Down On Glennon, Johnny Football

February 24th, 2014

Calling Mike Glennon possibly the worst in-the-pocket mover in the NFL, former Bucs guard Ian Beckles said today on WDAE-AM 620 he’s very down on the Bucs’ signal caller and is not surprised Lovie Smith and Jason Licht have failed to endorse Glennon as the 2014 starter — in words or implication.

“It’s to the point where when you’re looking at it breaking it down … and you think to yourself, ‘if you’re going to have a quarterback that doesn’t understand the game, man, make him a great athlete.’ And we have a guy that doesn’t understand the game. You might try to make him a classic pocket passer, but they don’t even exist anymore,” Beckles said of Glennon.

Glennon’s 40 sacks in 13 starts was the second-worst, per-game ratio in the NFL last season. That troubles Beckles deeply. And he’d rather see polished retreads like Josh McCown, Matt Cassel or Matt Schaub under center for the Bucs for the next year or two, if Tampa Bay can’t find what it wants in the NFL Draft.

“I don’t want to sit and wait to watch Mike Glennon develop into a below-average quarterback. I don’t want to watch that,” Beckles said. “He was a third-round pick for a reason. And we were the 32nd-ranked offense for a reason.

“In the pocket, I don’t know if [there’s] anybody worse in the pocket.  As a lineman, giving up sacks has a lot to do with getting beat in front but it has a lot to do with the feel of the quarterback, too. … Glennon just fades and gets sacked. As I lineman it drives me crazy.”

Beckles went on to explain that Johnny Football is no solution because he’s another Robert Griffin, III, someone whose style of can’t physically withstand the rigors of the NFL.

Regular readers here already know Joe’s long-standing position on Glennon, which is similar to the Buccaneers’ current public stance: Glennon didn’t do nearly enough to keep the Bucs from hotly pursuing an alternative.

The free agency bell rings in exactly 15 days. The NFL will quickly find out what the Bucs’ brass truly thinks of Glennon.

Offense defense now we’re here to say, make Mike Glennon walk the plank, throw him in Tampa Bay !!!!!! Hey

  2. d-money Says:

I love the Ron and Ian show but Ian’s evaluations carry little to no weight with me.

He is a hater and never has a positive word to say about any player.

  3. ROBERT6 Says:

doesn’t understand the game? he looked to have better understanding in 10 minutes than free did in 5 years.

just fades back and gets sacked? how about jailbreak before the ball gets to him.

everyone has to make a name for themselves..he just did. a$$……….

  4. knucknbuc Says:

    Get your popcorn ready…..

  5. stevek (MGM) Says:

Glennon emerges at a Solid Starting NFL QB this year, calling it, for the Bucs.

Ian should be getting our our EXPENSIVE and hurt offensive guards.

We should not sit around and wait 5 years, as we wasted with Free, but we need to see what Mike Glennon has beyond just 13 games.

How much better does Glennon get from year 1 to 2?

Mayock and Cosell like Glennon, along with other analysts. Give the kid a chance, and look at the bright side at least we didn’t give Freeman 100 million+ for NOTHING.

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Ian was very down on McCoy. look how that turned out.

  7. lightningbuc Says:

I remember those commercials from 20 years or so ago – “When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen”.

When Ian Beckles talks, people don’t listen.

  8. SpanishBuc Says:

“You might try to make him a classic pocket passer, but they don’t even exist anymore,” Beckles said of Glennon.

Really?!? Don’t exist anymore?!? IMO there are 4 elite QB’s. Manning, Brees, Brady (had an off year, but look at the team he had), and Rodgers. 3 of them are 100% pocket passers. what an idiotic take.

Just because Beckles doesn’t like Glennon, doesn’t mean he should make up lies. This guy has no class.

  9. Joe Dunn Says:

And the total influence Ian and all of US have on Lovie’s view of Glennon’s future is Z E R O . . . .

    Take a deep breath, people.

You are all acting like the Chris Farley “Motivational Guy” character.

  10. ROBERT6 Says:

jd. you don’t know that. I spoke with lovie this morning

  11. dee Says:

Thats the oc job is to put the players in position to make plays sick of hearing about what players cant do and can do.

  12. SAMCRO Says:

Like I said before, It’s the same usual suspects.

  13. Pewter_Power Says:

Beckles is a tool, always as been and always will be. Glennon looked a lot better than “athletic” quarterbacks like Geno Smith and EJ Manuel. For him to say the classic drop back quarterback doesn’t exist anymore is also moronic. I don’t care how fast you can run the 40 in, you jave to at some point be able to stand in the pocket, read a defense and make accurate passes down the field. That’s why RG3 came crashing back down to Earth and Volin Kaepernick struggled.

  14. DavidM Says:

LOL Ian was down on Bucs playoff chances when we won the super bowl! Still luv him though. But kinda of a Debbie Downer

  15. eric Says:

LOL Ian Beckles remember what LT said about him ask him if he believe it, the truth of the matter is this team has holes everywhere including LT, LG, C, RG, RT, BTE, WR not name Mike Williams Vincent Jackson, I would like to see one QB in the league flourish under this condition. Trade the pick to get more and rebuild this team the right way we have some guys but we need many many more!

  16. Craig Trigueiro Says:

Mr Beckles with the lousy substandard line play what did you want from a rookie? He had better progression than Josh. Unlike Freeman he did not have that deer in the head lights look

  17. bucray1 Says:

ian beckles is an ass-clown.just ask the police officer in ybor whose horse ian tried to commandeer.God forbid he should blame his bretheren offensive lineman that played like crap. a terrible o-line can take the career of a qb just as much as int’s and incompletions.( see david carr) that being said , I would not be opposed to drafting one of the more mobile qb’s (yes, even johnny football ) and let the competition begin. we will get a better sense of which style works better for our team and may the best man win.

  18. Cody Says:

Glennons not flashy that’s for sure…but he isnt the worst rookie QB I’ve seen either…He had to throw way to much last season for 1 due to our inability to run the ball last season…top that of with having only a banged up VJax and a rookie TE to throw too; not to mention putrid play all season long from the O-line…that’s what I saw last season…Under the circumstances I thought Glennon played slightly better than a rookie; he toke his lumps last season and should be better in 2014 with improved coaching/supporting cast…

Im keeping my finger crossed for Sammy Watkins to be available at 7…When it comes to Sammy Watkins all you need to do is put the tape on….Dude does it all; he has heart, his hands are ridiculous, he’s a yac/take it to the house type of receiver, he can line up inside, outside, in the backfield, and he can return kicks…This kid is a football player; probably could play defense if someone asked him too…Imo he’s the best player in this draft; Id take #1 overall…

  19. Barry Says:

Greg Cosell piece put Joe in his place and was a positive for MG8. And Ave Joe would have none of it. Straight to the ole keyboard, find a MG8 hit piece, and hit Enter. Done.

  20. Bob Digital Says:

Why do people cry everyday that Joe beats up in Glennon? MG8 was the qb in the LAST RANKED offense. Stop getting so butt-hurt when Joe points out the obvious.

  21. johnny Says:

Earlier last season he said Foles was a terrible QB and only had Good games vs the Bucs ..Well end of year Foles was the Highest rated Qb in the year and went to the pro bowl ..Ian should stick to evaluating lineman .

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“You might try to make him a classic pocket passer, but they don’t even exist anymore,” Beckles said of Glennon.”

Don’t exist??? Two Mannings, Brees…I guess those are figments.

  23. Tourman Says:

d-money, way up top, made a comment about Ian Beckles and he is right on the money (pun intended). “Bacon” has an axe to grind about certain people (see Jon Gruden) and objectivity goes right out the window. C’mon fat boy, let’s get real!!

  24. Tourman Says:

d-money, way up top, made a comment about Ian Beckles and he is right on the money (pun intended). “Bacon” has an axe to grind about certain people (see Jon Gruden) and objectivity goes right out the window.

  25. joseph mamma Says:

How would Beckles know how much Glennon understands the game? I’d put this guy’s opinion right up there with Shaun King. “Drop back passer’s don’t exist anymore” has got to be the most intelligent comment ever uttered.

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Barry Says
“Greg Cosell piece put Joe in his place and was a positive for MG8. And Ave Joe would have none of it. Straight to the ole keyboard, find a MG8 hit piece, and hit Enter. Done.”

Funny thing. Joe published that story you mentioned without adding anything negative at the end. You MGMers get what you want and you still whine.

Frankly, I think that’s low class.

BTW, Joe is just bringing the comments that other people have made. If you don’t like it there is an easy solution.

I have never seen a group of people whine so much as the Mike Glennon supporters. Astounding.

  27. rayjay1122 Says:

I feel bad for all of last year’s rookies since they were not coached to have success. IMO the lack of solid coaching had a lot to do with Glennon’s deficiencies. We had lame game plans and philosophies. Glennon may not ever be a franchise QB but with some actual solid coaching maybe he can compete for at least the #2 QB spot. I have seen better QB’S as well as worse not including Freeman who may rival the throwing Samoan as the worst QB in Bucs history. I am giving the new staff the benefit of the doubt that they will get the best guy for the job. Beckles needs to stick with the offensive line and quit trying to be an expert on other positions.

  28. Harry Says:

Just who does this Beckles guy think he is to criticize MG8? So what if he played in the NFL. He did not play QB, so he knows nothing. Yeah, Cosell did not play QB either, nor did he play in the NFL, but he said nice things about Mikey, so he is smarter!!! Go Mikey!! Go Mikey!!

  29. Bucfan#37 Says:

I’ve listened to Beckles… briefly. His voice and delivery rankles my ears and senses. Is’nt that the show that tries to guess celebrities ages. How novel. He may be right, he might be crazy.

  30. Brock Says:

Da Bucs have been looking for a franchise QB since the beginning of time, I think it’s time we develop one & quit complaining b/c we don’t have one. No such thing as a QB Tree that u can just pick what u want. MG8 had a decent rookie year better than other rookie QB’s that played all year. He can make every throw, he’s smart, wants to be great, let him develop & see what happens. Play to his strengths & coach him on his weaknesses.

  31. stanglassman Says:

Robert, Do you want fries with that? Doesn’t count as giving your advice to Lovie on the starting QB. JK

  32. Dougy balls Says:

Like buc realist said. Same idiot who says McCoy was average . Ate a big pile of crow on that . And it’s funny to here an average o lineman talk about where Glennon was drafted . Hey Ian where were you drafted . Douche bag

  33. rayjay1122 Says:

I can’t wait for the free agency to begin. We will know so much more about the direction of the Draft after that. I am all for drafting a franchise QB in the first round if one is available when we pick. I wouldn’t give up too much to try to move up though. I do not think that the teams ahead of us who need QB’S will trade down, so we would probably have to try to get the Ram’s #2 pick to get the QB we want since they have 2 picks in the first round. That is selling the farm though. I don’t think I would do that if I were calling the shots.

  34. Dougy balls Says:

Oh ya Ian drafted 5 round

  35. Owlykat Says:

I would take the Jet’s rookie QB to Glennon any day. Their Rookie beat our Defense this year by running the football and setting up the field goal in our first game. Can anybody tell me truthfully that Turtle Glennon could have made that run with the game on the line? You know he couldn’t because he has zero escapability, and you can’t blame that on our OL. Secondly, go back and look at Glennon in the fourth quarter where inexplicably he collapses and chokes under pressure almost every time. Get real!

I can’t stand listening to Ian. I used too but now that there are other clearer options on FM that are a little more open minded and realistic I am glad to say I haven’t had to hear his voice for some time now.

I think ANYBODY that is opposed to at least seeing what Mike Glennon has going into his second year is out of they’re mind. I don’t see the buds using the No. 7 on a QB. Just don’t see it happening.

  38. Sammy Watkins Mob Says:

    SAMMY WATKINS

  39. Luther Says:

I’m all for drafting a QB if it’s the right guy but one thing I know, I don’t want Ian telling me his opinion on players. The guy always has an ax to grind like he was an all-pro. Not saying he shouldn’t have an opinion but man I hate listening to him talk personnel.

  40. Dougy balls Says:

My first comment is waiting moderation would explain but was referencing Ian saying Glennon was a third round pick for a reason

  44. ElioT Says:

    Ian is an expert remember?

    Gerald McCoy the bust!

Who even listens to that horrible excuse for a radio show?

    Go Bucs!

  45. knucknbuc Says:

Joe don’t say anything remotely bad about glennon. He was awesome last year it was everyone around him that sucked. (Sarcasm)…I guess mgm’s only want you to show how awesome glennon was last year in leading the crappiest offense in the league.

  46. SteveK (MGM) Says:

    Bob Digital,

Exactly! Glennon had the worst offensive unit in football around him.

Our OLine is the laughingstock of the NFC South.

How do you expect to compete with the worst OLinee in the division?

Glennon is more a part of our solution, then he is the problem.

The world is finna be shocked by Glennon.

Joe- Glennon will be the “best QB” ever for the Bucs. Better than your boy , Freeman aka “Franchise”.

  47. Dougy balls Says:

@ Ander simple solution stay out of the comment section until August

I like Glennon….. I dont predict he will become Drew Bledsoe, Dan Marino, Joe Namath or any of a dozen other GREAT QBs, but for God’s sakes…..his ROOKIE season was not AWFUL.

He also did NOT get all cocky and tell the NFL to draft his butt in the first round either…..

I predict if the RIGHT QB THEY WANT is available, BUcs pull the trigger in draft, but they do not draft one just to compete with him.

Another idea – – how about we get Shawn “the expert” King to give him 30-40 pounds and they are BOTH better off.

Glennon was not first round material; he wasn’t even 3rd round material, either

  61. Buc1987 Says:

BucsFan68..yet Glennon had a MUCH better season stats wise than first rounder Manuel and 2nd rounder Geno Smith.

I also remember a few draft analysts that had him graded as a 3rd rounder. So I don’t know what your talking about.

  62. jbskiff Says:

Ian cant tell you anything about quarterbacks, because all he can tell you about is what he saw through his arse. His major comments are about racks, him being the mayor of south Tampa and how old people are (B’day challenge). Congratulations Joe your venom is spreading. You and sd keep drumming your drum and dissing the MG8 supporters and maybe Lovey will be bullied into cutting MG8. After all he can see very plainly what a carefully orchestrated anti campaign in against a coach can accomplish. If you don’t believe me just ask dungey, chucky and shiano. Yes, it is time MG8 supporters to stand up against the demeaning remarks and show support for the man.. Bet you anti-Glennon mob (oh that’s right only you can use that word) don’t have the balls to say your anti-Glennon remarks to his face!

Ian should be the poster child for” post career concusive Trama syndrome”!

Two many head shots/ concussions. Sorry buddy!

Not a Glennon mobster. But think Glennon showed a few “glimmers” last year. Feel he deserves a chance to win the job. But know we need to bring in competition. If the Glennon mob doesn’t want competition, then it means they think they are betting on a dead horse.
Don’t think most of them are afraid of competition.

Ian, like many of the local ” sport reporters” are more interested in Controversy, than honest opinions

Both the Bucs roster, and the local sports reporters, could use a massive upgrade in talent!
At least we have Joe! Thank The Lord!

  65. JP4 Says:

Beckles is a genius. He’s right. Tom Brady is not a pocket passer. Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Luck, Brees, Dalton, Smith, Rapelsburger, Manning, Manning2, Carson, Foles, Cutler, Tannehill, Rogers, Bradford. None of these guys are pocket QBs. They all just run around all game like Michael Vick being chased by a pit bull. Joe Flacco is the last pocket passer I can even think of who won a Super Bowl…and that was…at least about…13 months ago!

  66. BuccoBill Says:

If Beckles doesn’t like him then he must be a future success! This is the same yahoo that held the opinion that GMC was a bust and would never play the game at an elite level because he wasn’t angry enough and he wore glasses. Yeah, not holding much faith in Ian Beckles’ opinion on the matter!
