Report: Bucs Trying To Trade Revis Quickly

March 10th, 2014

RevispickUpdate 9:16 p.m.: Adam Schefter is now reporting Revis will be cut Wednesday afternoon if he’s not traded.

It’s no surprise there’s demand across the NFL for Darrelle Revis, and it’s no surprise trade chatter is heating up as the clock ticks toward the sounding of the free agency dinner bell.

Joe’s friend and reliable SiriusXM NFL Radio voice and FOX Sports writer Alex Marvez is Twittering tonight that the Bucs are the ones driving a potential Revis trade.

@AlexMarvez – Again, @TBBuccaneers really trying hard to trade Darrelle Revis. Hoping to strike a deal pretty quickly. Not sure of suitors yet

You can trust that Marvez is not tossing crap against the wall. He’s legitimate.

Now just because the Bucs are trying to deal Revis, that doesn’t mean they will. The return has to be there.

Last week, the Boston Globe suggested a Revis deal to New England that would potentially return the Bucs the Patriots’ first round pick plus standout rookie cornerback Logan Ryan, who earns peanuts as a third-round pick in 2013.

Joe trusts Lovie Smith implicitly on the defensive side of the football. If Lovie did a deal like the one proposed, then Joe would get it. The reality is Revis’ $16 million a year can be used to add a load of talent to the Bucs, and recouping a first-round pick and a legitimate starter isn’t anything to sneeze at. Trading Revis also means the Bucs could keep their 2014 third-round pick, rather than sending it to the Jets to complete last year’s Revis trade. Instead, the Bucs would send their fourth-rounder this year.

If Revis is dealt, then Joe would be stunned if Charles “Peanut” Tillman isn’t wearing that funky new Bucs uniform soon after.

    Noooooooo!

  2. bucrightoff Says:

Are we trying to be worse than the Jags? Race to the bottom to get Jameis?

  3. Phillip Says:

    @Joe

If he is traded we better grab Verner and try to move quickly on Vontae Davis

  4. Jerry Says:

So if the Bucs trade Revis to the Patriots, will this also be blamed on Schiano that we send our best players to Belicheat?

  5. Matt Says:

Short of a trade in the next two days, the Buccaneers are expected to release CB Darrelle Revis by 4 p.m. Wednesday, per league sources.

  6. deminion Says:

Pull the trigger we need everything it’s long term thinkn

  7. Jeffobrien Says:

If we get rid of Revis I am done with this team. Top 10 in salary cap give up a 1st and 3rd. 4th if we trade
Him and give up are 1 star player. This is going to be the nail in the coffin

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Marvez IS tossing crap against the wall.

  9. Patrick Says:

There’s a reason our team has not been relevant for a long time. We get rid of every good player right after we bring them in.

  10. canadian bucsfan Says:

    Don’t do it Litch!

  11. Jerry Says:

Adam Schefter reporting the Bucs plan to RELEASE Revis by Wednesday.

Yes you read that right… RELEASE him.

Great way for this regime to win over the fan base right off the bat…. If they don’t win games this year, calls for Lovie’s head is going to start coming real quick.

  12. deminion Says:

Why release him we need picks

  13. Couch Fan Says:

Kind of feel bad for Revis. Everybody wants him, nobody wants him. The man cant find a place to stay long enough to call home as he keeps getting passed around for draft picks.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Adam Schefter is full of it too.

  15. Eric Says:

    Others are backing it up.

Would be a really smart move and show these guys are serious, willing to do what’s best, not the most popular.

  16. lurker Says:

    also…

ESPN’s Adam Caplan mentions free agent CB Alterraun Verner as a potential Revis replacement in Tampa.

    and

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports the Bucs are the “frontrunners” for free agent DE Michael Johnson.

over 8 million per is a better value than bennet at over 8 million per.

  17. Jerry Says:

Because they want the money to overpay other free agents.

  18. bucrightoff Says:

Cutting him? Really? Lol fire Licht already? Wow we are in trouble. This franchise is a mess.

  19. lurker Says:

why cut him, that would be idiotic.

  20. St.louis Bucs fan Says:

why not try a redo his deal before releasing or trading him?? I don’t like it at all! hate to see him go just as he gets healthy. bad idea!!! BUC IT IM OUT!!!

  21. JJ Jones Says:

Nobody is trading for that contract. He’s getting released.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    The Bucs won’t release him.

  23. dee Says:

Thats 40mill in cap space do it

  24. Phillip Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai

Schefty Alex and PFT all reported it among others… When there’s smoke there is usually fire…

Some might not like it but honestly we aren’t 1 player away from being SB contending and we weren’t last year either.. By the time we get there (2 years min) he will have no trade value whatsoever…

  25. Architek Says:

    $&@& just got real….

  26. Eric Says:

They can trade him if he agrees to renegotiate his deal.

  27. Richard Dickson Says:

Remember, it was Dominik and Schiano that traded those picks and gave Revis that contract. Smith and Licht shouldn’t be shackled because the previous regime wildly overpaid for a corner, not if they think that $16m can be better spent elsewhere.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I hear Myron Lewis wants to rejoin the Bucs!!! The Revis trade should pave the way.

  29. Couch Fan Says:

I wouldn’t put anything passed this organization. We were told to expect some surpries…

    Well… “Surprise?” Lol

    Hope this is not true.

  30. bucrightoff Says:

Verner is gonna cost $10 million a year, likely more. Brandon Carr got that a few years ago and Verner is better than Carr. Minnesota will pay $10m I would think. Verner at $10m or more is not worth a first, a fourth and Revis, because that’s the cost. I can actually see Revis back on the Jets, Rex would love it no doubt.

  31. PewterPirates Says:

I’d take that trade without a problem but if we cut him Lovie better have a plan in place to use that cap room to make a top 10 defense. No excuses

  32. Jerry Says:

Bucs are very, very quickly becoming the Cleveland Browns of the NFC.

  33. Theodore Says:

I don’t what scheme you run, you don’t cut top CBs.

  34. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I tried to tell you guys that we should try to get a second round pick from Pats of Denver ( end of the round 2nd) with another pick based on production.

Revis has value, just not value at 16 million when team are running 4 wr. You would have to be an idiot to pay him 16 million a year.

  35. bucrightoff Says:

Who’s offering more than a 6th if they can get him for free by being patient? If its out he’s gettintg cut, the Bucs have zero leverage. Revis will not renegotiate, we know this from his multiple holdouts in New York.

  36. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

And the Bucs are waiting until the 11th hour to do this because?????????

  37. The_Buc_Realist Says:

They have been trying to trade him the whole time without looking like they want to trade him, Because if other teams know they want to trade him, they have to release him and get nothing. except 16 million in cap room.

  38. Greg Dyer Says:

Contoversial yes, though I would wait to judge! Obviously there is a plan in place. Sorry guys but don’t judge until all the smoke has cleared. That may not be until the draft. These Bucs are not going to do something stupid! Trust these coaches and administration…. My two cents…

  39. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“why not try a redo his deal before releasing or trading him??”

I suspect that’s how Revis has remained a Buc this long. I suspect that one of Licht’s first phone call on behalf of the Bucs was to Revis agent to renegotiate the deal.

EVERYBODY loves Revis….very FEW however can justify paying 16 million to ANY Cornerback.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Update 9:16 p.m.: Adam Schefter is now reporting Revis will be cut Wednesday afternoon if he’s not traded.”

Adam is mistaken. They would have to cut him by 4PM Tuesday.

The Bucs would only owe a small portion of Revis’. salary if they keep him pass the deadline.

They can still keep him longer if they choose to.

Adam releasing this supposed info has just killed any chance of the Bucs getting any thing in a trade, not that they could have done a trade in time.

  41. Phillip Says:

    @Theodore

They are trying to trade him though…

But even if it was a straight up cut then.. Would you rather have Verner Johnson and McCluster for about 2 or 3 million north of 16 million or Revis?

  42. The Real Drew Says:

You CANNOT release him. If you don’t get a 1st rounder and something else for him then it was a terrible, franchise setback move. We can afford to hold onto him until a trade is possible.

  43. lurker Says:

a team could step up to trade to guarantee that he goes there. if he hits the open market, revis decides where to go. so Denver can trade for him so the pats don’t get him. I am sure he would love to stick it to the jets 2x/yr.

  44. Oahubuc Says:

    Fire Licht.

  45. deminion Says:

    Need picks!!!!

  46. bucrightoff Says:

Why do we even need to get rid of him? If Lovie can’t incorperate, at worst, a top 3 corner in the league, then I doesn’t really give me a lot of hope that he’s learned anything. Adapt to your personel, his scheme is outdated and will get eaten up in this division with Brees and Ryan.

  47. The Real Drew Says:

The only leverage now is against the Patriots, that if he is released he will sign with the Jets again. Its so weak though

  48. Jrokk26 Says:

Trade maybe? But that’s a big maybe!?!?! Giving up and releasing a premier COVER CB would be down right stupid!!! If Lovie/Licht start the 2014 football year by releasing Revis and getting nothing in return….that would be one of the worst moves in franchise history!!!

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Another possibility just occurred to me. The Bucs could have leaked this info in order to gain leverage to redo Revis’ contract.

  50. Andrew 1 Says:

WHAAAAT!?!? I cant believe it! I dont really agree with it, But if the buc’s hearts are set on dumping Revis, then lets at least get 1 first round pick and be done with it. Hell, Id rather take a only a second round pick instead of just cutting him for nothing. Might even go as low as a 3rd round pick, my point is getting something is better then cutting him and getting nothing.

  51. Macabee Says:

I’m going to raise Joe’s ire here because I do not believe Lovie and Licht have unilaterally decided to do this. I believe that this directive came from on high.

Early in the course of this discussion, Rick Stroud opined that this transaction was never liked by the Glazers and may have been a prominent reason for the release of Dominik and Schiano.

Joe has respectfully disagreed with that notion, but I buy it. If Revis agreed to a new contract that put him somewhere north of Sam Shields, perhaps this could have been averted. But the Revis I recall from his NY days is not one to lower his demands.

Reasonable minds should prevail, but at the eleventh hour, it may be too late for that!

  52. The Real Drew Says:

    The Raiders can afford him

  53. RealityCheck Says:

Some of these comments are hilarious. I like Revis and I enjoyed cheering for him last year but it’s not very hard to understand why you’d trade him. He’s 1 guy getting paid above his positions pay grade/importance. We have NO CLUE what the Bucs roster will look like on opening day and what players Lovie needs to run a sound defense. Have a little faith.

  54. anotherbucsfan Says:

Bull(p)it they won’t release him how does that even make sense? I understand a trade if there is the right return but release doesn’t make sense unless they are throwing a lot of $$ in fa and they need Revis’s money really bad.

  55. NY Buc Says:

Logan Ryan eh…somewhere Schiano would be sitting back appreciating the irony of the Patriots stealing one of the best talents currently on the Bucs from the new HC/GM and also sending another former Rutgers guy to the Bucs (knowing how much Bucs fans love former Rutgers players) all while he’s taking $3M of the Glazer’s money. This will be an interesting off season to say the least.

  56. The Real Drew Says:

I guess we’ll see what Licht is made of after everything is done, quick to lose or patient to win.

  57. Jerry Says:

Lovie wants to throw a lot of money at old Bears players…McCown, Timman, and Hester coming to Tampa!

  58. Lewis Says:

    Thanks ”Rockstar”

  59. Architek Says:

It’s simple economics in motion because it’s not financially responsible to pay a CB that much money and we have so many needs, I just hope we can get a deal done for the right price.

I like Revis but it’s proven that elite CB doesn’t equate to a ring – we have to build up front!

  60. The Real Drew Says:

Maybe the Raiders would give 2 second rounders, just hoping here.

  61. Architek Says:

Jerry why don’t you go complain about Schiano somewhere else, this is a Bucs site and we are behind Lovie 100%.

Did you forget that we were 4-12 with a elite CB and no DEs.

  62. Buc1987 Says:

Told you fools anything is possible. 16 million is too much dayum money.

  63. Jerry Says:

OK Architek, what elite DE are we going to sign? Jared Allen doesnt want to come here. So who do you throw money at? 10 million a year for Michael Johnson who got 3 sacks last year?

  64. bucfever40 Says:

If he gets released without the benefit of a BLOCKBUSTER trade, this will not only be a very bad pr move, it would set them back several years, I find it hard to believe this to be true, Im pretty bothered by this, its a swing year that can really change this teams fortunes in a big way, or one idiotic move like outright cutting him could mark a Bo Jackson like move or Doug Williams which in both those cases were followed by several years ot futility, and constantly chasing their tale…don’t do it!

  65. The Real Drew Says:

I’m tired of these a-holes leaking this info, to teams and the media.

  66. Kansasbuc Says:

If they cut Revis they are the most dumbest group of HC/GM tandem I have ever seen.

Everyone keeps talking about how much money we’ll save.

Who cares about the money when your constantly losing.

“we can use the money on other players”

Who knows how well they will pan out. Revis is very consistent and excellent at what he does. Most of the players we are looking at (i.e. McCown, Johnson) have not been very consistent. Revis IS THE BEST AT HIS POSITION. I would rather use the money on him then to give it to other players that MAY/MAY NOT pan out.

This is not nuts!!!! If we release Revis we better sign EVERY superstar player coming into free agency.

  67. Kansasbuc Says:

We keep talking about “paying a CB that much money”. Well, who else are we going to pay???

We have no QB that demands that much money.

Why not keep Revis until that time comes up (probably no time in the near future).

You have to be elite players and no one in this free agency is close to elite; Revis is!

I would rather keep Revis rather than lose him and overpay a bunch of “C” to “B” grade players.

  68. Glennon Mob Says:

It’s not easy but it has to be done.

  69. Harry Says:

This is f-ed up. I get how his salary and a 3rd rd pick can help us. But cant a good coach take advantage of the All-World play of Revis?? I am very surprised by this. Average CBs are making $10M per.

  70. Andrew 1 Says:

It’s to much money, I get that. But think about if for a second, If we just cut Revis outright without pulling off ANY kind of trade, we essentially gave up a 1st round pick to get a top CB for 1 lost, horrific season. Where’s the “value”, as Licht puts it, in that? We would essentially get no return on our short term investment. Ditch the Blockbuster trade concept, get what you can, and cut your losses. Thats only if the bucs are really considering cutting Revis of course. Like a few others have said, this could just be a ploy to get Revis to restructure his contract.

  71. Jerry Says:

2009 all over again is what this going to turn out to be.

  72. nate Says:

    Im going to puke

  73. lion Says:

Do you guys seriously think the Bucs would admit they would cut Revis? Highly unlikely scenario.

  74. RustyRhinos Says:

    @ NY Buc
    Right on!

  75. CJO Says:

This franchise no matter who’s in the offices at One Buc have any sense of what they want to do…. I got it let’s trade of the 2 or 3 shutdown corners in the NFL right now or better yet let’s let him walk for nothing and bring in a 30 something year old CB (Tillman)… I mean it’s hard enough dealing with those ridiculously designed jerseys, now this…

  76. zam Says:

That deal if it’s more than just a rumor is idiotic. Perhaps it’s a threat to get Revis to sign a more liveable contract.

If it’s not then the Bucs are throwing away elite players that you need to get extremely lucky to get. He’s worth the money, especially as salary cap increases will move all salaries up.

  77. Brandon Says:

It all comes down to, $16 million is way too much to pay a freaking CB…that’s Franchise QB money for crying out loud. I was dead set against this stupid deal from happening last season and the dynamic duo still pulled it off… So we get a one year rental from a half healthy Revis…what does it cost? A freaking 1st rounder and 4th… brilliant move, geniuses! Schiano is the worst, screw Dominik too. Neither should work again.

  78. flmike Says:

No matter who made the original deal, no franchise is going to give up a first and a 4th (possibly a 3rd) for nothing but a year rental. If no deal gets done, Revis will remain a Buc, that was simply to high a price to pay for literally nothing in return. If the do just release Revis, both Smith and Litch should be fired immediately, because YOU not your predecessors just cost the Bucs 2 premium picks and got nothing back but cap space.

  79. phil Says:

I wasn’t in favor of the Revis trade when it happen but now that he is here why would you get rid of your best player on the team? Unless we are getting 3 number one picks I don’t think we should be trading him. We have plenty of cap space.

  80. BoJim Says:

“Last week, the Boston Globe suggested a Revis deal to New England that would potentially return the Bucs the Patriots’ first round pick plus standout rookie cornerback Logan Ryan, who earns peanuts as a third-round pick in 2013.”

I would do that. Maybe Denver?

    I’d rather keep Revis though.
