No More Byrds For Bucs

March 3rd, 2014

hawkDo the Bucs need another big-name safety?

The esteemed fight-instigatingbarista-training, pedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïve,baseball box score-reading Peter King, of NBC Sports and Sports Illustrated fame, sure thinks so.

6. I think if I’m guessing where Jairus Byrd lands—assuming he’s not tagged by the Bills—I’m guessing Tampa Bay. His dad, Gil Byrd, is an assistant coach in the secondary for the Bucs. Not many instances of father coaching son in NFL history.

This is quite a head-scratcher.

Dashon Goldson is one of the few Buccaneers with a guaranteed paycheck for 2014. He’s not going anywhere. And neither is third-year safety Mark Barron, who, hopefully, will have the breakout year Bucs fans have been waiting for since he was drafted with the No. 7 overall pick in 2012.

Does King not realize this, or that Byrd may have already turned down $10 million a year from Buffalo?

Perhaps King is unaware that Lovie Smith is not Greg Schiano. Lovie absolutely will not build the Bucs defense from the back to the front.

I don’t think the Buc’s ever intended to build there defense from the back to the front. They invested premium draft picks to the defensive front. None of those draft picks panned out. The secondary needed fixing so, instead they fixed it through over priced free agents rather than premium draft picks.

  2. Meh Says:

We may have to pay Goldson, but he’s probably going to be suspended for half the season.

I still don’t think we’re going after Byrd, but if we do you can bank on us cutting Goldson after this season when there’s no more guaranteed cash left on his contract.

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We do need another safety, because Goldson will be suspended.

  4. bwf921 Says:

If we can afford him sign him. Dashon is 3 flags away from a year long suspension.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s almost worth having the dead money because Goldson is going to hurt this team more than help it.

We do need another safety, because Goldson will be suspended **if he does not change his ways and gets another personal fould**

    There fixed it for you.

  7. Thibs5599 Says:

Goldson is on record saying he needs to change his way of play IOT avoid fines and suspensions. I think with the help of Lovie, Frazier, and Gil Byrd Goldson will do just that. Will he get flagged during the season I am sure he will. However I don’t think it will be nearly what he got last year. He is a leader and wants to play football and is smart enough to know he can’t do that from the bench. Congratulations Goodell you have won the battle and made an example of Goldson.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Meh

If Goldson is suspended….I don’t think we have to pay….he loses his salary for the games he is suspended.

  9. SAMCRO Says:

Unless Byrd gives the Bucs a huge discount, and they trade or release some big veteran salaries, I don’t foresee this happening. This off season is about the guys in the trenches both sides of the ball, and WR. If Lovie and the gang deviate from that script, they will struggle like last year. Our offensive line was atrocious, and our defensive line was over-matched most the time.

If the Bucs are going to commit another $10 million for one player, it will be on a pass rusher.

  10. SAMCRO Says:

Plus Keith Tandy played well as Goldson’s backup, and is a heck of a lot more affordable.

  11. biff barker Says:

It’s that time of year folks.

  12. Phillip Says:

    @TBBF

His contract still counts toward the cap though..

  13. joseph mamma Says:

We need a safety who is great at covering and neither of our guy’s fit the bill. That was a terrible oversight by our last, piss poor, GM.

  14. BirdDoggers Says:

The team needs a true Free Safety. Both Goldson and Barron can be a liability in coverage. They’re very similar players, which is why it didn’t make sense to sign Goldson to a big contract in the first place.

“if he does not change his ways and gets another personal foul”

He has already stated several times that he will not change. Period.

“Goldson is on record saying he needs to change his way of play IOT avoid fines and suspensions.”

No he isn’t. In fact, he has stated “on record” that he plays only one way and he isn’t changing. If you saw what you suggest, please, give us the source and quote.

  17. INDYbucsfan Says:

I know no one agrees but I think it would be cool to use goldson as another outside linebacker. Then we can sign Byrd. But then again I disagree with signing byrd altogether.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As to the offensive line, they were now healthy last year so they barely played the starters as a full unit. So really, it is had to judge the entire line. Nicks hardly played. Joseph got injured. The depth for both were horrible. RT was none existent.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “not healthy” I meant

Lovie will build the team around the Amazing talents of our young franchise qb mike glennon.

  21. Snook Says:

Here’s how he came to this:

DERRRR Byrd’s dad coaches on the Bucs now. DERRRRR Byrd plays football. DERRRR Byrd is going to Tampa. DERRRRRR

  22. bucsQcCity Says:

How about getting creative with Goldson and sign a true FS? Goldson is a heatseeking missile and when he plays 15 yards from LOS he gets into trouble now in the new NFL flag football league. Put him in the Strong LB spot where he can unleash its shots the the OL and RB instead of defenseless WRs in the middle of the field.

  23. thegregwitul Says:

The only way this happens is if Goldson is traded, and I doubt that that happens based on his contract. Look, I live in Buffalo and have watched my fair share of Bills games; Jarius Byrd is the truth. If he’s not the best safety in the NFL, he’s in the top-2. I’d take him over Goldson in a heartbeat, but the Bills look unlikely to tag Byrd, which would negate a possible swap for Goldson.

At the end of the day, I see Byrd either resigning with Buffalo (not likely if he’s not tagged), signing with either Cleveland or Philly or a team coming out of nowhere with a sweet deal. I don’t think that team will be the Bucs, they have other holes to fill on the defensive line first before considering a safety, even if that safety is the best in the NFL.

  24. Macabee Says:

If the Bucs believe that Goldson is one more penalty away from a longer suspension and don’t believe he can easily adjust to the new rules, they will want to trade him and probably to the SF 49ers.

The 49ers have 12 picks including a 3rd comp pick for losing Goldson. They have 3 3rd round picks. They still like Goldson as he visited on-site with them during his suspension last year. They are going to lose SS Donte Whitner in FA. Goldson is bigger than Whitner, played SS for the Bucs and has flourished in the SF defense.

The Bucs could trade him net net to get Jairus Byrd with little impact on cap space. The 49ers would take on essentially a one year contract at 9mil and re-do his contract going forward or cut him outright if he is not the same Goldson. For a team on the cusp of the SB, they will take that offer and the Bucs could accept whatever they offer and be better off if they can get Byrd.

Bryd wants out of Buffalo and they can’t pay him enough to stay. That is why they have decided not to franchise him. 9mil that we were going to pay Goldson will get Byrd in FLA with no income tax and great weather!

  25. bucsQcCity Says:

    @Macabee

Hope Licht has the same idea!

  26. bigpoppabuc Says:

Exactly, Joseph mamma. I don’t expect Byrd in Tampa, barring a trade of Goldson.

  27. SAMCRO Says:

    @Macabee

    nice scenario

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I agree with Joe Momma here.
Our “Rockstar” former GM was responsible for Schiano having to build the defense like he did.
Dominik’s picks for our D Line were incapable of getting any pressure, and forced Sheridan and Schiano into resorting to all kinds of stunts.
Dominik allowed our best pass rusher to leave for Seattle, in favor of his Guy Bowers, who is more adept at packing a gun at airports, then he is at pass rushing.

  29. Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

    capo,
Our franchise qb is still playing at FSU this next season and might want to play baseball.

    Jameis,
Please come to Tampa Mr. Winston and get us over the hill, forget baseball it’s for athletes who can’t play football.

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

I don’t see it. You can never have enough depth but the Bucs have Tandy and two solid starters(regardless of one’s head-hunting rep).
I actually LOVE the way Goldson plays. We’re pissing and moaning because he was suspended a few times but anyone who watched those plays can say that there were a few “iffy” calls. Compare it to the previous season where no one hit. I’d rather see that than powder-puff football. Bring back the days when offensive players feared the Bucs D.
    Any thoughts on the uniform?

  31. pick6 Says:

goldson and barron are just too similar. i’m sure our new HC will have better ideas on how to use both at the same time, but i would love to see us recoup a couple mid-rounders for goldson and get a better coverage complement to Barron. goldson seems like a leader and a strong teammate off the field, but from an on the field perspective the deal always had me scratching my head.

  32. Barry Says:

At least our QB position issue. MG8 2014.

  33. Que589 Says:

    Excellent trade for both teams:

    Goldson for Orakpo

Then acquire Byrd in free agency.

  34. Dougy balls Says:

Could trade Barron and move dashon to ss sign Byrd

  35. Dougy balls Says:

Or trade dashon and free up cap All that what cost was up front signing bonus. Any thoughts joe. ?
