lovie explained that move today by saying then Bears backup Jason Campbell just proved to be a little better than McCown. (Yes, that made Joe’s stomach turn a bit.)

“Sometimes you have to go in a certain direction. As a general rule, most teams keep two quarterbacks on the roster. We had Jason Campbell who is good player. The numbers really kind of got [McCown] as much as anything,” Lovie said of cutting McCown. “Even for us right now, the odds are we’re not going to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster and that’s what got Josh as much as anything. He did everything you need to do.”

And that brings Joe to Glennon. If the Bucs draft a QB, a strong likelihood given McCown’s age and the fact they’ve hired a renowned quarterbacks guru at offensive coordinator, then Glennon will be in big trouble.

No, Joe doesn’t hate Glennon. Joe thinks Glennon performed solidly in his role last season. He proved he can be a sound backup and win some football games. But Glennon isn’t Lovie’s guy. That’s just the cold reality of the NFL.

  1. Buc1987 Says:

Oh boy this is sure to rile the crowd Joe . Throws out the word “back up”.

Well atleast I won’t be bored anymore. Thanks Joe.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    “No, Joe doesn’t hate Glennon.”

To : MGM…. say that over and over and over about 10 times.

  3. IdahoBucsfan Says:

TROLLBUCSFAN. Don’t ya think this would be a more appropriate name for the site?

  4. Eric Says:

That Jason Campbell beating him out is sobering.

But I think Lovie is playing the thing about as well as he can, given the circumstances. He had to get a vet in here. Not much available to chose from.

If they draft a QB at 7, Glennon is through. He might get a chance to compete for backup against a QB taken later, but even that is doubtful because he wasn’t drafted by these guys.

Looks like he is a long shot to even make the roster unless the Bucs take no QB in this draft, which is unlikely.

  5. Jeagan1999 Says:

I see the “8-Hate” is still alive and well with Joe! Are you going to pitch a hissy and suck your thumb when The Bucs pass on Johnny Mancrush and MG8 beats out our journeyman starter, Joe?

  6. Patrick Says:

This is a joke. Why does McCown automatically get job security and Glennon doesn’t? Glennon was a rookie and people don’t even want to give him a chance. Oh, but if he was “drafted in the 1st round”, it’d be a different story.

  7. P'cola Buc Says:

Lovie appears to be a type of guy that goes with his gut. He really had no plan to ever keep Revis and I’m afraid the same fate will fall on Glennon. Schiano will find his “sweetheart” a job probably in New England. We will choose a QB in the 2nd round and Tedford will work with him for 2 years while McCowan holds down the fort.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

NFL Network had another Josh (Freeman) ranked higher on their list of available FA QB’s.

  9. Eric Says:

The GM said something today about a QB he likes that doesn’t get mentioned.

  10. lightningbuc Says:

    Chicago Bears South!

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

What would Glennon be worth on a trade? Maybe another third? I would think he would be worth more in a trade before the draft. Perhaps in a perfect world we would wait until our first pick to see if our QB is there, then make a draft day trade???

  12. Brandon Says:

There’s about a 98% chance that Mike Glennon will be on the trading block in the next 2 months. At least we can get something back for our wasted 3rd rounder from last season. I still have a strange feeling Brett Smith could be Licht’s ace in the hole, a QB nobody is talking about (in his own words). Marcus Arroyo recruited him and coached him very briefly at Wyoming. His Pro Day is tomorrow, it will be interesting if the Bucs send a rep (Of course, Wyoming has 2 other legit prospects in WR Robert Herron and CB Marquestion Huff).

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“This is a joke. Why does McCown automatically get job security and Glennon doesn’t?”

    ——–

Dollar dollar bill y’all. It’s always about the money. You can’t get a veteran backup for rookie 3rd round money.

  14. Mr. T Says:

As I posted earlier when they brought Josh in and gave him the starting job with no competition needed that it implied that the new regime had no faith in Glennon and that also meant we were drafting a QB and it might very well be at 7 if one of the big name guys falls to us, well it appears that is what is going to happen. Whether they take one at 7 or later Glennon’s future here looks bleak. I still think MG will be a good QB but it appears it will be with another team, hope I’m wrong but this looks like how it’s playing out.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I really thought that the statements that 50% of our roster would be gone was an exaggeration. Now I’m starting to think that it may be more.

  16. Bucfan282938 Says:

I think both of them suck. We need a decent qb not an old guy who can only play a certain system and def not big bird (Glennon). Maybe we should trade up and get a qb, Manziel seems like the best candidate. He’s mobile and can make plays, kind of like Russell Wilson but a little bit bigger

  17. bee Says:

    @patrick

No…If Glennon was good it’d be a different story. Draft status had little to do with this decision, while talent had everything to do with this. If he was as skilled as Wilson or Kaepernick drafted in the 3rd round we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Face the facts man, Glennon isn’t good. And the professionals that have been doing this longer than you and I agree.

  18. mark2001 Says:

Most fans thought we were a talented team last year and the Dom was a good GM…hope this brings about a realistic perspective for some at least…and maybe higher expectations of people doing their jobs properly.

And that brings me to Glennon…let the guy compete….let McCown compete…let whomever we draft compete, and let the best man win…all the rest is BS.

  19. lightningbuc Says:

Nothing instills confidence like a coach referring to the QB as “the starting person”, who then, in turn, refers to the immortal Jason Campbell as a “good player”.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

    lmao@lightningbuc

  21. bucrightoff Says:

“Rex Grossman is my quarterback” – Lovie Smith…

Anyways I’m not sure what trading Glennon does, suggesting he has no shot to develop into a starting QB is absurd considering not many guys had better rookie seasons last year or many years. Someone with the time to give him maybe a year might end up with a very nice QB. Why can’t Tedford do it? Drafting a QB, in round 1 especially, invites controversy after Lovie has already chose his quarterback. He doesn’t want a controversy, he wants his quarterback.

  22. NY Buc Says:

It really is amazing how much disdain this kid gets? He stepped into a less than ideal situation and did pretty darned good. It’s pretty obvious that unless Lovie/Licht just signed you/extended your contract or your last name isn’t McCoy or David then nobody is totally safe.

I am somewhat petty, a ball buster, and prone to getting intoxicated at times…I will make it a point to remind my fellow Bucs fans of Mike Glennon the best franchise QB they helped run out of town when he goes to the Patriots and succeeds (as Brady’s successor) LOL

  23. BamBamBuc Says:

It’s not just “people” not wanting to give Glennon a chance. It’s coaches too, and NFL personnel. If it was just the fans, I’d say he has a shot to be “the guy” given proper coaching and direction. Being that it’s coaches too, I have to believe that what has been said about his shortcomings all along by “people” are starting to show some merit.

  24. NY Buc Says:

damn I made the well documented mistake here or spelling out the name of a particular QB that plays on the Patriots who’s last name was part of a TV show from the 70′s (hint the word Bunch came after that), so my post will be forever lost in limbo. Oh well, probably just as well…just more pro-Glennon/MGM ranting on my part. Show ‘em all Mike.

  25. Glennon2K15 Says:

Glennon was never given a chance man, with the terrible offensive playcalling he still managed to throw 19 touchdowns to one and a half wide receivers and a tight end.

  26. gatrbuc17 Says:

Joe, I respect you for what you’ve built here. But doesn’t the McCown signing show you that we will Not be taking a QB at no.7??? Jeeeesh Joe we have Lovie freakin Smith here. You really think he trusts Ted enough to say………………PICK your QB Man I got full control!! ……..?

  27. Destinjohnny Says:

long season boys alot can happen. mike will be fine

  28. gatrbuc17 Says:

I mean Jay Cutler and Sexy Rexy……………..Need i say more??
Lovie aint reachin for anything less than Luck and there aren’t any here

  29. Kaput Says:

Glennon’s a mid level quarterback at absolute best.

Why are some of you mad?

  30. gatrbuc17 Says:

Gosh I miss the water in Destin!!

  31. Patrick Says:

Glennon threw for 2600 yards, 19 TDs, 9 ints, 59.4 CMP% with an 83.9 passer rating all in a matter of 13 games with major injuries to our offense and using 3 different RBs throughout the year along with bad coaching. And some of you guys think he’s horrible.

    How was Freeman’s rookie season?

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Nobody knows jack shyte about what the next move is going to be. I say they run with McGown, Glennon and Kafka in training camp. The best man wins. Most likely McCown will have an edge coming into camp of course, because he’s who THEY picked. There really is no one out there in free agency but McGown that is any decent.

I say they are just gobbling up everything they can. They are going to throw it at the wall and hope some of it sticks. McCown and Glennon included in the QB competition.

  33. Patrick Says:

Just give the kid a freakin chance is all I’m saying.

  34. BFFL Says:

I doubt Glennon is worried, there are many NFL teams that would love to have his services. Besides don’t read too much into what Lovie says right now. He will start the QB that wins the job. Don’t forget that Lovie had to promise McCown something that sounded good to recruit him.

  35. gatrbuc17 Says:

Im as HAPPY as can be Kaput. This means we are Almost Completely out of the Johnny Football sweepstakes. My fanhood would be in jeopardy if we draft that kid.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Patrick…sing with me : “All we are saying is give him a chance.”

I think Mike will be just fine man. It’s a long season and I don’t think we’ve heard the last from Glennon.

  37. Kaput Says:

As long as they spend close to the salary cap, I’ll be fine. If they’re closer to 20 million under than they are 10 million under, I’m out. I can’t take the cheap bastards any longer.

Yes, we spend money on a few splash players, but then quietly gut the roster to be 24 million under the cap. Ugly, and predictable.

  38. Patrick Says:

@Buc1987……….Now I want to go listen to some John Lennon tunes

  39. mike norris Says:

glennon will be fine. He did plenty with no line , no 2 or 3 reciever and a 3rd string rb. There will be many suitors if the bucs give up on him. Not to mention he is getting paid less than 500k a year.

  40. PRBucFan Says:

    He’ll get a chance in the pre-season…

  41. Jordan Says:

McCown was a terrible college QB (51.2 completion%) and an equally bad starting QB through his first decade in the NFL 57.9% 37 TDs to 44 INT. For comparison’s sake, this is worse than Josh Freeman’s tenure in Tampa Bay. Mike Glennon WILL beat McCown for the starting job.

  42. INDYbucsfan Says:

Hahaha who cares. May the best man win.

  43. rdbucfan Says:

Way to go Lovie, gift a career back up the starting job. We still have the 4th best QB in the division. Wait who are the backups in NC, Nola and Hotlanta. We may have the 7th best QB in the division.

Not so mad about Revis not wanting to negotiate with a man named Lovie.

  44. thegregwitul Says:

Now this is a situation where there should be a trade market for Mike Glennon. He is signed under an affordable rookie contract and flashed potential during his time as a starter. I don’t see him ever being a star, and he may very well have a ceiling as an average starter or very good backup, but if the Bucs go QB in the first three rounds, they should look to move Glennon for a draft pick, especially since they only have five picks right now. I wouldn’t be against that move.

I’m telling you right now, this regime is intent on washing out all things Schiano from the organization. Hopefully that doesn’t include Rutgers man Timothy Wright, who played well last year and could prove to be a nice weapon on offense.

  45. Aubpierce Says:

The Bucs would be foolish to draft a QB in the first round. As of now there are only two real starters on the offensive line and poor back ups.You must draft two offensive line positions and sign two in free agency. Not sure if Williams will fit in with Lovie, and he is injured and expensive. So now you need at least two receivers to enhance the offense. With all these needs Lovie can’t spare a draft pick, that’s why he found one in free agency.

  46. dre-day Says:

hey guys.. i’m a guy who doesn’t always agree with joe here.. but i gotta say… mike glennon is a glorified 3rd qb.. its the simple truth… you wanna know how to neutralize mike glennon? make him roll to his non throwing side aka make him roll to his left. he can’t throw a pass running to that side. and almost every single time he did roll left, he simply threw the ball out of bounds. look at all the game film on him. tape does not lie. sorry glennon fans, but womp womp womp for you guys. please get us another qb to go with mccown.

  47. PRBucFan Says:

Jordan he WILL NOT lol, McCown unless unseated by a 1st round draft pick was paid and brought in under the condition that he would start.

    Sorry broski

  48. Old*Skool*BucFan Says:

Lol…wow, you FAN-ATICS are a joke. This team went 4-12 and you clowns are acting like Glennon took you guys to the playoffs or as if he played lights-out all last year. This is the new-age NFL, where coaches have 2-3 years max to make the playoffs. Lovie just got fired after going 10-6, do you think he has time to B.S. with what-ifs. You FAN-ATICS can cry all you want on this message board, these coaches and GMs have to make moves and quick. Do you see all the impact players we just signed in 2 days? Lovie knows we better be a playoff team by 2015 or else. I would rather have McCown start and draft a promising QB, then stick with someone I don’t have a good gut-feeling about. BTW, Joe is a funny guy the pics, captions, and headliners give me a laugh everyday. First you all cried a river over Freeman, now you wanna riot over Glennon. Get over it…

  49. Rrsrq Says:

One thing we can say bout L & L, they may show some of the cards but never all of them

  50. Buc1987 Says:

    lol Patrick

  51. Eric Says:

This guy ran Revis out, he won’t have the slightest hesitation in waiving Glennon.

He’s through. It’s a never gonna happen fairy tail right with Randy Hedberg and Chuck Fusina.

You don’t wine and dine Josh McCown if you have a shred of confidence in your starter.

They’ve seen the film. It’s over

  52. Jordan Says:

The more I dig, the worse it gets. Our “starter” has never started more than 13 games in a season. He’s averaged 3.45 starts per year.

  53. Buc1987 Says:

    PRBuc…leave him alone. lol

  54. Rrsrq Says:

Glennon would’ve lasted to the the 4th or 5th round, Schiano just wanted to dump Freeman so bad he jumped the gun to soon.

  55. Kevin Says:

If Glennon clearly looks better than McCown I expect him to get the job. If anything this will push Glennon and piss him off a little. We’ll get to see how he handles it. I mean if McCown comes out and just flat out sucks whoever else we have will get the start. McCown looked good last year. Better than cutler. If it were McCown and Cutler on the market I’d take McCown so at least were in better shape than the bears. And we have Lovies defense. Works for me. Just need some receivers. Bring in Decker

  56. The Real Drew Says:

The Cardinals signed Ted Larsen, good riddance.

  57. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ PR

I agree. McCown will be the starter unless we draft a QB in the first round. But It should get interesting, I think a QB just might fall to us. Praying its on little Johnny.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

Rrsrq…actually Glennon was graded 3rd rnd by a lot of draft analysts coming out. Some did say 3-5 as well though.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

McCown, Glennon and Kafka in training camp.

  60. Buc Bob Says:

If McCown goes down, I would feel a hell of a lot better with Glennon on the bench, than a newly drafted rookie!

  61. The Real Drew Says:

La Confora says the Saffold deal was voided because he didn’t pass physical. Boneheaded not to sign Veldheer.

  62. Jordan Says:

PRBUCFAN – have you looked at his numbers? Advanced Metrics? Josh McCown’s 5 game stint in 2013 was a complete anomaly. His very own coach cut him in favor of Jason Campbell. Since being cut by Lovie he has started a total of 5 games. This confirms that these 5 games alone changed Lovie’s outlook on McCown. This means that the difference between “inferior to Jason Campbell” to “bonafide starter” is 5 good games…. against 4 of the worst defenses in the NFL.

  63. Trubucfan22 Says:

Are you people dull? McCown isn’t the qb of the future. He’s the qb for now. The qb of the future will be announced as the 7th pick of the 2014 nfl draft. Glennon is long gone after today’s presser. Clearly lovie is not a glennon fan. And for good reason. Glennon was he worst qb on third down conversions in the league. You can win games when you can’t win on third down.

  64. Thomas Says:

Said it before and I will say it again. Bucs draft a Qb in Rd 1 of the draft. That Qb and Mcown will be the Qbs on the team and Glennon will b traded to somewhere else for a pick in this year’s draft.

Mcown throws picture perfect passes and can hit a Wr in mid stride down the field. I watched all his games with the bears and he should have been 5-0 but the bears defense was horrible last year. It got so bad that as a fan I was hoping the other team could score fast just so the bears could go back out on offense and win it at the end.

  65. The Real Drew Says:

Sign Collins and then try to trade Penn to Raiders.

  66. feelthepewterpower Says:

off topic…Saffold failed his physical…maybe we can get him for less money now?????

    —————————————————————————————-
C’mon man, do you seriously think Lovie wants to get rid of Barron, David, Banks on D? Martin or Glennon on O? Hell Spence and Gholston looked good at times as well. News flash…every one of those guys is a Schiano pick too.

  68. rdbucfan Says:

I can see the conversation between Revis and Lovie.

Revis: So Lovie you want me to take less money so you can make Josh McCown your starter?

Lovie: Yes, didn’t you see what he did for Chicago last year?

Revis: as a matter of fact I did see him play for Chicago. Mark Sanchez took me to 2 AFC championship games and Josh is no better than Mark. Heeeeelllll no I’m not taking a pay cut to make a career back up the starting QB. The only cut I’ll take is from this roster.

  69. bee Says:

Glennon had 13 chances, what did he do that was so special? It certainly wasn’t winning or making his teammates better… He’ll have more chances. Hopefully with another team though.

  70. PRBucFan Says:

    Jordan

All the advanced metrics in the world wouldn’t make a difference now, they have decided and Glennon is the weakest link… Goodbye

    @87 :P lol

  71. That Guy Says:

Glennon sucks balls and got his job because Gregory had a boner for the kid coming out of high school. Offense was dead last in the league under Glennon.

  72. Jordan Says:

Ah yes, a relevant and timely “weakest link” reference. Let me guess, you live by the motto “stats are for losers!”.

  73. passthebuc Says:

Ala Steve Young. Guy’s like joe will run him out of town just to have Belichick pick him up off our scrap heap and turn him into the back up for the last few years of Brady’s reign and then turn him into the super bowl contender for the next 10 years/

Just because you write Joe, does not mean you can evaluate talent. If I’m not mistaken you christened our previous GM with the ROCK-STAR MONIKER.

First, Joe doesn’t run anyone out of town. Joe has no such powers. Second, the “rockstar” nickname was born in 2010 after Dominik made a long string of national appearances after media celebrated his draft. Joe doesn’t give up on a nickname just because some hate it and don’t understand its origins. –Joe

  74. PRBucFan Says:

No I live by the motto that Lovie and Licht have already looked at everything and done their own research and they are long pass the stage of hypothesizing whether he is or isn’t worth it…. They already went out and made it happen ;)

  75. oldfart44 Says:

I hate to admit it, but I will always associate Glennon with Schiano. It would not bother me if he goes. I don’t think he is particularly good.

Perhaps, the new regime wants to wash away as much of the previous incompetents as possible.

    There, I said it.

  76. PRBucFan Says:

    past*

  77. Buc1987 Says:

    rdbucfan…throw away your Revis jersey.

Trubuc….I don’t think there is going to be a QB taken at all in this years draft.

  78. thegregwitul Says:

@NY Buc: When I say the new regime wants to scrub out all traces of Greg Schiano, I’m referring more to the ‘Schiano Men’ on the team. Again, some of those guys will stick with the Bucs as they are talented, but others seemed to be pet projects of Greg that don’t have a place with this new regime, and it’s very possible that Mike Glennon is one of those guys. After all, Schiano was chasing the kid all the way back to Glennon’s high school days. If a team offers a 3rd round pick for Glennon, pull the trigger.

  79. MichiganBucsFan Says:

Am I the only one, or does anyone else believe that Josh McCown was signed to make up for the fact that his brother Luke was cut in favor of (The Worst Starting QB Of All Time) Byron Leftwich? I still to this day can’t get the bad taste out of my mouth from that terrible excuse of a football player. Josh, tell Luke we’re sorry!!!

  80. Jordan Says:

There was a reason Lovie was unemployed last year. OFFENSE!!! During his 8 year stint with the Bears, his team was the 19th ranked in offensive scoring. I’m not suggesting that Licht and Lovie didn’t research. I’m suggesting that Lovie has a track record of poor offensive performance under his watch. Just like McCown has a long track record of being a lackluster QB.

  81. passthebuc Says:

Glennon did fine. Glennon would not be out of work for 2 days. Many talent Guru’s understand that Glennons results were nothing more than the reflection of A. bad coaching and B. a terrible O line. The will be licking their chops knowing that the new Buc’s regime has no offensive understanding and will eventually Jettison Glennon. There goes another Steve Young.

  82. bucrightoff Says:

Some of the hate here for Glennon is a bit much. You’d think he was Cade McNown or Jimmy Clausen or JaMarcus bad. And after 13 games some of seen enough, but with zero games from any upcoming rookies, are convinced will become franchise QBs. Since you are able to predict the future I’d like some lottery numbers please. Aubpierce already mentioned it but there are more pieces to this roster to add besides a QB and McCown is Lovie’s quarterback. Drafting a 1st rounder is guaranteed QB controversy.

  83. MichiganBucsFan Says:

I still believe that Josh was signed to make amends with the McCown family for the travesty that occured to his brother. Yes you remember what I’m talking about, when Luke McCown was cut in favor of (The Worst Starting QB in History) Byron Leftwich. Still to this day have a bad taste in my mouth from that one.

    Josh, tell Luke we’re sorry!!!!!

  84. ElioT Says:

Even if we draft Joe’s “Man Crush” Johnny Football, we’ll still have three of the worst QBs in the NFC South.

Joe(s), you are a card carrying Mike Glennon hater and it’s getting old dudes. I almost hope the Bucs do draft this midget D-Bag so you can eat (most likely spin) your own words. Go Bucs!

Dude, Joe doesn’t hate Glennon. Get real. The kid played well for a third-round pick. Showed he belongs in the NFL. Joe has NEVER written anything to the contrary. –Joe

And it definitely doesn’t impact the fact that they have made a choice ;)

Where do you see that Penn was released?
    ————————————————————-

haven’t seen it officially announced but
per Jason La Canfora Penn is now a free agent:

The Oakland Raiders need a left tackle after free-agent signee OT Rodger Saffold (Rams) failed his physical Wednesday, March 12. The team could pursue free-agent OT Donald Penn (Buccaneers).

  94. Cmurda Says:

If anyone is upset over Revis being dumped, imagine yourself a Raiders fan. Yeah, it worked for me too.

  95. bucrightoff Says:

    Here’s the actual tweet

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora 56 mins
With Raiders suddenly without a left tackle, should the Bucs sign Collins and cut Donald Penn, I could see them being all over that

  96. Macabee Says:

Penn has not been released. Someone misunderstood a tweet from La Canfora that suggested that the Raiders would be interested in Penn IF the Bucs were to release him because the Roger Saffold deal fell through due to a failed physical.

The Bucs should not release Penn because he has trade potential. And If you ask me Anthony Collins is no upgrade over Penn when he’s in shape to play!

  97. b.Bruce Says:

Please draft Blake or Mr. Football.I’m sure they wont

  98. Andrew 1 Says:

It just irritates the hell out of me to hear people say he’s nothing but a back up. First of all, he will no longer be a back up once he starts next season. Second of all, I guess its impossible that he has improved enough over his many years of experience and under the tutelage of QB guru to ever think he could be a starter. Yea, because thats never happened before (sarcasm). Yes, I know, he is not the hall of fame QB we all want, but he is a solid short term solution to our QB problem. Sometimes you got to make the best out of a bad situation, and thats what we did by signing McCown. It was a good signing.

  99. b.Bruce Says:

all I’ve ever wanted since I started watching the Bucs is a top-five franchise quarterback I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.not that Johnny or Blake is a guaranteed franchise quarterback but please take a shot.

  100. PRBucFan Says:

“should the Bucs sign Collins and cut Donald Penn” is how it actually read lol

    He’s still a Buc

  101. chipbuc Says:

I guess the collective football minds of Lovie , Licht , Tedford are all wrong in their film study of Glennons games last year. If they thought Glennon was capable of being the starter next year, McCown would not be here. I think i will trust their judgment, before i trust would be GMs on this board!!!!!

  102. Macabee Says:

Collins is playing ends against the middle. I don’t want this guy. I’d rather take my chances with Penn. Get rid of the damn ball quicker and Penn is good to go. lol

  103. feelthepewterpower Says:

That’s good….I’d rather keep Penn at LT than add Collins…but trust the Buccs will make the right decision.

  104. yossarian Says:

McCown has the job for now. Let’s see what happens out of training camp. It’s a different situation, but the Seahawks didn’t let the guaranteed money Flynn received stop them from playing Wilson, who outplayed Flynn in camp. Glennon will probably get a shot in camp. I think this actually signals the Bucs will see if they can land a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. Glennon is probably the odd msn out, but I think he gets a shot. Based on the signings and based on the division, I think the Bucs go defense in the 1st round. They seem to be very happy with the front 4 and the secondary. I think they would love to get another stellar LB.Lovie had outstanding LBs in Chicago. The Bucs could still use another LB who can drop into coverage and deal with TEs and slot WRs. I think Lovie covets Mack.

  105. lion Says:

McCown is not an upgrade over Glennon. They played to similar abilities last year. He was brought here for competition. Lovie obviously had to tell McCown that he was his guy in order to get him to sign.

  106. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ yossarian

“It’s a different situation, but the Seahawks didn’t let the guaranteed money Flynn received stop them from playing Wilson, who outplayed Flynn in camp.”

You’re right, and that certainly could happen in this situation too. If your a Glennon fan, that’s something you could hope for. I also think he will get a shot, but I dont think he will beat out McCown.

  107. PRBucFan Says:

    ^^^ False

  108. PRBucFan Says:

that was to the guy above you A1 lol

  109. SAMCRO Says:

The Texans didn’t kick the tires on in any of the FA QB’s, so now they look like a lock to either stand pat with Yates, Schaub, and Keenum, or they still could select a QB with the first pick. if so probably Bortles

Jacksonville dealt Gabbert to the 49er’s and have only Henne under contract but are in need of a backup. They have also stayed away from FA, so that can only mean they probably will want to select a QB with their pick.

and the Browns just dumped Weeden and Campbell, so that gives them only Brian Hoyer without a backup. My bet! is they want to select Manziel in the first round if he’s still available.

Let’s see the Raiders didn’t make any offers for a QB in FA, so now they will either go into the season with Terrelle Pryor/Matt McGloin. My bet is they select a QB with their first pick if one of the top three are still available.

I could be wrong but from the way free agency has gone, it looks like the Bucs will get shutout of the big 3 QB derby, unless they move up.

  110. Lou. Says:

Let’s be real — McCown was needed to show the veterans that the new coach isn’t wasting their time with rookie kidnergarten. But the Bucs did spend $5 mill to get the 4th best qback in the division.

  111. Buc1987 Says:

There really is no other FA QB’s for them to get this year. McCown probably is the best that’s out there. It’s a “value”signing.

  112. WalkdaPlank Says:

I have no problem with the McCown signing. He seems like an older version of Glennon, heck he is even a 3rd round QB. If he can win us games and put Joes “4th best” garbage to rest you won’t see me complaining. But I don’t think the Bucs are done QB shopping, the draft is still 2 months away. McCown is not a long-term answer.

  113. White Tiger Says:

Now the Glennonites know what it feels like…

…besides, this guy has the slowest release in the NFL…you don’t fix that with coaching…just what is it this team owes him?

  114. Sqeeky Says:

Yes Joe’s you and a certain un-named radio commentator (who writes under an allies here) should fell really glad that you helped to effectively end the career. Who wouldn’t want there friends and supporters referred to as members of a mob or mobsters. How dumb do you think Lovey is when he is told about the constant calling for Schaino’s job and for the demotion of Glennon on this site and on the radio (Joe Buc’s Hour also). Just this afternoon after the spot with the new GM, the host gloated that it was him and Joe Buc that had been saying Glennon had to go. (check the tape) The kid did all he was ask to do with the talent around him and some of these idiots can find nothing to do except make fun of his looks and call him Schiano’s boy. Try calling some other players boy. To bad he will not get a chance to compete for the job because Lovey knows the pen is mightier than the sword (he remembers Chicago all too well). Joe may censer this but I have at least been able to express it. I’m probably not along when I say I have lost confidence in you joe’s about being fair with your comments and comparisons of players. When did Joe’s call for Freeman to be a back up QB? Oh that’s right they didn’t. Nuff said enjoy your new starting QB and whill your at it encourage Lovey to bring back the other Josh. I know one person still wants him back here.

You really are taking all kinds of leaps. That was very entertaining. First, Joe is the kind of fan who cheers on game day with 100 percent effort, but Joe does not pretend to think a player is worthy of being a starter when he’s not. Sorry. Second, if you have a problem with Steve Duemig’s commentary, call his show and tell him. Third, Joe has no such powers to influence coaches and personnel decisions. Don’t be silly. Yeah, like Lovie Smith cares what Joe thinks. As for Freeman, he was a No. 1 pick that showed impressive signs in his rookie year and then exploded to the cusp of NFL elite in 2010, all before he was as old as rookie Mike Glennon. Joe surely would have called for Freeman to be a backup if he thought the Bucs had a sound option to do better. Joe repeatedly wrote about Freeman’s horrendous record against winning teams and his sad record as a starter. All the record are on this page in Joe’s archives. –Joe

  115. Sqeeky Says:

    Feel not fell

  116. stanglassman Says:

I think we are going to draft Aaron Murray unless Bridgewater drops to us in the 1st or Carr in the 2nd. One of those two would get the start over McCown but Murray would most likely get a year in the system and recover fully but if it goes down like this than Glennon will be looking for a backup job elsewhere.

  117. PRBucFan Says:

No lol Free Free sucked beyond belief.

Glennon is leaps and bounds better than Free Free.

Free got the boot because he was horrid.

The Glennonites and the Freemanites situations are not comparable.

    Nice try though ;)

  118. White Tiger Says:

…again, slow release, slow feet, darling of Schiannana, the ONLY place this kid could start was in Tampa, and only AFTER cutting the starter.

…we’ll let the career numbers speak for themselves.

    Now, Glennon can’t even start…here.

So, what exactly does this team owe Napolean Dynamite?

  119. PRBucFan Says:

    None of that matter Ms.Cleo

Your Free Free got cut and BENCHED because he was worse that the guy your describing BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

That does not bode well for how horrible he must of been to have been booted to the curb over this horrible guy your describing…

To top it off he came in and won 4 games which Free Free would have NEVER done with the crap shoot HISTORICALLY bad mess he’s turned in to.

Funny how he’s still on the street…

Bitter isn’t better Ms.Cleo, but i’m glad you cam out the rock you were hiding under after your boy Free Free got exposed for the garbage he was.

    Welcome Back :D

  120. Dan Says:

Vick still could land somewhere on a team drafting before us, even free

  121. flmike Says:

Read a great line yesterday, the reason Lovie signed McCown is, “he already knows Lovie’s Tampa 2 Offense…”.

  122. Bob Digital Says:

When is the last time a team went into training camp with a qb”competition” and ended up in the playoffs? and don’t say Matt Flynn, cuz he has always been terrible aside from one game.

I’m surely not a fan of the lesser of two (or three) evils approach to qb, but the Bucs didn’t have much of a choice

  123. Barry Says:

Lovie Smith is who we thought he was, an incompetent when it comes to the Quarterback postion. Pays a washed up 35 year old career backup as our starter. Don’t even start to pretend you’re happy with this. Let’s be honest, Grossman would be an upgrade over McCown. Nice FA pickups then BOOM, it’s Lovie time (McCown) Pathetic. The Dungy coaching tree DNA; Don’t know s$it about quarterbacks. Fast forward to end of next season…… Fans; McCown sucks. Get used to it.

  124. The_Buc_Realist Says:

If Joe was told at this time last year that Freeman would be out of the league and the Bucs Starter would be Josh McCown, he would have put his head thru a wall. the NFL year is very long and much can happen.

  125. Eric Says:

And who else besides Mcown was Lovie supposed to sign at QB?

Or did you want no experience, aside from Glennon, on the Bucs roster of QB’s?

  126. NewTampaChris Says:

Enough with Glennon! So many of your posts with him as a topic fall under the category of “This post is pure speculation on our part.” Yes, Glennon ran the #32 offense. Josh McCown is a journeyman backup (see: Brian Griese and Jeff Garcia). Another QB will be drafted, probably in the 3rd round. Some competition is better than none. But none of these guys are any good – we still have the fourth-best QB in the division, no matter who it is.

  127. Eric Says:

We won the division with Jeff Garcia and he went to the pro bowl that year.

    I’ll take that.

  128. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah, but Jeff Garcia had proven himself over many years and McCown hasn’t. Jeff Garcia was an NFL starter for 5 full seasons. McCown has started exactly 1 full season. McCown played well last year no doubt, but I think a lot of QBs could with Trestman, Marshall and Jeffrey.

  129. Bucsfanman Says:

I don’t think that the signing of a career back-up means anything more than that the position has been upgraded. I don’t know how you can draw any other conclusion than that.
Someone called picking Glennon in the 3rd round a “wasted pick.” I guess Dan Orlovsky would’ve done better?! Jordan Rodgers?! I’d say we got more out of Glennon than could’ve been expected.
If your going to give your opinion folks, invest some intellect in what you’re saying.
The Bucs got better. Leave it at that.
    Go Bucs!!!

  130. wombat Says:

    @joe
“As for Freeman, he was a No. 1 pick that showed impressive signs in his rookie year and then exploded to the cusp of NFL elite in 2010, all before he was as old as rookie Mike Glennon.”

So now it’s Glennons fault that he stayed in college and worked at a 3.8GPA? I think Joe is just a hater, thats all…..

Where exactly is Joe a “hater?” Perhaps the Glennon Mob members are “haters” for not wanting a better quarterback for the team? See how ludicrous that sounds? It’s makes as much sense as claiming Joe hates Glennon. –Joe

  131. Bucfan#37 Says:

I don’t think the Bucs will draft a QB in the first round, possibly a later round. I think they have addressed the position to their liking and feel McCown and Glennon plus a lower round pick will be sufficient, and I agree with this approach. The Bucs and Lovie are geared defensively first.

  132. wombat Says:

I have no problem in drafting a QB. I just can’t see how McCown is an upgrade, and has been anointed the job? I can understand him wanting to be a starter, I would be disappointed if any QB on the Bucs didn’t want to be! Just don’t be naive that this 34yr old journeyman is the next Rich Gannon or Kurt Warner….

  133. Sqeeky Says:

@Joe I have call Duemig and complained. Gave you ever notice that he yells over people then cuts them off and then makes fun of them like calling them something like “Mobsters” , oh that reminds me of some other people. If “Journey man” takes us to the promise land I’ll admit I was wrong about him, if not will you admit you were wrong?

Joe’s always pleased let his record stand. –Joe

  134. PRBucFan Says:

    What record? lol

  135. BoJim Says:

    Eric Said:

“And who else besides Mcown was Lovie supposed to sign at QB?

Or did you want no experience, aside from Glennon, on the Bucs roster of QB’s?”

Agree. Not really any other FA QBs out there. I’m sure Lovie will address that in the later rounds. Just needed a stop gap for a year or so.
