Pat Kirwan Talks To Joe

Pat Kirwan

Yes, Joe is still bouncing around Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis trying to interview as many people as he can at the NFL Scouting Combine. One big fish Joe landed is none other than Pat Kirwan.

If you are not familiar with Kirwan, let Joe help. A former Bucs scout, Kirwan was pro personnel director of the Jets and once upon a time was an assistant linebackers coach who answered to some defensive guy by the name of Monte Kiffin.

Kirwan currently works for CBS Sports and his greatest claim to fame is co-hosting perhaps the most football intellectual show there is, “Moving the Chains,” with Jim Miller heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Of course, Kiwan talked Bucs and if he was Bucs general manager Jason Licht, he’d go after a certain quarterback locals may know about.

JoeBucsFan: Khalil Mack. Mike Mayock absolutely loves the guy. Says he would take him over Jadeveon Clowney. Are you as high on Mack as Mayock is?

Pat Kirwan: We just shared some time with him. I couldn’t be more impressed. He’s a guy who has a story to tell how he landed in Buffalo. He had two high school teammates who were offered full rides to major colleges and no one offered him. And now he is sitting here as this guy who could be an outstanding first round draft pick and I think he is a lock to be great.

Joe: It’s kind of a hurdle to leapfrog at least two teams in your division for a chance at a Wild Card when you have the No. 4 quarterback in the division. Hiring Lovie Smith, him being a defensive guy, you think they may just revert to the Bucs of old since they have so many pieces in place on their defense and try to win games with a running game and a stout defense?

Kirwan: Everyone wants to model themselves after Seattle now.

Joe: Problem is, the Bucs don’t have Russell Wilson.

Kirwan: No, they have Mike Glennon and they are probably going to pick another quarterback. Do I think they take one in the first round? No. But I think they can find someone interesting like the kid out of Georgia, in the fourth round. I love the guy. I love the guy. You get that guy into your program, and he’s the right kind of guy to put into there.

Joe: What do you think about this Jimmy Garoppolo kid out of Eastern Illinois?

Kirwan: I had him at the Senior Bowl. Thought he had an average week of practice but when the game came, which Jimmy [Miller] and I hang around to do the game, he rose up to another level in the game conditions. I was impressed with that. It’s the same thing that happened to him in the [Shrine Game]. He is another guy I wouldn’t [draft] early. Fourth round, somewhere in there, late third. That would be it. But I would take the [Aaron] Murray kid first.

Just can’t see the Bucs drafting a QB in the third or fourth to compete with Glennon who is…catch this…A THIRD ROUND FREAKING DRAFT PICK HIMSELF! If they want a draft pick who has the greatest shot of outplaying Glennon and starting they need to draft a QB in rounds 1 or 2. Simple as that. You don’t draft a third or fourth rounder to come in and take the job from your ALREADY EXISTING THIRD ROUNDER. Damn, people.

  2. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @FLBOYindallas

Kirwan is just saying, you don’t give up the farm for a guy that is just barely better than MG8.

  3. Orca Says:

Once again, Joe pimping his asinine “4th best QB in the division” idiocy.

  4. bucray1 Says:

stopped reading after garbage about “4th best qb in division”.leading questions get results you want. we get it already. question: what nfc qb would change that outside of Rodgers ?

Dear Clueless reader, Joe doesn’t put words in anyone’s mouth. There are no “results” sought. Joe asks a clear question and the analyst answers candidly. Joe has gotten numerous answers to the question. –Joe

  5. Dougy balls Says:

What does it matter what round you take a QB . Teams reach in the first all the time for third round talent . Take a guy in the first or second and he is the guy ? R Wilson 3 rd. Brady 6 th A Murray minus an injury would go second round if not late first all day. Kirwan is right on with this take Flyboy in Dallas has drank the jerry koolaid # tonyromoundrafted

  6. Arealbucsfan Says:

Garoppolo is better than Murray though……

  7. Brandon Says:

Not big on Aaron Murray. Too many jump balls when he gets in trouble, decent athlete but very average arm, runs okay but is coming off torn ACL and very short. He’s a competitor but his long range NFL prospects fall more in line with Eric Zeier rather than Drew Brees.

  8. Mr. Patrick Says:

You don’t have to have the best QB in the division to win the division. You have to have the best team

  9. Sammy Watkins Mob Says:

    ^Exactly

  10. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I have gone round and round with Joe about leading questions on interviews. For someone in “Journalism” that is in the first couple of lessons. That asking a negative question means you are looking for a negative response. Kirwan is a pro though and I doubt that Joe’s leading question would effect his answers.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Mr Patrick ….well said. Take that Joe.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Wasn’t it Kirwan that said he could tell that the players didn’t like Schiano all that much, because when they got their first win this season, the players did not douse him with Gatorade? I think it was him.

That had to be the dumbest thing I have ever read from a national analyst.

So take his analysis with a grain of whatever.

Joe you should have asked him about that moronic statement.

  13. SAMCRO Says:

Listen guys, Joe knows what he’s doing. He’s no dummy! I mean how else do you increase your chances for a more desired answer.

  14. BuccoDav Says:

People, RELAX! “Joe” is not a journalist, “Joe” is a blogger. He does not need to adhere to journalistic “ethics” as we believe should exist. He can (and has proven time and again that he will) ask any leading question he believes will promote his agenda, or incite readers to react to what is written. He pushes the “Johnny Love” or “Glennon hate bias” because commenters react to it. I admit it makes for entertaining reading, but I think I will pursue true journalism on other sites, but return here for the entertainment value.

Nice try, except Joe is a journalist who adheres to a strict ethical code. It’s been eye-opening to Joe to learn how many readers don’t seem to get that opinion writing is “journalism.” Joe didn’t invent this. Newspapers 100 years ago were driven by columns and editorials. Leading questions are not somehow outside the bounds of journalism. That’s ludicrous. There’s not a journalism school in the world that would tell you that. There’s really nothing more Joe can say on that subject.

Additionally, there’s no Glennon hate here. It hasn’t been expressed ever on these pages. Joe’s archives are here for all to view. Joe doesn’t have to support Glennon as the 2014 starter, just like Joe doesn’t have to want Leonard Johnson to return as the 2014 nickel cornerback. Glennon is a good football player who played to his draft level. He’s a valuable Bucs asset as a backup quarterback. Joe hopes Glennon is here in 2014. Lastly, Joe has no interest in inciting readers. You think Joe likes babysitting comments (like this one)? Comments that misrepresent Joe and, effectively, maliciously attack Joe’s reputation and business? No. Joe has no interest. It’s annoying. Joe runs this website with a very simple formula: Joe writes about what Joe finds interesting as it relates to the Bucs. That won’t change, no matter the outcry. –Joe

  15. Vern4499 Says:

When did Joe ever say you have to have the best quarterback to win the division. He’s just has stated you can’t have the fourth worst quarterback and win.

  16. Barry Says:

    CN,MR? I’ll take MG8

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I didn’t find anything particularly wrong with Joe’s line of questioning. He restrained himself by not asking about his beloved Johnny Football….or, he feared what the answer would be.
After Kirwan stated he didn’t think the Bucs would pick a QB in the first round….that pretty much spelled doom for the John-Boy!!!

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

A healthy Aaron Murray is better than Garropollo. Not by much, but he is IMO.

  19. BFFL Says:

The only QBs worthy of replacing Glennon will be gone by pick #2. I thought Murray looked below average at best. Stop with this Garoppolo nonsense. Rebuild the OL, bring in some targets, and above all make the defense dominant.

  20. bwf921 Says:

Garrapolo is better than Glennon and he isn’t even drafted yet. That’s how awful I think Glennon is. Please please bucs replace this guy. I can’t bare the thought of starting the season with this guy as our QB.

  21. WalkdaPlank Says:

    “Looked below average at best”

Might wanna check those numbers again BFFL.

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I tend to agree with BFFL. Let;s see what we have in Glennon when he has time to throw, and receivers to throw to.
That said, I think Joe is doing a great job from the Combine.

  23. rdbucfan Says:

Even harder to make the playoffs with the 4th best coach and 32nd best GM. Thankfully the Glazers realized this last season.

  24. joseph mamma Says:

We’ve had the fourth best QB now for what six, seven years now? Freeman/Glennon what the hell’s the difference, both were about the fourth place, what’s the difference? The only time Freeman wasn’t the fourth best was when Jimmy Clausen was playing.

  25. PRBucFan Says:

Except Johnny Manchild has no relation to the Bucs whatsoever.

    Only in your fantasies haha

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Joe…that’s the longest response I’ve seen you type since I’ve been here.

    Cool down, have a drink.

There are 100’s, probably 1000’s of fans that appreciate what you do for us every day. Whether we like how you do it or not, it’s appreciated.

Yes you do piss me off at times too, but hey, your the best on the net.

  27. SAMCRO Says:

Same here Joe. I like coming here even if I don’t always agree with you. But you’ve got to do me a favor, quit baby-sitting my comments. You haven’t rejected a single one since I apologized. lol

  28. b.Bruce Says:

Joe is the man for having this site.glennon is the next Brady.tampaaaaaaa

  29. blackmagic00 Says:

As a Joe reader since 2008 I have seen everyone here daily. I can assure you Joe loves what’s best for the bucs. Joe has been wrong in some areas as the rest of us have, but no Matter what he’s had the best bucs site ever. And it’s better than anything you’ll find for any other team. Joe does what he does and i love it. So Joe your moto should be. …(doin what I do).

  30. blackmagic00 Says:

Oh and one more thing. No one and I mean no one wants some of that Thomas 2.2 status. So be kind. And Gooo Bucs!!!

  31. Sammy Watkins Mob Says:

    I love this website.

    SAMMY WATKINS FOR #7

  32. Tgregs Says:

Joe Do you actually ask that stupid question each time or just replay your tape? How long did it take you to memorize it?

A “journalist” might actually have more than one “how do you win with the ….blah, blah, blah” question. Maybe try “how do you win with an O Line that sucked ass”

  33. Andrew 1 Says:

Calm down everybody. People think Joe is bashing Glennon, but I just dont see it. He is giving his honest opinion about Glennon in that he thinks he should only be a backup. There is NOTHING wrong with that. some people think he should be a backup, and some people think he should be a starter. We will see what the bucs think over the next few months. And if Joe is wrong, then have some fun with it.

  34. Mr. Patrick Says:

One of our local boys, Matt Patchan, OT from Boston College, had a very good day today at the Combine

  35. Sammy Watkins Mob Says:

Yeah let’s not take this too far, remember what we should be concentrating on right now..

Making sure the Bucs draft SAMMY WATKINS

  36. PRBucFan Says:

Best since bbs.buccaneers.com closed down, been waiting for those boards to return for years now lol.

  37. jr Says:

Kirwan is onto something. Aaron Murray will be a starter in this league. Wouldn’t mind getting him. On the other hand glennon earned his spot. Now he has to lose it.

  38. lurker Says:

    lol…glennon didn’t earn squat.

  39. PRBucFan Says:

    Under the previous regime maybe

  40. BFFL Says:

Glennon played against 7 of the top 10 defenses in his 13 games. He also played behind one of the worst OLs in the league, and was surrounded by a lack of talent at skill positions. He also played for a coaching staff that did not believe in half time adjustments or teaching mechanics. In spite of all this, He was able to put up respectable rookie numbers. In fact, he played as good as or better against the 49ers and Seahawks than any QB in our Division.

  41. Architek Says:

This is all stupid to me – Tedford knows what he wants and i am sure he has his head on straight when thinking about this.

His livelihood depends on it and not some sports announcer, named pat Kirwan.

I for the record disagree that Murray is the answer because he has some of the same issues as Glennon with deep accuracy. He’s smallish as well and coming off injury – yeah I’m glad Kirwan isn’t our GM.

  42. buchead407 Says:

You tell them Joe!!! For everyone trying to bash Joe-
1- Joe is a real journalist ( dumb comment above)
2-joe writes the most interesting articles, without being tryin to be politically correct
    3- Joe writes his opinion…..OPINION..OPINION!!!
4-Joe is also around everything Bucs everyday, coaches, players, combine, practices, radio,…ext…. Joe is way more qualified to make statments and predictions than anyone one this site
5- last but not least, GLENNON is the worst in the division by far not even close…..we need more qbs on the roster. Period

  43. buchead407 Says:

I believe GLENNON is the 14th best qb in the nfc out of 16

  44. buchead407 Says:

Iv said this before, I don’t want himback at all, but I’d take freeman back over glennon 9 out of 10 times

  45. louden Says:

    1) I don´t like Manziel as our 1st pick 2) Glennon has good traits, but yeah i would want a upgrade (although i think its sure to say he could be good enough with right supporting cast.. almost all starting QB´s are, because with the right playcalling/system everyone could has a chance at greatness. people tend to forget that although their are some rules to winning, there will allways be that “gamble factor” in Football; its the nature of the sport; just like Poker 3) take the best talent at 7th or trade down if you like to gamble(and if the trading spots would make sense of course) 4) maybe it would be better to upgrade offense first because: as soon as one side is dominant, the bucs would have a chance to win each and every game.. but it results in worse drafting spots and the bucs have no chance (in my mind) to make up for all the past mistakes in just this very offseason (draft picks especially), plus remember we want to build a lasting contender, don´t we? And lots of our current top talent won´t be able to play at the highest of their levels for a too long time.. which also means lots of cap space would free up (FA signing hurray!! Locking up our drafted top talent, again, hurray!!)
In short: Bucs are in good position to build sth. special, but shouldn´t try to want too much by just one or two years!! Think about sth. that will last!! Maybe try to trade V-jacks (as much as i love to have him here..) to cleaveland? Get extra picks for draft and get Sammy Watkins (for entertainment factor plus the depth lost by V-Jacks) plus a GregRobinson, or get the QB to build around in TeddyB. or get that pass rusher plus a o-liner.. but please don´t waste a great oppertunity to get a great player with the 7th!!

  46. louden Says:

not saying Manziel wouldn´t be worth our first rounder.. but he simply is not a sure pick and we simply have to get a great one at the 7th (because there will be at least one player worth that spot and that´s FOR DAMN SURE)

  47. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    “opinion writing is “journalism.” ”

    So, Rick Reilly……

  48. Left_Coast_Bucs_Fan Says:

As they’ve said over and over on the NFL Channel’s coverage of the combine, “if you see him as a franchise player at any position, especially QB, you take him, regardless of whether the pick is at 1, 7 or 15.”

There’s only one question that we all want answered and will only know with hindsight 20/20 vision is: who does Tedford see as the franchise QB?
