Donald Penn Reacts With A Picture

March 4th, 2014

The growing assault on Donald Penn has reached the desk of Donald Penn, or at least the smartphone of the Bucs’ ironman.

Penn responded on Twitter yesterday with the following photo and words of thanks.

@DPenn70 – Lots of talk and rumors going around about me and next season thank u 4 the motivation workout#1 done workout#2 later

Pennweights

Joe hates to get graphic, but Joe spends a lot of time the Bucs locker room and routinely sees Penn in his underwear. Penn doesn’t qualify as slovenly. You don’t see Penn and say, ‘Damn, how does a guy that size succeed in the NFL.’ It’s just not the case, though Joe realizes fans and the rubber shirt crowd disagree.

Joe predicts Penn will prevail, whether it’s in Tampa or somewhere else, for one reason: he’s still a good left tackle. Panthers stud defensive end spoke with ease about Penn’s prowess at the Pro Bowl, in case you missed it.

  1. Sammy Watkins Mob Says:

I really hope Penn is still here next season

    SAMMY WATKINS #7

  2. Andrew 1 Says:

You’re welcome Penn. Good to see you’re fighting back. If he gets to 315, and cuts his salary in half (which would still make him an above average paid LT) then yea, I would be happy to see Penn back, with competition though. After all he is a leader on this team, and you want guys like that on your roster.

  3. d-money Says:

If i was an NFL player I wouldn’t want to play in this town.

The fans around here are just plain ignorant.

If you look at all the problems on this team and you think the place to start fixing things is Donald Penn then you really haven’t got a clue.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Strictly Business…..you cut when you can or have to cut….you raise when you have to raise….Supply & Demand!!! Nothing personal, Donald!! Good luck….

  5. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Could it be 2 years too late???

  6. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ d-money

Top priority? heck no. Still on the list though.

  7. ander Says:

penn is still a solid tackle. i hear all this talk about roberts from the chiefs but i honestly dont see that as much of an upgrade. bucs should cut joseph even though he is one of my favs and have penn nicks zuttah, and draft a right guard in the 2nd round along with dotson.

  8. lightningbuc Says:

Unfortunately for Penn, workout #1 came right after lunch #3

  9. Couch Fan Says:

Good for him. I hope he uses it as motivation to be better than last year because he played bad. Glennon or whoever the QB will be, is going to need more than what he gave them last year.

  10. theDON Says:

Go get em Penn. Big things from him and the BUCS this year. LEts remember how many coaches this guy has seen come and go over the years. good god, some consistency would be nice. Lucky this guy hasnt blasted out of here already.

  11. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Hmmm…curious to hear a replay on Steve White’s take on Donald Penn from one of the Tampa radio shows this morning.

  12. biff barker Says:

The demise of Penn has been greatly exaggerated.

  13. Nick2 Says:

That sure looks like cgi to me.

  14. terraj35 Says:

Notice he’s wearing a black shirt lol There’s no way they can pay Penn what he’s owed. Restructure or walk. Who would give him nearly that much? No one.

  15. Capt. Tim Says:

    D-Money
Your post was an oasis of intelligence, in a sea of Stupidity.
Not one of the” Penn is no good” posters knows even the most fundamental basics of Football. They read something somewhere- then assume it’s right, and post it. They are unable to actually tell what’s happening during the game.
As You said, the most uneducated fans in the league.
I love living here, but wouldn’t want to play football here.

Penn is an above average player, and one of the most demanding positions in the Game. He has been dominant. Has been incredibly consistent. Has never missed a game. Truly one of the all time great Bucs. A probowler, who would have been more, if he had been
    number one pick

Still think we trade him. At this point in his career, he doesn’t deserve to be stuck on a rebuilding team. So the man the resect he’s earned, and let him play for a contender- meybe get a ring!

Once he’s gone, meybe the clue around here will realize what they had- while we spend years searching for another left tackle

  16. theDON Says:

right on Capt Tim. Bucs play better, Penn will be better too. Its a team concept after all. Dude has had 11 offensive line coaches

  17. Andrew 1 Says:

If the bucs are completely satisfied with Penn, Then why are they looking at other LTs? Unless the report of them looking at Albert is complete bull sh!t, then they are at least looking at their options. You dont do that unless your not satisfied with him. Penn was ONCE a dominant LT. There was a time when he would rarely get beat. At this point in time however, he is an average LT. So why wouldn’t you want something better than average at arguably the second most important position on offense? no, the problem is some fans think they know more than an NFL team. You could say they are looking at a LT, and some fans would say they are wrong in doing so.

  18. buc89 Says:

Summary of story: Joe spends a lot of time looking at Penn in his underwear lol.

  19. Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

Is that really one 45 pound plate on each side? AND he looks like he’s struggling, unless he’s done like 50 of them I’m not impressed. Not to mention the picture looks as if a 5 year old colored it at the table while waiting for the food.

  20. bucrightoff Says:

But if we keep Penn, and draft Johnny, and Johnny suffers a career ender because Penn let Cameron Jordan through….you’ll be so heartbroken Joe I don’t know how you’ll go on.

  21. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Coach Tim

And you say years searching, I guess there is zero possibility that we get one of those 3 top tackles in the draft then. Please go tell the bucs to cross them off their board.

  22. owlykat Says:

I strongly doubt that the Ravens will let their LT walk. Dotson deserves a chance to start at LT. Then you bring in a RT in Free Agency and let Meredith and Penn compete with him.

  23. theDON Says:

deserves got nothing to do with it. @ Owlycat

  24. PRBucFan Says:

Seems like the Bucs will be going after Eugene Monroe strong come FA

Penn better fight and fight hard.

  25. WalkdaPlank Says:

If dirtbag can stand it here with worse TB fans than the Bucs, Penn sure can. Feel bad for him though.

  26. Macabee Says:

Penn can play and some of the best DEs in the league will attest to that. Ask Jared Allen if he can play? Lovie’s words should be taken seriously but from a motivational standpoint, is meant to slap that piece of pie out of Penn’s mouth and have him take his job seriously again.

Remember when Dominik refused to give Penn the long-term contract, Penn went to California, trained hard, took off the weight, and came to play. This is what I expect to see this time. Penn is reading this and knows what time it is. Penn is vocal – notice that we haven’t heard a tweet from him until today! He’s been loafing and he knows it! Penn can play when he’s in shape and it looks like he understands that. This is good news!

  27. PRBucFan Says:

Only problem I see is that it seems like a pattern.

    Up down up down

Hopefully he doesn’t need to be told he’s loafing again to give it his all.

  28. Patrick in VA Says:

How about you get motivated by striving for greatness and not just to stick it to the naysayers or to save your job. You’ve got the best corner in the game on your team who has a legendary off season regimen, why not pay him a visit.

  29. bucsfan85 Says:

look how fat he looks .. typical penn only working when rumors start swirling let this bum go!

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Don Penn is an Ironman, who I predict will still be playing for Tampa, when the season starts.
I am glad to see Don is using all this crap as motivation.

  31. MadMax Says:

Guard or backup please….know what I saw last year.

  32. Andrew 1 Says:

Penn at guard would be interesting. I dont think he has much experience if any at guard, but he might actually excel at it.

  33. Mike10 Says:

Atta boy Penn… Get at it!

  34. Oahubuc Says:

Let a solid LT who doesn’t miss games walk and put Dotson over there? Yeah, no thanks. Dotson is fine where he is, and so is Penn. The interior is where we need to be looking.

  35. PRBucFan Says:

Nope, I’m sure they would sign someone else.

Eugene Monroe is my bet, he’s hitting FA and is already being linked as a target of the Bucs.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

When I see defensive ends blow by Penn and he does not lay a finger on them, it’s time for him to go. I’m not talking about, not being able to block the guy, I’m talking about NOT even laying a fingernail on him.

Maybe that’s good for some of you. Keep your head in the sand.

Penn is not the only problem on this team, but he is one of many.

  37. Eric Says:

In my opinion JOE he need to be move to RT at this point in his career how that equates to running him out of town only JOE knows!

  38. GregorySheano Says:

Still remember that bloody nose he gave Jared Allen in the Minnesota game a few years back. Penn don’t take no crap.

  39. The_Buc_Realist Says:

If the Bucs keep Penn, the best they could squeeze a comeback (which means avg) year for Penn. Maybe 2 years of average play. Then what? Then you are in the Market for a Left Tackle. The cards are lining up for a solution this year.

  40. Architek Says:

Why does noise and rumors have to motivate you to be excellent or manage your weight?

    Really – - – -

    Thanks Dominik!!!!

  41. hamilton Says:

    go get them penn.

  42. Mr. Patrick Says:

I’m much more concerned with the interior of the line than I am with the tackles.

  43. Mumbles Says:

I waiting on the report on Nicks. His status will be huge for what the Bucs need to do on the O-Line. #FingersCrossed.

  44. THETRUTH Says:

We are &17mill under cap before they moved it up. Why a re you so determined to cut everyone!!! Dude played with 6 different guards next to him last season alone !! Buc fans run everyone out of town and than cry when we have no one !! Spend what we have and when we run low than work on new contracts.

Wonder what will happen if lovie starts 0-4

  45. Mumbles Says:

Taking a page out of the Penn playbook, Bowers ought to be somewhere on a mountain working out with a Hindu monk trying to come in in pro bowl form. Gospel singing is out, blood and sweat is in! We’ll see!

  46. Chris Says:

    Joe,

I agree with some of your assessment on penn. I think he’s solid but should re-work his deal. I don’t think our pass protection was as bad as the 43 sacks it surrendered to Mike Glennon. Glennon had 4.25 seconds to pull the trigger which is in the top 12 in the league. He held on to the ball and took unnecessary sacks.

However I will say this: if we can replace penn with a younger and better player at a similar 7-8 mm per year, I’m for it.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

“Buc fans run everyone out of town ”

THETRUTH…do you REALLY believe the Glazers are listening to us or would listen for that matter?

  48. Trubucfan22 Says:

Love Donnie penn. glad to see his motivation is up. I would love to see penn anchor the online for another 5 years.

  49. SAMCRO Says:

Donald, sorry man, but the film don’t lie. You’re bad play started to come into question during the preseason. The way Freeman was under seize on just about every possession. Then it reared it’s ugly head in the first regular season game and it never got better after that, even after Glennon took over. I’m surprised after last season that MG8 didn’t get physically or even mentally injured (shell-shocked). I went back and watched several games that were close losses, and the one continuing and glaring theme I noticed the most was the crappy offensive line play.

Let me just say this, If Brady or Manning or Rodgers were the Bucs QB … You sir, would not be the LT. for long, if at all, after last year. and it would be their decision ..not the coaches. Luckily for you, and your mates Freeman was meek and to weak to demand excellence and MG8 was a 1st year rookie thrown into the fire. …and you guys almost let him get destroyed.
Somethings got to give cause salary cuts don’t make players better.

Penn, do yourself a favor and ask to move to RT or G to finish your career.

  50. THETRUTH Says:

    Buc1987.

Let me correct that , they want to run everyone out!!
Dude if we had Troy aikmen or Peyton manning here they would be asking for their heads after their first year numbers.

Revis !! Our defense would have been 33 rd rank in league without him and fans trying to get rid of him when we have tons of money available.. Yes I said 33rd cause Seahawks backups would have had better defense numbers than us. Revis leads by performance he is respected in locker room cause he is one of the BEST to every play that position !! He also played hurt and was still best on team and in league.

Complaining about Glennon , guy had one receiver and a fourth string RB , not saying he is answer but WE DONT KNOW .. NFL experts like the kid , buc fans want Aaron MURRY cause he is hometown boy, Danny W. Had good numbers in SEC and Kerwin BELL, sec numbers don’t guarantee Good NFL QB.

  51. Mumbles Says:

    Buc1987,

Nobody in an insane asylum is going to admit they’re crazy! We’re talking to each other up in here. That’s as far as it goes. If you say something crazy, the rest of the inmates will respond. But nobody on the outside hears us. Lol.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

THETRUTH…patience has already worn thin with Buc fans. As far as Penn goes, a NINE year vet ain’t no spring chicken. So there is no waiting around for Penn. Trubucfan22…. 5 more years? Are you for real?

Patience has worn thin with Buc fans. You can blame the Glazers for that.

That’s right Joe I said it!

  53. Buc1987 Says:

Well Mumbles….some people are convinced us fans run players out of town.

  54. PRBucFan Says:

Glennon is a liability until he proves that he has elevated every other aspect of his game to compensate for his inability to escape pressure.

Good kid and if he had all the time in the world he would excel as a QB in the NFL.

Problem is, that is just not reality.
Who knows maybe he figures out a way to compensate for that major flaw.

    I don’t see it happening.

  55. Mumbles Says:

Myth! Go back in the archives and look at the JBF posts on McCoy during the time Thomas 2.2 was living large. Now look at McCoy pro bowler modeling the new Buc unis. Players run themselves out of town. Posters run their mouths!

  56. Cobraboy Says:

I never end to be amazed how anyone who understands the football psych game would ever, EVER believe ANYTHING a coach or GM says between the end of the season & end of the draft regarding players, player evaluation or how they intend to build their roster.

It’s all disinformation & liars poker.

LT is not a problem spot for the OL. Nor is RT. But the interior like, G & C? That is where problems lie. Two hurt G’s and a C playing out of position? Think that could cause offensive problems?

  57. WalkdaPlank Says:

The day LT is our biggest need is the day the Bucs are Super Bowl Champions in those new uniforms. Lol but that doesn’t mean it’s not still a problem. LG is a bigger need IMO with the way Nicks turned out. But Penn has to play better. So does Joseph. The Bucs were last in offense for plenty of reasons other than Glennon. And the O-line was one of em.

  58. Greg Dyer Says:

My immediate take from Penn’s photo was the body! Yes, a baggy workout shirt but NO major bulge from the midsection! Wow! from my eyes a major transformation! The weight he was pressing in that shot doesn’t mean a thing! The man is stronger than any person reading this! No one can say he has not demonstrated amazing athletic abilities from within his previous physic. It appears to me he has working on a transformation! Good for him and the Bucs!

  59. Capt. Tim Says:

Again, those of you who are bad mouthing One of the all time great Bucs aren’t Fans- or intelligent.
Hard to imagine how sad some of your lives must be.

Penn should be allowed to go to a real team. This one will take a few years. Rookie( or first year) QBs take a while to adjust.
Plus this team really Needs alot of talent .

Our QB needs a LT to grow with him, and reach their peak around the same time. LT is that Critical to an offense.

Trade Penn. the vast majority of Football people are smarter than the haters here( not hard to top them! Many vegetables could!). Trade him to a contender, get a draft pick or two.

He’ll have the last laugh! And he deserves it! Heck of a player, and a Buccaneer thru and Thru.

  60. MadMax Says:

Buc1987 feeling it as well as I….and some others :D

Need Lewan if Mack, Matthews and Robinson are gone….and we could probably trade back a few spots and still land him

  61. scubog Says:

With the collection of journeyman LG’s at his side, a scarecrow playing QB behind him and a coaching staff in which the players had lost confidence; it’s a wonder Donald played as well as he did. Yes, we all saw the times at the end of the season when the DE seemed to zip right past him on the way to the immovable object wearing jersey # 8. But Penn is a prideful man who deserves a chance this off season to get back to the player he was a few seasons ago. I’d like to see him move to RT or inside to guard if his once nimble feet have left him. We here in Tampa Bay do always seem to want a whipping boy…………or two.

  62. phil Says:

Donald Penn is not the problem with the Bucs. He’s a very good left tackle in the NFL and we are lucky to have him. I also think Joseph will be better this year. The Bucs could use a lot of things in the draft but left tackle and right guard aren’t one of them.

  63. Brandon Says:

That’s great that he’s motivated, it’s too bad it’s only coming now when he’s ready to be run out of town on a rail by less than knowledgeable fans who think sacks are entirely the product of the fat men’s weight and has nothing to do with the doe-eyed QB holding onto the ball way too long.

  64. DooleyMane Says:

I’m all or competition, but the notion that there’s a ready made replacement for Donald Penn walking around is ridiculous. I hope the big fella comes out as strong and loud as ever, besides the biggest weakness on our OL last season wasn’t Penn or Dotson, it was the replacement(s) for Carl Nicks and a recouperating Davin Joesph

  65. Cobraboy Says:

Anyone who has played football understands that a bad coach creates bad playing.

Schiano lost the lockerroom way back. Why is it so surprising that players performed badly as a result. If players-even as a pro-play to their top level even when coaches are bad, why does coaching matter?

  66. buc4lyfe Says:

The team sucked last year it wasn’t just the o line it was the entire team. Everyone should get a Mulligan for having to deal with a pathetic college coach in the pros, it’s gone to cut Penn if your drafting a left tackle but it wouldn’t make since to go out and get another expensive player in free agency, those guys are available for a reason because teams don’t left go of franchise left tackles do why cut one and sign another not much better and pay him what you’d pay Donald Penn anyway, that’s a waste if for no other reason Donald Penn is a leader on this team

  67. BoJim Says:

I think Penn and Davin will have a good year under Lovie and staff.

  68. Miguel Grande Says:

“But Penn is a prideful man who deserves a chance this off season to get back to the player he was a few seasons ago.”

The main problem was quite simply stated by Penn himself, “thank u 4 the motivation workout#1 done workout#2 later.”

I’m 60 years old, retired and on workout #48 this year. Darrel Revis, workout #62.
