One More Year For Bobby Rainey

March 5th, 2014

bobby rainey 1222Without all the boring details of what it means to become an exclusive rights free agent, the Bucs avoided that situation with running back Bobby Rainey. They signed him today to a one-year deal, yes, a one-year deal for 2014.

Rainey enters his third NFL season. He started with the Ravens and sports a 2013 Super Bowl ring.

Rainey did a heck of a job off his coach late last season. There’s no question the Bucs have a deep stable of running backs, with Doug Martin, Mike James and Rainey, the only one of the bunch not coming off a major injury.

Martin, James, and Demps. Our backfield us set. A CUT demps

  2. BoJim Says:

    @pablo

Agreed. Cut Demps but keep Rainey? I think Rainey would fit fine as number 3 back.

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think Pablo mean Martin, James and Rainey. Cut Demps. I really could care less about Demps. He’ll never amount to anything in the NFL.

I wouldn’t mind James moving to FB and going after another late round RB.

  4. lurker Says:

go for late round fullback. james is great right where he is, and maybe as a number 1 rb.

  5. biff barker Says:

Can’t see how this can hurt in any way. Good player on the cheap.

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Question.

Does Rainey remind anyone else of a young Dunn?

  7. Macabee Says:

Bucs trying to re-sign FB Lorig. Have Lonnie Pryor/FSU, could look at J.C. Copeland/LSU in late round.

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buccaneer Bonzai

meh… a little bit. I would say Dunn was quicker and more elusive.

Rainey is a nifty player though. I like how he use his short stature to his advantage by hiding behind blockers, which catches the defense off guard with how quickly he hits the hole. By the time they know it, hes gone. The bucs obviously saw something they liked. Happy to see him at least get a shot.

    Joe,

A couple of weeks ago I said the Bucs needed some Scumbags to toughen up the team…

Cortland Finnegan is supposedly getting cut when the league year starts. Now That’s what I’m talking about….

Finnegan and C. Tillman > Revis for 2-3 mill less… True Story!

  10. Kevin Says:

Rainey had 2 good games. One was what, one 90 yard run for a TD, then 3o yards the rest of the game, then he sucked the rest of the year. Hopefully he doesn’t HAVE to be on the field too often. I thought Mike James looked great!!! 7th round pick….c’mon that was a great pick. Martin, James and a new name would be nice. Counting down the days for things to shake up a bit.

  11. Brandon Says:

Good signing. He showed he can be a quality RB and with a cheap deal he could be shipped fir some change.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Bonzai…nope. Surprisingly I just looked it up and Rainey is actually smaller than him though.

But being a Noles and Bucs fan I saw a lot of Warrick Dunn. Dunn was definitely more shifty.

Tell you who does remind me of Dunn, and that’s Dougie on some of his runs. He runs low to the ground a lot of the time. Of course Dougie is probably stronger than Dunn, but the style is similar to me.

Ahhh those were the days I miss. Cheering on Dunn, Alstott and the D. Then in the next few minutes screaming the words f-ing Dilfer.

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc 1987

lmao Dilfer!!! I remember he used to get so pissed too! lol every time I think about his bucs days, I cant help but laugh. Then he decided to play better and get a ring, making bucs fans everywhere just shake their heads.

  14. WalkdaPlank Says:

Idk Rainey seems more like Caddy back in the day than Dunn. Caddy was a but more expkosive and fun to watch though. God I miss those days. Hopefully Doug has a good year ahead of him. No more deep passes to the guy for crying out loud.

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

    *a bit more explosive

  16. Mumbles Says:

Smart to go 1 year for ERFA, not 2 as earlier reported. Next year wil be a RFA. If he still shows promise, he can be kept with a cheap tender. If he was a 1 year wonder, the Bucs can walk away!

  17. BucsfaninChina Says:

@Sethb so you are saying we can trade a Pro Bowl CB for not one, but two recently cut players for almost the same price? I just dont believe it.

  18. Seth B Says:

    @Bucsfan in China,

Charles Tillman was cut? Last i saw he was just a Free Agent and probably the most successful Cover-2 CB in the last 5 years and excelled in Lubby’s system. Pro Bowl 2011 and 2012 tore a biceps last season. Still was NFL Man of the year last season.

As for Cortland Finnegan he was injured last year too. Before last season he was a top NFL Free Agent he signed a 5 year 50 million contract last March. I like the in your face attitude he brings, he may not be Pro Bowl Calibur but he’s damn sure near it.

You can get Tillman for 4-5 million a year and Finnegan around 5-6.

Your looking at like 10-12 million for 2 of the top 5 CB’s over the last 5 years. May not be Revis but its 2 players. Plus you save 4-6 million for another Offensive Lineman or Pass Rusher.

But more than anything I like to offer the opinion that the bucs need some criminals and scumbags on this team. Not Kellan Winslow “Me” type players but a guy who might get in a bar fight from time to time… JMO

  19. Bucsfan92 Says:

I actually like the idea of bringing in finnagen. I think he would make an awesome slot cb. Dude can make tackles, he’s physical and that’s always a plus in the slot.

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

Seth B- Tillman’s like 32 or something and Finnegan is a huge step down from Revis. If we didn’t already have Revis, I’d say yeah, why not.
And what, Williams and Spence aren’t scumbag enough?!!!
I know what you mean though. We need some ‘tude.

I like the Rainey signing. It’s one of very few positions we won’t need to worry about.
