“Speed In Space” Is Top Of Mind

March 10th, 2014

Rampant rumors of Chiefs free agent speedster/versatile slot receiver and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster heading back home to Tampa Bay are no surprise.

And it’s not because the Bucs are downright desperate for a No. 3 receiver after the Kevin Ogletree debacle.

Joe remembers hearing the expressed desire for “speed in space” by new Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford.

Bucs fans and Joe have no clue what Tedford’s offense will look like; he’s gone several directions in his career. But Tedford doesn’t hide the fact that his CFL roots taught him how to use the whole field and get footballs in playmakers’ hands with room to be dangerous. (Side note: Joe has a hunch Tedford would have found a way to toss a swing pass to LeGarrette Blount once in a while.)

To do what he wants, Tedford said, he needs that “speed in space.” Right now, the only speed the Bucs have is in three guys coming off major surgery, Doug Martin, Jeff Demps and Mike Williams. Yes, Williams wasn’t lightning fast to begin with, but he is a guy who has proven to be elusive and dangerous after the catch.

The pride of Largo High, McCluster, a four-year veteran at 25 years old, is coming off his best season.  He returned 58 punts for 686 yards and two touchdowns and caught 53 passes for 511 yards and two touchdowns.

If Bucs general manager Jason Licht is seeking “value” free agents, then the multi-talented McCluster likely is high on his list.

However, the Kansas City Star is reporting tonight that McCluster has “four or five” teams after him and will sign when the free agency bell rings tomorrow afternoon. Will the Bucs get in a bidding war?

Joe- these incessant app redirects suck
It makes the average experience on your site arduous and annoying at best. Is it really worth it?

Joe’s explained this before. The redirects happen intermittently only to some mobile users, and only mobile users. Joe can’t fix it completely. Joe makes no money from the redirects. It happens to Joe, but Joe just closes the redirect and it’s not bothersome. –Joe

Funny Joe, I guess that Belichick could not figure it out as well, as last year was the lowest pass to rush attempt ratio that Blunt has ever had. There is plenty to bash old coaches over so lets no make stuff up!

Mighty sensitive aren’t you? How exactly did Joe bash anyone? Sheesh. –Joe

Don’t kill me Joe! This is news!

I think a Revis trade is very likely.

  9. bigpoppabuc Says:

Hmmm. …he’s a wildcard. What would he be on the roster? KR/RB? Or KR/RB? What would it mean for a guy like James? I love the idea of bringing in playmakers for Tedfords offense, but McCluster is not one I saw coming.

  10. Bucky23 Says:

Basically just threw away a first round pick last season if they get rid of Revis this year. PUKEEE

  11. bucrightoff Says:

Trading Revis would be pretty hilarious. At that point trade VJax and Doug and get everything you can, because trading Revis is giving up on the season. Johnthan Banks and Leonard Johnson as starters sounds like a lot of 41-17 losses.

  12. Kevin Says:

I would have to bet that the only reason Belichick didn’t throw to Blount is because he had Vareen and Ridley who are both smaller, faster more elusive backs. Tedford would have McCluster all over the field. That would be fun to watch with another big playmaker added to the mix.

  13. kh Says:

Would it be “throwing away” a first round pick if we got a 1st round pick back this year? I would be shocked if we just released Revis. Regardless, the good teams like the Patriots don’t waffle on mistakes, they admit them and put them behind them and move forward. If Licht and Lovie think Revis is burdening their rebuilding efforts then I approve of whatever they think is best and won’t sit here and pretend like I know better than them, like a lot on here do, regardless of who the coach/GM is.

  14. kh Says:

@Kevin – you’re ignoring a major factor, Blount never was and never will be good in pass pro. If you can’t block for Brady then you will never get 3rd down reps with the Patriots.

  15. Eric Says:

Trading Revis makes perfect sense. Ill bet he is a bronco by tomorrow.

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

If we recoup a 1st and 3rd then trading Revis would be good value. Two 2nds would be okay value. Anything less would be a debacle. No debacles, please and thank you.

  17. Jerry Says:

Im done with the Bucs if they trade revis and bust the picks. Im serious… Im not paying good money to watch an NFL team that trades away pro-bowlers so it can draft unproven college players.

  18. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- sorry I haven’t seen this addressed but mobile users are a large majority of the visitors to your site I would bet. (That would be inaccurate. –Joe)

Seems to me that it would be a good idea to get to the bottom of this mysterious app redirect (which by nature can only occur with mobile devices) issue since it is way more common than you let on and these app designers are getting free ad eyeballs from your loyal and enormously patient visitors to this site.

Actually, it’s NOT more common than Joe lets on. Joe’s actually does intermittent checking with mobile readers via Twitter. –Joe
    Go Bucs!

  19. Eric Says:

We get more than picks. Frees up Money for FA’s and sign our own.

    Pass rush > Revis

  20. lurker Says:

    also…

ESPN’s Adam Caplan mentions free agent CB Alterraun Verner as a potential Revis replacement in Tampa.

    and

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports the Bucs are the “frontrunners” for free agent DE Michael Johnson.

over 8 million per is a better value than bennet at over 8 million per.

  21. DallasBuc Says:

Joe will “leave it.” If Joe was that interested, Joe would have a “complaint/feedback” button. Do you really think Joe is so dumb that he’d leave a problem in place that affected more than a tiny fraction of people?–Joe

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Did you really have to delete my last comment? Maybe you are the sensitive one today? I provided an accurate user experience. Sorry you are not open about it

If you only provided your personal accurate user experience minus the BS commentary and theories, then Joe would have left it.–Joe

  23. clafollett Says:

    @DallasBuc,

It definitely runs Javascript. The question is if you can turn it off. I may have to check out my wife’s iPhone 5S to see.

  24. Sexton Hardcastle Says:

@DallasBuc – I use Safari and have the same problem. I visit quite a few other websites and this is the only one I have the app redirect issue with, so you’re not alone.

  25. DallasBuc Says:

Sexton- I didn’t think so but that was just one of my BS theories I guess!

Look, you’ve been banned from commenting before and were let back in. Joe doesn’t appreciate those who make Joe waste time babysitting comments that inaccurately attack Joe. You’ve made a load of assumptions and inaccurate statements about Joe’s business. There’s really no reason for it. It’s malicious and needless. Please stop. Joe was very clear that this problem is for a small fraction of mobile users, and it is intermittent, and mobile users are a minority of Joe’s readers. Joe is aware of the problem and is unable to fix it at this time. Additionally, it’s really not a huge inconvenience, as Joe has experienced it himself. –Joe

  26. stanglassman Says:

I have told a lot of bucs fans about this site over the years and when I ask them how they like it they always mention the overwhelming ads, esp the auto play ones, saying they would visit more often if it wasn’t for the obnoxious ads.

  27. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- I am confused by what you feel were malicious attacks on you or your business. (remainder deleted by Joe)

In your comment above at 9:13 p.m., Joe already addressed this. You don’t get to make up stuff about Joe’s business, aka claims you make that aren’t true. There’s no reason for it. –Joe

  28. Joe Says:

Hope someone out there can help me circumvent these app redirects.

As Joe wrote to you previously, Joe also has this same issues periodically when on his smartphone. One click of a button and those redirects are gone. A bit irritating, yes, but very simple to overcome.

Would love to see Dex come back to Tampa. He is a good dude, went to school with him at Largo. He was a grade below me, but did have a few classes with him. He would be a great fit here and fill two needs at once.

  30. Bucs55 Says:

I’m sick of people saying if they trade Revis they will be done with the bucs …. good bye no one needs fans like ya ether way not one player makes a team that’s y is a 53 man roster smh

  31. bigpoppabuc Says:

I have only visited this site via mobile phone and I have never had pop up or redirect problems. (knocks on wood). By now I’m pretty numb to internet advertisements anyway.
