Bucs Sign Alterraun Verner

March 11th, 2014

It’s a four-year deal

He’s 25, lightning fast, a Pro Bowl cornerback, and now he’s a Buccaneer. The Bucs have signed former Titans CB Alterraun Verner, who hasn’t missed a game in his four seasons in Tennessee and had five picks last year and made his first trip to Hawaii.

NFL Network is reporting it’s a four-year deal for $26.5 million and $14 million guaranteed.

It seems the Bucs got off cheap, and it sure seems like Darrelle Revis is a goner — unless Lovie Smith wants the meanest nastiest secondary in the NFL.

Verner was a bit of a salary cap casualty in Tennessee. The Titans already had cornerback Jason McCourty on the books at $8.6 million per year, plus safety Michael Griffin eats up $8 million of their cap.

This is an excellent signing, and so far today the Bucs have jacked up their pass rush two notches with DT Clinton McDonald and DE Michael Johnson, and added a proven corner in Verner. Not bad at all.

But what about the offense?

It’s going to take a lot more than an average tight end, the Bucs signed Brandon Myers today, and (maybe tomorrow) Josh McCown to raise the 32nd-ranked offense from the dead.

    Bye bye Revis

  2. clafollett Says:

    Bye Bye Revis, Hello Alterraun!!!

  3. Eric Says:

That Lovie Smith is such an idiot……..

  4. Mike Says:

Starting to believe again…..bucs are making huge moves on day 1! Going to be a new team and the bucs won’t stop tonight.

  5. Glennon Mob Says:

omg. that just saved us 10 mil

  6. kh Says:

    Bye Bye Leonard Johnson

  7. Rrsrq Says:

This makes Revis medicine go down so much better! Lovie and Licht had a plan, I heard the rumors but didn’t think that would get done

  8. Harry Says:

This looks good. But it shows that it is all but guaranteed that Revis is now gone; probably cut tomorrow and we get nothing. How f-ing embarrassing.

  9. clafollett Says:

I like this signing…. not sure I’m missing Revis much now. Way to go L&L!!!! Great move and an awesome price!

  10. Jeagan1999 Says:

Now I don’t feel quite so bad about letting Revis go (except for the draft picks). At least Revis wasn’t owed any guaranteed money…that helps a bit.

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Yeah, no way we would ever want to have 2 Pro Bowl corners. I mean, no team in our division employs more than one guy on a passing route, so we will be in great shape.

  12. bucbucbuc Says:

He was in my math class at UCLA (advanced math, I was an engineer). Super smart and humble guy, worked hard and came to class every day. Excited he’s a BUC!!!!

  13. clafollett Says:

    @Harry,

Try to look at the positive, at least we get our 3rd pick back.

  14. finishers Says:

HELL YES!!!! great price good player

  15. @caEric Says:

Mark Barron is the real big winner here….he sold #24 to Revis (rented for a year) and now he can get it back…….

  16. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Any word on McCown?

  17. buchead407 Says:

He’s no Revis. Quit fooling yourself

  18. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Damn…is there ANYWAY we can still keep Revis? Can you say OFFENSE in the draft? Now just pull in Collins.

  19. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Huge day, what a great way to start over! Darrelle Mevis we hardly knew ya!

Fix this mess Lovie, and Be a Legend!!!

    Great day in Tampa Bay!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  20. clafollett Says:

    @buchead407,

And he’s not getting paid like Revis either. I’d rather have a team full of above average players than a team with a 1-2 great players and everyone else below par.

  21. buccanAy Says:

this how professional, experienced “regimes” work…OUTSTANDING!!!

  22. Jarrett Says:

Great no. 2 corner. But there is ONLY 1 REVIS!!! KEEP THEM BOTH. RESTRUCTURE A NEW DEAL NEXT SEASON!

  23. Patrick Says:

Good signing. So how much cap room do we have left after today?

  24. Daffy Buc Says:

Love light know what they r doing!! Verner is a top ten corner for less than 7 m. Mevis couldn’t slow any dolphin or saints receiver down. Only reason he got the int against Miami was Tannehill threw into triple coverage. Love light are gonna kill it with more cap space!!

  25. ryan Says:

I hope verner realizes he will not be wearing #20 ik tampa….

  26. Bucfan282938 Says:

Josh McCown is a joke. He’s 34 and had a few food games against sorry teams. I’m with joe on trying to get a qb in the draft or building that O-Line. Definitely don’t need a sorry old back up qb starting here

  27. sethb22 Says:

    Joe…

How you feel about Tillman as the #2 Corner?

    Tillman…2-3/yr
    M. Johnson….8.5/yr
    Verner…6/yr
    Macdonald…3/yr

    or Revis?

    This has been great day.

  28. BucsfaninChina Says:

He is 25, went to the Pro Bowl, and earning less than $7 mil a year. This is what you call a slam dunk.

  29. Trubucfan22 Says:

Omg we still have the cap space to keep Revis! Revis and verner, it would be impossible to throw against our secondary!

  30. Eric Says:

This guy is younger, faster, and better than Revis. And if we get Peanut we do have two pro bowlers at corner.

    Brilliantly played Mr. Smith.

Great day to be a Bucs fan!

  31. The Real Drew Says:

I guess we need to look at it like this, if you cut Revis and sign Evan Deitrich Smith and Collins, then its like your getting a second round type guy in Smith and a maybe a second round type guy in Collins, or something along those lines.

  32. Kevin Says:

Nice….but Revis is still leaving. Why not those two and banks covering all of those 3 WR sets against New Orleans……Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa why do that then we might actually win!!! Forgot I’m a Bucs fan and need to get used to the yearly disappointment.

  33. clafollett Says:

    @sethb22,

Yup, I think its a GREAT DAY!!! I like most all these signings for far. That math works for me. That is called depth!

  34. Kansasbuc Says:

This is AWESOME but I still want Revis. Just ONE more year please!!!!

  35. Shawnbucfan Says:

4 players for the price of one . Enough said …

  36. deminion Says:

Verner!!!! Funny cuz ppl was on here complaining abt Lovie and licht u think Lovie took a yr off to destroy a team lol ? I knew they had a plan @joe what’s lichts moniker? Licht show? Or lime-Licht

  37. sethb22 Says:

    @Clafollett

Someone on NFL Network said it earlier …

Lovie wants 11 hats to the ball defense, not Revis lock up a side and everyone else try not to screw up… I love team Defense.

  38. Chris Says:

Yes the question for the night is where is our cap space at now?

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Alterraun Verner is an EXCELLENT signing.

  40. Jarrett Says:

lol at anybody thinking this guy is as good as Revis. Don’t be disrespectful. There is only one Revis, #24 & If it were up to me he’d retire a buccaneer.

Cant believe people would rather get worse and downgrade a position to save money. Theres other players that deserve to be cut before we release Revis.

  41. Mark Says:

Why is it so difficult to realize the Bucs are parting ways with Revis.
16M and bump from 4th to 3rd could go a long way.

If you want to get upset, blame the past GM and coach for doing the trade.
I’d rather take a chance with the new defense than have a great CB and poor defense like last year. Fill the gaps.

Good job so far for the GM and coach.

  42. thibs5599 Says:

Defense Heavy in Free Agency looks like we will be able to focus on the Offensive Side of the Ball in the Draft. Maybe a Sammy Watkins if we dont take a QB?

  43. Josh P Says:

Don’t let the door hit you in the a** on the way out Revis!!

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Now people should stop whining,

If only they could replace our penalty getting safety.

  45. Eric Says:

Two guys signed in the top ten available on PFT top 100 free agents. One the number one ranked at his position. And both younger players.

And we got money to get more goodies.

Not to mention a DT that started in the Super Bowl.

    Wow!

    In Lovie I trust.

  46. buccanAy Says:

I wonder what’s p with Penn? Time to get some OG’s and an LT and we are a legit team. This has been an incredible debut for our new GM!!

  47. bucrightoff Says:

He really needs to fire his agent though. How did he get less than Shields and Davis, and a lot less at that? Not complain from our end but the young man missed out on some money methinks.

  48. Macabee Says:

The ratings are not in yet, but I’ve got to tip my hat to Lovie and Licht as there has been no NFL team that has been more aggressive or successful as the Bucs have been on this first day of FA.

If this is any indication of how we will play this year, I am proud to be a Buc.

  49. Barry Says:

Looks like Licht is a playa

  50. ChanEpic Says:

    @deminion The Tampa Bay Lichtning…

  51. JFat Says:

Well the sky didn’t fall after all. Welcome to TB Verner. All the nay-sayers can shut their mouths about Licht and Lovie now, these guys obviously have a plan and it’s only day one. Verner, P-nut, J-Banks, Barron, Goldson works just fine in the secondary.

  52. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

This is huge… I know it probably means Revis is gone, but I’m with the “keep Revis” crowd 100% on this… I’m about to go nuts thinking about that secondary along with a good pass rush…

Great job on Verner Bucs! Now make it one the nastiest defenses in the land by keeping Revis, please!!!

  53. Chico Mark Says:

All this says is that Sammie Watkins will be a Buc

  54. Que589 Says:

Lovie & Licht are on fire. They’re flipping the roster right before our eyes….

  55. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Barry

    Yeaaaaah Budddy

Lovie & Licht doing they thang!!

    Make Us Proud!

  56. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

And on top of that I’d still try to get Tillman! I’m feeling greedy as hell! lol

  57. clafollett Says:

I have to think with all this attention given to the D side in free agency, the draft has to go mostly offense.

This makes sense since Tedford is just coming out of college and may have a very good idea of what all these guys are capable of.

I can’t WAIT for the draft!

Its a good day in Tampa Bay!

    GO BUCS!

  58. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @N.C. FlorIdiot

    Go eat than..lol

    I feel U

  59. BucsfaninChina Says:

Jeeeeeeeezus now imagine landing Barr or Mack rounding out OLB.

Starting lineup: Johnson, McCoy, McDonald/Spence, Clayborn, Foster, David, Barr/Mack, Peanut, Verner, Banks, Goldson, Barron.

Unbelievable first day. Licht is my boy!

  60. nate_tweetz Says:

LOL. We got some bipolar people on here. We just got Verner for 4 years, what it would cost to have Revis for a year and a half! Verner had more than twice as many INT’s than Revis did last year. And has twice as many good knees to run on. Kudos to Lovie and Licht. The only way they can screw up tonight is if they announce they’ve signed Josh McGown to a big, long-term contract.

  61. clafollett Says:

Yeah, Peanut to the bucs brings a lot of knowledge and experience. He can help bring Banks up to speed.

I doubt they have room to keep Revis so Peanut would be a great replacement for that Pro Bowl level tutoring.

  62. deminion Says:

    @ChanEpic Tampa bay Lichting lol

  63. buccanAy Says:

…and like I said earlier…for the position in this D, its about 8-10 mil a year, and that’s what we’re paying for Verner. There is a method to the madness. C’mon Joe, quit fallin in LOVE, and let’s build a winner!

  64. Pelbuc Says:

Today’s activity by the Bucs showed how bad the roster was. Revis was not the savior everyone thought although the worst part of that terrible trade was not the crazy salary but the draft picks lost. I’d much rather have all these new players than keep Revis. Now all we need is address the Oline and QB and the team is already much better before the draft. Lovie is already paying dividends with his ability to acquire all these FAs. At least there will be less holes to fill and more depth. Job well done.

  65. Mr. T Says:

Revis will have to go if the Bucs want to sign more players to address needs on offense. Like what they’ve done so far. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

  66. THETRUTH Says:

I think we are atill 10mil under cap and haven’t cut revis yet.

  67. clafollett Says:

    @nate_tweetz,

“The only way they can screw up tonight is if they announce they’ve signed Josh McGown to a big, long-term contract.”

The keyword being “big”. I don’t mind the long term contract but he needs backup money till he can prove otherwise.

He hasn’t show an that on average has has “it”. A handful of good games does not a great QB make.

  68. Touchdown Gus Says:

If I was revis id take a pay cut to play on this defense. Verner and that pass rush would be absolutely nasty

  69. Jeagan1999 Says:

Verner and Michael Johnson combined earn less than Revis’s $16 million…plus we still have money left over!

  70. Barry Says:

Licht painted NYJ into a corner. They may be calling about Revis.

  71. Doc Says:

    GOOD JOB

  72. JerseyBucsFan Says:

Plz keep both Revis. Teams will have nightmare thinking throwing against these two guys. Glazers step in and say I have no problem paying revis

  73. deminion Says:

    Licht-show

  74. clafollett Says:

    @Touchdown Gus,

“If I was revis id take a pay cut to play on this defense. Verner and that pass rush would be absolutely nasty”

I was actually pondering if all these signings are enough to get Revis to restructure. These are some very good moves overall and immediately improves the D. The offense still needs love but this D has epic potential.

  75. Oahubuc Says:

Saints sign Byrd for 4 years. Not my favorite piece of news. Not that I was hoping for him, just that I don’t want him within 600 miles of Tampa.

  76. SAMCRO Says:

Revis just bought us 3 players. He won’t get what he wants in FA, but he will be able to choose who he wants to play for. I’m hearing the Jets already. Imagine that. They Jets got a 4th round pick for a one year rental, and get him back for a cheaper price. John Idzic is brilliant

  77. Mumbles Says:

OK, I’m taking bets! I got a Hunnert that says Revis will not get 16mil a year next time around! Refused to cooperate with the Bucs. I’m betting he gets 12mil max! He was never about the Bucs, he’s always about the Bucks!

  78. schmuckaneer Says:

A healthy Doug Martin, Mike Williams and offensive line will do much to improve the 32nd ranked offense.

  79. Martinii Says:

Its a GOOD Day in Tampa Bay….Go Bucs

  80. clafollett Says:

    @Mumbles,

I’m not takin that bet. Damned right about the bucks vs Bucs.

  81. Trubucfan22 Says:

I wonder why they ordered the Revis jerseys if they knew he was gonna be cut…

  82. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    like

  83. schmuckaneer Says:

    And….Verner is a great signing!!!

  84. Oahubuc Says:

Fact is, Revis probably will get 12 million, and probably from a team like Niners with a little money to burn for a year.

  85. scott hunter Says:

get tillman vick or shaubb and we are winning the division……waiting on a wr…..we are getting a stud at 7, the bucs are on to somethin

  86. Oahubuc Says:

Kid needs a new number, STAT.

  87. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

Heck yeah LUVMYBUCS!!! I am going to go eat, then I’m going to have celebration sex with my woman! Then 5 min’s later, I’ll be right back on here reading all these JBF articles and posts! LMFAO!!!

  88. Brandon Says:

Revis doesn’t care to restructure no matter what the team looks like, Revis only cares about one thing, REVIS. Ever since that greedy bastard was drafted he’s been holding out, constantly putting his greedy demands over the needs of the team. That’s why the Jets had had enough of him despite his greatness. You can’t have a good team when you spend a disproportionate amount of the cap on one man that doesn’t do a whole lot to make the other 10 guys that much better.

Pass rushers, on the other hand, make EVERYBODY look better. Good signings with McDonald and Johnson…no, great signings.

Smart signings and done at nice rates too. Verner was signed for a just over $6 mil a season… Just think, we got a really good corner, and a really good pass rusher for less money ($2 mil) than it took to have a really good corner last year.

  89. bucyou51 Says:

im sorry but if im lovie i would bust a nut with him and revis u could run any defense u want at any point in time and the opposing qb would have no clue plus the hawk and barron at safety good god just thing about it

  90. clafollett Says:

12 million with state income tax taking a bit of a bite. Gotta love that no FL state tax thing.

    ================

Five minutes after you start or five minutes after you’re done?

  92. bucrightoff Says:

Revis will end up in New England, Denver or Philly (sadly I’ve seen Atlanta rumoured too…). Or maybe he’ll go to Seattle for a 1 year deal and they’ll go 19-0. Assuming he and Sherman don’t kill each other.

  93. Trubucfan22 Says:

Offense will be addressed in the draft. As in drafting a qb to replace glennon. That will instantly upgrade the offense enough to get us into the playoffs. I hope joe was watching the spot on path to the draft on nfln. Hey were saying that JF is a perfect fit for the bucs. It made me smile.

  94. Becks Says:

Love what were doing here. Building a solid team defensively and not overpaying to do so. However we did have the 32nd place offense last year. Defense wasn’t so much the problem. We just couldn’t move the ball. Hope we go all offense in the draft…Unless of course Clowney somehow falls to us lol.

  95. Niko Says:

Great move. Everyone… Get over area is. The guy is great but we didn’t have a Revis when we won our Super Bowl. How many super owls did the jets win with him? And we went 4-12. We are better off with 3 or 4 good players instead of one revis

  96. Trubucfan22 Says:

Browns need to make a deal for Revis. I will like if we get nothing for Revis. 🙁

  97. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Brandon
    @N.C. FlorIdiot

    LMAO.

    Told mine I’ve got 50 solid Pumps for you..She said C’mon lets get’er done..lol

  98. Patrick in VA Says:

Pretty sure I said earlier that the Revis deal isn’t happening in a vacuum and these guys knew what they were doing. Glad to see all the folks that acted like Revis is the only person in the league that can play cb now acting like he can’t leave fast enough. You guys and your shiny objects, I swear

  99. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

Five min’s after I start of course… It’s all about the BUCS today! OK, maybe six min’s after I start, but that would be a personal best!!! LOL!

  100. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Patrick in VA

    Leave’em lone nah..lol

  101. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LMAO

  102. CoverToo Says:

A positive spin on the Revis deal, we would have been lucky if we got one starter from last years 2nd and this years 4th pick. Chances are, that starter would not have been a player as good as Verner. Plus Verner’s contract is only taking 1/2 of the 16 million we’ll save by cutting Revis, freeing up money for more players.

  103. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    smh…Boy I tell yah

  104. Eric Says:

The more defensive holes we fill, the more likely we take Johnny Football!

  105. Buc1987 Says:

    Joe says :
    “This is an excellent signing”

Joe Little Puppy is not going to be happy with this optimism.

  106. Patrick in VA Says:

We went from “starting to think Lovie didn’t know what he’s doing” to “we’re winning the division” in one signing. I wish I could say I was done with the comments section but that’s not true so, instead, just know that you’re all being judged

  107. bucrightoff Says:

Well Verner is nice and all…but he’s not Revis. Better fit for Lovie’s defense? I guess but you don’t find Revis’s on trees. Lock down guys are so valuable and we paid Sheldon Richardson and a 4th for the rehab year of one. We didn’t even get to go through a who;e season where we heard his name like 5 times all season cause he just makes his side of the field disappear. It still sucks.

  108. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    87′

    Lol, knock it off

  109. Andres Says:

    wow!

  110. The Real Drew Says:

At least we haven’t really overpaid for anybody other than Johnson. It depends on how his contract is structured. I’m betting Gholdson gets traded after draft at some time. I know they sniffed Jayrius Byrd, but maybe just for Dad’s sake.

  111. Patrick in VA Says:

@bucrightoff – let’s see what it looks like before we say it sucks. What they put out there might be amazing. We don’t have a clue what it’s going to look like

  112. ManzielMadness Says:

Wow. Just read this and almost shat myself. Even though it probably won’t happen, the idea of Tillman, Verner, and Revis on the field at the same time is unbelievable.

  113. sho-nuf Says:

finally!….men running this franchise who have the CREDIBILITY to pull healthy young talent….

  114. bucrightoff Says:

    Considering Byrd got $9 million a year…yeah wow that’s a big overpay.

  115. PRBucFan Says:

    Rick Stroud ‏@NFLSTROUD
#Bucs Smith/Licht turning over roster. Wed could bring signings of McCown, Collins, Tillman, Hester, Dietrich-Smith and Melton

What a day it would be lol

  116. Buc1987 Says:

LUV…I’m still laughing at Patrick’s shiny objects comment. Funny stuff.

Then he breaks out with “just know that you’re all being judged”

LOL He’s heating up. He’s on fire. NBA Jams!

  117. Eric Says:

Yep he isn’t Revis. He’s younger, gets more picks, and hasn’t had major reconstructive knee surgery.

And doesn’t cost us 16 million per year, restricting our abilities to assemble a team.

    Not Revis at all…..

  118. Patrick Says:

Release Nicks and trade Penn to make room for Revis.

We’ll have the best secondary in football.

I know it’s probably not gonna happen but please try to find a way.

  119. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Shoot- We sign Collins-Josh-Peppers-Trade Revis tomorrow

I might have to ask the neighbor for some of that- medical sticky 2 calm us down around here.

  120. Vincente Says:

What did I tell y’all!!!! I posted earlier that we were gonna party like 1999 lol. This defense is gonna be brutal!!!! Yes!!!!

  121. Buc1987 Says:

As most can see. Some Buc fans think Revis is God.

  122. The Real Drew Says:

Jared Allen talking with Bears and Seahawks per Schefter

  123. bucrightoff Says:

I didn’t say our defense will suck, I think losing Revis and the entire cost of it sucks. Defense wasn’t even that horrible last year, just no pass rush and crap secondary behind Revis. We still need more corners cause now Revis is gone and its still the same crap behind Verner now.

  124. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @PRBucFan

Yeah-He Got Em with that one..lol

  125. Buc1987 Says:

LUV..stop it with these speculations. You’ve got my mind going like crazy. What’s left of it anyways.

  126. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Lol

  127. bucrightoff Says:

So we’re basically in win now mode if we’re going with all those signings. Just don’t really get it, free agency is to augment your roster, not build it. Draft is more important as evidence from every recent Super Bowl team. We’re better but to think we’re at the level of the best in the division, let alone Seattle and San Francisco, is a big step in a short period of time.

  128. Old*Skool*BucFan Says:

Great signing, but he AIN’T Revis. I see people saying he is BETTER than Revis, don’t fool yourself. When they get Tillman will we still have one of the better secondaries in the league, so I can respect what they are doing. Revis was too much money for us and considering the type of defense Lovie uses it was silly to pay that much for a man on man CB. Wish Revis the best where ever he goes, but I still think he is the best CB in the NFL to date.

  129. Buc1987 Says:

PRB and LUV need to just stop. You guys are getting me toooooo excited. It’s almost like they are an expansion team again. All new players.

  130. feelthepewterpower Says:

imagine if the Buccs were magically able to keep Revis WITH improved pass rush….and how awesome our secondary now is…with Verner..and possibly tillman…I just jizzed in my jock strap a little.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyBZ-Np6y4c

  131. Aubpierce Says:

Revis has never been a team player, why start now.Revis was credited with giving up five touchdowns last year which was more then his last few years combined.Maybe Lovie thinks he can get more bang for his buck, and I think he will.Lot of positions to fill and Revis’s salary will go a long way in doing so.WE get our third round pick which can be used to find either receiver or QB.

  132. Buc1987 Says:

    What a day!

  133. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Both Denver & Seattle signed a group of key free agents. Helped them get to the championship-Not saying we will the 1st year- But every little bit helps-when u find guys that fit your scheme.

The state of the bucs now compared to the other day is 100% better already now I feel we’ll be decent on both sides if we can land Sammy Watkins at no.7

  136. Buc1987 Says:

feelthepewterpower..funny stuff. I’m pretty sure Revis gone with all this spending though and I don’t think they are done yet.

  137. buccanAy Says:

@touchdownGus…This is what Revis IS…It’s all about him, with little regard for the team he’s playin for. If he would realize that by not trying to squese every nickel he can, and realize he’s made a boatload of $, he would work with Bucs to be part of a historical Bucs’ defense, but it’s ALL about Darrelle. maybe he realize the potential of this D, and reconsider, but that’s not how Revis works…unfortunately, for him and us.

  138. bucrightoff Says:

I’m glad some people still think Revis could possibly stay but that would be pretty insane at this ppint. A lot of money has been spent and more will be soon apparently.

  141. Architek Says:

What were you doubters saying again?????

  142. Patrick in VA Says:

The funny part about all this excitement is that it’s all due to defensive movements. After a whole off-season of having you guys arguing with me about how offense is the only thing that matters now we revamp the defense and you’re partying in the streets. It’s like I don’t even know you anymore

  143. bucrightoff Says:

Seattle and Denver had both been playoff teams. Their QB situations were better settled than ours is. And lets be real the NFC is absolutely insane right now. The Packers have the best QB in the NFL but are maybe the 4th best team in the NFC. Our path is very tough to the playoffs in the South too.

  144. nate_tweetz Says:

For all you Revis lovers… Compare Revis’ numbers last year to Verners:

    Tkls: Verner – 57
    Revis – 50

    Int: Verner – 5
    Revis – 2

    FF/FR: Verner – 2
    Revis – 2

Verner had 5 picks last year
Revis has had 7 picks the last 4 years (since 2010).

Verner is 3 yrs younger than Revis & has not missed a game in his career.
Revis is going into his 9th year, has missed considerable time and has NOT shown consistent signs that he is back to 100%.

Revis was NOT a shut down CB for us. (Ask Larry Fitzgerald and Deshawn Jackson). Yes, you can use Revis coming of injury as an excuse/reason, but the facts are the facts. If Revis would be willing to come down to reality, instead of being his greedy self, he would sensibly renegotiate his contract and still be on this team. So if your mad he gets cut… put it on him. He is not being reasonable. L&L look like they are going to take the approach of the Patriots and not over pay for ANYONE… no matter what your name is. Worked pretty well for them.

  145. Buc1987 Says:

  146. unbelievable Says:

    @Brandon, hahaha that was funny.

Love this signing, and I would also love to see him paired with Revis, that would be one nasty secondary. Especially in this division, we need it!

But I def think Revis will be gone. Just seems like they could have played that better, traded him after his pro bowl announcement or something. He’s valuable but no team will trade knowing he’s about to walk.

  147. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Patrick Says
“Release Nicks and trade Penn to make room for Revis.”

Releasing Nicks would save maybe a million. Bucs would have a lot of dead money. Only way to be spared from that is if Nicks retires.

  151. owlykat Says:

If they just signed Orlovsky for a million and passed on the over the hill expensive Free Agent QB, and then offered a reduced contract to Revis of say $12 million a year he might take it because he should see he will not get more elsewhere and he could get a ring here he may stay. I like The Big Mac Attack defensive line the Bucks have now. They need a MLB for Tampa 2 but maybe they have a plan for that too. I like their plan for the OL and you notice they have not cut Nix so he may surprise us and play too this year and with Collins and the G-C from the Packers and Meredith back this will be a good line. They resigned our returner from last year and with good coaching he could be a good slot receiver and he could get deep. They got the Giants’ starting TE so we are set there too. They will sign Hester I bet, and Peanut Tillman, then in the draft get a QB at 7 and a CB in the second round, and find Goode and bring him back to play MLB, and draft backups that will be great special team players and Lovie will have a contending team this year!!!

  152. Buc1987 Says:

But but but…Revis is a football God. sniffle sniffle siffle.

I’m interested to see what we’ll look like when the dust settles. The whole landscape of the draft needs discussion is going to change. Will be fun to see what comes of it

  156. Buc1987 Says:

and then if they draft Johnny Football….and then….oh just kidding!

  157. bucrightoff Says:

Using picks as a metric for Revis isn’t really fair seeing as teams prior to his injury went out of their way not to throw at him. And yes his injury matters. AP sort of ruined it for all guys coming back from that kind of injury with what he did, but coming back from an ACL is not easy.

People used PFF before to show that Johnson was a very good player, but Revis made their All-Pro team last year, ahead of Sherman even (Grimes, who we probably should have signed last offseason was the other). Here’s their summation of his season.

“Rumors of Darrelle Revis’ decline have been greatly exaggerated. Targeted only 63 times this season, he surrendered completions on only 54% of his targets (34 of 63) and gave up exactly 400 yards in coverage, no-one surrendered fewer yards per coverage snap than Revis this season (0.72) and he was only penalized once.”

We aren’t giving away a bum. Even off his injury he rates out at or near the top.

  158. nate_tweetz Says:

Do you think all of these FAs would be signing with the Bucs if Schiano and Dominick were still here? Not a chance. Just having a credible coach like Lovie is making all the difference in our FA acquisitions. We aren’t having to make every FA we sign the highest paid at their position anymore! Woo-hoo!

  159. j-dub Says:

So much for the new jerseys hindering any free agent signings! Lovie is making his mark early. I was hoping for Johnson (I wanted the Bucs to draft him)… but Verner! Moving Revis makes more sense now. If they bring in some OL help, they should be in that luxurious position to draft offensive weapons… perhaps a QB. GO BUCS!

  160. PRBucFan Says:

Your right he’s the best, but he won’t budge, and apparantly neither will the new regime.

I accept that its over, crappy as it is. It just sucks we never got to see the best shutdown corner in recent memory actually get to do that. Verner is a very good cover 2 guy, best guy we could sign. He softens the blow.

  165. SombreroBro Says:

    * you

  166. nate_tweetz Says:

@bucrightoff… Is Revis’ production worth his salary? Is his production worth $1 million a game? Is he worth $6 million more than any other CB in the league… coming off ACL rehab? Would it be nice to keep Revis? Of course it would be nice! Is it practical? Does it set a good precedent to other players on your team that you are willing to grossly overpay for one player? What will GMC and Lavonte want if the Bucs are ok with overpaying for Revis???

  167. Patrick Says:

Anybody know how much cap room we have?

  168. Tony Says:

This definitely makes the loss of Revis a little easier. I would have liked to have gotten at least something for him, but it is what it is. Would still like to see someone like Walter Thurmond come in as the nickel though.

I know a lot of naysayers think letting Revis go is only going to hurt, but you have to think that a slight dip at one position, to make the core as a whole stronger, has to make some sense to you.

And while Darrelle may be a hell of a corner, at least he makes an insane amount of money. This way he can buy himself a super bowl ring, because I doubt he’ll ever earn one with his attitude.

  169. Buc1987 Says:

Bucs Fan Since ’76…how much do you want to bet?

  170. sethb22 Says:

    NEWS FLASH!!!!

If we kept Revis our Offense would be terrible after all of the signings we made. We’d have no money left.

    Revis is GONE!

Best hope is we get a trade partner in the next 16 hours or so. Hell I’d be happy to get a 4th rounder back at this point. Baltimore traded A. Boldin at the last minute last year and got something in return. We should be able to get something….

  171. feelthepewterpower Says:

most of the revis misplays were early on in the season while recovering still, and the Buccs went to a zone scheme. How do you really gauge Revis’ stats when they’re not throwing to his side as much as a normal corner, and that’s still with a subpar passrush! no knock on mccoy, just didnt have anyone around him that could get to the passer with that scheme they used.

  172. bucrightoff Says:

Nate, money wasn’t an issue. I’d so much rather have Verner and Revis and not Johnson (although we could still afford it). Draft a pass rusher or look somewhere else for value later on. In our division we need corners, many, and after Verner its still a big weakness.

  173. feelthepewterpower Says:

if mccown wants a lot (and let’s face it, he’s not a long term solution)…why not go after Freeman again for cheap money to compete at the very least for back-up or even start again if they don’t draft a qb high….

heard he’s working out with brad johnson….so that can only help his attitude and production on the field.

  174. Eric Says:

Broncos signing Talib helps Bucs as Patriots have missed out on the top 2 Corners (A. Verner is 2nd), even more when you consider V. Davis and S.Shields.

They are definitely scared of the Raiders getting Revis with all that money.

Hopefully we get something Day 1 of the draft now…

  184. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

With the signing of Verner and possibly Tillman (tomorrow), maybe this is enough to scare a Revis hungry team (knowing he’s going to go to free agency if they don’t make a move) into making a trade for Revis?? Just hoping we can get something in return for him instead of just letting him walk. Ultimately though, I still would love to see us keep Revis.

Didn’t know much about this guy, but after watching some of his highlights, I’m impressed. Might turn out to be our best FA pickup when its all said and done. You always want a player like Revis, but if we you cant keep him, then I think the bucs handled the situation well.

To the stat idiot up top…revised doesn’t get passes thrown his way…so don’t compare his stats to verner. I see you said he got beat by Fitzgerald, and desean Jackson…really??? Sherman got beat by a no name in Minnesota and he got beat by ty Hilton…but let me guess..he is not a shutdown corner either.

  197. Buc1987 Says:

That’s franchise QB $ and last time I checked he aint throwing no tds. And sorry to burst his bubble but NO ONE is going to pay him that. So if he don’t want to take less to stay with us SEE YA!! I’m all in on every decision L&L make!! After what we have suffered thru the last 3 years I would hope everyone else would be on board to!!

It’s just amazing when you sit back for a moment and look at the Revis situation how it is. One day we are going nuts and trading for him and giving him a long term deal worth 96 mil, and not even a calendar year later we are on the verge of cutting him for cap space and saving the 3rd rounder we traded away to get him.

The Freeman situation was a player acting stupid, but this…..this is management going full retard. Gosh, what an idiot Dominik was.

I say keep Revis, then our back-end is closed, and we have enough on the front end with the Johnson & McDonnald, along with the guys we already have. 212. TJ Ware Says:

Guys and gals that are hating on Revis…yes he is overpaid. But he signed a contract with $0 guaranteed. Never saw any big name player with the guts to do that.
We just paid a dude with 3.5 sacks last year almost 9 mil/yr, 24 mil guaranteed. Really? And you guys are calling Revis overpaid.
Dumping Revis concerns me more that Lovie is unable to adjust his system to talent than losing Revis. He would rather drastically overpay for a C+ to B- DE than slightly overpay a former A+ now A cornerback because it fits his outdated system.

  215. PRBucFan Says:

    “yes he is overpaid.”

“Really? And you guys are calling Revis overpaid.”

    Which is it???

And C+ B- on whose scale? Yours Mayock Jr?

  216. Jerry Says:

Michael Johnson signing is a little concerning with the fact he only had 3.5 sacks last year. I know he had 11 the previous year, but that was really his only good year.

Verner is a good pick-up for a good price. But he’s no Revis. It’s technically still a downgrade.

  217. Fritz50 Says:

“Why is it so difficult to realize the Bucs are parting ways with Revis”

Maybe ’cause the BUCS have never stated they’re cutting Revis, if they can’t trade him. All that is based on speculation by a talking head. May be true, prolly IS true, but just speculation, at this point. They may be able to keep him, depending on their plans/actions in the remainder of the free agent frenzy period & it’s affect on the Cap. They may be able to revamp his contract unilterally, to free up room this year & move the decision to next year. I will say that if they play to cut him they’ll do it before the roster bonus is due (IMHO), so we should know soon.
