Ugly Number For Mike Glennon

March 3rd, 2014

T

Yes, “this Joe” got burned out talking about Mike Glennon. It’s clear from comments made by Bucs coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht that they are intent on securing competition for Glennon. If he wins the competition, then more power to the guy.

Joe understands this. While Glennon showed glimpses of good last season and may have been forced into an ugly pickle, at the end of the day he still quarterbacked the worst offense in the NFL.

But Joe came across an equally ugly number of Glennon’s.

In the long run this statistic may not mean squat, but on the surface it is troubling. Since the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine, quarterbacks’ passes are clocked by radar guns. Glennon was recorded throwing 50 mph.

So? Since when are NFL quarterbacks are judged like MLB pitchers on velocity of their fastballs? But, per Ourlands, no quarterback they have recorded throwing 50 mph or slower has done anything but torment NFL fans.

You can monitor the results via the link above, but here is the motley list of quarterbacks who also recorded combine-passing velocity at 50 mph or slower: Connor Shaw, Aaron Corp, Ricky Stanzi, Tyrod Taylor, Jarrett Brown, John Skelton, Dan LeFevour, Tony Pike, Armanti Edwards, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and Colt Brennan.

If Glennon does win the starting job this summer and continues to put up pedestrian numbers, then this is a statistic to keep in mind.

Accuracy is way more important than velocity, heck there are several QB’s not known for their “fastball” that have had success in the NFL, and his intermediate passes always had some zip, and he’s shown to be able to throw the deep ball too. I watched Steve Young for years, who while very talented, never was blessed with a howitzer. I’m still on the fence with Glennon, but if he doesn’t make it in this league, I doubt very seriously it will be because he threw a 50mph pass at his combine, non story imo.

The Bull, Brad Johnson didn’t possess a cannon either. His accuracy was the one reason we can still taunt the Falcons and Eagles fans over their empty trophy case.
Bring in the competition for Glennon and let it play out.

Here is an unbiased opinion of Glennon with alot of research:

Saw that site too. The high velocity guys were very underwhelming .

It would be nice to know which Joe is writing articles, Steve or Lee ?
Glennon throws a nice ball with a good arc that makes it easy to catch.
Unless we draft a QB high in this draft, or get really lucky with a QB in the later rounds, I think he will still be starting in Tampa, on opening day.

The moral of this story is, only use useless stats when they conveniently make your argument.

    figures!

  10. Bucfan#37 Says:

Glennon will give his all while competing for the starter spot, that is a given. I was satisfied with his passing ability considering who he had to throw to and his OL protection. Get some receivers able to get open and give the QB time to throw, problem solved.

NOT TRUE. They go hand-in-hand. It does no good to be accurate if the ball doesn’t get there at the right time on long passes.

This is probably why his deep passing game sucks overall. The WRs and CBs are too fast for him (and we consider them slow!).

Actually, Glennon lacks in many things, but his pocket mobility is really bad. Making the oline compensate leads to holding penalties. I’m not saying the oline was blameless, just that there were plenty of instances where Mike Glennon would have had more time if he had just taken one step in the right direction.

He’s doing nothing to help the oline.

And rarely were there not WRs open last year. There was almost always either a target somewhere or room to scramble.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he can’t develop those things…I’m just saying the MGM tends to blame everything on everyone else, and Glennon did plenty of things badly.

It was his rookie year, so that is to be expected. But he CERTAINLY did not earn a starting role. I doubt he will be the starter this year unless he takes a huge leap.

  13. Bucfever40 Says:

@Bonzai, I agree that the ball has to travel to the receiver in a timely fashion, I just don’t think he lacks in that department, Glennon seems to have a lively arm with a good spiral, I’ve seen him throw some bullets that cut through the air pretty quick. Again, I’m not a Glennon mobster, but if he’s “capable”, then I’m all for giving him a chance, and let him compete with whomever they decide to draft or bring in, bottom line-we ALL want a winner here.

@Bill T- good read. To bad we cant find more of those type of “non-biased in-depth” reporting here. As a Buc fan, I find it disgraceful how far this site has gone to ‘attack’ Glennon.
