Free Agency Day, Open Thread

March 11th, 2014

<

OK, this will be something a little different from Joe. Here is a post Joe will leave near the top of the page for Bucs fans to comment on any NFL item they want. Joe will periodically post Bucs-related rumors or information here as well, whether it is updates on the Darrelle Revis situation or other potential transactions. Of course, Joe will do his usual work, too.

Joe will start it off with this nugget:

* Joe spoke with someone he has known for some 15 years that is close to Dexter McCluster, the Chiefs free agent WR/RB/return specialist. Last night, this source told Joe that McCluster had told him “last week” that the Bucs were interested in him. How close are Bucs to offering McCluster a contract? Joe cannot say. The same source also claims McCluster, if he had his way, would stay in Kansas City. Joe can understand that. The Chiefs were a playoff team in 2013. This is not to say McCluster does not want to play for the Bucs; only that his first choice is to remain with the Chiefs.

[Update 7:56] Albert Breer of the NFL Network Twittered the Bucs are after two Bengals free agents.

@AlbertBreer: With the Revis situation simmering, Bucs are expected to be in the chase for a pair of Cincy FAs: OT Anthony Collins and DE Michael Johnson.

[Update 8:38]: Per Adam Schefter on BSPN Radio, the Bucs have been shopping Revis for three weeks.

[Update: 8:44] Adam Schefter seems to believe the Bucs are not going to trade Revis; but cut him, Twittered the word “when” in reference to a release.

[Update: 9:29] One reason the Bucs have hit a wall in trying to trade Revis may be the asking price, per good guy and well-connected Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report.

@mikefreemanNFL: GM tells me Bucs’ initial asking price was two No. 1s for Revis. Around the league, they were laughed at.

[Update: 9:51]Apparently, the Bucs are also eyeing free agent tight ends, per ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas.

@PatYazESPN: Hearing Houston TE Garrett Graham could be a target for #Buccaneers.

[Update: 10:21] Ian Rapoport of NFL.com seems to believe it is just a matter of time before the Bucs announce their newest defensive end, former Bengals stud Michael Johnson.

@RapSheet: One of the first names that could be off the board: Michael Johnson, #Bengals DE. The #Bucs and Johnson have mutual interest.

[Update: 10:48] Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports believes the Bucs have come to an agreement with a new edge pass rusher.

@JasonLaCanfora: When the Michael Johnson signing with the Bucs becomes official, I hear the deal will average $8.5M/year with around $24M guaranteed

[Update: 11:13]More numbers being floated out by the four-letter on Johnson’s alleged pack with the Bucs.

@JosinaAnderson: More specifics: Sources: DE Michael Johnson has agreed to a 5-year, $43.75M deal with 24M guaranteed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

[Update: 11:38] In the category of less suitors is better for the Bucs, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon-Journal says the Browns are not in the Dexter McCluster sweepstakes.

@NateUlrichABJ: Despite the rumblings on Twitter, a league source said WR Dexter McCluster “is not going to Cleveland.”

[Update: 12:07] NFL.com claims the Browns “have significant interest” in Darrelle Revis. Sure, what team doesn’t? Pulling the trigger on a trade is another matter.

[Update: 1:20] WDAE-AM 620 is reporting Dekoda Watson will have a new team this afternoon. Joe wishes Watson well.

[Update: 1:44] Now it seems the Raiders are in the hunt for Revis, per the San Francisco Chronicle.

@VicTafur: Raiders are strong players in Darrelle Revis sweepstakes, along with Browns, according to league sources.

[Update: 3:41] Ian Rapoport just reported on the NFL Network that the Bucs are the team most interested in free agent quarterback Josh McCown. Rapoport expects McCown to take his time teasing with his available suitors.

[Update: 4:06] Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports Danny Gorrer, who will be a key cog now that Revis will be gone, has re-signed with the Bucs.

[Update: 4:09] Adam Schefter claims that Dexter McCluster has signed with the Titans.

[Update: 4:12] Bucs sign Seattle defensive tackle Clinton McDonald and Giants tight end Brandon Myers.

[Update: 5:09] The Bucs re-signed OG Jamon Meredith to a two-year contract via various reports.

[Update: 5:44] Bucs are to bring in Packers center Evan Dietrich Smith for a recruiting visit, per Adam Caplan.

[Update: 5:46] Adam Schefter claims the Redskins signed former Bucs special team ace Adam Hayward.

[Update 5:48] The Bucs released kicker Lawrence Tynes, who was at the center of the MRSA mess.

[Update: 5:55] The Bucs announced they have extended the contract for CB Deveron Carr.

[Update 6:25] Multiple reports have CB Peanut Tillman visiting the Bucs on a recruiting trip Wednesday.

[Update: 6:33] Bengals tackle Anthony Collins coming in for a visit tomorrow.

[Update: 9:36] The Bucs signed Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner .

  1. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s gonna be a fun day. It’ll be interesting to watch the conversation evolve as we make our way toward 4 and then see how close folks got.

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

@Joe – aAlso, did the late night video idea fizzle out? Haven’t seen it lately

  3. Nic Says:

Why do I get the feeling that at the end of the day, Bucs fans are going to feel like a gang of thugs kidnapped them, forced them into a terrible Nike jersey with “blade carving” numbers, and beat them mercilessly? I don’t have a good feeling about today at all, but I really, really hope I’m wrong…

  4. Jeremy Says:

I predict that the bucs will focus on lesser known free agents to serve as role players. I anticipate 1-2 past their prime signings to add leadership to the locker room. Revis will not be cut

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

If Revis isn’t cut/traded then I gotta think this year will be his farewell tour in Tampa. This thing shouldn’t have gone this public

  6. flmike Says:

    My bold prediction….
Jan 2016 Lovie and Licht are shown the door….
He couldn’t build a roster in Chicago, he won’t be able to do it here….
Best indicator of future behavior is past behavior and he has proven as a HC for 9 years he had no clue how to build a roster, he chased names and got continually got burned (Adams, Price, Peppers, Cutler, Hurd, moved Hester to WR, etc). I didn’t agree with the hire when the made it, now with news of the possible release of someone we paid a heavy price for I really don’t like it. Lovie has a lot to prove, he’d better make the Bucs better and fast or his tenure will be short lived..

  7. snook Says:

    Let the freaking out begin!!!!!!

  8. lightningbuc Says:

I don’t think the Revis stuff is legit. His jersey is still for sale on the Bucs website. NO WAY Lovie would make his uniform available to the public if he weren’t going to stick around. I mean, that is how we are to look at personnel issues right now – who’s jersey is for sale, right?

  9. StPeteBucsFan Says:

” Lovie has a lot to prove”

Really? How many coaches have made it to the Super Bowl. He did it with Rex Grossman at Q.B. He was fired after a 10 win season.

Lovie and Tony Dungy are two peas out of the same pod. They are defensive oriented coaches who tolerate boring offense as long as the offense doesn’t turn the ball over and make big mistakes.

That raises the question if you’ll be patient with that style of play? I get that many would prefer to win 49-43 instead of 6-3 but the wild card for me here is the quality and class of the team off the gridiron.

Dungy/Smith teams are quality citizens for the most part. Outlaws are shown the door.

I’m tired of being embarrassed by athletes representing my city. I’m going to give Lovie Smith EVERY benefit of the doubt.

He had a winning record 8 of is 12 years and if you toss out his first 5-11 effort with the bad team he inherited it’s even better. Toss out that season which he turned around to 11-5 the very next year and he wins close to 60% of his games

Now can somebody tell me what Lovie Smith has left to prove other than actually WINNING the Super Bowl. And isn’t that all that’s left. Isn’t that why he’s here.

  10. Jerry Says:

Too much smoke for there not to be any fire. Revis is done. They will cut him by tomorrow afternoon and we will get nothing in return.

Looks like he may even go right back to the Jets.

  11. Chef Paul Says:

Great idea Joes!!! I hope this really works out well for your site. I’m sure we will all enjoy this thread throughout the day.

  12. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Lightning still crushing it.

  13. INDYbucsfan Says:

I’m so pissed we wasted a 1rd pick last year!

  14. Alex Says:

Would you say the Bucs are chasing McCluster or Hester harder? Who would command the bigger salary??

  15. Barry Says:

Licht n Smith are putting their stamp on this team. Half the roster will be replaced, you all realize that. No? So why whine about every move? I’m a big Revis mark, but you can’t pay him 16 million. I hope at the end of the day he’s a Buc. But,,, it’s not personal, it’s just business.

  16. Joe Says:

    Alex:

Who would command the bigger salary??

McCluster because he is multi-dimensional. Hester is a one-trick pony at a position that is being devalued.

  17. lightningbuc Says:

    C’mon ODB, join me!

    Gonna be fun!

  18. Joe Says:

@Joe – aAlso, did the late night video idea fizzle out? Haven’t seen it lately

No. Was busy with Revis stuff. It’s a weeknight feature, only.

  19. BoJim Says:

    Can’t wait till 4:00.

  20. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Cannot look to the past Indybucfan, You have to think that no matter what that the bucs are upgrading a 4th round pick to a high 3rd round. What a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!! The roster is about to get reworked. I think we all can agree there was much more than coaching issues on this team. I did wish that we were collecting 4th, 5th, and low round draft picks for the talent that we are casting off. But there heavy contracts make it a near impossibility.

    Go Bucs!!!

  21. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @JOE

  22. The_Buc_Realist Says:

How long does it take for Joe to do the “Mexican Hat Dance” on a Glennon Jersey.

it takes like 10 minutes tops.

  23. flmike Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan
The question is, if he was such a great coach, then why did Chicago fire him after a 10 win season? Because he proved over an extended period of time, he couldn’t do it….3 post seasons in 10 years.

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/8799497/lovie-smith-was-fired-chicago-bears-poor-offenses-lack-playoff-berths-gm-says

  24. INDYbucsfan Says:

@realist. I know man I know, it just sucks. And I realize this is the right move for us to make and we can make our team better with more picks and F/A signings. I guess the worst part about it for me is that I still believe we could be in contention for the playoffs this year. Obviously coach doesn’t. I’m so sick of not making the playoffs

  25. Patrick in VA Says:

@Joe – Right on. I suppose the next few days will be pretty slammed.

  26. biff barker Says:

Curious to see what kind of money McCluster will command. I’d love to see him here.

  27. Snook Says:

Just another example of the idiot mob mentality in this country.

Nothing has even happened yet and people are freaking out.

  28. Jeagan1999 Says:

Buckle up, Bucs fans…gonna be a bumpy ride!

  29. brandonbucfan Says:

Agree with Nic…I am afraid that we are being led that the roster will be vastly improved. Remember other teams want these Fa’s too…and we are a 4-12 team.
After the frenzy we still only have 5 draft picks and probably back to one of the worst secondary’s. I’m WORRIED..remember our GM has never been in charge of the free agent period before….Hope I’m wrong!

  30. BucsfaninChina Says:

Lots of smoke, no fire yet.

I for one am very nervous about the Revis departure since we would be handing the keys of a Porsche 911 over to our first year GM (the Porsche being $40 mil under the cap and the decalaration that all cash will be spent). Even if a trade were to happen, is Licht the guy you want picking in the draft? Time will tell, but I am not ready to go all-in with bumping off one of our best players so the new GM has extra pocket change.

  31. Macabee Says:

There are 4 teams actively trying to trade for Darelle Revis – Patriots, Broncos, 49ers, and the Eagles. There appears to be a sense this morning that something will be done before Wednesday 4:00pm. The issue as I understand it is not trade value but salary cap issues for two of the most interested teams in 2014. Some creative restructuring may make it possible to get a deal done!

Warning: This info is from the Twitterverse, the most unreliable source of info this time of year in the NFL. Do your own research!

  32. SAMCRO Says:

I guess Lovie and the Gang must have seen it how I saw it. Revis should not have eaten pineapple. At his ridiculous price they weren’t “shock and awed” from last years tape. He is way overvalued and a huge hit on our cap space to play like an average NFL cornerback. He’s getting paid for what he did several years ago. Last year was his “what have you done for me lately” audition, and he played less than stellar. He’s claimed he’s healthy “now” but he stands to make another $16,000,000

    Let’s see $16 million divided by 3 = $5.33 million.

That could be 3 quality cornerbacks for the price of one.

We need bodies. Unfortunately I don’t think they will find a trade partner and will end up releasing him. How depressing.

  33. Snook Says:

    @Macabee:

Revis’ contract allows for unilateral restructuring.

Cap space won’t be an issue.

  34. flmike Says:

The only way Smith and Licht don’t wind up looking like bumbling schmucks is if they are able to recoup the picks that Dominik paid for him, the $16 million Revis was paid last season is the cost of doing business, it’s the picks that are the currency of the league.

  35. Kingpin Says:

We have the best corner in the league and I say if we can’t trade him better keep him. Eagles and Pats are really hoping we release him. Just hope no one in the NFC south wants him.

  36. bucrightoff Says:

My only prediction is we’re going to make signings we’ll regret in a few years. That’s the norm now.

  37. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I can’t believe McCluster is only 25. That’s a solid value FA right there.

  38. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“McCluster had told him “last week” that the Bucs …”

That would have been tampering, Joe.

  39. Macabee Says:

    Snook,

You’re right about that! What I’ve read is because of cap space issues for two of the teams it would have to be done, not that it can’t be done or that they do not have the unilateral right to do so. The Bucs would obviously want to leave that option for the trading team.

  40. bucrightoff Says:

McCluster serves no purpose. We can find a guy in the 5th round we can run only routes out of the slot. He’ll never play RB with the 3 guys we have. Do not waste money on him.

  41. Architek Says:

Why are you guys so negative?

  42. BucsfaninChina Says:

Today is gonna be fun as hell.

  43. flmike Says:

    Architek Says:

Why are you guys so negative?

Because this is the same kind of crap that went on in Chicago when Lovie was given more say over the personnel. He has no clue how to build a roster, Jerry Angelo was a lot of things, stupid wasn’t one of them.

  44. Eric Says:

He isn’t the best corner in the league anymore. If that were so someone would trade for him.

Lovie got a look at his tape as well as the rest of the team and concluded too many holes to fill, and two few draft picks and cap $ to rebuild.

A harsh reality to the “we’re so talented like the chiefs were” crowd. As well as the delusional Dom apologists.

  45. bucrightoff Says:

When you’re about to give away a top 3 player at his position, having wasted a first and fourth round pick, there’s pretty much nothing to be positive about. Other than I’m positive this is another losing, non-playoff season ahead. Based off our recent run, that means Lovie has 2 years to get us in or see you later.

He isn’t the best corner in the league anymore. If that were so someone would trade for him.
    _______________________________________________________________

Zero leverage = no trade. He could be the greatest corner of all-time. Doesn’t matter. Teams aren’t as stupid as we are, they’ll wait and get him for free in another day.

    @Macabee:

“Revis’ contract allows for unilateral restructuring.”

Not entirely true. Revis has to be willing to restructure. While they could restructure to shift the numbers around while still paying him the same, they would lose the ability to cut him without dead money.

The only way to make restructuring worthwhile is to do a completely new contract that pays less overall. If he is not willing to take less, the Bucs would benefit in negotiations by leaking the rumor that they will cut him.

Since he won’t get what he wants as a free agent, that might get him to take less.

The down side would be that he becomes Revis the whiner again, wanting more money every year.

Personally I never wanted to keep him beyond next year, so I would rather keep his contractas is and draft a young stud CB to learn for a year.

  48. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Ever wonder how the Dominick/Idzik negotiations went? I always pictured Idzik having his buddies call while he’s on the line with Dominick.

Idzick: :beep: Mark, hold on I have another call coming in

Idzick: Mark, sorry to keep you waiting, that was the Raiders :holds hand over phone trying to stifle laugh: They want to offer 1st and a 2nd. But, man, I hate those guys, call me back with your best offer. :hangs up, falls on floor laughing:

Always rememeber, Dominick actually offered MORE money than the Skins for Haynesworth. There was no Revis market. He overpaid. He REALLY overpaid.

  49. Fritz50 Says:

Really can’t see them dumping Revis before they have some sort of replacement in place. they have the cap room to hire replacements and then dump Revis to recover the Cap space.

  50. Destinjohnny Says:

Sucks that we even have to sign any free agentS- I nope the new crew can draft well that is the key to long term success – love would have gone 4-12 with last years team

  51. Eric Says:

If teams were dying to get Revis they would trade for him vs. risking not getting him in a bidding war.

If such a war would ensue for an aging and injured corner.

  52. bucrightoff Says:

If Revis has to restructure to get dealt, why would he? He gets to choose where he goes if he gets cut. He doesn’t if we trade him. He’s getting cut, no trade is possibly happening, maybe a conditional 6th rounder but I’d rather cut him than suffer the embarassement of accepting a 6th rounder for a guy we paid a 1st and a 4th for.

  53. TJ Ware Says:

I hear you idiots saying we can 3 guys for revis price?…is it, “hey honey” we can have 3 ford taurus cars for the price of one bmw….you guys are idiots..revis is proven..there is no guarantee those other guys will be proven..ALSO, if im a free agent, and i know you dont have a corner…but you HAVE ALOT of cap room. My asking price just went up. So that guy you couldve got at 5 mil is now 7.5-8mil…..yea sure we can try to build this team like the patriots…but there is ONE problem…..i will let you figure that out

  54. Snook Says:

“GM tells me Bucs’ initial asking price was two No. 1s for Revis. Around the league, they were laughed at.”

    Can’t blame them for asking.

    _______________________________________________________________

Why give up anything of substance? Again, he’s not restructuring. $16 million a year, nobody is trading for that. If you can’t graps basic negotiating concepts, perhaps you shouldn’t comment on them?

    Can’t blame them for asking.
    _______________________________________________________________

Yes you can. It’s an assanine asking price. More than we paid for him, at a higher contract? I mean if true I really have no faith in Licht at all.

  57. Snook Says:

Jesus… people are so uptight today. Wow.

If the Bucs were really going to release Revis, no one would be calling them.

    But apparently they are.

I’m predicting we get a 1st rounder for him and move on.

He never wanted to be here anyways.

  58. Macabee Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai,

The contract gives the Bucs the unilateral right to restructure Revis contract. They do not have the right to reduce the amount Revis is paid. For instance, they can unilaterally elect to (without Revis consent) pay a 6 million dollar salary, pay him a 10 million dollar roster bonus and spread the 10mil over the remaining 5 years of the contract (dead money). Revis gets 16mil this year and the cap hit is reduced to 8mil (6mil salary + 2mil dead money).

  59. SAMCRO Says:

    @TJ Ware

I’ve got property in So. Fla …you interested?

  60. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I don’t think the Bucs can get a low 3rd round with the 16 million that comes with the trade. Revis is reported to denied a paycut purposed by the bucs, I just don’t see a trade of any kind happening.

  61. Eric Says:

What isn’t being grasped is that Revis isnt Revis anymore, and is very unlikely to ever be. Even he said his injury forced him to play more zone.

Schiano played him in zone to protect him.

Who is the say that wont be the case this year? Old knees do not generally regenerate. Especially at corner which may be the hardest position in football.

Really don’t buy that at all, Eric. Time will tell.–Joe

  62. lightningbuc Says:

It’s a shame Dominik isn’t here to trade Revis, because then he could have “fleeced” a team for Revis two years in a row.

  63. Fritz50 Says:

    “Can’t blame them for asking.”

Could be as simple as the Bucs letting everyone know what it’s going to take, i.e. pricing him out of the market. Unlikely, but not out of the question.

  64. bucrightoff Says:

I can’t believe people still aren’t grasping this. Here are Darelle’s options:

    1. No pay cut. Nobody is trading for him at his current cost, he’s cut and chooses his destination
    2. Agrees to pay cut. We trade him to the highest bidder, he could end up in Oakland.

So he’s taking a pay cut either way, whether traded or cut. In one scenario he controls his fate. The other he doesn’t. Simple enough right? He’s gone for nothing folks, it totally blows and make our franchise look terrible, but that’s life. Get used to being mocked as much or more than the Jags.

  65. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    @Realist

If only there was some sort of history of Revis being rigid with his contract demands, so, the front office could see something like that coming.

  66. Fritz50 Says:

“He never wanted to be here anyways”

So. now we’re living in a slave state? Revis had no choice in coming here?
Get real, he CHOSE to accpt that contract, prolly cause of the rediculous money involved, but he had a choice, and decided to come here. All this is just getting totally surreal.

  67. Bill T Says:

Of course we are not privy to the Bucs-Revis negotiations, but if I were the Bucs, I would be offering him 4 yrs-$50m. This is just above Sam Shields 4-$39m. Sherman would be asking for at least $50m over 4 yrs.

I think getting nothing for him would be pretty rough. Yes, it frees up $16m but money isn’t the Bucs problem this offseason. They have enough money to bring in a DE at $8m, OG at $7m. Only other holes I see are Nickel CB, Slot receiver and another TE. This can be addressed in the draft as well.

  68. bucfan593 Says:

If revis is released without compinsation then we are fools!

There is nobody in free agency that i think can make the impact he does! Who cares about DE’s if the DB’s are getting roasted play after play!

Does anybody remember 2012? and im sorry but i dont want to look like the Vikings or the Bears of past years..

If were not going to the show then ide rather pick high in the draft picking 20th does nothing for me!

  69. Jordan Says:

The Jags have 60 million in cap space, the Raiders 59 million. The CBA requires team to spend 89% of the salary cap on a rolling 5 year average. This means that there are teams that HAVE to spend a certain amount of money. Many of these teams are undesirable free-agent destinations. So being able to trade a draft pick for an expensive player like Revis helps them reach the CBA requirement, while also giving their team a “big name player”.

  70. Eric Says:

    @bucrightoff

Revis can agree to a restructuring and know who the trade partner is. He wouldn’t agree to it and let the Bucs trade him to wherever.

But, the Bucs can make a trade, subject to Revis agreeing to a new contract with that team.

    It’s common.

  71. bucrightoff Says:

And he’s gonna help the Bucs out why? The kindness of his (multiple holdout) heart? I’m glad some people are delusional enough to keep hope when there isn’t any, but it’s still delusion. Again trading a 6th or 7th rounder is in many ways more embarassing than cutting him. And those are the offers right now, and if you think they’re better he would have been dealt already.

  72. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Macabee Says
    “BuccaneerBonzai,

The contract gives the Bucs the unilateral right to restructure Revis contract. They do not have the right to reduce the amount Revis is paid. For instance, they can unilaterally elect to (without Revis consent) pay a 6 million dollar salary, pay him a 10 million dollar roster bonus and spread the 10mil over the remaining 5 years of the contract (dead money). Revis gets 16mil this year and the cap hit is reduced to 8mil (6mil salary + 2mil dead money).”

    Yeah, I know.

It would ruin the ability to cut him each year as a result, without having dead money.

  73. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    bucrightoff Says
“I can’t believe people still aren’t grasping this. Here are Darelle’s options:

    1. No pay cut. Nobody is trading for him at his current cost, he’s cut and chooses his destination.”

    WRONG!

If he is cut, no team will pay him the $16 million, so he would be forced to take a pay cut.

  74. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Oil Derrick Brooks Says
“If only there was some sort of history of Revis being rigid with his contract demands, so, the front office could see something like that coming.”

That right there is actually pretty funny 😉

  75. Buc Neckid Says:

Another reason for the BUCS wanting to move soon on Revis – cut or traded – is so they can take advantage of the conditional clause in the Jets trade.
If he is on the BUCS after this week, the trade costs the Bucs their 3rd rounder this year, if they cut or trade him now, the Bucs only lose their 4th round pick (in addition to the pick last year).
That loss of last years first round pick is water under the bridge right now.
That regime is gone, this one has to rebuild with the “assets” that they have and that includes trading that asset.
They need a lot, Revis may be the BEST CORNER in the league,
but the Bucs need more than just that one player and Revis’ $16 million can go a long way in free agency or re-signing current players (GMC and David)
Losing him sucks, but so does the Bucs roster with its many holes

  76. SAMCRO Says:

I agree with what some of you have said. If Revis would agree to reduce his contract to the same level as the other top paid corners (Sherman, Shields,etc..), I would be in favor to keep him. That 4-5 million saved could buy us another corner.

  77. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Keep in mind, there is not enough time left now to do a trade. Especially since his bonus is accelerated to 4 PM today, and not tomorrow as people keep stating.

  78. bucrightoff Says:

And by the way, if Revis is willing to restructure at all, why don’t we just keep him? The CB market is set, any top guy is going to be $10 million at least. If Revis is actually willing to restructure, we’d be even more moronic to deal him.

  79. bucrightoff Says:

“I can’t believe people still aren’t grasping this. Here are Darelle’s options:

    1. No pay cut. Nobody is trading for him at his current cost, he’s cut and chooses his destination.”

    WRONG!

If he is cut, no team will pay him the $16 million, so he would be forced to take a pay cut.
    _______________________________________________________________

Why did you not quote the whole thing, seeing as my point is made further on? He’s taking a paycut either way. But by being cut he 100% controls his fate. You don’t think that matters to a player? Oakland by force or New England by choice?

  80. bucfan593 Says:

Save the money for next year when quality players like Hardy and Grahm come out

  81. Solinor Says:

Revis won’t be released if they can’t get what he’s worth. This is an old tactic used all the time. Your uncomfortable paying 16mil, I get it. You start “shopping” him asking for 2 first rounders. Don’t take any less because we already gave a first and fourth rounder for him. We got him in his rehab year and he still is the best corner in the NFL. Ok so what’s the point of shopping him? To put him in a spot to where he would perhaps listen more to renegotiate his contract. Revis likes it down here, he wants to stay. They are really hoping Revis negotiates his contract, that’s the whole point of this. If he doesn’t, oh well. Your stuck with the best corner in the league for 16mil and still plenty of cap space. If he does, good job, the tactic worked. And if they trade him for 2 first rounders then good job, we win again. It’s just smoke and mirrors, everyone who is saying Revis will be released by 4pm tomorrow is just wrong. Our secondary is absolutely nothing without Revis and you can’t take that gamble that you’ll get something In FA or the draft.

    This says its March 13th.

“As of March 13, the Bucs would need much more to justify the move. On that date, the third day of the new league year, Revis earns a $1.5 million roster bonus — and the final draft pick the Buccaneers owe the Jets upgrades from fourth-round pick to a third-round selection.”

  89. bucrightoff Says:

Who cares when it is? Smart GMs, aka the one’s seemingly never on the Bucs, don’t give up assets, even miniscule ones like 5th and6th round picks, when they can get something for free. The second it was out Revis was gone either way was the end of any chance to get anything in a trade.

  90. $acbuc$ Says:

this is comedy…I think Revis is way better then Grimes and he got a long term contract’ All this dude ever asked for was a long term commitment just like Bennett.. fudging cheapskates. The Jets wouldn’t sign him now we won’t.
I guess the league just don’t appreciate LOCKDOWN CORNERS…oops the bucs just do.. with our weak a$$ history of DBs.

Just sign him to a retire as a Bucs Contract like.. 6yr 65mil 40mil garanteed. That’s 11mil per year. Now REVIS is worth that.

  91. NJBucsFan Says:

“Graham lacks playmaking ability and is a poor blocker, but the Bucs are needy at tight end. They don’t believe Greg Schiano holdover Tim Wright is the answer.”

    That’s promising (rolls eyes)

  93. bucfan593 Says:

He is worth keeping for the time being, dont give him away for just the money we can free up money with other players that dont have near the impact revis has.

adress what we can now and worry about the rest later!

  94. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

  95. NJBucsFan Says:

  97. Brandon Says:

For the money we pay Revis we could get Michael Johnnson, Dexter McCluster AND Peanut Tillman. The only upsetting and stupid thing about this move is that it was a terrible deal to begin with.. TERRIBLE! You give up a 1st and 3rd for the right to overpay for a guy coming off ACL surgery. Let’s say that Revis’ free agent market value was $16 mil per (which it isn’t/wasn’t)… well you don’t give up 1st and 3rd round picks to pay that money…that’s double trouble. First you give up premium picks, then you give up a healthy chunk of cap space.

Great defenses are built on the backs of their pass rush, not their secondary.

It might not be your money but it is OUR team. And as a shareholder (i.e. ticket buyer, merchandise purchaser) I want my team to be the best that it can be…and that means not being stupid and paying a CB elite QB money. I don’t care who he is… a great CB is nothing without a pass rush.

I’m already cringing at the thought of telling some dope Jets fan that I root for the Bucs. 112. Bill T Says:

Not saying this as fact, but if Revis is looking for another 1 year deal @ $16m elsewhere and turning down a longer term offer from the Bucs, then screw him.

He has to see the Bucs being agressive here in FA, so I hope the Bucs are offering him a long term (4-5 yrs) deal at $10-12m per. If he turns that down, karma is a bitch

  113. Jeff Says:

Like I said in another thread…the guy has a ton of value…if we can’t get a contract restructure, good chance at least one team with room that might give up something of real value…likely not what we paid, but better than a kick in the Pewter. With a restructure, he could likely play almost wherever he wanted to.

  120. MadMax Says:

Browns have two 1st’s. Could we be getting one of those or 2nd and 3rd combined? That would be a sweet deal!

  121. Daffy Buc Says:

Revis can be traded if the love light will take back unhappy players. Players the Raiders or Dolphins don’t want. We could take Johnathan Martin and Dion Jordan for Revis. All teams are happy.

  122. bucrightoff Says:

The Browns getting Revis would be awesome. They’d become relevant and we’d replace them as the NFLs go to punchline.

  123. bucrightoff Says:

And by the way nobody is still trading for Revis. This is what is known as a smokescreen. In fact the Michael Johnson being signed story is also a smokescreen to a degree. His agent leaked it to see if someone comes over the top with a better offer.

  124. $acbuc$ Says:

  128. bucrightoff Says:

My source is how long have any of you been following the NFL? The pre-free agency and pre-draft periods should just be named “BS Period”. Everyone is lying right now and not tipping their hands. Its called negotiating tactics, agents want to maximize for their players (and their fee of course), teams want maximum value in what they pay or get for assets. Every one lies and deceives right now. Welcome to th NFL

  129. Brandon Says:

Johnson automatically becomes the best DE this team has had since Simeon Rice…and physically, he is like a bigger, stronger version of Simeon Rice. Some of you guys are upset now, but just wait till this guy takes the field and starts making life very tough on Newton, Brees, and Ryan. With him turning the corner and forcing QBs to step up and McCoy collapsing the pocket, this defense will run smoothly.

  130. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Soooo….. now we have to fill the holes at CB… we need at least 3 good ones to cover the 3 WR sets.

    Banks is all we got.

  131. mark2001 Says:

But to write it all off like you know something when you really are only speculating is disingenuous…..I admit mine is hopeful speculation….what about yours?

    ========

First off, YOU’RE kidding about the intelligence part, right? I mean most of your posts have demonstrated you completely lack the ability to decipher the fact that the only dummies that thought spending a 1st and 3rd and then spending $16 mil a year on him are now no longer employed in the NFL. I’ve been rooting for the Bucs faithfully since 1983 and haven’t missed a game since you started watching them (1996). And I’ve done all of that up here in DC. I go to 2 games every year, one in Carolina and usually one in Tampa, unless we play closer to DC. This year I’m going to Florida for the entire month of July to catch some of training camp.

The weak moves were made by Schiano and Dominik. We got fleeced. We spent a 1st and 3rd round pick and then paid a ridiculous ransom to a guy coming off an ACL tear.

I don’t care how many jerseys you own. I can’t think of 15 Bucs jerseys I’d like to own… and I would never buy the crap replicas either, for my taste I have two Wilders, a Doug Williams, two Lynches-one is a replica, Sapp, Brooks, Alstott, a game worn Gruber, two Barbers (both are replica pieces of crap), a Ricky Bell, and a replica Frank Murphy that I cut the sleeves off of and wear to the gym (bought it on Ebay for $2.00)…oh and a Josh Freeman. What is that? Fourteen? Does that mean if I buy two more jerseys I will be a bigger fan than you? What matters is wins. And overpaying a CB money that you normally give an elite QB when you have no pass rush equates to 4 wins. If you’re happy with 4 wins then might I suggest you start rooting for the Browns because Smith and Licht are righting this ship.

The man was a true class act, an incredible player, and proabably one of the greatest bucs all time next to Brooks. Shame on you indeed. Absolute blasphemy .

I’ve heard the team is pushing for two 1sts…which is crazy because only Schiano and Dominik would do that (they’d probably jump at it) and perhaps a one player away team (Denver, Pats) would surrender their late 1st rounder for Revis and his ridiculous contract…I’m hopeful, but not expecting it. One of those teams would have to be mighty desperate to make such a move (like Schiano and Domink were)…but who knows… dummy Schiano supposedly has Belichick’s ear in New England.

Jesus….if the Bucs were getting anything close to 1st round offers, he’d be dealt by now. The Browns and everyone else are likely offering conditional 4th round picks. That’s it. Lovie Smith has never drafted a WR in the first round. It’s been said he never will. He HAS drafted 3 in the second round, where he prefers because he believes that is where the value is for WR.

  148. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If the Browns give up anything of substance it’s because they are the Browns. I’ve seen The Browns and Raiders both mentioned as destinations. This is why Revis isn’t renegotating, odds are he doesn’t want any part of either team at less than $16 million per.

But if the Bucs could trade Revis for a 3rd rounder it would have happened already. They have less leverage now than they’ve ever had. If there was even a mediocre deal out there they would have taken it already.

  150. Brandon Says:

Let’s all think back to 2000, rookie nickelback Brian Kelly playing against the greatest show on turf fails to get his head completely turned around and his hands on a perfectly placed pass from the reigning MVP of the league, Kurt Warner. In turn, the shameful Bucs D, led by their terrible CB trio of Abraham, Barber, and Kelly, only held the highest ever scoring team in league history to 11 points on the road. it was all that crappy CB trios fault. I seem to recall Ted “FREAKING” Ginn scorching Revis this year on a ball thrown by the immortal Ryan Tannehill. OUCH!

  151. mark2001 Says:

If we could get any first or high second rounder, I would be ecstatic. It basically depends on who else might be competing for his services. With a first and two high seconds, we could do very well for ourselves….could even trade one second down for a lower second and another third or forth.

Like I said, who knows…we overpaid for him last year, but also remember…no one knew if he would return to form…he basically was playing at a extremely high level by the end of the year….so maybe he is worth that low first and the big contract….we will see.

That’s the way free agency works for pretty much everybody. They call the first 2 days of free agency, the first wave of free agency. You usually get far better value during the second and third wave (post June 1st) of free agency.

If we are going to trade Revis why not trade him to Dallas for Ware. Then we would have our edge rusher. He is a lot better than Johnson. We might even save cash if that’s what the Bucs are worried about.

  159. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

The 3rd rounder changes to a 4th whether he is released or traded, correct? Just not on the roster…

  160. NJBucsFan Says:

    Just not on the roster.

I would like to see if we can swing a Revis for Mack deal.

  161. WalkdaPlank Says:

BSPN reported that per league sources, if the Bucs can’t trade Revis by around 4:00 Wednesday they will cut him. They are desperate to dump his salary and if he is on the roster past that 4:00 on Wednesday that 4th rounder to the Jets turns into a 3rd rounder.

  162. BucsRokk26 Says:

Revis to CLE for a swap of our 7 for their 4th and 26th first round picks. That would make sense for both teams… CLE has the cap room and Revis would be in the Rex Ryan D and with a coach he is familiar with. We get 2 ones and our 3rd round pick back plus free up 16mil in cap space. I wouldn’t be mad at that deal. BUT CUTTING him SHOULD NOT BE AN OPTION!!!

  163. WalkdaPlank Says:

Revis and #7 for Cleveland’s 2 first picks sounds good. They get someone to pair with Joe Haden and only 3 draft spots back, and the Bucs move 3 spots up with another late first rounder.

  164. Fritz50 Says:

“Revis to CLE for a swap of our 7 for their 4th and 26th first round picks.”

I don’t see any reasoning, from you, as to why , on earth, anyone in Cleveland would go for this. Great for Bucs & Revis, but…..

  165. BucsRokk26 Says:

“I don’t see any reasoning, from you, as to why , on earth, anyone in Cleveland would go for this. Great for Bucs & Revis, but…..”

You don’t see value in CLE pairing Revis with Hayden and his former system/D coordinator? They still have a top 10 pick, elite cover CB, and plenty of cap room to spare… Why doesn’t that make sense?

Sure CLE should try to offer less, but my opinion is unless the Bucs get a top 15 pick in addition to their 7th, they should keep Revis…

  166. The_Buc_Realist Says:

If we got there 2nd rounder that would be incredible.

  167. Fritz50 Says:

Just have a hard time believing anyone would do that, with all the smoke about the Bucs being desparate to dump Revis & thus willing to release him, for nothing, given a bit more time. They have the cap room to out bid everyone else & keep both their 1st round picks, why do otherwise?

  168. BucsRokk26 Says:

“They have the cap room to out bid everyone else & keep both their 1st round picks, why do otherwise?”

Because elite players don’t go to CLE, lol. Revis would have a choice where he plays and could drive up the price with a bidding war. CLE would likely not get him or end up paying him more than the 16mil he gets now… You think if he had the choice last year he would have picked the Bucs, even at 16mil?

Obviously I want to see the Bucs get the most for the least. But Revis is elite and a top 3 defensive player in the NFL, we should command at least a top 15 pick or keep him another year….

  169. Andrew 1 Says:

Well it looks like the Bucs got Michael Johnson, its even on wikipedia. So much for it being a smoke screen.

  170. Fritz50 Says:

Don’t get me wrong, I would have no problem with him staying here. And agree that , if we do let him go , we should get value for him. Seeing as how this seems to be pure speculation, based on smoke blowing from a talking head’s …anyway, even if the Bucs WERE shopping Revis, it may well have just been a way to judge the market, as opposed to a serious attempt to trade him. Keep the demands outrageous & if someone caves, so much the better. The next few days will tell, for sure.

  171. bucrightoff Says:

When I see people throwing out insane level trades, it tells me fantasy football and Madden has totally screwed up people’s thoughts in terms of how trades actually work. I mean us trading #7 and Revis for #4 and #26 would go down as one of the worst trades of all time for Cleveland. I mean that shows you how bad of shape we are in, we’re hoping another team is even more incompetent than the Bucs to avoid trading a first and 4th and ending up with nothing.

  172. The_Buc_Realist Says:

raiders are in the mix now as well, come on second and third round picks here we go!!!

Fix this Mess Lovie, and Be a Legend!!!

Its a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!!!!
    Go Bucs!!!!

  173. bucrightoff Says:

PFT says Revis will not renegotiate in any way to facilitate a trade. He’s gettintg cut folks, sucks but there it is.

  174. Fritz50 Says:

I think outrageous deals, for one player, are a sign that someone, in the organization, has too much power & ego to listen to anyone else. Too comitted to a particular player & willing to do almost anything to make it happen.

  175. Seth B Says:

Well if we signed Michael Johnson for 8.5 million/yr

we have 10.5 million left…. Try to fix all of our other needs and sign our draft picks for that… Revis keeps us Mediocre…

I like him, but he’s got to go. No other way around it.

  176. RustyRhinos Says:

@ Snook “Just another example of the idiot mob mentality in this country.

Nothing has even happened yet and people are freaking out.”

    Is this not called preparedness…

  177. Alex Houpt Says:

revis isnt taking a pay cut for a trade anyway…

  178. bucfan593 Says:

Whats the problem for the Browns trading two first round picks? The 26th pick is like trading Richardson for Revis.. Steal!!

And swaping the 7th and 4th is the incentive.
Yea they can pass on a sure thing like Revis and draft their first two picks and with the Browns history in drafts likley both will be busts.

Then they can look back and say man i wish i had provin number 1 cornerback named Revis..

There is no guarentee in even a First round pick and the Browns know that better than anybody!

  179. Fritz50 Says:

“There is no guarentee in even a First round pick”

However, there’s no guarantee that Revis up back to his old self either. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t situstions, at least for the Bucs.

  180. bucfan593 Says:

Well rumor has it that there is offers on the table. So we can at least all agree that unless we just feel bad for the man we should get some kind of compensation for him. It might be vomit worthy but i would be sick for days if he is just cut!!

  181. bucrightoff Says:

I’d rather he be cut than take a 7th. Sometimes nothing is better than something. That 7th rounder, whoever it is, will be always and forever judged against Revis, fair or not. That leaves little chance that player is a success. The Bucs pass defense is back to DFL next year.

  182. mark2001 Says:

Right off…who thought he would restructure, unless it was for a ring…if he won’t he still has great value to a lesser team? I mentioned Oakland already I believe, and also Cleveland without a restructure….and that is where the talk is. Unless we really have a guy lined up in FA or two that would make keeping him financially untenable, it would be totally ignorant just to cut him without having some quality guys in the mix to spend the money on. Are you just “writing the Bucs off or what?” Sounds like you hope we fail. Look, I thought Dom should have gone with Rah…said so at the time….but I don’t hate the organization.

  183. mark2001 Says:

Hey guys, if we can pick up a couple FA’s so we can meet a need at OT, back up QB, or WR’s, along with moving from 4th to 3rd, and anything in trade, we are at least a break even. If it is anything that is reasonable, go for it. After extending McCoy next year, etc…he might be unaffordable anyway.

  184. Buc Neckid Says:

    Things are heating up
    Twitter Just Broke

  185. Buc Neckid Says:

    I think that they mean
    7th is 7th pick
    not 7th rounder

  186. BoJim Says:

I don’t have any Bucs gear. Only a hat that says Coors Light. I don’t even like Coors. 🙁

  187. Buc1987 Says:

Bill Polian (former GM) just said on ESPN that last seasons Revis trade could might turn out to be the worst trade in NFL history. Congrats Dominik.

  188. Demetrios Says:

IF we get anything, it probably would be a conditional pick next year especially if they can’t renegotiate his contract.

  189. Fritz50 Says:

” might turn out to be the worst trade in NFL history”

May well be true, BUT, hard to read how much this was exagerated by the NSC’s total incompetance.

  190. Buc1987 Says:

I think Revis is gone no matter what.

  191. Snook Says:

    @ RustyRhino:

    “Is this not called preparedness…”

So you’re getting “prepared” to freak out about something that hasn’t happened yet? Sounds wasteful.

  192. Buc1987 Says:

Less than 30 minutes til the dinner bell rings.

  193. Buc1987 Says:

Josh Freeman is ranked higher than McCown on top FA QB’s available.

  194. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    Can’t wait Buc1987

I just drank my 3rd espresso and watched 15 minutes of Ric Flair on YouTube, LETS GET IT GOING!!!

Fix this mess Lovie, Be a Legend!!!

Its a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!!!!
    Go Bucs!!!!

  195. bucrightoff Says:

Trade Revis (elite, in his prime), sign McCown (big question mark, mid 30’s). We are on our way to Browns south territory right now.

  196. PRBucFan Says:

I don’t want to hear one thing where people tell other people not to freak out about this Revis move or rather that they can’t or are overreacting.

Unless your the one Buc fan left on earth that hasn’t bitched or freaked out about something in recent years. (Highly doubt it)

Also some people here are suddenly “let’s trust Lovie” when they weren’t even down with the Glazers hiring Lovie in the first place ahahahaha.

I wanted him here and I love him as our coach but IF we get 0 for Revis, not a good start at all by our beloved coach.

  197. Buc Neckid Says:

    Quiet before the Storm?
Is this Silence a Good Thing?

  198. Buc1987 Says:

    “let’s trust Lovie”

Because what choice do we have?

  199. flmike Says:

Well, at least I can cancel my DirecTv Sunday Ticket now, as there’s no use in watching this pathetic crap anymore….you wanted and you got him, hope y’all happy with Lovie and the maximum of 10 wins a season and probably no post season for quite a few years…this is exactly what got him fired in Chicago, and much to my and everyone else who was hoping he had learned chagrin, he apparently hasn’t learned one damn thing….

  200. BigMacAttack Says:

If the Bucs can’t find a trade that involves a high pick then they should keep Revis. Pay the $16 Mil and keep him on the team. Cutting Revis is a big unnecessary mistake.

  201. stevek (MGM) Says:

    Buc1987,

I’d take Jeff Garcia or Brett Favre, TODAY, over Freeman. He is G-A-R-B-A-G-E!

  202. PRBucFan Says:

Lol that is a lame response 😉

  203. Buc1987 Says:

BigMac…they should keep him, but I don’t think they will.

  204. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Cheers to Realist, Lightning, 87, and Couch!

It’s funny, I feel more calm than I have in ages. I actually trust Licht (and I’m a Watson fan).

  205. PRBucFan Says:

    @BMA

    Exactly

  206. Buc1987 Says:

PRB…okay then. How about this? Trust no one. That’s the state I’m in right now.

  207. PRBucFan Says:

    Cookies for everyone!

    Ahahaha 😉

  208. Buc1987 Says:

Here we go it’s 4 PM ding ding ding ding ding.

  209. PRBucFan Says:

Atleast now your being honest broski! 😀

  210. Buc Neckid Says:

    It’s 4:00pm
    Game On!!!!

  211. Buc1987 Says:

    Cheers ODB!

  212. PRBucFan Says:

    Let’s bring in Ware

  213. cbell96825 Says:

    The sky is falling…..

    go bucs

  214. Buc Neckid Says:

Josh McCown on his way to Tampa for a “Visit”
Think he will Leave without a contract?

  215. Gorrilabuc Says:

No cutting Revis NOW Bucs owe him 1.5 mil! YESSSSSSSSSSSSS

  216. Buc Neckid Says:

    No McCluster for the Bucs
    he went to Titans

  217. bucrightoff Says:

Rescing the offer to Johnson, offer it to Ware instead. Johnson averages 6 sacks a year. Ware’s career low in sacks for a season is 6. Ware is a difference maker. Johnson is replaceable by Wallace Gilberry. Pull the offer to Johnson and give it to Ware.

  218. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    PFT rumor mill is down.

Josh McCown is such a bad idea.

    McCluster signed with Titans.

  219. Couch Fan Says:

    Damn McCluster signed with Titans

  220. bucrightoff Says:

Thank God we didn’t sign McCluster. Would have been a waste of money.

  221. cbell96825 Says:

Brandon myers 2 yr 4 million eee ok

  222. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Clinton McDonald DT is a Buc now.

  223. BucPuck Says:

He guys I think McCluster signed with the Titans.

  224. bucrightoff Says:

Clinton McDonald, DT, Seahawks to the Bucs for 4 years and 12 million. Pretty steep for what appears a depth signing (McCoy and Spence would still be starters I assume)

  225. Buc1987 Says:

Gorrilabuc …the sooner you realize that Revis is gone. The better off you will be.

  226. WalkdaPlank Says:

Not crazy about giving an average DE like Johnson 24 mil guaranteed over 5 years. Quite a commitment to a guy that hasn’t done anything extraordinary.

  227. feelthepewterpower Says:

Saffold is off the board ..signed with Oakland ;(

  228. BucPuck Says:

    McDonald is legit!

  229. Buc Neckid Says:

Johnson + McCown (Probably) + Brandon Myers TE + Clinton McDonald DT = Splash?

  230. WalkdaPlank Says:

As crazy as it seems, guess Revis has played his last game as a Buc. What a waste if time and money Dom.

  231. feelthepewterpower Says:

Brandon Albert appears to be off the board as well..signed with Miami

  232. feelthepewterpower Says:

Watson also reportedly interested in miami

  233. bucrightoff Says:

No offensive lineman coming it seems. Draft it is then, and thats absolutely how it should be done.

  234. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I don’t know why the NFL does not make all the teams front office in one big room, Free agency starts, and should look like the NY Stock Exchange. Think of the TV ratings NFL. what a show that would be!

  235. Buc Neckid Says:

I still think that the Bucs are Playing Poker with a Revis Trade coming soon.
It cost them $1.5 million and the conditional Third rounder instead of a fourth rounder, but better that than to be leveraged into dumping Revis or making a bad trade.

  236. PRBucFan Says:

Expect Anthony Collins to be a lineman here

  237. Gorrilabuc Says:

Buc1987 I was referring to him not being cut! So at lease the Bucs can ether keep him for another season or trade him for some value (which I’m against)!

  238. BucPuck Says:

@ Buc Neckid – I think the deadline for the roster bonus and the pick is tomorrow at 4 not today.

  239. bucrightoff Says:

It is tomorrow at 4pm. Its going to be cut outright or traded for a low round pick (5-7 range). Nobody is offering more than that. If they were a trade would have already been made.

  240. The_Buc_Realist Says:

correct, Revis will be traded or Cut by Wed. 4PM 3-12-2014!!!!

  241. Buc1987 Says:

Gorrilabuc …well then the roster bonus is due by tomorrow, not today. FYI.

  242. BucPuck Says:

Am I crazy for wanting Michael Johnson over Demarcus Ware? He is younger and will probably cost less.

  243. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

LB Dane Fletcher coming to Tampa for first visit.

  244. Buc Neckid Says:

I was think it was the beginning of the “Football Year”,
    Today at 4:00pm.
Either way, Revis trade will happen soon…

  245. bucrightoff Says:

You are crazy BucPuck. Ware’s all-time season low in sacks is 6. Michael Johnsons AVERAGE per year is 6. Youth matters a bit, but Ware is probably double the player, at least.

  246. PRBucFan Says:

MJ is the better pick up in the long run.

  247. PRBucFan Says:

Sacks is not the only thing to look at.

PFF had him as the 4th rated pass rusher and second against the run I believe.

He applies consistent pressure and disruption (hurries/hits/batted balls) and only missed 5 tackles last season.

1 of the best against the run.

  248. bucrightoff Says:

The Bucs issue has been what again? Stopping the run has been fine. We need pure pass rushers. Ware is a pure pass rusher. Johnson is like Bennett, decent pass rusher, much better against the run.

  249. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

MLB Dane Fletcher is coming to Tampa for a visit. If signed would it be depth or will they shift Mason outside?

  250. BucPuck Says:

The people at NFL.com have Michael Johnson rated at #3 and Ware at #9.

    http://www.nfl.com/freeagency

  251. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I really don’t know if Mason can hang on to this team. his forte is the blitz and run support. If he makes it this year, I would expect he gets replaced in the following off-season.

  252. PRBucFan Says:

Genius he’s still rated top as a pass rusher!

Against the run is a huge bonus lol.

Other than MJ seems like the Bucs are failing in the supposed revamp of the o-line.

    Asomoah to the falcants

  253. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    The_Buc_Realist, I disagree 1000%.

Foster is a very good player who has improved each year.

  254. bucrightoff Says:

Johnson is an overrated pass rusher. Again one 10 plus sack season, three seasons with 4 sacks or less. We did not sign an elite pass rusher here, we signed a solid one who we’re paying elite money to.

  255. PRBucFan Says:

Again sacks are not the only indication of being an effective pass rusher! LOL

In the top 5 of the league in pressures, hurries, hits, batted balls

  256. WalkdaPlank Says:

I like Foster at MLB. This isn’t Madden, where you dump the guy with an 85 overall for the guy with the 90 overall.

  257. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    PRBucFan Says
“Again sacks are not the only indication of being an effective pass rusher!”

For the Bucs it is the most important. We’ve been hearing that line for years and as a result we’ve had no real pass rush.

  258. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah pressures sort of matter. End of the day we’re terrible at getting to the QB and we’re paying a guy who projects as above average to very good elite money without much proof.

Another thing that helps pass rush is good corners. Are we cutting a top 3 corner, with the worst secondary in the league after him? We aren’t that dumb are we?

  259. PRBucFan Says:

lol Apparantly the concept that “pass rush” and “disruption” of passer occurs with pressures/hurries, hits, batted balls is difficult to understand.

I’ll go with PFF ratings of MJ over the apparent thought that the QB has to be sacked in order for the DE to be effective lol.

    Love it, smh lol

  260. bucfan593 Says:

Its hard to get excited without knowing what the fate is of Revis.

    Nothing here is a splash!

We still need OL, WR, CB,

Why do we need 16M if were not adding top names?

  261. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So is this thread not pinned near the top now?

  262. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    bucfan593 Says
“Why do we need 16M if were not adding top names?”

Because we need a bulk number of players. Listen to 620 right now. They are trying to name 15 guys that are guaranteed to remain in Tampa. Can you? Even with today’s guys?

  263. bucrightoff Says:

Pressures are irrelevant with the pathetic secondary it looks like we’ll be fielding next year. When the Bucs had the near worst pass defense ever, aka Pre-Revis, they studied it up and the Bucs DLine had generally 2.8 seconds from snap to before the pass was out. That is astronomically fast. Unless we have the greatest pressure generating line ever, pressures just mean the QB will be hitting the open receiver right on the numbers rather than in stride. Great?

  264. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai

it move to the top everytime Joe updates the “twitter report”

Fix this Mess Lovie, and Be a Legend!!!

Its a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!!!!
    Go Bucs!!!!

  265. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Thanks, Joe 🙂

  266. Eric S Says:

I just want to say that hopefully we will never see the words rock star by Mark Dominik’s name ever again on this site. EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  267. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tynes officially cut.

  268. Celly Says:

    @Joe, bad news….

Jags trade Gabbert to the 49ers. So, they’ll DEFINITELY be drafting a QB this year.

  269. bucrightoff Says:

Vontae Davis gets $10 million a year. Cutting Revis is looking stupider and stupider by the moment. He’s gonna get at least $12 million and maybe even the exact same $16 million on the open market.

  270. PRBucFan Says:

    “Pressures are irrelevant”

    Garbage lol

  271. PRBucFan Says:

    So far besides MJ

Epic fail addressing the o-line we kick Davin off.

  272. Sam Says:

So did Revis get cut or not?
Everyone is saying “now that Revis is gone from Tampa……” and he was owed a pretty good bonus at 4pm today eastern

  273. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tony Gonzalez released.

  274. Sam Says:

    Ah…my mistake…..4pm Wednesday.

  275. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Sam, the deadline is tomorrow.

    “Pressures are irrelevant”

    Garbage lol
    ______________________________________________________________

And thanks for not reading the rest of the post. If WRs are open in 2 seconds, you need not just pressure, but historic levels of pressure to stop that.

Pressure with poor secondary = irrelevant.

  277. WalkdaPlank Says:

Mancrush to the Jags? Without MJD? Close the Skyway before Joe can get there. 🙂

  278. PRBucFan Says:

The whole defensive line is built on pressuring the quarter back, let’s not be illogical.

Not to mention what the hell are you talking about poor secondary? Unless your insinuation Lovie/Licht don’t have a plan and they aren’t planning on going out and getting a replacement for Revis.

Anywho lol, I’m done talking a bout this with you. Agree to disagree.

  279. bucrightoff Says:

And as I’ve mentioned in almost every thread, its going to cost $10 million a year, at least, for a corner that is good. Thats what Vontae Davis and Sam Shield, good, not great, CBs got. Revis, relative to market, is worth $16 million or close to it. To cut Revis and turn around and sign Verner for $12 million would be the icing on the crap cake.

Pressuring the QB, again, doesn’t matter when the ball is out that fast. You need superstar, elite pass rushers to make an impact. We actually don’t disagree, we just need good corners. And we’re cutting a top 3 one. Forgive me, but thats not a way to build faith in the new regime.

  280. Kevin Says:

    Ware is available now…Get him!

  281. Sam Says:

i will be shocked if they cut him.(Revis)
I know everyone is saying yes its done….but I think this is to try (Foolishly) to put pressure on him to restructure.

Who trades a 1st rounder for a guy…and then cuts him the next year AFTER a pro-bowl season.

  282. bucrightoff Says:

Adam Heyward to the Redskins, aka Bucs North. Raheem will be Redskins coach before long, can’t wait.

  283. Barry Says:

Peanut Tilman on way to Tampa for visit per Adam S.

  284. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs close to deal with Tillman. He is flying in to visit and see if they can finish a deal.

  285. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Sam, Bucs have spent too much to NOT cut Revis.

  286. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Mike Jones ‏@MikeJonesWaPo 23m

  287. Spirit of '76 Says:

  288. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Josh McCown now at One Buc Place.

  289. Spirit of '76 Says:

  290. Andrew 1 Says:

    Julius Peppers officially released.

  297. Andrew 1 Says:

look, the guy even knows what his shoe color is lol. Now if you tell me what his beverage of choice is, then I’d really be impressed.

  298. Andrew 1 Says:

Thanks for keeping the few non twitter subscribing people up to date.

  299. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Water.

I’m just guessing on both counts…but no one can prove me wrong 😉

  300. WalkdaPlank Says:

A Lovie\Peppers reunion would be nice.

  301. Spirit of '76 Says:

Johnson on one side and Ware or Peppers on the other…….

  302. bucrightoff Says:

Peppers is finished so absolutely no on him. Let someone else bit the bullet on him. Ware is gonna go to a contender unless there’s a big overpayment, which we should not do

  303. Spirit of '76 Says:

Peppers is still a player and could even fit at DT. Ware is not going to be making $12 million ever again and his lack of playing time due to injuries will limit the market for him. But when he is on, oh my!

  304. SausageKingOfChicago Says:

What is the formula? Two years ago, we had decent QB pressure, but got toasted for the long pass. Last year, we fixed our defensive back problem, but suffered with the pass rush. With the current trend of the NFL, the quick passing game and yards after (short) catch seems to be the way offenses are going, so that makes it even tougher for those loading up on defensive power. If you were running things Joe, what would you suggest?

  305. PRBucFan Says:

Yea man twitter keeps you up to the moment, I made myself a Bucs list with former/current players/NFL & Buc media/BucFans and the news has been flowing all day.

    Been stuck to it lol

Just found out Revis trade unlikely to Browns, he won’t come down on his contract.

    I’m tired of his ass

  306. bucrightoff Says:

Did anyone seriously believe that Revis would take a pay cut? And as a follow up, if he were to take one, why would the Bucs not keep him?

  307. WalkdaPlank Says:

Are you kidding? This is a guy who held out on the Jets not too long ago and left then to go to a team with the worst secondary in the league. He came here for the money, and now that he’s got his millions, he ain’t lettin’ em go! He will probably be cut tomorrow. It’s a damn shame, too bad the Teflon Dom overpaid for him, along with Eric Wright, Michael Koenen (A PUNTER), Carl Nicks, Quincy Black, the list goes on.

  308. T in Orlando Says:

If Revis trade unlikely, then he should be kept. I don’t ser how we’re in die straights with the cap to let talent just walk out the door.

  309. Lucky Buccers Says:

Someone help me with this. The bucs reserve the right to convert Revis’ salary to bonus money, saving 13 mil on the cap, which they have to make up on the remaining years of his.contract. If none of his money is guaranteed, why can’t we convert it, save the cap money, and trade or release him after next season? Wouldn’t that save the money on cap this year and we would be off the hook after next?

  310. Fritz50 Says:

“Just found out Revis trade unlikely to Browns, he won’t come down on his contract.”

And yet, if he were holding out , you’d (Some would) prolly expect hm to abide by the contract he signed. Seems like that’s just what he’s doing. Since when is a man expected to re-negotiate a contract, in order to mae it easier on the other side to allow them to break it. Seems a bit crazy to me. The Bucs made the Contract, they need to man up & keep him , or cut him. Asking him to re-negotiate is one thing, being upset with him cause he won’t is nuts.

  311. Fritz50 Says:

mae wuz ‘spose to be make – sorry

  312. Spirit of '76 Says:

Revis is in a year to year contract which he can’t do much about. He took a flyer on the Bucs because they offered him insane money. just like the stunts and holdout he did in NY to force that team to pay him more. He is more interested in building his portfolio than earn rings and will get what he deserves. Greed vs. winning…. I know that some will miss his “Revis Island” and “No Fly Zone” but on a team with only 4 wins, every existing team member is expendable. For this prima donna and self above team, can’t wait to show him the door.

  313. WalkdaPlank Says:

Our secondary would be torn without him, why not keep him? His knee should be 100% now. Trade him if you can, but don’t cut him, I don’t want a second-year on-the-fence Jonthan Banks being the face of our DB’s.

  314. Spirit of '76 Says:

There are many other FA CB’s out there and we could get 2 or 3 for what we are paying Revis. In a Cover 2 he is not really an asset. By upgrading other positions with the money freed up, we are much better at several positions. He was just a money grabber and opportunist. No loss in my book.

  315. PRBucFan Says:

    Thanks but I don’t remember asking 😉

On top of that I have been one to say we should keep him as is and that all this is ridiculously stupid.

But thanks for your unneeded incorrect assumption Fritzy poo

  316. lurker Says:

wow, I missed a lot today.

  317. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Talib to the Broncos for 24 mill

  318. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m honestly thinking the if the Buc eat the 3rd and pay Revis the $1.8 million tomorrow, the Pats may have to make an offer. Especially if the Bucs sign Tillman.

  319. AfroBuc Says:

Adam Hayward signed with the Redskins. I’m gonna miss that guy’s heart and spirit on the team. Wasn’t he the longest tenured Buc outside of Economos?

  320. Fritz50 Says:

“Thanks but I don’t remember asking”

Sorry, wasn’t meant to be an attack on you, hence the ‘some would’ in the box. Was meant to point out the general insanity of criticism for a guy not making it easy for a team to screw him. Badly worded, just couldn’t properly articulate it.
